Home Sweet…Airplane? Oregon Man Transforms Boeing 727 Into Homestead

Most people can’t stand the thought of spending even two hours on a cramped and uncomfortable airplane, but Bruce Campbell hopes to spend his life in one.
Campbell, of Hillsboro, Ore., is making a retired Boeing 727 his home away from home. The 1969 aircraft was purchased and modified — a continuing process — for $100,000.
“It is comfortable,” Campbell said in tour he gave of the plane to CNN affiliate KOIN-TV. “Aircraft, when converted into a home, provides a whole different experience.”
He has a working bathroom — yes, it looks like an airplane restroom — a rudimentary shower and even uses the wings of the plane as decks.

“There’s not much privacy, but I live in the woods. There are lots of trees around,” Campbell said when describing the shower.
While Campbell has ripped out many of the chairs in the cabin to make room for living space, the cockpit remains relatively in tact as a “play room.”
“I think the cockpit has a certain magic,” he said.

Watch this footage of Campbell’s aircraft homestead:
When it comes to closing up and locking the door, Campbell simply has to crank up the stairs and flip the latch.

Like the tiny house people we know and love, Campbell is hoping to spur others into considering a different lifestyle.
“It’s not for everybody,” he concedes. “But I think it‘s for a lot of people and it’s definitely for me. I love it. I absolutely love it.”
As for airplane homes, Gizmodo points out this is not the first time such a repurposing endeavor has been undertaken. In 2010, the gadget and tech blog profiled a Malibu home created from a Boeing 747.

Posted on June 9, 2012 at 12:56pmit‘s the angle of the picture that’s likely tilted, just because it looks inclined in the pic fails to mean it is such on the ground, a camera can be held at any angle

Posted on June 8, 2012 at 1:11pmMy husband would do this and has even talked about how cool it would be to have an abandoned airplane on some property. So glad we sold our acreage cause he just may have done it were an airplane available.

Posted on June 8, 2012 at 12:52pmI’m glad he is happy with it. I am always happy to see stuff that is headed for the furnace pulled away and reused. Further use of the item gives honor to those who made the item.

I would have gotten a 747. 727 is too much like a trailer for me.

Posted on June 8, 2012 at 10:53amThe 727-200 has more than 3K square feet and the way it is constructed makes it virtually indestructible. Never need to paint, stainless steel and aluminum, never needs a new roof and foget about home invasion…..These babies are stronger than a tank.

This plane now a boat is pretty cool too. Read about this one a few years ago. Being somewhat a Parrot Head myself I can tell that this owner has read Jimmy Buffett’s book, “Where Is Joe Merchant” and probably listened to Desdemonas Building A Rocket Ship way too many times.

Posted on June 8, 2012 at 6:50amI’m house shopping right now, maybe I should be airplane shopping. Wonder how much a used plane costs. Then again, I’m in Texas and the storms might have my house taking off. Which would probably lead to making a bunker out of it. I could make it look like an airplane flew into the ground.
