How Did Tim Tebow Respond to Critic Telling Him to Tone Down Jesus Talk?

Tim Tebow has truly become a phenomenon as the popular, but unconventional, NFL quarterback continues to find himself at the center of discussions about sports, religion and politics. Tebow’s play for the Denver Broncos has drawn polarizing opinions from football analysts. Additionally, there has also been a great deal of criticism over Tebow’s Christian views.
ESPN analyst Skip Bayless, an equally polarizing figure among football fans, often supports Tebow and spoke with him on ESPN Tuesday. As the phone interview progressed, Bayless asked Tebow if he was aware of recent comments made by former Bronco quaterback Jake Plummer.
Plummer told a Phoenix radio station yesterday that he respects Tebow’s play, but said of the young quarterback’s religious beliefs:
“I think that when he accepts the fact that we know that he loves Jesus Christ, then I think I’ll like him a little better. I don’t hate him because of that, I just would rather not have to hear that every single time he takes a good snap or makes a good handoff.”
When asked by Bayless Tuesday what he would say about those comments if he had the opportunity to speak with Plummer, Tebow responded:
“Well, first I’d say, thank you for the compliment of calling me a winner and then I‘d also say if you’re married and you’re a [husband] is it good enough to only say you love her on the day you get married or should you tell her every single day when you wake up and have an opportunity?
And that’s how I feel about my relationship with Jesus Christ. It is the most important thing in my life so anytime I get an opportunity to tell Him that I love Him or give Him an opportunity to shout Him out on national TV, I’m gonna take that opportunity. So I look at that as a relationship that I have with Him that I want to give Him honor and glory anytime I have the opportunity and then right after I give Him honor and glory, then I want to try and give my teammates honor and glory and that’s how it works because Christ comes first in my life. Then my family, and then my teammates.
So I respect Jake’s opinion and I really appreciate his compliment of calling me a winner but I feel like anytime I get the opportunity to give the Lord some praise, He is due for it because of what He did for me and what he did for us on the cross for all of us. “
Tebow went on to say that his relationship with God not only influences his play on the field, but makes him who he is as a person:
“I want to be a great role model and be what Danny Wuerffel was to me and I want to be someone who makes difference. Because at the end of the day if all we’re doing is winning and losing football games and scoring touchdowns, then we really haven’t done a lot in our lives.
But if we’re in the business of encouraging people, bring faith, hope and love to those on their darkest hour of need as the mission statement of my foundation reads, then we’re really doing something successful with our lives. So I’m going to take the platform that football has given me and try to give back, make a difference and make this world a better place.”
While his character is undeniable, many are not yet sold on Tebow’s abilities as an NFL quarterback — even in light of his 4-1 record this year as a starter. Tebow is arguably one the greatest college football players of all time, having won two National Championships and the Heisman Trophy at the University of Florida.

referees, go into the crowds and attack the fans. I think they need some
one with morals and virtues. The whole sports industry is confused because
they have never seen anyone do the things he does unless they are getting

Hate him or love him you have to admit, you’d want YOUR kid looking up to him as a role model.
Tim understands this key concept:
Money is NOT evil, the LOVE OF money is.
Football is NOT evil, the LOVE OF football is.
So many man-children forget this key concept, and become obsessed with the game. No wonder we are doomed as a society…

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 6:29amBeing a Gator fan, we have watched Tim faithfullysince he first stepped foot on the field. I wonder where these ‘critics’ have been for the past 7 years? This is vintage Tebow and he isn’t, nor does he have, to change to satisfy his critics (who have the right to make these comments, but just look totally ignorant when they do). If you have children or grandchildren who aspire to be athletes, I suggest Tim’s book as a Christmas present (or for any reason), and quickly read it first. It is inspirational and a quick read. Why do all you people complain about Christians ‘pushing their beliefs’ on everyone? I see here, that you yourself are pushing your ‘evolution darwinism’ crap. Don’t be a pusher. As I‘m sure you’re aware, this is more a conservative news source, in which case, in faith related articles here, there will be approximately 95% approving comments. Take your trash elsewhere. Posted on November 23, 2011 at 8:59amWhile reading about Tim Tebow, these lyrics comes to mind:
“… The voices of a million angels
Cannot express my gratitude
All that I am or ever hope to be
I owe it all to Thee …
… Just let me live my life
And let it be pleasing, Lord to Thee
And should I gain any praise,
Let it go to Calvary.
With His blood, He has saved me
By His power, He has raised me
To God be the glory
For the things He has done.”

As far as his actions he should keep his personal relationship personal and focus on football. He is no Michael Vick in terms of talent and his unconventional approach will quickly shine a light on his lack of NFL quarterback skills.

Jesus loves you too. Have a better day today, you must be so frustrated with your life, to come on here and denigrate Our Lord and Savior. Be careful Christians and pay close attention to the signs. It’s not Jews peple are mobilizing to hate, it’s all people obedient to God. This is the prime example. Plummer could have pointed out several former and current Broncos that annoy him because of alcohol abuse, spouse abuse, steroid abuse, or drug abuse; instead he goes after Tebow for God abuse.
Fact is Jake the Plummeter couldn’t win in Denver with a much better supporting cast, and here comes Tebow winning and grinning…this is just Plummer blaming and attacking God for his own ineptitudes. Hey Jake, learn some humility and maybe things will start working out better for you.

On a side note, I find it entertaining when atheist accuse Christians of lacking intelligence simply because they do not understand the spiritual realm. Instead they solely rely on the physical realm to justify to themselves not believing in the unseen. I understand both realms and the influence it has on who I am and how I live my life. In a sense, it’s like having two sets of eyes. I can see the ceiling while looking directly at the floor. It does not mean I am more or less intelligent than anyone, it simply means I have an understanding of something that atheists do not. This understanding allows me to live bravely and boldly. I haven’t seen that in a LONG time. I would guess that there are still those players who do that…but maybe the networks just aren’t showing it anymore? I mean, we can’t be showing football players on national t.v….. PRAYING! Whether or not Tebow is much of a quarterback is irrelevant. He most definitely IS a man…and a man of God. I think it’s our time as Christians to stop letting everyone tell us “you can’t” when we pray or speak of God in public, because it might “offend” someone. What about offending us and taking away our constitutional right to choose our religion and celebrate it as we need and want. It’s not like Tebow is craming it down anyones throat, just giving God the honor and glory He deserves. I am glad to see that he isn’t letting anyone “make” him stop. Such religiosity, almost becomes a pathology when a significant portion of a person or group’s, moment to moment thinking, is distracted by the ethereal. Furthermore, such religiosity is a vestige of religious history that has been the cause of much misery.
While most of Christendom has weathered the 2000 year storm that was the birth of that religion, thus to be accommodating to members of other sects and religions, without the former attendant bias. There are still various sects that while seeming to be open and welcoming, contain all the portions of a formula for religious holocaust?
Islam, is 600 years younger than Christianity, and shows that age difference every day in the dogmatic practice of the day to day activities, peculiar to that religion. Moreover, when that 600 year chasm spills over into our modern world, grotesque conflict, frequently results.
In conclusion, Mr. Tebow and others like him are convinced of their righteousness, therefore, its up to fans to do it Tebow’s way, because, Mr. Tebow, knows what good and right for everyone. Chilling isn’t it?

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 2:31pmAS we who believe know, our battle is not against flesh and blood. What I find most interesting is the level of opposition to Tim Tebow. Frankly, he is assaulting one of the very foundations of worship in America – the worship of sport and personal performance. His pay and visibility is based on his ability to achieve those goals, but by deflecting the glory off of himself to God, he is confronting a huge force in the spiritual realm (I know, I know, some of you will begin to say there is no spirit realm; please move on as it is beyond your comprehension). The energy of forces trying to array themselves against him is the same ones that have kept many Christians from realizing their positions of authority in all roles of society.
We are to be as gentle as lambs and as wise as serpents, but that does not negate the spiritual power and authority we are to exercise in the culture we live in. RISE UP and TAKE THIS LAND; confront the powers of darkness spiritually destroying this country like Tebow is doing, whatever your vocation is. You have the truth; the enemy of God is not flesh and blood, and that enemy wants you to SHUT UP because knows you have the answers for society’s problems, which are spiritual in nature at their root..
Remember, the bigger the opposition, the bigger the success you are capable of attaining in the power of Christ’s resurrection. Those stadiums were NOT built for football; they were built for revival…

Posted on November 22, 2011 at 7:38pmJeez…. I do recall something about having the freedom to worship how we saw fit in this country. Do you have a problem with that?
I suppose though, you could amend the constitution to make it illegal but, here’s a tip. Make sure you get rid of the 2nd amendment first. You’ll need to have that changed if you are really serious about telling us when and where to worship.
Have a blessed day!!! God loves you and so do I!

Posted on November 22, 2011 at 7:54pmI bet your a pretty dim guy. I‘m sure you don’t even realize the irony and hypocrisy of your statement. You are telling a group of people that you dislike when you feel they are pushing their views on you by trying to push your views on them, or you wouldn’t be writing this on a GB website. You must be pretty insecure and/or have a low self esteem or someones beliefs would not be so threatening to you. Plus, I think I have heard most of what Tebow has said, and I have never heard him tell anybody to believe anything, only what he believes (which, again, is what your are doing). Anyway, I really do feel bad for you because I’m sure your life has been difficult. I’ll bet some therapy would do you wonders.

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 1:08amI watched Tebow at Florida and he was a great quarterback. Now that he is with the Broncos, he is going to do very well there to. If he is able to last as long as Elway then he will beat all his reconds. However, if I had to listen the word of god over and over again and over again everyday, I would ask to be traded. I don’t have a problem with anyone worshipping their god, just don’t do it around me.

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 1:43amNo, I do not. Do YOU realize how much distilled HATRED you exhibit toward those who have a compelling desire to tell others that LOVE is always the wisest choice? Why do you become so hostile and bitter if someone tells you about Jesus Christ? But here’s where people like you become the serious problem: you tell someone to STOPtelling everyone about Jesus because it offends you: So everyone stopped having to make decisions because YOU think for everyone else now? So good to know! I’ve been thinking for myself all day-from now on, thought nazis, alert me next time we experience changing of the guard.

Well I guess since we are still a free country (for now anyway) we get to say and do what we want in public or anywhere else whether it annoys you or not. Also, food for thought, why does it bother you so much to talk about one man? You might want to think about why the hatred for Christ “being shoved down your throat” bothers you soooo much. If you don’t like what is being said you also have the freedom to walk away, turn the channel, argue with the person, or any other means of “NOT” hearing it. Grow up and get over yourself. We don’t have to hide our faith behind closed door or in settings that meet your approval just because it might offend your “sissy-fied” little emotions. TOO BAD FOR YOU.

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 8:13amWould you say that to a muslim? That wouldn’t be very PC. You wouldn’t be part of the progressive group anymore. Tim is a good man. I support him.
Report Post »skibum415
Posted on November 23, 2011 at 8:38amI would only ask why? Why is it acceptable for atheists, Muslims, etc. to talk about their faith in public and if anyone has an opposing view that person isn’t depicted in the media as just that, having an opposing view, instead claiming he or she is one who is intolerant or perhaps Islamaphobic?
Ever since Progressives sunk their teeth into the nation over the course of the twentieth century they have been trying to destroy anything traditional in favor of more progressive nation. Often this leads to things like Christmas break being turned into holiday break, only to be further broken down into simply, winter break.
@Bernbart, you as a person, have the right to change the channel, read another story, or do something else. You don‘t have to let Tim Tebow’s PERSONAL faith hurt or offend you in any way, shape, or form. Likewise, if you have a faith (or don’t) as long as your faith doesn’t physically or emotionally harm others (think 9/11 or the recent lone wolf Muslim man arrested after being caught making pipe bombs on surveillance) then you have every right in the world, especially in the United States of America to profess your faith.
If I don‘t care for what you are saying I’ll simply turn the channel or walk away. No need to be upset or offended, as there are major issues in the world to be upset and offended about; issues we cannot simply change the channel or walk away.
Regards,

Posted on November 23, 2011 at 9:38amThe really funny thing is…he’s not trying to minister to anyone but himself. He is practising his faith, he is not preaching to anyone or trying to forse anyone to listen. It s everyone blasting him that forces him to respond. If you do not believe in God, then you are also relying on nothing more or less than FAITH. Only you have faith that God is not real. I prefer to believe that he is. The truth is if he were a Muslim, or a Homosexual, or advocated abortion, he would be hailed as a hero, but, because he advocates love, live, forgiveness, and doesn’t apologize for his core beliefs, you people just hammer him. He isn’t forcing you to be a believer, he is forcing you to be tolerant.
