NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say three people were killed in a pileup involving 10 vehicles on the famed Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California.
Newport Beach police Lt. Bill Hartford said three adults from two vehicles were killed in the “extremely violent” crash Saturday, and three others were hospitalized, one of them in critical condition.
Two cars were overturned and some people were trapped inside their vehicles.
Hartford says a pair of vehicles was involved in the initial collision and eight more became entangled in the wreck.
Authorities say the highway remained closed hours after the accident and was likely to be shut down through the night.
The famous highway runs along the ocean through many of California’s most scenic stretches and most expensive neighborhoods.

Caused by ONE car, according to bystanders he talked to. ONE car…speeding out of control, flying in the air, breaking all laws…while the rest of the cars and people in the crosswalk at this crowded intersection were minding their own business and at this car’s mercy.
All this…caused by ONE out of control driver! No change in any law could have prevented horrendous act!
Our neighbor was pretty shaken.

Report Post »I had the ‘intelligent conversation’. You chose to be sarcastic. BTW, I don’t gawk. Since we’re going to get pi$$y, let me ask you this.
What does me trying to give some useful info have to do with gawking?.
Did I pi$$ you off because of my ‘idiot’ comment with regards to tail-gaters who should just pass the car in front of them? Does that Hummer make you feel like a man?
Someone may pause to consider my advise, and save their life because of it.

Report Post »I will not speak for DRHunt, but I assume he meant that there was no reason for Rick to extrapolate, somehow, that I might be an accident ‘gawker’ for simply saying what you referred to in a later post. That was that we’ve driven for 100 years and still do stupid things while driving. I agree with DRHunt that Rick’s reply to me was unneccessary, and not the intelligent conversation that Rick claims to want, and that we should have. I was trying to say I’ve seen some awfully aggressive driving in my time. Btw, I agree with you on the ‘ still not driving safely’ part.
My remark about medical costs with regards to traffic accidents was to say that those costs are one of the reasons (not a small one, btw) of high healthcare costs.
I also think that drivers licenses are much too easy to obtain, and that the priviledge way too hard to take away. We have tons of illegals here in S Jersey. They are involved in a disproportionate amount of accidents. Many times, the local paper adds in the article that there is a ‘detainer issued to ICE’ due to the perp being illegal, with no insurance, registration, or drivers license.
The drivers test here in NJ is probably as hard as most states. Still, it is too easy. I asked my grand-daughter, when she was taking drivers ed in HS, did the instructor ask this and that. Often, her reply was “no”, or “a little”. Things likeproper following distance, speed, slowing down at all intersections, etc.
Maybe the victims of the Ca. accident had no chance. Sometimes that can be the case. There is just too much to being a defensive driver that cannot be taught in the classroom.
Which brings me to the Healthcare debate…Why, in the name of God, wouldn’t it be more prudent to focus on one the things that cause healthcare to be needed in the first place, such as auto-crashes.

Posted on January 16, 2011 at 10:18amActually peoples driving habits can say a lot about a society. Yes accident do happen but hasn’t anyone taken notice that the more time goes on the worse more and more people drive? Too many people worried more about the cellphone the ipod the laptop the radio etc etc. Too many people these days in a big hurry going nowhere. Ever see someone cut a bunch of people off in full roadrage mode just to go two blocks to a minimart? It seems lots of people are like Rain Man defiantly proclaiming “I’m an excellent driver!” Meanwhile they can’t stop running over the curb! And these are the people we allow to vote? I’m all for an end to universal sufferage.

Posted on January 16, 2011 at 1:34pmI agree with you only as far as your point on drivers habits relating to our society. As a school bus driver doing about 240 miles a day, I see idiots on the road all the time with no regard for anyone else…especially when they tailgate 10 feet from a bus full of kids on the freeway rather than pass in the passing lane…enough said.
Report Post »I do take exception to your comment “And these are the people we allow to vote? ”
Do you really feel this way? Who is the “we” you are talking about?? As dumb as some people are, who do think should make the decision on who is “allowed” to vote?? Just wondering.

Posted on January 16, 2011 at 10:05amBe a profound thinker. I am still thinking. Undecided. Perhaps with short term thinking.
In the past 30 years the explosive nature of media has eroded the mind of individuals. By purpose? In my lifetime this“ horrific” event would have been viewed by those citizens that lived and worked in the vicinity. Local media. The carnival ride that distorts the senses of balance and clarity must always become ever violent to create a ‘new’ sensation. Or, one just out grows the need for artificial confusion.
The 8-28 event may be one of those balance and clarity events. The general media has noted, rightfully so, the calmness of that event is beginning to appear across the Nation. Recalling the Capitol event where the un-professional politicians attempted to agitate a group of common citizens exercising the ‘peaceful assembly’. The power of the ruling elite, that has their own interpretation of civil, is upon us.

Posted on January 16, 2011 at 12:30pmSBLEVE, very true words my friend. But it goes even further. When you look at the blatant and hypocritical propaganda that the MSM puts out, and 80% is propaganda. It may be true and somewhat factual, but with a political spin. Or it may be a bold faced lie designed to temper the attitudes of the citizens BEFORE an event begins to unfold. The Right AND the Left are guilty of this. Even people that think they can see through propaganda are often sucked in by these Masters of Propaganda.
Here is one that was tossed out before Christmas. “Madoff’s attorney is considering requesting his client be released from jail and deported to Israel where he will be monitored by the Israelis.” It went on to talk about his health, his safety in prison, the cost of confining him, etc. Question: is this a trial balloon sent up to prepare people for the idea? Did you hear any discussion about this little burp of so-called news? Do I expect this request to come up this year? Yep, sure do.
Bottom line, propaganda WORKS! Always has. They continue to barrage the listener or viewer with false or misleading information, half-truths and in many instances complete lies. The propagandists easily sway people that have little time or desire to listen to honest political discussions or have no real interest in politics whatsoever. Propaganda works particulrly well on impressonable young adults as well as people with very little education, but works on everyone to some degree. The real question remains. Does propaganda, when used by the government (through U.S. media outlets) against the citizens of the United States, constitute an illegal act? Does the government have a responsibility to not use or endorse domestic propaganda? When does freedom of speech go too far? Are presenting opinions and bold faced lies as facts actually covered by the 1st Amendment?

Don‘t like ’theblaze’,huh, Nick? So, crashes can be reported on TV, but not here?
The point for people to learn is this: initially, two cars are in an accident, one driver made a mistake, and one, then the other 8, cars were involved because of failing to obey defensive-driving practices.
You want to talk about health-care costs? Whats this crash gonna cost?
That is always the case, with the exception of someone having a heart attack, stroke, or seizure, etc.
Report Post »I have had much defensive-driving training, ridden motorcycles for 34 years, and have never had a crash. I’ve conducted Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses, and by all accounts, am an expert in defensive-driving and riding.
A common mistake is tail-gating, going too fast for conditions, etc. I’m always amused when I see some idiot driving one car length behind someone at 75 mph, especially on an interstate when NO other cars are around, and they could simply just pass the car in front. People simply have no concept of how to drive defensively. If you asked 10 people what is the safe following distance on dry vs. wet roads, 8 would have no clue. If you don’t believe me, then watch the next time it rains or snows, and remember, 3 secs on dry, and double on wet. Most don’t even know how to figure out how far they are (in sec) from the vehicle in front.
Every time I read about a motorcyclist being killed by a car turning left in front of them I cringe. Of course, the car driver caused the crash by turning left, but that doesn’t mean the motorcyclist had to be involved. There are certain indicators you look for to determine the likelyhood of that car driver invading your space. That’s the whole damn point with regards to def-driving.
People just don’t use common sense. Period!
Nick, ‘theblaze’ puts the crash report on the site, someone reads my comments, and maybe they pick up something that could save their life.
Who knows? Maybe I’m being too far right?

Posted on January 16, 2011 at 11:23amHave to agree with Nickderinger. Like the Bus incident in Venezuela reported on by the Blaze, these are unfortunate incidents and there are many things these events can remind us of. I live in SoCal and have driven PCH many times…a few of those times I should perhaps have not been driving. Its a dangerous road, and the stretch through NPB gets complicated even more by kids and alcohol on Friday and Saturday night.
HOWEVER, these are not events that I tune into The Blaze to learn about. Car accidents and protests gone wrong are tragic, yes, but are everyday occurrences that I almost take for granted are happening all over the world. Internet real estate is precious and the eyeballs drawn to websites can be fickle.
I hope The Blaze can refocus, or these eyeballs may find other places to scan.

Raise the level of discourse, and I’d be happy to oblige. But since we’re on the subject of blog content here, perhaps you can comment on the wholesale tripe that’s posted on liberal ones, like huffington, MM, Think Progress or the Kos? Those cesspools of liberal trash make even this story look Pulitzer in comparison. Ever been down to Newport Beach recently? What was once a fairly nice area, is now Tijuana North, the parking lot at the pier is overrun by illegals, and the Strand is becoming ground zero for crimes “waiting to happen”. This is the bigger story, not this horrific accident. But please continue with your phi beta kappa responses.

Posted on January 16, 2011 at 12:11pm@DRHUNT… I’m sorry, but I think I mixed up the monikers, and upon going through the threads, I realized it. My apologies. And no, I don’t have any problem with your discourse on this site… your recounting of the various SoCal issues is more of the type I’d rather come here for. The libiot sites you refer to can only hold my interest for short periods (seeing what the other side has to say) as they are, to sum it up… GIGO… and so repetitious as to be a time waster.
That said, and the apology is humble, I believe it is an indication of the impossibility of having a conversation on the Blaze anyway… I really would hope that sooner, rather than later, the management behind the scenes of the Blaze can get their act together with more literate writing, editing, and suitably less confusing format for posting and replying to threads. Faster servers and better software format?
