How Do Medical Professionals Feel About the Supreme Court’s Health Care Decision?

The American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, among others, have voiced their support for the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the Affordable Care Act, but not all doctors, health care professionals and medical companies are in favor for it — or think they are going to benefit from it.
(Related: See other The Blaze coverage of Obamacare and the Supreme Court ruling)
CBS Local in New York shares one of these dissenting positions:
Dr. Alieta Eck, M.D. is the President of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons. She has a practice in Piscataway.
“Doctors are going to be retiring. I’m not sure who’s gonna fill in the gaps,” said Dr. Eck. “There’s just not enough of us to fulfill this infinite demand for medical services.”
Dr. Eck adds that under Obama’s plan, many payouts will go down – and many practices will go under.
“We don’t have to go back to the way it is now,” Dr. Eck said. “It’s actually way too expensive for taxpayers the way it is now, but ‘Obamacare’ will actually be worse.”
Fox News reports Dr. Manny Alvarez saying that the Supreme Court’s decision doesn’t really affect health care reform as a whole in the first place. He writes that costs for medical treatment will continue to rise and inefficient treatment will result:
Let’s face it – federal health care regulations are like playing in Las Vegas. The house will always win. Most federal surveys about quality and patient satisfaction are designed to think that the patient has a voice in improving quality, but rather the results are calculated to cut costs, always against the back of physicians and hospitals and that will ultimately weaken the system and disenfranchise health care workers.
Kathryn Serkes, chairman of the Doctor Patient Medical Association (DPMA) took a similar stance as Alvarez on this one. In a statement issued to the Sacramento Bee she said, “Doctors on the frontlines clearly understand what Washington does not. Government-mandated ‘coverage’ is not the same thing as actual medical care.”
DPMA goes on to also note that 49 percent of doctors said they would stop accepting Medicaide patients with the passed Affordable Care Act.
“I want to focus on what is best for my patients and not what a government official deems cost effective…I would be willing to do charity care weekly for the poor and underinsured,” a family practitioner in Washington state wrote.
Still there are many who are in favor. The AMA has long supported the health care bill and widespread insurance coverage. In a statement about the Supreme Court’s decision, the AMA said that the health care reform law that has now been upheld by the high court will simplify administrative burdens, “including streamlining insurance claims, so physicians and their staff can spend more time with patients and less time on paperwork.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a statement saying the ruling indicates an investment in “children’s health.”
“Today is one for the history books,” said AAP President Dr. Robert Block in a statement. “As pediatricians, our number one goal is to keep children healthy, and we can now do so knowing that a landmark law prioritizes children’s health needs and provides them with the access to care, age-appropriate benefits and coverage options they need and deserve.”
As for how the law will affect drug and biotech companies, the Associated Press reported Les Funtleyder, health care fund manager at Poliwogg, a private equity fund for small investors, saying they may receive more business with an increasing customer base in 2014. This is because patients needing the most expensive drugs, for cancer and rare disorders, aren’t going without now – generally are getting them through government or industry patient assistance programs.
Medical device makers, on the other hand, will have to start paying a 2.3 percent tax beginning in January on their sales of devices such as pacemakers and CT scan machines imposed under the overhaul law.
One trade group for the industry, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association, said that Congress and the president must repeal the tax, arguing it would make it harder for companies to develop innovative new devices.
“It is clear that this misguided policy has already led to job losses and cuts to research and development,” Mark Leahey, the group’s president, said in a statement.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 10:21pmIt is just what the administration wants people to die and cut the population. Why else would they want to mandate something that starves people to death who can’t open a carton of milk. 130,000 people a year in europe under the same health care they just forced the middle class to pay for.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 10:19am“DPMA goes on to also note that 49 percent of doctors said they would stop accepting Medicaide patients with the passed Affordable Care Act.” Shouldn’t be a problem, just tie Medicare and Medicaid participation together and you’ll see very few physicians leave. The provider arguments here are laughable as they try and get the best of both worlds. They want payment rates to remain artificially high to cover the uninsured, even after the uninsured pool shrinks dramatically and such subsidization is no longer necessary. No doubt one of the likely and necessary results will be that the average physician income will go down a bit. For those here who always argue that teachers are overpaid, not sure how you will defend physician incomes continuing to go up faster than the rest of the workforce.

I would rather have my medicare tax refuned to me in a lump sum. I have paying into this boondoggle since it was created. Before Medicare, I could get a sports physical for $2.00 (1963). Our family doctor did house calls for free. He stiched up a a complex fracture to my right little finger and set it in his office for $10.00.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 9:10pmDoctors get ready for this – OUTSOURCING. Your analysis and examination skills will be outsourced to far away places. Patients will go to ‘Medical scanning booths’ where they will hook themselves up with somewhat fool proof electrodes for ECG, Temp, Steth., etc.. A remote doctor will instruct them to palpate various places on their body and report if they feel it soft, hard, a mass, etc. Then in these private auto-sanitizing booths, they can disrobe and be scanned by high-res cameras for lesions, moles, etc. Get the picture? Blood drawn will be tested in the booth along with other excretions if so ordered. The only local US medical jobs will be surgery and that will ultimately be replaced by surgical robots, which as you know already exist (prostate for example?).. So say goodbye to those big dollar salaries and lifestyles.. Medical colleges? Down the drain. Why in hell would someone spend up to 8 more years after college and several hundred thousand dollars for a job that pays the same as a GM factory assembler? Watch my space for more on this subject. You are all SCREWED.

Nice job, Obama. You have single-handedly destroyed the backbone of America. We will ALL have to submit to the federal government now.
But you had better watch out – when we stop paying taxes entirely, the government collapses, and your currency collapses, and we will once again be a free people.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 9:17pmEactly! My doctor told a friend who had an appointment that as of September he would be a concierge doctor. The cost will be $1650 a year per adult. He said that obamacare would require him to see 35-40 patients a day, and that there is no way he could give each patient the time he/she deserved under those conditions – and the paperwork will be horrendous. So my husband and I and most of our doctor’s patients will be looking for for a new doctor. I have several friends whose doctors have told them exactly the same thing or whose doctors have told them they would retire if Obamacare was upheld. There is going to be a horrendous doctor shortage for many more patients. Health care will suffer horribly – except for the rich.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 8:46pmOf COURSE the AMA is going to support it – it is their job to get as much money for doctors as possible, and with 30 million new patients all clamoring for their constituent’s care, the hourly wage of a doctor is going to go through the roof.
Americans are being raped by their health care system now. It is so easy to see how we are being taken advantage of. First, excessive regulation makes it hard to be a doctor and makes it hard to market a new drug. Prices go up. Then insurance steps in and removes the patient doctor relationship, which includes haggling over price. Prices go up. Then Medicare, Medicade, and a slew of other “free” government programs enter the fray and bring more patients (with the same number of doctors) and the prices go up. Not only that, but insurance and the government has negotiated special deals for their patients, so that doctors have to artificially inflate their quoted rates even further. One doctor has 6 back office people negotiating with insurance comanies just to get them to pay for the procedures that they do cover. Higher costs. NOW, government has ORDERED all americans to buy healthcare insurance – the price of insurance is going to go WAY up, the price of a doctor visit is going to go WAY up. It is EASY to see – they are going to get every dime that you had, and they are going to take your house, car and everything you own, including your kid’s college education. And if you don’t like it, you can hire a lawyer for $500/hr, and LOS

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 8:45pmThe AMA only represents 17% of physicians. Why? Because their progressive agenda is not shared by the majority of practicing physicians, who dropped their AMA membership years ago. Unfortunately, it is the “go-to“ source for lazy journalists who need a statement from the ”medical establishment”, much like Al Sharpton “represents” the black community. The AAP has been on a socialized medicine tirade since the 1980s. Check out docs4patientcare.org for a more traditional patient-centered view.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 8:07pmNPI. National Provider ID number. This is the death knell of private health care. How? My medical license has been federalized. When I call in prescriptions now, it’s no longer enough that I have a state license, a state controlled dangerous substance license, a DEA number, but I have to provide my NPI. This is a short step away from making participation in federal programs (amerigroup care, medicare) mandatory, or no lNPI, no license. I’ve tried running a concierge medical care service for five years and have run into billing nightmares and entitlement attitudes among my patients and the competition coming from urgent care businesses who will not only accept all insurance but drool at the prospect of taking on all single-party payer government “insurance” has killed my business model, the antique “pay as you go.” My board certification runs out in three years and after 25 years of practice, I may be retiring. Hell, I’m a disabled vet, I might go that route, why work harder for less money when I can just suckle at the public teat like my patients?
