BERLIN (AP) — A live broadcast of a popular German game show was halted after a contestant was severely injured while trying to jump over a moving car driven by his father.
(via The Daily Beast)
The accident occurred Saturday night just before Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber was to appear on the show, prompting him to say on his Twitter account: “Please pray for Samuel Koch & his family as we wait and hope for his health and safety.”
Koch’s stunt may have gone terribly wrong because the special shoes he was wearing for the jump, featuring a suspension system, malfunctioned.
Broadcaster ZDF said the accident by the 23-year-old prompted it to cancel the live broadcast of the “Wetten Dass” (“Bet It”), which had an audience of about 10 million people, according to German media.
Koch suffered multiple back injuries and fractures, underwent surgery Sunday, and his condition initially life threatening, the German news agency DPAD quoted Duesseldorf hospital Dr. Wolfgang Raab as saying.
But it remained unclear if or when Koch would fully recover since “he is in an extremely critical stage,” Raab told journalists.
Bieber, a 16-year-old singer, added on Twitter that he felt sorry for not being able to perform in Germany, but “some things are more important than putting on a show. We will be back I promise.”
The TV show also was to include a gig by singer Robbie Williams, and Phil Collins, Cher or actress Cameron Diaz were among the guests, according to the broadcaster’s website.
“Wetten dass” has been on TV for nearly 30 years and is one of Germany’s most successful shows.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 6:04pmNo one seems to mention here that his father was driving the car. He must feel awful, knowing he was the one that actually caused the injury, faul or no fault. I’ll pray for him and his family, but come on people; this was a crazy stunt!!!!

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 5:56pmI feel worst for the father who drove the car, because he has to feel terrible. But seriously I hate to say it, but it puts the “don’t try this at home kids” saying in a serious light.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 8:50pmDon’t know why the father was USING the son like this. Forget the “it takes two” argument. Would any of you dads out there do what he did? He may have even been preparing his son for this type of junk for years. Son wants to please dad. I have no pity for this poor excuse for a dad because he was willing to put his precious son’s life needlessly on the line. He knew better and did it anyway. Put him and his tears in jail. This man needs to pay for his crime.
Having ranted all that, I hope the son recovers and visits his old man in jail. And forgives him. Heap those burning coals on dad’s stupid head.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 5:52pmPeople play on these “reality” game shows thinking that the producers of these shows would never do anything that could possibly harm or severely injure their contestants. I guess that waver from any liability in case of harm or death doesn’t convey the danger that these shows will inflict on their participants just to get a rating. Now, if this young man dies his father will forever have to know he was the one driving the car who killed his son. As it stands the poor father will now have to live with the fact that he drove the instrument that severely crippled his son. My prayers and my heart go out to this family.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 5:46pmmy prayers go out to him and his family. I’ve got these jump stilts. It takes lots of practice to comfortably run and jump let alone do a flip. Back flips are easier than front flips and if it was his intention to pull a handspring off the car, then it appears his error as he over shot the flips landing. There’s not much that can “malfuntion” on these as the article states to the cause. None the less, I hope he has a full recovery.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 5:37pmAm I the only one old enough to remember ‘That’s Incredible!’? This looked alarmingly familiar. After a few seasons, it became harder to find new and incredible stunts. They brought back a high jumper who had hurdled a speeding car, and had him attempt to jump 2. He missed, and we were treated to 10 slo-mo replays of his lower leg spinning around his knee several times.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 5:30pmThis is the stupidest thing I’ve seen in a while. Do people have no intelligence whatsoever. Jumping over a moving vehicle? Really? No one knew beforehand that this was idiotic?

Look at the stuntmen of the 20s (barnstormers) and 30s; Houdini himself once got out of a straight jacket while hanging upside down on a skyscraper. So, it is not just this generation, it has happened for many generations – difference is, we have more cameras availible this gen to record the dumb actions done.

Let’s not forget someone who had the idea of trying to go across the Grand Canyon. …but couldn’t get permission so Evel Knievel jumps Snake River Canyon instead. Well, tries to jump it. I believe California is the most populous state – so it would make sense that it has a large number of military personnel – Thank you, California. I’ve been there many times, and really envy your weather, wealth, and agricultural fertility; but I wouldn’t like living there. Unfortunately, it has been co-opted by the progressive left – I wish you well in countering/rebuilding (from) the damage they’ve done.

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 7:32pmIt‘s hard to win if you’re team’s the only one playing by the rules. Unfortunately, all we can do is work harder. Cheating, in spite of a recent cultural shift to the contrary -is Not the American way. Truth, Justice, Honesty, and Hard work. Considering this I can fairly say, “Progressives and their liberal enablers (Dem and Rhino) are un-American. I don’t care how many years they may have served or what church they attend.” <-that was not a shot at you, Calidude.
Report Post »Honestly, if we could con some country into taking them, we should offer this Amnesty deal: 1 for 1. One honest, hardworking illegal gets nationalized, for every progressive or welfare receipient we can revoke citizenship for and deport. I mean, they don't like America anyway, if you listen to them. Michelle never had any American pride until her husband got elected. Sounds like a child, "I hate this game, it's too hard.. yadda, yadda…I won! This game is awesome! Let's play again!"

Thank you, from a native Californian. I lived there my first 20 years of life and would still live there if not for the economy. The fact of it is, the big cities everyone knows about are pretty well populated with strange people. The rest of California is not like that at all. I received an amazing education, lived in a beautiful area, and yeah- I appreciated having the beach and mountains within a few hours drive of my house. My city was well organized, my community was tight-knit. While we are home to some of the biggest liars, idiots and progressives alive, they are by no means an accurate representation of the population. Teachers and Universities are liberal pretty much everywhere, so it’s not like California is the only place. That only forced me to be more secure in my beliefs and challenged me to share it with others. The only way California is going to be saved from the ruling minority is if people like Calidude and others are here to build it back up when it fails- and yes, I hope it goes bankrupt.
