The infamous Athens, Texas, nativity scene (Image Source: The Malakoff News)
The battle over a nativity scene in Athens, Texas, reached new heights this weekend when up to 5,000 supporters flooded the town square. Their purpose? To stand firmly opposed to the attacks a prominent atheist group has waged on the religious display.
As the Blaze reported earlier this month, the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation, a group that frequently targets the presence of faith and religion in the public square, is demanding that a nativity scene be removed from public property.
On Saturday, thousands of supporters assembled in Athens Town Square to rally around and support the religious display. According to WTKR, some likened the ever-intensifying scenario a “holy war.”
Supporters of the nativity scene claim that there’s an attack on Christianity in America. ”It’s time for us to stand together and protect the very principles that made this nation great from its birth,” said Pastor Nathan Lorick, a nativity scene supporter. ”We‘ve become so busy with our lives that we’ve forgotten our first love.”
Watch Lorick speak, below:
Rather than a protest, WTKR reports that the event resembled more of a church service, as thousands said prayers and sang hymns. ”What we need Christians is to stand and say Jesus Christ is the only way,” Pastor Derek Rogers proclaimed.
See protesters, below, singing a Christian praise and worship song:
Critics though — mostly atheists — believe that the scene is offensive and that it should not be present on government property (the nativity is currently positioned in front of the Henderson County Courthouse). The Daily Mail has more:
Saturday’s rally passed without incident and included speeches, patriotic music, Christmas carols and prayers.
The FFRF sent a banner to the court house that it wanted displayed, with a very different message than the birth of Christ.
The group‘s banner read ’At this season of the Winter Solstice, let reason prevail.’
‘There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but a myth & superstition that hardens hearts & enslaves minds,’ it finished.
The sign was initially put up by a mystery man, but was later removed because the proper compliance forms hadn’t been filed. While the FFRF is known to sue if it doesn’t win in these sorts of situations, the town, so far, shows no signs of backing down.

“Today we erected a life-size nativity scene in Central Park, on the corner of 59th and 5th; it will be up until January 3. Moreover, we did not surround it with secular symbols.

You lied…….AGAIN!
Separation of Church and State – The Metaphor and the Constitution
“Separation of church and state” is a common metaphor that is well recognized. Equally well recognized is the metaphorical meaning of the church staying out of the state‘s business and the state staying out of the church’s business. Because of the very common usage of the “separation of church and state phrase,” most people incorrectly think the phrase is in the constitution. The phrase “wall of separation between the church and the state” was originally coined by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptists on January 1, 1802. His purpose in this letter was to assuage the fears of the Danbury, Connecticut Baptists, and so he told them that this wall had been erected to protect them. The metaphor was used exclusively to keep the state out of the church’s business, not to keep the church out of the state’s business.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 2:23pmcontinued………….
The constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Both the free exercise clause and the establishment clause place restrictions on the government concerning laws they pass or interfering with religion. No restrictions are placed on religions except perhaps that a religious denomination cannot become the state religion.
However, currently the implied common meaning and the use of the metaphor is strictly for the church staying out of the state’s business. The opposite meaning essentially cannot be found in the media, the judiciary, or in public debate and is not any part of the agenda of the ACLU or the judiciary.
This, in conjunction with several other factors, makes the “separation of church and state” metaphor an icon for eliminating anything having to do with Christian theism, the religion of our heritage, in the public arena. One of these factors is the use of the metaphor in place of the actual words of the constitution in discourse and debate. This allows the true meaning of the words in the constitution to be effectively changed to the implied meaning of the metaphor and the effect of the “free exercise” clause to be obviated. Another factor facilitating the icon to censor all forms of Christian theism in the public arena is a complete misunderstanding of the “establishment” clause.
Report Post »Rational Man
Posted on December 19, 2011 at 2:25pmcontinued………
Separation of Church and State – The Establishment Clause in Context
In addition to the “Separation of Church and State” metaphor misrepresenting the words of the establishment clause, the true meaning of the establishment clause is also misrepresented. The “establishment” clause states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. . .” Before these words can be put in context and the true meaning of the clause can be correctly identified, we need to examine the word “religion” and put it in America’s historical context at the time the constitution was framed. In addition, we need to examine the previous European historical background of the founders of our country to identify what specifically motivated them to place the “establishment” clause in the constitution.
To accomplish this, we need to add more specificity to the word “religion” to clarify both the American and European historical backgrounds and put the word “religion” in proper context. We need to delineate between doctrinal and denominational religion. We also need to understand that the doctrinal religion being discussed is Christian Theism, which is defined by a belief in the Bible. We know what specific Christian denominational religions are.

It was understood that Christian Theism was the default state doctrinal religion. As opposed to being something to fear, it was something believed to be vital to the success of our government. Consequently, the framers feared a state denominational religion not a state doctrinal religion! Some additional evidences that indicate Christian Theism was the national doctrinal religion are listed below:

Prayer in schools had already been ended in 1962 by the Court’s ruling in Engel v. Vitale. Murray’s 1963 court case banned coercive Bible verse recitation at public schools in the United States. Abington School District v. Schempp, Schempp introduced the freedom to choose no religion.
She never appeared before the courts during that case so there can be no film of her dropping the F-bomb. FACT: The SCOTUS does not and has never allowed filming or even cameras in the courtroom. The film you claim to have seen can not exist, you are lying.

Good post. “Some” people who claim to be Christian use the faith to hide FROM taking a stand in the name of Jesus Christ. They cower in abject fear because they themselves lack the resolve to stand and be counted. They always want someone else to fight their battles for them. If Jesus wanted a Church of sniveling cowards he‘d have recruited the Pharisee’s, and Sadducee. When it comes to the Temple of God (which we are) we are to drive the enemy out and not even allow them to be mentioned among us. I will prefer others over me, but I will not let others think that just because I’m a Christian that makes me weak. There are times when being passive is a greater sin than striking out.

You have the right to be offended only. The Establishment Clause was intended to prohibit the federal government from declaring and financially supporting a national religion. Some governmental activity related to religion has been declared constitutional by the Supreme Court.
If faith and hope and the values of the Ten Commandments offends you. The people here and in that community of Texas have spoken. People who lack faith offend those who have faith all the time, you don’t see them asking for you to be removed from public property.

I learned to hunt, fish and catch crawdads for bait, listen to the dogs at night on the tract of a deer or fox. Those visits have stayed with me all my life and all I’ve ever wanted, was to live in Texas.
I moved there for 3 years in the late 90′s and hated to leave, but had to take care of mom who is in her 90′s now. Some day I’ll move back and look for my prince charming to complete my life, who also loves Texas. If that doesn’t work, I drink coffee from a cup that says:

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 8:02pmAtheists are such hilarious little toads. A little look back to the birth of this Nation.
That inauguration occurred in New York City, which served as the nation’s capital during the first year of the new federal government. The preparations had been extensive; everything had been well planned.
The papers reported on the first inaugural activity:
[O]n the morning of the day on which our illustrious President will be invested with his office, the bells will ring at nine o’clock, when the people may go up to the house of God and in a solemn manner commit the new government, with its important train of consequences, to the holy protection and blessing of the Most High. An early hour is prudently fixed for this peculiar act of devotion and . . . is designed wholly for prayer.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 8:04pmStanding beside Livingston and Washington were many distinguished officials, including Vice President John Adams, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Jay, Generals Henry Knox and Philip Schuyler, and several others. The Bible was opened (at random) to Genesis 49; Washington placed his left hand upon the open Bible, raised his right, took the oath of office, then bent over and reverently kissed the Bible. Chancellor Livingston proclaimed, “It is done!” Turning to the crowd assembled below, he shouted, “Long live George Washington – the first President of the United States!” That shout was echoed and re-echoed by the crowd. Washington and the other officials then departed the balcony and went inside Federal Hall to the Senate Chamber where Washington delivered his Inaugural Address.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 8:06pmHaving finished his address, Washington offered its closing prayer:
Having thus imparted to you my sentiments as they have been awakened by the occasion which brings us together, I shall take my present leave – but not without resorting once more to the benign Parent of the Human Race in humble supplication [prayer] that . . . His Divine blessing may be equally conspicuous in the enlarged views, the temperate consultations, and the wise measures on which the success of this government must depend.
The next inaugural activities then began – activities arranged by Congress itself when the Senate directed:
That after the oath shall have been administered to the President, he – attended by the Vice-President and members of the Senate and House of Representatives – proceed to St. Paul’s Chapel to hear Divine service.
The House had approved the same resolution, so the president and Congress thus went en masse to church as an official body. As affirmed by congressional records:
The President, the Vice-President, the Senate, and House of Representatives, &c., then proceeded to St. Paul’s Chapel, where Divine Service was performed by the chaplain of Congress.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 8:24pmLets turn to the SCOTUS opinion in the case of Holy Trinity
Even the constitution of the United States, which is supposed to have little touch upon the private life of the individual, contains in the first amendment a declaration common to the constitutions of all the states, as follows: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” etc., – and also provides in article 1, § 7, (a provision common to many constitutions,) that the executive shall have 10 days (Sundays excepted) within which to determine whether he will approve or veto a bill.
Report Post »The10thAmendment
Posted on December 19, 2011 at 8:26pmThere is no dissonance in these declarations. There is a universal language pervading them all, having one meaning. They affirm and reaffirm that this is a religious nation. These are not individual sayings, declarations of private persons. They are organic utterances. They speak the voice of the entire people. While because of a general recognition of this truth the question has seldom been presented to the courts, yet we find that in Updegraph v. Comm., 11 Serg. & R. 394, 400, it was decided that, “Christianity, general Christianity, is, and always has been, a part of the common law of Pennsylvania; * * * not Christianity with an established church and tithes and spiritual courts, but Christianity with liberty of conscience to all men.” And in People v. Ruggles, 8 Johns. 290, 294, 295, Chancellor KENT, the great commentator on American law, speaking as chief justice of the supreme court of New York, said: “The people of this state, in common with the people of this country, profess the general doctrines of Christianity as the rule of their faith and practice; and to scandalize the author of those doctrines in not only, in a religious point of view, extremely impious, but, even in respect to the obligations due to society, is a gross violation of decency and good order.

Nor are we bound by any expressions in the constitution, as some have strangely supposed, either not to punish at all, or to punish indiscriminately the like attacks upon the religion of Mahomet or of the Grand Lama; and for this plain reason that the case assumes that we are a Christian people, and the morality of the country is deeply ingrafted upon Christianity, and not upon the doctrines or worship of those impostors.” And in the famous case of Vidal v. Girard‘s Ex’rs, 2 How. 127, 198, this court, while sustaining the will of Mr. Girard, with its provisions for the creation of a college into which no minister should be permitted to enter, observed: “it is also said, and truly, that the Christian religion is a part of the common law of Pennsylvania.”

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 8:28pmIf we pass beyond these matters to a view of American life, as expressed by its laws, its business, its customs, and its society, we find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth. Among other matters note the following: The form of oath universally prevailing, concluding with an appeal to the Almighty; the custom of opening sessions of all deliberative bodies and most conventions with prayer; the prefatory words of all wills, “In the name of God, amen;” the laws respecting the observance of the Sabbath, with the general cessation of all secular business, and the closing of courts, legislatures, and other similar public assemblies on that day; the churches and church organizations which abound in every city, town, and hamlet; the multitude of charitable organizations existing everywhere under Christian auspices; the gigantic missionary associations, with general support, and aiming to establish Christian missions in every quarter of the globe. These and many other matters which might be noticed, add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation. In the face of all these, shall it be believed that a congress of the United States intended to make it a misdemeanor for a church of this country to contract for the services of a Christian minister residing in another nation?

I don’t much care for the “decorations” for the “holiday,” but hey–ya know–some people actually enjoy both the holiday and the decorations.
So for one time out of the year, I “put up” with them everywhere–on courtyard lawns, in stores, in my neighborhood, restaurants–wherever.
I may not personally like them, but I don’t begrudge others who do.
So. . . if Jews or Muslims wish to display items of their faith too – - SO WHAT?!? LOL To ME, anyway, it would be no worse than what I see around Halloween! LOL

We can go all the way back to the original Colony declarations and intents, the establishments of the various State Constitutions AFTER the the ratification of the US Constitution that makes religion (in their words CHRISTIAN denominations) protected against infringement, and in fact blasphemy against Christianity a crime. There has NEVER been such protection offered to what the Founders declared to be IMPOSTER religions, such as Judaism, Hinduism, and the Mohammedans.

On Dec 19th at 10AM you posted the following:, I have seen the clip of her at the Supreme Court when she petitioned them to take prayer out of schools.
LIE 1. clip of her at the Supreme Court. That is impossible. Show me ANY clip of anyone presenting before SCOTUS, any clip, find one. The SCOTUS has never allowed cameras, so you have never seen film or video of anyone presenting a case. Second, lawyers only appear in SCOTUS Hearing, not witnesses. I have been to the SCOTUS, I used to be a ACLU investigator.
LIE 2: she petitioned them to take prayer out of schools. Her case was about compulsory bible reading and it reenforced the previous decision on prayer. Her case was absorbed into a similar case so the judgement was in a broader issue. It created the concept of Freedom to chose NO RELIGION as a protected class.
For camera in court see this news story:http://thehill.com/blogs/twitter-room/other-news/200311-democrat-pushes-for-cameras-in-supreme-court
She never appeared before the courts during that case so there can be no film of her dropping the F-bomb in front of judges . FACT: The SCOTUS does not and has never allowed filming or even cameras in the courtroom. The film you claim to have seen can not exist, you are lying.

Stand up to these Atheist Idiots nationwide.
They are the MINORITY!!!! MAJORITY rules!!!!!
As for Madalyn Murray O’Hair….,she was an Atheist Monster! She founded “American Atheists”. UGH!
Report Post »O’Hair was responsible for the removal of the Bible reading and the saying of “The Lord’s Prayer” in the Public Schools. Nothing has bee right since.
It was the worst decision the Supreme Court ever made.
She,along with her son Jon, and grandaughter Robin disappeared in 1995.
It was later discovered that all three had been gruesomely murdered by a fellow member of “American Atheists” named David Roland Waters.
Google the BI*#CH. It’s very interesting.
Ironically one of her sons …,William Murray, denounced his Mother and became a Baptist Minister.

Amen to that! I have family in the Great State of Texas and their attitude is “if you don’t like… then move!” My sister kid graduated two years ago from a public high and at her commencement a student started with payer and ended with a teacher’s payer, “…..thank our Lord Jesus Christ” and the place erupted applause!
I’m thing of moving our family to Texas maybe in the next year. Some time I can’t wait to get out of this wishy washy State of Ohio. The D’s, unions, and the RINOS are just killing once a great State of Ohio. :-(
To all atheists: if you don’t like our Faith then you can move. We are not keeping you here…Europe would be a great place for you. They are in a post Christian era so you would feel righjt at home there. Just remember one thing, a true Christian will not harm just because you is you don’t believe in Christ. Yes, they my bug and/or annoy you a bit about not believing but the extreme Muslims on the other hand… they teach and preach if an infidel doesn’t not convert it Islam they should be killed by a sword. I don’t know about you but I would rather be around a bunch of nutty sold out Christians then a bunch of nutty Muslims! One group may be annoying to you but yet they will still try do kind things to you while the other group might make you lose something from the neck up. I know they are not that way yet but they soon will be. Just give it some more time…. you’ll see.

Do you shake in fear when you look in a mirror with two eyes but see one person? Gosh gee willikers do you disgust yourself when you have to breathe air or drink water or eat food from a perfect earth that the unreasonable God (oh no I said it) made especially for us? Oh what would Washington and Lincoln think of you? Wear sunglasses Encinom hide. Posted on December 19, 2011 at 9:49amThere is no right not to be offended. Even God suffers and permits offensive speech, behavior and displays. Well, except that one day that three thousand died. Technically, the House could not pass a bill that was not paid for, except Obamacare, so it is not likely that any new law will be passed to protect atheist from being offended. It is just too hard for the CBO to score it. I am offended that Obama needs a vacation. A vacation from what? Working? Working to do what? I am sympathetic to the idea that in an ideal world no one should be forced to pay for or support something that violates their conscience, but I don’t see how an atheist would call this a violation of their conscience. I realize that many blame religion for the ills of the world but some credit religion for not making things worse. A world where we live by reason alone is not attainable because we don’t have enough knowledge to avoid disasters, some truth is counter intuitive. We will always live by faith.
