Homeland Security Given Green Light to Monitor American Journalists

Under the National Operations Center (NOC)’s Media Monitoring Initiative that emerged from the Department of Homeland Security in November, Washington has written permission to collect and retain personal information from journalists, news anchors, reporters or anyone who uses “traditional and/or social media in real time to keep their audience situationally aware and informed.”
According to DHS, the definition of personal identifiable information can consist of any intellect “that permits the identity of an individual to be directly or indirectly inferred, including any information which is linked or linkable to that individual.”
RT adds:
Previously established guidelines within the administration say that data could only be collected under authorization set forth by written code, but the new provisions in the NOC’s write-up means that any reporter, whether someone along the lines of Walter Cronkite or a budding blogger, can be victimized by the agency.
Also included in the roster of those subjected to the spying are government officials, domestic or not, who make public statements, private sector employees that do the same and “persons known to have been involved in major crimes of Homeland Security interest,” which to itself opens up the possibilities even wider.
The department says that they will only scour publically-made info available while retaining data, but it doesn’t help but raise suspicion as to why the government is going out of their way to spend time, money and resources on watching over those that helped bring news to the masses.
According to RT, the website “Fast Company” reports that the NOC Monitoring Initiative has been in play since at least early-2010 and that the data is being shared with both private sector businesses and international third parties.

We may have been asleep too long, and with the elections going the way they are going, they now know that enough are not going to wake up in time. The elections may never get here. They think Americans are weak minded, and I have to tell you, I am beginning to think so myself. I read posts on here all the time that say, get your guns ready, with no real committment. What I do not see on here is real bravery. I have listened to people complain about the government everywhere, and all the time. How corrupt they are, how they do not listen to us, how they allow the rich to get richer and the poor get poorer, but I have never seen any action on those words. Maybe we deserve what we are about to get. You have been proving to the establishment that you will just follow their lead and look to their candidate no matter what. The Constitution is about to be taken down completely, and many on here are still looking for that smooth talking, good looking candidate that tells you what you want to hear, and you follow with open arms. Goodbye freedom, goodbye liberty. It was fun while it lasted. I just wish, we would have woken up sooner and looked at Paul back in 2008.

I’m with you. I have never been interested in politics. I woke up when the health care bill got crammed down our throats. I didn’t listen to talk radio, though my husband did. I sometimes watched fox news, but not very often. I’m a Christian, and a Navy Veteran. I was taught in the Navy to see patterns (tracking subs through their visible patterns on grey paper, not by listening), but I’ve also considered myself to have the gift of discernment. I knew from the campaign that Obama was evil and anti-American. The health care bill just sealed it. I’ve been campaigning and trying to inform everyone I know through my own blog, which I suppose now I should wait for the black helicopters to come for me. It will be a sad day, when they take away in cuffs a woman dying of cancer for trying to save her nation.

The first time I heard Obama speak my family and I were living in Kuwait. I recall his talking point too- changing the United States. My first thought was, “change it to what?” He never would say specifically. Oh, there were plenty of innuendos of socialism, recall the Joe the Plumber debiacle. But I remeber thinking to myself “not all change is good” and because the nature of the change seemed to be a well-guarded secret, I became fearful of what he planned to do. I have never really been a very out-spoken person, particuraly on politics. But I saw many of my friends and family get caught up in the romance of electing this country’s first black president for that sake only: and it troubled me. I have, sense, tried to read-up on history and be very vocal about what this country is facing. I have learned that every president in the past several decades have done much to destroy our founding principles. I do not know yet whether it is the path towards socialism, communisim, or marxism that we appear to be headed on. None of the options are appealing to me. We are getting as prepared as one can be. We have come to the realization that Obama is only a particular gear in this massive machine. Even if he is not reelcted a second term, we are still headed towards something more sinister. We need someone trully bound to the constitution to get back to the republic that we once had. And so far, I have not seen anyone who fits that bill. Get prepared and stay prepared!

You are wrong. That is not circular reasoning at all. When the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution, that is the law. Thus, information you willfully disclose to the public is not protected by the Constitution. This is not new.
Thus, if the government stores information that you publicly disclose, there is no Fourth Amendment violation.
Also, have you actually looked at the source this article cites? It’s a Russian state-run news organization and neither this story nor the RT.com story cite any specific facts about where the story came from. If conservatives automatically disregard the NY Times, I would think you would be even more skeptical of this story. But then again, it reinforces your worldview so it must be true.

The Defense Authorization bill also addressed important issues from troop pay to medical care for veterans to the maintenance of military facilities like Hill Air Force Base. This year I was able to include an amendment that ensures we have an appropriate plan in place to preserve our nation’s ability to build land-based ICBM solid rocket motors, which are built and maintained in Utah.

This article is really meaningless with what has already happened. Doesn’t it concern you that this type of legislation is sailing through congress with barely a peep out of the media? Even if we‘re overracting to the current adminstration’s intentions, what happens if someone with less than honorable intentions stumbles into the power? I argue that one can not be paranoid when the 5th admendment is essentially tossed out with such ease. Something’s not right, period!

You have no Fifth Amendment protection for information you willfully display to the public. That is, when you write on your Facebook page, blog, or comment on the Blaze, you have no Fifth Amendment protection to that information.
For the record, I am not making this up, it is what the Supreme Court has said. Information you willingly display to the public is not provided protection by the Fifth Amendment.

He was no conspiracy theorist but from his observations and his dataset it “appears” to offer more than the planned purpose. Who knows…
