Horrifying Conditions at Indonesian Zoo Leaves Giraffe Dead, Others Starving

SURABAYA, Indonesia (The Blaze/AP) — At an Indonesian zoo, tigers are emaciated and the 180 pelicans packed so tightly they cannot unfurl their wings without hitting a neighbor. Last week, a giraffe died with a beachball-sized wad of plastic food wrappers in its belly.

This 30-year-old giraffe died from the zoo's squalid conditions.

Activists seek a plastic ban at the zoo after the giraffe died.

The conditions at Indonesia’s largest zoo are crowded and food is scarce. The zoo was once the considered one of the most impressive collections in Southeast Asia, established nearly a century ago.

But today the Surabaya Zoo is a nightmare, plagued by uncontrolled breeding, a lack of funding for general animal welfare and even persistent suspicions that members of its own staff are involved in illegal wildlife trafficking. Representatives at the zoo said that management turnovers and some ill will among staff has the animals suffering the consequences.

Instead of apathetically ignoring onlookers like many zoo animals, this bear begs for any sort of food.

This AP report delves into some of the issues at the zoo that has bears begging for peanuts:

So is somebody going to get those poor animals out of that zoo. I thought Indonesia was pretty much a zoo anyway, so why bother caging hopeless animals.

OMG!!! I grew up going to this zoo every weekend with my grandpa‘s brother’s family. I can’t believe that it has deteriorated like this….It’s very sad. We used to go there on school trips too. One of the highlights of my childhood.
Well, this is what happened when you have corrupt government run things.

You know I am far from a PETA type and I definitely do not have a problem with people who hunt using sound and humane and conservation based methods…..but I am pretty torn about the entire “Zoo” thing. I am not even all that thrilled about places like Sea World. I suppose there is a valid reason for Zoos….Sea World not so much…..but I can tell you all this for sure……if I were a Lion or a Tiger or an Elephant….and I was kept in a Zoo…..you better have a Weatherby rifle loaded and within reach….because I have a feeling that I might be one of those zoo creatures that becomes unhinged and unglued….and I would trample and trounce and rip apart every human being I could get my hooves or claws on. But that’s just me…..and after all what do I know? I’m the same guy who roots for the Bulls every year in Pamplona……there’s nothing that wakes up a stupid human being quicker than a 2 foot horn rammed up the G.I. tract.

Relax! OUR Commie/muslim-in chief is brining this to a country near you….It’s HERE! Every single election for over 100yrs, the democrats claim they are the ones to get you out of [fill in the gap___]. But after each election they 100%-reverse what they claimed during the elections so the [fill in gap___] continues. so the democrats can continuously re-use it for the next..and the next…and the next… …. …. …. …. .

I think MEMRI has video of the “zoo” run by the muslims in Israel where children are encouraged to swing cats around by the tails.

Yet another alien aspect to Islamic Culture. Cruelty to animals is enshrined in Islam.

If I ever saw a child do that to a cat, I would first punch the little b@sturd in the face (boy or girl – doesn’t matter) and then encourage the feline to exercise their claws on the little turds genitals…

I am no PETA type either… But Animal abuse is wrong NO MATTER WHAT. I am losing so much respect for humanity as a whole that I am almost to the point that I would happily kill a human to save an animal…

Humans have free will, so their abuse of an animal is ALWAYS a choice… Where as animals ONLY act on instinct and affection. They only do things when they feel they have to.

Humans can be evil, animals cannot be. THAT (and opposable thumbs and a language system) are the only real things that set us apart from our brethren in the animal kingdom.

The people who run this zoo should be forced to starve for a while and then be forced to eat plastic bags the way these animals are….

      Just deserts…

My memory was a bit off. It was actually an Islamic children’s show “Tomorrow’s Pioneers” about Nahool the Bumblebee. He wanted to go see the cat exhibit at the Gaza “zoo”. (I know, I know, how many zoos even have house cats on display!)

Anyway, once Nahool the Muslim Mouse see the cats, strong feelings begin to overtake him and begins to devise ways to abuse them. An expression of Islamic culture ensues and cats are abused.

      To quote the show:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomorrow's_Pioneers
On the show, Nahoul has expressed radical views. He has stated such things as: “We will liberate Al-Aqsa from the filth of the criminal Jews,”[28] and “We will go on Jihad when we grow up.”[28] In episode 204, Nahoul visits the zoo where streaks of cruelty become apparent for the (first?) time. Nahoul states: “The cats here are asleep – the poor, wretched, imprisoned cats. I feel like abusing them. This cat is asleep. I feel like attacking it.” [29] Nahoul then proceeds to swing cats by their tails and throw them around their cage.[29] Saraa later chides him for this.”

This is Islamic culture propagating its values to the next generation.

If the region is impoverished why would they take on the burden of housing a number of animals they cannot care for? Just to give them a torturous slow death? Or for breeding the animals to illegal traffickers for money, leading to nothing but cruel fate?
If they released the animals to the wild, no doubt the locals will hunt them down like a hoard of zombies for their next meal. The people in charge of the facility have a responsibilty to be good stuarts and maintain their humanity and do what is right.

They should contact WSPA, Humane Society, Red Cross or other charitable organizations requesting assistance in placing the animals in a proper environment. That region clearly has more important issues to deal with. Like establishing a steady agriculture. Sadly corruption has settled in and that regions moral compass is off.

Islamic culture, if it can be called that, does not value life or the living. They love death and blood spilled on the altar of Allah, enshrined in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. They think nothing of beheading and mutilating people, why would they give a crap about “stinking” animals?

How miserable must be a Nation able to lock animals for life at the same time of denying at least adequate nourishment, enough clean water and a nice place to live. If Indonesia can not achieve it, they must search to find better places for all their animals. Maybe in semi captivity, the responsibility is theirs!!!

That is so sad, if only PETA was there, they would seize those poor animals, and euthanize them.

On a lighter note, this past weekend, there were pork ribs packed so tightly in my refrigerator, I had to BBQ them and put them down, one by one.

The people are infected with Islamic culture which is spread by muslims using the process of Jihad.

Reduce the influence of Islam and the people will begin caring for the zoo again. What we in the West consider cruel, is to the islam-infected, good fun, a cultural expression, and pleasing to Allah.
