House Approves Controversial DREAM Act

With the final days of the 111th Congress winding down, Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill bet on a last-ditch showdown over immigration reform Wednesday evening as the House of Representatives narrowly approved the DREAM Act — the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2010.  The LA Times reports:

The legislation would give hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants a chance at becoming legal. The requirements state that, to be eligible, a person must have been brought to the United States before he or she was 16, been in the United States for five years, earned a high-school degree and be attending college or be in the military.

In recent days, Democrats had aimed to pick up some Republican support by dropping the maximum eligible age from 35 to 29, extending the waiting period for a green card from six to 10 years and eliminating the requirement that DREAM Act youth pay tuition at in-state rates rather than out-of-state rates. In-state tuition, which is what undocumented students in California pay, amounts to an average annual public subsidy of about $6,000 nationally per student.

Some Democrats, in an effort to attract Republicans in agricultural states, had also pushed to add to the DREAM Act provisions to ease the process to bring in legal farm workers.

The bill now moves to the Senate where a vote is scheduled for Thursday.  However, most doubt Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., will have the 60 votes needed to overcome Republican opposition.

The issue of immigration reform was a pivotal one for many Latino voters who showed up at the polls in support of Democrats during the midterm elections this fall.  With a plan for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s immigration system permanently stalled, Democrats hoped the DREAM Act would be a signature success of the Democrat-controlled White House and Congress.

The Obama administration reiterated its strong support of the DREAM Act  in a statement delivered Wednesday: “While the broader immigration debate continues, the administration urges the Senate to take this important step and pass the DREAM Act.”  But with Republicans ready to retake control of the House of Representatives in January, the measure signaled Democrats’ last chance to deliver tangible change for their supporters before President Obama faces reelection in 2012.

Facing defeat, immigration advocates say they won’t give up. In coming months, the LA Times reports, these advocacy groups will assess their options — including recruiting supporters from a growing number of Latino voters as 2012 national elections draw nearer.

I lived in Dallas and couldn’t even let my dog swim in the lakes. The Mexicans had so much broken glass – and pour their dirty oil change where ii sits down by the water… I had many Central American friends that were always generous, thoughtful, polite and mostly spoke at least some English..

But are we to play politics with America’s citizenship? We welcome all through the FRONT DOOR…… Willingly, charitably, proudly. We have the Statue of Liberty they should all see on the way in..

Be it know, 21:01 Eastern standard time, the US house passed the so called DREAM Act, this was only hours after voting to recognize the 2500th anniversary of the battle of Marathon, Greece.

In preparation for this vote, and others sure to come to close the loopholes, I made sure my neighbors and friends went through the immigration and citizenship process with my wife, so they could speak intelligently about the topic and understand the system may have its flaws, but the IMMIGRATION SYSTEM IS NOT BROKE.

Currently her mother is awaiting court date in January to legally adjust her passport to legally visit or be sponsored. Her brother has not even attempted the 22 YEAR WAIT for him to be LEGALLY sponsored. at least 1 rep noted an undocumented staff member, which I’m sure was promptly reported to the authorities.

Many dems said this was not amnesty, they are right, amnesty is a forgiveness of committed wrongs. This was reward, payback, compensation, appreciation. If these “children” are so bright, upstanding, and full of potential imagine the problems they could fix in their own countries. They already are encouraged by many of “our” representatives already encourage them daily to take pride in their homeland, not their “adopted” country that in the movements words belittle, abuse, and exploit them.

I thought it was Pelosi that said we should educate the illegals. She said she wouldn’t want a doctor
working on her that didn’t have a good education, something to that context. Which got me
thinking, if they educate the illegals as doctors then we will have doctors in the U.S. that will be
happy to accept the pigeon droppings the government pays them, thereby allowing one aspect of
Obama-Snare to succeed. I’ve had 2 specialists quit on me, and one retire.

How many US citizens will sacrifice seats in our colleges due to “new standards of affirmative action”? With the feds now controlling the student loan program, and insistence on flooding the college system with folks who may lack basic English, math, and reading skills, the cost of this will be staggering. The US taxpayer will finance ESL classes, college entrance remedial training programs, child care costs and transportation to the local community college while getting the skills to compete at our “basic” college entrance level. Then the taxpayer will finance to the greatest degree possible, the two year education in private sector and perhaps four year college educations for military prospects. Then of course when the anchors apply for ESL classes or remedial training, they will get taxpayer assistance as well.

Our government is clueless. Misfeasant and Malfeasant is the best way to describe the United States Government’s handling of border security and illegal immigration. Our politicians fail to understand that, no law that they can pass, no amount of Border Patrol Agents or National Guardsmen on the Border will stop illegal immigration and the threat on our national sovereignty.

The answer? As long as there is “Hope”, illegal immigrants will continue to come, they will continue to take the necessary risks associated with illegal entry into the United States. Take away their “Hope” and illegal immigration will trickle to a stop. We can take away that “Hope” by taking away the jobs. If our government is so eager to pass legislation, pass legislation that will make employing illegal immigrants so horribly dangerous that they simply will not do it. Corporate as well as personal asset forfeiture for employers that benefit from illegal labor. Horrendous fines per illegal immigrant found to be employed. Take away the jobs and illegal immigrants will have no more reason to come, take away the jobs and we will not have to worry about “How” to remove millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States as they will self deport when they have no more jobs.

The “Myth” that illegal immigrants come here to do the work Americans don’t want to do is simply that…a “Myth”. They come here to do the jobs that employers are unwilling to pay an American a decent wage to do. Take away that “Paid Slave Labor” of the illegal immigrant and employers will be forced to employ United States citizens and LEGAL residents under the protection of the nations labor laws. That will of course, raise prices but, why not pay 25 cents more a pound for tomatoes rather than steep health insurance premiums to cover uninsured illegal immigrant health care. High car insurance to cover “Uninsured Motorist” (Illegal immigrant) drivers, and higher local and school taxes to educate illegal immigrant children. Then, maybe our Border Patrol can manage our borders they way they should.

Border Security and illegal immigration can happen tomorrow but, not with any plan our government has put forth so far.

Forcing employers to employ United States citizens and LEGAL residents will reduce unemployment, working Americans are less of a burden on social services, working Americans pay taxes reducing the deficit. Then, if there is still a need for “Imported” labor, willing applicants can list themselves with the U.S. Consulate in their country allowing background checks on applicants ensuring we are not allowing criminals to enter the United States. Once approved, U.S. employers can request “X” amount of employees by location. Work Visas can then be issued for cleared applicants to enter and work in the United States. We will then know who, when, where, and why a foriegn national is entering the United States, where they will be, and what they will be doing. After a pre-determined period of time, if the worker has abided by the laws of the United States, they can then apply to adjust their status to a legal resident and ultimately U.S. citizenship providing that “Path to Citizenship”

      @kaen,

Get rid of the minimum wage, and prices will start to normalize, and the value of the US Dollar will reflect the actual worth of things – remember, the US Dollar is fiat money, so the value written on the paper is not directly relevant to the actual value of the good or service.

Also, if we get rid of the minimum wage, then other countries like Mexico and China can’t underbid our workers here.

Is there an upper age limit on this DREAM Act? I can’t find one – it says you need to have entered country before 16th birthday, have been in country for 5 yrs, and not have been convicted of any crime that results in a sentence of more than 1 year in jail…

My problem is that after the revolutionary war the citizens had a valid fear of soldiers. Not only did they have to deal with being under martial law from soldiers from their own government but also foreign soldiers called Hessian’s. These were soldiers that carried all the same authority as British soldiers but had no connection to the people. They didn’t hold the same values or care about the citizens like the British would have. So here’s the problem. You take a citizen of Mexico and have them represent the US on the battle field or in emergency’s inside the US. Is it even possible for them to truly represent US citizens? Would there be the same connection to the US citizen that is in a civil rights movement? Even if they wanted to I don’t think they could.

I disagree, and altough I haven’t read the bill, on the surface i agree with it. if someone, not of their choosing, was brought here as a child and serves in the United States military, then i think they have earned their right to citizenship. Their parents, when the child has earned this right, should be deported as a criminal. But I don‘t feel it is the child’s fault. However….just graduating college? Nosir. That does NOT earn you citizenship.

If the Republic means so little to an elected official that they are willing to invite those who hate the Republic to become citizens, then they have violated their oath to the Constitution, and should be prosecuted for treason.

Can we march on Washington before they adjourn for the holidays???? Lots of shouting and carrying signs calling them traitors, etc., etc. Not quite as quiet as MLK and his march; but at least it will be peaceful. I’ll meet anyone in Washington if we all agree to do this.

Good Thinking…that makes me also think about the possibility of a coup. It is always said that ‘the US Military would never support a coup.’ If the soldiers are not lawful US citizens, why will they care about shooting down Americans? The Hessians were BRUTAL, raping and murdering innocent civilians. You are on to something! This is perhaps a means to destroying the purity of our military by filling it with non-citizens for the purpose of turning it against us.

If the we the people, out of compassion, wanted to grant these “children” green cards, limit it to ONLY them. But this law allows chain migration to the very people who broke the law AND all their relatives.
Americans as a whole are fair and compassionate. However, we’re sick and tired of being used and abused. If the Senate passes this abomination, it may very well be time for pitchforks.

Remember the 8 Republicans who crossed the aisle on this one… Immigration enforcement is spreading across our great land because most Americans still believe in our sovereignty and the rule of law… It’s taken ten years for proponents of the so-called DREAM Act to get it this far, and may it go down in flames in the Senate. May common sense and justice prevail…

The Dems would make the devil a citizen if he promised to vote for them. They do not care for the people of this country. All they care about is keeping power and control through controlling the vote. Obamas ratings: 45% approve. People on handouts from the Gov’t 45%. Coiencidence? hardly.
