Hot Mic? Off-Camera Conversation About ‘They’ Being Happy With ‘Black People Drowning’ Heard on ABC Live Stream

People who turned to ABCNews.com for live streaming video coverage of the Republican National Convention on Monday were treated to a strange off-camera conversation about “black people drowning.”

“Feel free to say it,” one woman can be heard saying, “they’re not concerned at all. They’re — ”

“They are happy to have a party with black people drowning,” said Yahoo! News Washington bureau chief David Chalian, as NewsBusters was the first to report.

Who’s the “they” in that sentence and why was his remark about “black people drowning” met with laughter?

You can hear their comments at the very beginning of this video:

To be fair, we are coming in on the tail end of their discussion. Some have speculated that the people in the video are referring to the GOP ‘s decision to continue with its convention in Tampa, Fla., despite the fact that hurricane Isaac has made landfall in New Orleans. But, again, we don’t have the full context of the conversation.

Still, the “black people drowning” remark — and the laughter it incites — probably would not have happened had the participants known the microphones were still recording.

UPDATE — TheBlaze reached out to Yahoo! for comment on Chalian’s remarks and received the following statement:

David Chalian’s statement was inappropriate and does not represent the views of Yahoo!.  He has been terminated effective immediately. We have already reached out to the Romney campaign, and we apologize to Mitt Romney, his staff, their supporters and anyone who was offended.

    How different is this from what they usually insinuate? They are the racists ( Dems were the ones who have always obstructed blacks from being truly free. It’s no different today through the web of government programs entangling so many Americans- The ones in the programs and the ones forced to pay for them) and who cares… nobody is watching them anymore.

      Don’t trust the MSM. On another blog they said a CNN camerawoman said 2 GOP conventioneers threw peanuts at her and called her a monkey. Funny, the camera person didn’t film it when she could have. I don’t believe it happened. LIES from MSM.
      Blacks have been held down by the Democrat party for years and they keep taking it. No wonder the intelligent blacks are moving over to the Republican party……….after all a Republican freed the slaves.
      To be a Democrats is like being kept down on the plantation; that’s what the Dems want.

      Even some of the black congress treat their own like they still live down on the farm. I find it very

      Isn’t it interesting that ABC has “righteous” indignation about the Repub. convention taking place during a hurricane – calling it a “party” – when there was no such indignation about Michelle Obama taking an entourage on vacation in Spain when 8.5% of Americans were out of work and inflation had kicked in with regard to food and energy prices, keeping those Americans still working living at a hand-to-mouth existence. That was a real party held at our expense, yet there was not a peep from anyone in the MSM about the extravagance of her fete when Americans were suffering under Obama’s economic policies. BTW, I have yet to hear of any “black people drowning.”

      ANYTHING they say about the other party is something they themselves are doing.
      It’s like the jealous spouse who is always accusing their wife/husband of cheating while
      they themselves are the one who is doing it. They justify it so much in their own minds,
      They fully realize how destructive their own statements/actions are.
      This is why they accuse others of it first (with or without basis) -it takes the light off themselves,
      and gives them the aura of never stooping to such a hideous deed. It’s all part of their make up,
      again, just like the violent, addictive, cheating spouse.
      Perhaps their own actions have distorted their views so much, they can no longer recognize reality.
      But actually they do, because they always play to the audience they have (meaning they will tailor

    What good is this story?

    All it does is show that “working folks” – like the cameraman at ABC and some union “sound guy” are having a conversation about what they think about Republicans.

    This story serves NO good purpose except to indirectly continue the sterotype that Republicans are rich and uncaring about the middle class. (Which could not be further from the truth)

    Many posters to this website have said as much.
    Republican racism is one of the Hard Truths that Gov. Cristie could have been talking about.

    Theblaze plays the race card constantly and such sentiments can be found daily.

    Just this weekend some poster wrote how he was proud of his racism.

    Such posts could be from people trying to embarrass theblaze but often the racist comments come from frequent posters.

    Then there is Mr. Beck who said that the pendulum has swung to far in favor of minorities and called for a new civil rights movement for whites.

      Theblaze plays the race card when it chooses what stories to copy and in the editorializing that accompanies those copied stories.

      For months they had daily videos pulled from youtube of blacks involved in altercations of one sort or another.
      Save Alan West, the Utah Mayor, and other very few exceptions, every portrayal of Blacks is negative.

      Then there is the portrayal of Latinos.

      And worst of all is Arabs.

      Mr. Beck became famous for saying the President was a racist. He repeated the comment on many other talk shows and forums.
      Then he lied and said he only said it once because it was early in the morning and he was tired and the President was really a colonialist, after reading D‘souza’s book.

      When talking about some white liberal’s quote, Mr Beck said the worst form of racism is accusing others of being racist.

      I go to VladTepesblog (there are several other good news aggregators) to get News on Islam. The MSM simple does edits out most attacks by Islamicists by violence on the political system.

When a minority female wishing to apply for a scholarship for minority females & she is told she need not apply, I say affirmative action is a lie.       All liberal news reporters should be monitored with recording devices so their nonobjective & partisan slant can be shown.

      If a recording is made hidden mic, they feel safe to spew. We can get voice prints to verify it was a news person.

      Imagine an lame stream news media reporter afraid to speak again on or off camera because they know Republican campaign workers have a voice recording of saying something stupid or racist. All they need is video recording to match the voice print with a face & a name.

      Rush Limbaugh predicted that the liberal media would juxtapose the Hurricane hitting New Orleans with the RNC convention with split screens. He provided over a half dozen clips of liberal newstards to back up his assertion.

      People will be suffering greatly somewhere in the world next week when the Democrats hold their convention but their will be nary a word from the brown-nosing media.

      If you hold a convention during the time period of August thru October there is a good chance that a Hurricane will hit America. It is a little known to ‘tards’ link Wango that August thru October is hurricane season.
