House Refuses to Defund Libyan Operation

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — The House has turned back a Republican-led effort to cut off money for military hostilities in the Libyan war.
The vote was 238-180. It came after the House had overwhelmingly rejected a largely symbolic measure to give President Barack Obama the authority to continue U.S. involvement in the military operation against Moammar Gadhafi’s forces.
The funding measure would have barred drone attacks and airstrikes but allowed the United States to continue actions in support of NATO.
In the end, 89 Republicans defected on the largely GOP-sponsored measure. Among the Republicans voting against defunding the military action were Paul Ryan and Michele Bachmann.

Posted on June 24, 2011 at 3:10pmThis headline and article are PROOF that people don’t pay attention to the facts.
They voted it down because it DIDN’T really DEFUND the operation.
From the article: “The funding measure would have barred drone attacks and airstrikes but allowed the United States to continue actions in support of NATO.”
Good grief folks – read the facts before jumping to conclusions.

Posted on June 24, 2011 at 3:53pmWe read it. It would have defunded a chunk of it and that would be a step in the right direction. Unless there was another pending bill that would have barred all involvement (and there wasn’t), they should have voted to defund the chunk of it they the had in front of them.

Voting no, was the right vote and I applaud those members that saw thru the smoke & mirrors. What’s needed is a rock solid vote on terminating funding for use of US Military assets. Then I’d like to see a binding resolution declaring the President in violation of the War Powers Act and the Constitution.

Good for them for voting against this bill. It says that this bill is a Republican-led effort. If it is, it must be the RINO’s at work again since it may have defunded the attacks, it would have still allowed obama to stick his nose where it don’t belong. it would have just stopped Tomahawk missle strikes, Predator and Raptor drone attacks, and US Navy and Air Force action…

Posted on June 24, 2011 at 10:25pmApparently this bill would not have established zero funding for the Libya effort:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/C?c112:./temp/~c112pVHPXr
SECTION 1. LIMITATION ON USE OF DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FUNDS FOR UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES IN SUPPORT OF NATO OPERATION UNIFIED PROTECTOR WITH RESPECT TO LIBYA.
(a) Limitation- None of the funds appropriated or otherwise available to the Department of Defense may be obligated or expended for United States Armed Forces in support of North Atlantic Treaty Organization Operation Unified Protector with respect to Libya, unless otherwise specifically authorized by law.
(b) Exceptions- The limitation on funds under subsection (a) does not apply with respect to–
(1) search and rescue;
(2) intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance;
(3) aerial refueling; and
(4) operational planning.
So maybe the folks that voted against this did so because it wasn’t a “zero-funding” bill–it has 4 exceptions. Why should the taxpayers pay for this un-lawful “kinetic action” and these 4 exceptions–I feel that those who voted “no” did so because the US should not be spending one single dime in Libya–no exceptions at all!
