WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leader John Boehner isn’t planning on giving up his cigarettes, even if he becomes House speaker.
The Ohio lawmaker was asked on CBS’ “Face the Nation” how he could keep smoking given the connection between cigarettes and cancer.
Boehner said tobacco is legal and people have a right to decide for themselves whether to smoke or not.
Asked if people should be encouraged not to smoke, Boehner said he wished he didn’t have what he called “this bad habit.”
President Barack Obama smokes on occasion, and Boehner was asked if it might be a good thing if he and Obama quit together.
Boehner’s answer to moderator Bob Schieffer: “I appreciate your suggestion.”

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 7:36pmWhy would republicans vote to put Boehner in as house speaker when he voted for tarp? Come on that makes him a Rino and not to be trusted, I’m sure there is a better candidate than him.

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 6:42pmJust once I’d like to see some dignified gentleman like Congressman Boehner respond to a question like that by simply saying, “Mr. Schieffer, why don’t you mind your own business and allow me the personal privacy and choice that every American is entitled to. Now, do you have any questions which actually MEAN something to your audience, or are you simply interested in making me, or any Republican, look bad like you’ve made a career of for the last 40 years?”
Just Once!!! Is that asking so much?

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 6:55pmJoseph, Spare the lecture. Psychiatry and Psychology are fields that have been allowed to dominate our way of life. Look at the mess they have our children in with Ritalin, ADHD, etc. Well, I have a news flash for you. Since they offer no cure per se all they have is talk and medication. With all the medication they push, they still have no idea what effect it really has on the brain or there would not be all the dangerous warnings and side effects. The brain is still an area yet to be discovered. Grab your bootstraps and quit whining and creating victims over emotions.

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 6:30pmYou know, this kind of garbage makes me sick. Smoking or not, it is legal—if the politically correct of this Country were REALLY serious, they would make smoking illegal. Heck, no they won’t, the taxes etc. make money for the government. I say, make both smoking and alcohol illegal. Then you would know they were serious and it wasn’t just a political game. Both those men have a right to smoke—it is legal so buzz off. I used to smoke but gave it up by choice.

Hey! You stop talking like that. Should Congress pay for all their sins, America would be truly bankrupt as would we; those girls and boys on Capitol Hill would use our taxpayer money to pay for their sins, and keep right on sinning.
Say, isn’t that what they are doing now?

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 6:41pmOkpulot Taha, how right you are. It seems we are the ones in the Catch-22 position. We have no way of raiding their very large pockets filled with paybacks, payoffs and inside information on upcoming contracts that they can get a jump on via investing. Sure wish there were some better answers. Seems like we always just replace them with more of the same. There are a few good congresscritters that really do care about the country, as opposed to themselves, but they are oh so rare.
And, another thing that bugs me. We donate to various candidates all over the country yet when they get to Washington they don’t want to hear from anyone outside of their own constituency (til they again want support). When they vote on a bill it affects all of us not just their constituency. Yes, they have some issues that are relevant to there specific state and they should account for that but not through earmarks. If a bill can‘t stand on its own merits it shouldn’t be made law.

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 4:26pmHow about Michelle Obama lose some weight in exchange for Barack quitting smoking?
Michelle losing weight would give her more credibility in her fight against childhood obesity.
Nine years back when Barack was a “nobody” as reported in the news recently, I am sure Barack cussed outrageous taxes on cigarettes. Today, he uses those taxes to fund social engineering.
My gripe is paying a ten bucks a bottle tax for my rodeo riding husband’s favorite to sip, whiskey.
Smoke or not, drink or not, raw sex or not, these are decisions for each individual to make. However, those taxes we pay on enjoyable vices, are not our decision to make. Those taxes are a reflection of social engineering being imposed upon us.
I think we should impose outrageous taxes on picking and flicking boogers. This would lend well to solving our economic woes, and would stop all that disgusting public booger picking.
Then there are those boys who spit on our sidewalks.
