Horrifying: Palestinians Protest After Man Murders Wife in Bethlehem Market After Divorce Hearing

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (The Blaze/AP) — The brutal killing of a battered wife in front of a crowd of horrified witnesses in an open-air Bethlehem market prompted angry accusations Wednesday that Palestinian police and courts ignore violence against women.
Nancy Zaboun, a 27-year-old mother of three, had her throat slashed Monday after seeking a divorce from her abusive husband of 10 years. The husband was arrested at the scene, West Bank officials said.
The case reverberated across Palestinian society because of the brutality of the attack. However, violence against women continues to be tolerated — similar to attitudes in other parts of the Arab world — and women’s rights activists say abusive husbands are rarely punished.
Zaboun was regularly beaten by her husband, 32-year-old Shadi Abedallah, at times so severely that she had to be hospitalized, said Haula al-Azraq, who runs a West Bank counseling center where Zaboun sought help.
Even so, Abedallah was never arrested. Police only made him sign “pledges” he would stop hitting his wife, al-Azraq explained, adding that Abedallah himself is a former police officer.

Zaboun was killed after attending a hearing in her divorce case. She was walking on the steep paths of an open-air market — not far from the Church of the Nativity, marking the traditional birthplace of Jesus — when she was attacked.
On Wednesday, several dozen brave women staged a memorial for Zaboun in the Bethlehem market alley where she was killed, holding signs and chanting, “No to violence against women.” One photographed sign read: “Shame on us Palestinians for killing our women.”
Women have scored a number of breakthroughs in traditional Palestinian society in recent years, including gaining a greater role in public life, but tribal laws still remain strong. Violence against women is generally viewed by police as an internal family matter, so even if a woman is able to call for help, the police are of limited value.
Though Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signed a decree last year that ended a long-standing practice of treating killings within a family with leniency, Al-Azraq said violence against women appears to be on the rise. In her opinion, the deteriorating Palestinian economy and the fact that abusers don’t fear punishment is likely the cause.
Zaboun’s husband could face life in prison if convicted, a minister assured the public, but it remains to be seen whether Zaboun’s case slips through the cracks, or whether there will be a fair trial.

According to the Associated Press, Zaboun was married at age 17 and has three children, ages eight, six and three. Al-Azraq said the beatings began immediately after her wedding.
Abdel Fattah Hemayel, the district governor of Bethlehem, said the authorities did step in at some point, attempting to solve what he described as a “family dispute,” confirming that the husband was asked to sign pledges to stop beating his wife.
Rabiha Diab, the women’s affairs minister in the Palestinian government, said the killing of Zaboun– and the failure to step in at any point over the last 10 years– are troubling.
“Every once in a while, there is a case that makes us feel worried and afraid that we are going back to square one (as women),” she said.
Diab added: “We should set an example [here] because … he slaughtered her like a sheep.”

If a supposed Christian is beat his wife he is direct contradiction of Christ teaching and is not represented of the faith. A true orthodox Christian force his hand or be violent to others because he is commanded to do so.
On the other hand Qu’ran promote this behavior and actually commands it. A true orthodox Muslim are violent to woman and infidels because they are commanded to do so.
The difference is in the actual text. People point out similarity in the stories and characters but the commands and teachings are nothing alike. The God of the Qu’ran & Bible are nothing alike. One is a God of force, punishment and hate the other is a God of freedom, choice, forgiveness and love.
I recommend reading both the Bible and Qu’ran.
They are not the same or even similar. They both will lead you some where. The text is key and what they actually teach and what type of life style they require.

There are already judges in the USA who believe that Sharia Law should override the law of the land for Muslim families. Can you image! Sharia law = slavery of woman, PERIOD.
What this means is our country is going backwards and accepting slavery AGAIN. Instead of it being the black, it is the Arab woman. A slavemaster in court can claim he is a Muslim so his property (wife) gets little or no representation in court. This is a back door into condoning slavery in this country. Where are the African Americans on this crying “not on our watch”, “not again” Any Judge that entertains Sharia Law needs to have their @ss tossed out so fast they bounce!

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 3:53pmAlthough it likely won’t stop the words here, I haven’t read anything in the article blaming his actions on his religious beliefs or citing them as the cause; he‘d been abusing her for years and there’s no mention that it was because of his belief. Growing up with a toxic belief can have an effect of course; but it’s not like there are no abusive fathers and husbands in the US, nor is it unknown for women to not receive the support or help they need to escape the abuse. Hatred can take root in all hearts, no matter what faith the person follows.
Pray for this woman’s children and other women in similar situations around the world.

It is their religion that tells them it is okay to do with women as they please. The wives are not free, and they are considered as slaves or toys, an object to do with as one pleases. READ about the “religion” of Islam, and be informed. He may have already been a brutal and vicious man, but his religion gave him the “permission” to treat his wife in this heinous manner, murdering her – Islam does not allow women to have any rights.

Please try reading my comment again. I said there’s nothing in the article about him committing this murder for religious reasons, but said that his religious upbringing likely had an effect on him.
To pose another question: Jews are commanded by God to stone adulterers to death, yet do not do so. Is the difference the religious teachings, or the upbringing? Christians are commanded by Paul to see women as less than men. Does that mean we do so? (Well, I certainly don’t, but I can’t presume to speak for all Christians).

She honestly has been brainwashed (undoubtedly from birth) into believing that western woman were inferior to her and were not “free” and unworthy to wear the hijab. I wanted to cry out for her, she was so conditioned that she was unable to see truth for herself. Might explain how the slavemaster can keep a berka on his property in western society (not to mention fear of death/beatings), he convinces her that she is the “free” one. These woman have been so abused and conditioned into believing that they are the worthy ones to be wearing the hefty bag when it is 100 degrees in the shade. The western culture has learned that women are our mothers, sisters, and daughters and without women, we as Humans will cease to exist. How can a religion condone this type of treatment of women? Doesn’t people realize that their culture/society will cease to exist without women?

Just look at these people and watch how they behave. Anybody have an older family friend or relative that only appears to be at peace when they’re complaining about an ache or pain? It’s the same thing here, only these people are only truly content when somebody is capped – even if it is their own. Even thru the tears you can see the contentedness – it’s creepy.

It can not be terror because terror is not a group. It has been since the beginning extreme/radical/militant Islam, Sharia law and Muslims.

This has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with misogyny. I have known several fellow Christians over the years that have beaten their wives and I do not blame my Christianity for it.

If a supposed Christian is beat his wife he is direct contradiction of Christ teaching and is not represented of the faith. A true orthodox Christian force his hand or be violent to others because he is commanded to do so.
On the other hand Qu’ran promote this behavior and actually commands it. A true orthodox Muslim are violent to woman and infidels because they are commanded to do so.
The difference is in the actual text. People point out similarity in the stories and characters but the commands and teachings are nothing alike. The God of the Qu’ran & Bible are nothing alike. One is a God of force, punishment and hate the other is a God of freedom, choice, forgiveness and love.
I recommend reading both the Bible and Qu’ran.
