House Rejects Reid’s Senate Debt Ceiling Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-led House has rejected a Senate Democratic bill that would slash spending and avert a federal government default.
The vote was 246-173. It was a preemptive vote in the high-stakes political fight as the Senate still hasn’t voted on the measure from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The measure would raise the debt limit by $2.4 trillion while cutting spending by $2.2 trillion.
The vote could set the stage for negotiations on a compromise just three days before the Treasury says it will be unable to pay all the nation’s bills.
Debate on the measure was often testy and reflected the growing frustration among lawmakers. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi pleaded for an end to “this theater of the absurd” and said “it’s time for us to get real.”

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 3:54pmReid states the GOP house, tea party are obdurate, will not compromise and anti-American among other niceties. all this while he tables everything the House sends over. All Reid, Schumer et al want is that open pocketbook and any plans otherwise will upset their gluttinous piggbank and Agenda 21 focus.
Report Post »Personally I like the Connie Mack proposal, and the BBA should proceed as a defined congressional bill proposal to send to the states for ratification.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 8:49pmThe House should pass a bill that raises the debt limit enough to last until the spring and early summer of next year. There should be no strings attached. Obama would be furious and not able to use the 14th Amendment.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 9:30pmI like Connie Mack’s Penny Plan as well. It makes absolute sense and is probably the least painful but most effective plan on the Hill.
The Democrats looked desperate on the debate floor today. They were in attack mode on steroids – spewing false accusations and insults toward the TEA Party. (They all said the same thing and sounded like a broken record.) I’m proud of the TEA Party for standing their ground. They did what they promised and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.

Report Post »Unfortunately when all of the plans to date increase spending every year significantly (baseline not flat), and have all been called “draconian” by the leftists, the 1% real cuts per year which makes sense to normal people, would receive the “hatchet job of hatchet jobs” from the marxists in their characterization. Nonetheless it is that kind of framing of the argument that we need to adopt, and I like the plan as well, although I prefer the automatic balanced budget via no debt ceiling increase.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 11:32pmcharliego, you get extra point for using the words, “obdurate” and “gluttinous” and “et al.” You sound cerebral but if you would eschew obfuscation you’d get more. You lose points for your arcane reference to “Agenda 21.“ Is that like ”Area 51?” Is Agenda 21 an alien agenda? What the heck was wrong with Agenda 20? Are you advocating World domination by aliens?

Thats if we pull out of the Middle East and when… And the balance to be determined by an appointed commission with no deadlines to achieve this goal and no punishment if they dont do their job . And this issue will not be addressed again till after the election , Thats Progressive Democrat legislation , for the people…

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 10:27pmLet’s be honest…
Report Post »If we consider our federal budget like a household budget, then we must factor in the continuing spending on forces in the Middle East. These are expenses that are above and beyond our own domestic spending. Over a trillion on this has not been reckoned on our books. If you are honest with yourself and your “pay as you go” mentality, you should have been for ways to raise revenue for these ventures. I remember that time and foolishly thought it would just get paid for somehow. The fact of the matter is, these actions have been put on the “credit card,” and we are only paying the minimum payment.
The dilemma here is how to raise revenue. If we raise revenue by raising taxes, we cannot trust the Democrats (and a few Republicans) to leave that money alone. Frankly, any idea to raise revenue that goes to pay for our debt cannot be entrusted to our corrupt politicians who will take any opportunity to raise even more revenue or hijack the revenue purposed to the debt for fabricated “crises.”
I imagine that unless the electorate becomes more educated and less sheeplike, bleating the talking points of their politicians, this system will break down slowly over time, which is much worse than a system breaking down completely in a short amount of time. A system will try to self correct itself as it breaks down slowly, swinging madly back and forth as parts break down and collapse.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 3:48pmWhy is the Tea Party even supporting Republican or Democrat lines? I think the best that can happen for the Tea Party is to form a complete base on America’s founding especially on the US Constitution (which it already is), but not affiliate with a political party.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 3:38pmIt took two hundred twelve years for the debt to reach seven trillion dollars in two thousand three. Since the Deomcrats were voted into government and took control of Congress in two thousand four and the entire government in two thousand eight they have raised the debt to the present level of fourteen trillion dollars. In the space of six years they have added as much debt as all the other congresses and administrations in two hundred and twelve years.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 3:38pmQuoting Nancy Pelosi? She’s as responsible for this current debt and entitlement crisis as anyone. Democrats only have one agenda, and they blame Republicans for everything Progressive Democrats have done to America. What she says in irrelevant. It’s not based on reality. What Harry Reid is irrelevant. It’s not based on reality. What Barrack Obama says is irrelevent. It’s not based on reality.
Dems ignored the first House Budget. They killed Cut, Cap & Balance without debate. They are petrified of the American people seeing what’s in any bill. They don’t want their bills read, and certainly not GOP bills that might actually have overwhelming American support.
Instead, they’ve dumbed down a dependency class that support more giveaways, higher taxes on 1/2 the nation to fund the giveaways, and have turned them into government handout addicts. The Democrat Party is nothing any different that a drug pusher now. Buying loyalty by taking what 1/2 the nation earns and giving it away to the other 1/2.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 3:46pmFYI…this is really not about “cutting spending” …it is all about reducing the amount we are going to OVERSPEND. These numbers (1.4 trillion, 2.2 trillion) come off of the additional NINE TRILLION Obama wants to use above and beyond the last budget.
So, if you made 20K last year and spent 30K…you are in debt.
So, this year you will still make 20K, but figure you will actually need to spend 35K…but then you decide to “cut your spending” and will only need 33K.
Did you actually do anything? Other than shove the 2X4 up your tush a little less far than last year?
