Hollywood Puzzled Why Mike Huckabee Doesn’t Praise Out-of-Wedlock Pregnancies (Like Natalie Portman’s!)

In saying it’s unfortunate that American society seems to “glorify and glamorize” having children out-of-wedlock, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee unknowingly caused a stir in Tinseltown after “slamming” pregnant Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman.
“One of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine,’” Huckabee said earlier this week in an interview with conservative radio host Michael Medved. “But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that‘s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock [sic].”
E! News was just shocked:
Contrary to what E! suggests, I‘m pretty sure Huckabee’s point was not that the couple should rush down the aisle before the baby arrives. Instead, the potential 2012 contender points out that Portman is a role model and not exactly sending the most responsible message to young girls who look up to her. It‘s not an attack on Portman and it’s not a diss on single mothers to point that out.
“Since Huckabee believes women shouldn’t even have a choice about abortion, what exactly did he want Portman to do? She‘s never declared in an interview that it’s better to get pregnant before you’re married, but apparently she’s “glamorizing” the practice simply by continuing to live her movie star life,” writes Gawker girl site Jezebel. “Rather than dressing up and attending the Academy Awards, Portman should have sat home on Oscars night crying her eyes out over the horrible shame she’s inflicted on her family. Or perhaps she should’ve taken a cue from “old Hollywood” and gone “on vacation” for a few months, then passed her lovechild off to a family member.”
After widespread ridicule for his relatively benign comments, Huckabee issued a clarifying statement Friday:
In a recent media interview about my new book, A Simple Government, I discussed the first chapter, “The Most Important Form of Government Is a Father, Mother, and Children.” I was asked about Oscar-winner Natalie Portman’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy.” Natalie is an extraordinary actor, very deserving of her recent Oscar and I am glad she will marry her baby’s father. However, contrary to what the Hollywood media reported, I did not “slam” or “attack” Natalie Portman, nor did I criticize the hardworking single mothers in our country. My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death. That‘s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock.”
Shucks. This probably means Huckabee won’t get the Hollywood feminist vote if he decides to run in 2012. I’m sure he was counting on it…

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 7:14pmI agree with Mike Huckabee but at the same time why does he have to stick his nose in somebody else’s business? So what, Natalie Portman got pregnant out of wedlock now she deserves to be criticized by folks in the media (yes, Mike Huckabee is part of the media). She‘s a pregnant woman and having all this nonsense media drama surrounding her isn’t good for her pregnancy. Sure Mike Huckabee has a point but he could have made the same point without dragging somebody into it who wasn’t even asking for it. I’m sorry but the whole conservative social crusader thing wears me out sometimes.

Posted on March 5, 2011 at 1:21amThat’s because you must not have conservative values. Huckabee was asked a question and I applaud that he doesn’t cave-in and “say” what he thinks people want to hear (like Obama does). Huckabee was RIGHT. Responsible people get married before getting pregnant. This is what’s wrong with our country…..no morals or values any more. Breakdown of the family. If anything, it makes me respect Huckabee MORE!
But whatever—he did NOT “slam” her. NOT at all. The liberal media is obviously worried he might run for President, so if they can demonize him–they will. They’re trying to make it sound like it was something worse than it is. My gosh, no group of people are going to agree on everything 100%. Reread (or listen again) to what Huckabee said. So, he thinks babies out of wedlock isn’t something to be glamorized because of what USUALLY happens to single mothers – living in poverty & not able to support themself & the baby. (THAT is what Huckabee was getting at. Young girls see rich-star Portman & thinks it looks glamorous.) There’s nothing wrong with what Huckabee said – it’s true. Even if you didn‘t care about the ’moral’ side of it, the common-sense, fiscally responsible side of it makes sense (which is much of what Huckabee was referring to.)
You say ‘ole fuddy’ GOP– no, it’s conservative values.

Posted on March 6, 2011 at 4:44amAnd was anyone really “glorifying” her?: I didn’t even know she was pregnant until I saw her on the Oscars. All she did was express her love for her boyfriend and her happiness that they were having a child. I don’t have any problem with that.

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 7:01pmI am not a Huckabee fan; however, I am an avid fan of people like him who have the courage to tell the truth. Our society is set up so as to make people dependent on the government. Everyone makes a mistake and we should assist the mother of a child born out of wedlock. However, when the same person produces “mistake #2, #3, etc.” we should then penalize them Vs rewarding them with increased welfare benefits.

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 7:59pmYou have it all wrong, Bristol was a seventeen year old naive girl with a jerk. She learned a valuable lesson hopefully. But Hollywood sets the most awful morals for people. Very few of them have any morals, they are like dogs breeding and do not care. They thumb their noses at God’s commandments and could care less what poor examples they give. Good for Huckaby pointing out the truth. Hollywood has always been an immoral, godless place, but women used to quietly have their babies and adopt them out, now they proudly show their big bellies like nothing is wrong with their immorality. It’s time Hollywood was called to task for the immorality and what they do to impressionable young people. Mostly we would not need pregnancy clinics if people lived by God‘s rules and He didn’t give them to punish us but to make life better for us.

Posted on March 5, 2011 at 9:46amYes … there’s a difference between Bristol Palin, who said, “What I did was wrong and I’m going to go out and tell other young women not to make the same mistake,” and Natalie Portman, who celebrated herself and said, “This is the greatest role of my life!”

Posted on March 4, 2011 at 6:45pmWhat I find astonishing is how many alleged conservatives have bent over backwards to condemn Mike Huckabee and Michael Medved just so they can show those coastal liberals they’re with it too and those old hoary values like getting married before having children are for fuddy duddies. You’d think they were the ones who knocked up Miss Portman, or at least wished they did. (And to be fair, she’s not the only one. Kate Hudson is also pregnant-and-engaged-for-whenever.)
Maybe the Huck is finding out the hard way that being a social critic and a possible presidential candidate at the same time is a tough act to pull off. After all a leftist feminist actually did bash Portman in a Slate article a few days ago for saying motherhood was going to be the role of her life, but it attracted little controversy since said leftist isn’t going to run against Obama.
But I don’t disagree with the Huck. It’s about time that someone called Hollywood and its sycophantic press out for celebrating babies without marriage and that weddings are simply PR events saved for whenever the stars have time in between photo shoots, workouts, and exotic vacations. In real life, children of unmarried/co-habitating couples are more likely to be poor and more likely to be abused. Just because you say you are engaged doesn‘t mean you’re necessarily picking out china patters and arranging for the Knights Of Columbus Hall; I can‘t believe how many of Huckabee’s critics have lowered their own standards to praise someone for merely being engaged. It doesn’t count until the guy with the little hat says, “Mazel tov.” These girls get credit for choosing life but they also have a responsibility to ensure they have a committed team that will be there for life to raise their children. After all, Portman herself benefitted from a stable, two-parent home and her parents are still married.

Though I think it has to be acknowledged that Palin‘s life is currently as privileged as Portman’s. Few teen moms have super supportive families like the Palin clan and even fewer have Bristol’s opportunities.

Posted on March 5, 2011 at 1:04amWhat’s to call out about Bristol NOW?? It’s done. She‘s come forward to tell others that it’s best to practice abstinence and that it’s NOT glamorous. She never tried to glamorize her situation. The question to Huckabee was about the the Acadamy Awards the NIGHT BEFORE. Besides, even during the time when Bristol was pregnant & Sarah was campaigning – no one tried to act like it was “glamorous”. If anything, the Palins handled it very true to what they stand for, however they’re not unrealistic. People make mistakes, and when they do, they are accountable. The Palin‘s never glamorized Bristol’s pregnancy, but they also exhibited unconditional love AND accountability and NOT taking the selfish way out (abortion). In other words, they walk their talk.
You‘re just looking for something and you’re not finding it.

Anyone who ever watched an episode of Murphy Brown understood that she was no more intended as a role model than Homer Simpson is. Either Mr. Quayle was criticizing something he had never seen, or he was so dense he couldn’t understand that in comedy we’re sometimes asked to like characters who we would not admire at all if they were real people – a sophisticated dramatic concept that has been part of tv comedy since the days of Amos and Andy and Sgt. Today’s Hollywood makes Curly Howard look like Albert Einstein.

Im puzzled as to why Mike Huckabee’s son likes to torture dogs?!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is that what’s wrong with you? You’ve been tortured! Hmmmm. You must have spent the last two weeks in Wisconsin. That’s nothing short of torture, with all the UNIONS’ NOISE, verbal abuse, obscene language, and in-your-face attitude. You’ll be okay. Just watch Glenn Beck.
Posted on March 4, 2011 at 11:24pmThe more Hollywood breeds, the faster we go down the tubes.
Please people………..
Stop watching
Stop going
Stop buying
Stop listening
Every moment spent paying attention to these fools makes us that much stupider.
If we starve the beast, it will die.
Posted on March 5, 2011 at 12:04amoh bubbacoop, stop being such a bubba….
THE REAL QUESTION HERE ……IS WHAT IS REALLY, REALLY PUZZLING, IS WHY THE MEDIA AND ESPECIALLY THE CONSERVATIVE MEDIA-“The Blaze” included are making a ‘story’ by taking Mike Huckabee’s comments COMPLETELY out of context…………
He was NOT critisizing Portman for having a baby, he was speaking, as to why our society glamorizes something, that is actually, for the non-hollywood, individual is far from glamorous.
This is NOTHING more than the media, trying to make this man look bad in the light of the 2012 bid…hoping they can scare him, and his numbers away……..
My gosh, maybe your guys will wake up and realize the only people that the left are truly afraid of runnin in 2012, are the very, very few candidates, who truly have courage, and do have a fear of God.
Palin and Huckabee are continually hounded by a media, who could care less in reporting the facts as long as they can undermine their potential for POTUS.
“Holy underwear! Sheriff murdered! Innocent women and children blown to bits! We have to protect our phony baloney jobs here, gentlemen! We must do something about this immediately! Immediately! Immediately! Harrumph! Harrumph! Harrumph!” -Gov. Le Petomane, Blazing Saddles
Posted on March 5, 2011 at 1:38amHey I have an idea. As American’s, let’s pretend there are no single mothers or fathers. If there are let’s shun them. And let’s boycott any movie that represents single parents as survivors and people capable of overcoming adversity and raising good kids.
Instead, let’s follow the example of dictatorial countries like China. Let’s only allow movies that show single women as slu*s with doomed children. Let’s never protray the struggle of asingle parent in a good light and maybe single parenthood will go away.
Report Post »You’re giving Mike Huckabee WAY too much credit. I don’t think anyone in Hollywood is aware of his existence, much less concerned about him “snubbing” them.
Posted on March 5, 2011 at 9:19amWhat I really don’t get is why the Hollywood elite still support the current US administratios attack on the wealthy Americans. Last time I looked, most of them would qualify for the big tax. Are the just setting back and taking it? Also, under the other regime that wishes to take us out, they and all their friends might find them selves being stoned to death in a burka for getting pregnant out of wedlock.
And he did a pretty damn good job. And that he converted from Liberal to Conservative. While being Governor of Caleefornia.
Posted on March 5, 2011 at 12:37pmThe main objective of the comment was likely to call attention to the book. A few controversial remarks can “create” news. Now a couple million more Americans know about the book that likely would not have even looked at it otherwise. Most of the right or left are not malleable when it comes to their core issues. Doesn’t mean you want your views “forced” on the opposition, but today if you point out “statistics” in regards to welfare recipients or facts when it comes to the ACTUAL unemployment rates, etc. you are automatically painted into a racist or Ogre in the main stream media’s eyes. Leaving Huckabee out of it, the propagandists continue to twist sometimes innocent comments or a misspoken sentence out of context to vilify someone who they do not want to see gain roots in politics. Yet ‘their’ candidates can say some incredibly stupid remarks with a pass.
