How Do You Line Up? Survey Reveals Most Popular Cars Among Democrats and Republicans

Strategic Vision, a marketing research and industry forecasting firm, recently conducted a large-scale survey to determine the most popular cars among Republicans and Democrats, respectively. While the results aren’t too surprising, they’ve given statistical proof to what many have often assumed.
After interviewing more than 38,000 people, the study found that the most popular car among Republicans is the Ford Mustang convertible, followed by the Audi A8 sedan, the Mercedes GL-Class, the Ford Expedition, and the Ford F-150.
For Democrats, favorites included the Honda Civic Hybrid, the Volvo C30, the Nissan Leaf, the Acura TSX Sport Wagon, and the Ford Fiesta.
Ford Motor’s communication director was pleased with the results of the study. ”We’re happy to serve the red and blue states,” he said. “We offer the power of choice to drivers and customers of every political stripe.”
The New York Times writes:
The survey, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent, included retail sales of 2011 and 2012 model-year cars and trucks. The study did not control for demographics like age or income. The news release from Strategic Vision also did not break down sales by geographic location.
[...]
Christopher Chaney, vice president of Strategic Vision, said certain cultural outlooks associated with party affiliations could carry over into car purchasing. For example, Republicans accounted for 69 percent of convertible purchases, compared with 17 percent for Democrats. “In the case of convertibles, we feel that there’s a freedom aspect, and that these buyers are looking to reward themselves, a mindset more associated with Republicans,” Mr. Chaney said.
Ultimately, Mr. Chaney and Mr. Edwards want automakers to consider using their survey data to bolster sales. “The idea is, ‘How do I formulate commercials and messages so that Republicans can be interested in hybrids, and Democrats in convertibles?’” Mr. Chaney said. “Instead of stereotyping people, we should look at these things as opportunities to understand the opposite. Because people are ultimately more alike than different.”
While not topping out the list, President Obama’s most recent personal cars were a Ford Escape Hybrid and Chrysler 300C sedan.

Modern cars? Dunno. When the Honda CRX was in its heyday I used to love it. Basically anything that hugs the road, goes really fast, and has a manual transmission. Style points are always nice as well (interior leather, a billion gauges instead of an idiot light, etc).

Posted on April 2, 2012 at 3:02pmAm conservative and I drive a Prius. I get 55 mpg average. Saving money on gas and generating my own power as I drive is a pretty conservative idea. My only regret: as I see people drive by in their gas guzzlers, I know someday somehow the government will take money from me that I have saved by being smart, and give it to people who can not afford gas or some other expense, because of their own poor choices.
Report Post »B_rad
Posted on April 2, 2012 at 3:49pm@Senorgato, I have nothing against hybrids, I think they’re a pretty good idea. The Prius is a remarkable achievement, as is the Volt. However, when you consider the extra money it takes to buy a hybrid such as the Prius, compared to a comparable sized and equipped gas or diesel car, you don‘t start saving money until you’ve owned it for over 5 years, minimum (on average of course). Hybrids are getting better, and as the tech is amortized over more products, the price is coming down. But at this point, it takes an awful lot of driving to make up for the initial cost. If this country was serious about pushing high mileage cars and reducing our dependance on foreign oil, we would be pushing diesel in a big way. But everything they do reduces our ability to benefit from diesel. Diesel fuel should be cheaper than regular, it isn’t. Regulations are hampering the further development and improvement of diesels here. The MPG achieved by VW, BMW, and Mercedes diesels is on par or better than can be expected with the best hybrids. Don’t believe me? Compare your Prius to a Jetta diesel. The problem is, Prius owners wouldn’t get the satisfaction of glowering at the rest of us if they were in a Jetta.
I’m glad you like your Prius, but when you look down your nose at those of us spending sooooo much more on gas, remember that you paid up front. You’ll save, in the long run, if you keep the car long enough. Most people don’t.

My GMC Sierra Denali HD is a diesel and a flex fuel unite that can run on Natural gas, Vegetable oil hell even used motor oil if I have to. Banks installed the natural gas option for me and I recently added the vegetable oil tank and heater.
The same is true of the CTSV, it can run on premium gas or E85 and I’ve already run it on Menthol Alcohol. It actually runs better and cooler on Alcohol but the range is much less.

How many Crown Vics were driven by local/state law enforcement and govt officials, in the 80‘s and90’s. Posted on April 1, 2012 at 10:36pm*Sigh* It really gets old how many people just skim the surface of any issue and then make comments about how one thing is good, the other bad. Ford had it’s hand out right next to the guys from GM and Chrysler. Remember??? Helllo? It was only when Ford saw the massive strings attached that they said no. Ford was lucky because they were in far worse shape years earlier. Why is that lucky? Because they were in such bad shape they sold off most of their foreign brands before the bottom fell out. Because of that, they had a tremendous amount of cash on the books that enabled them to secure loans independent of the govt. But they knew that going in and they still had their hand out. I appreciate Ford’s turn-around, even though I grew up a GM fan. Just don’t give them a pass for “practicing capitalism”. They would have been just as guilty if they hadn’t seen the writing on the Obama wall and found another way. GM was in better shape than Ford and would have been fine if the market hadn’t tanked.
I’m no fan of the bailouts, but to place all the blame on the automakers is wrong. They asked for low cost govt loans and instead got taken over. It was our govt that was running the show and they designed the whole mess so the unions came out smelling like a rose while the non-union dealers, stock- and bond holders got hosed. Sadly, I won’t buy another new GM until the govt is the hell out of their business. I sincerely hope that happens. Until then, I’ll only buy used.
Report Post »GhostOfJefferson
Posted on April 2, 2012 at 7:47amBy your logic, any sale is a “subsidy”. If government buys cars at market price, that’s not a subsidy, that’s a customer paying for a product. It’s a subsidy when government swoops in and pumps billions of dollars into the pocket of unions/failed auto companies, and take partial or full ownership. Hope that clears things up for you.

Posted on April 1, 2012 at 6:20pmvolvo is the only car I have ever owned. I am an american truck kind of gal but have had my volvo for 19 years and I have to say for a car it is quite impressive everything is still working and it has almost 300,000 miles on it. nothing beats my F350 but that volvo I will never part with it was my college commuter. I drive it in the summer for grocery store etc because of the super cheap gas…it is no good for hauling hay or hunting dogs though

I.E. How do we get people to want to buy something they don’t want. Gotta be one of the dumbest comments today. If Honda wants to sell to Repubicans, they need to make a pickup.

Posted on April 1, 2012 at 7:11pmEver heard of the Ridgeline??? I will never own an American car as the quality and resale value are crap. I own a 2012 Honda Accord EX-L w/navigation system. My previous car was 2006 Honda Accord EX-L w/navigation which was totaled by a low life dumbocrap w/bare minimum insurance. Lucky for me I have great insurance, they gave me $15,477 for the car and used the $15k to buy the new one. My wife has a 2003 Honda CRV and we are both republicans. America hasn‘t made a quality car since the 60’s….another industry destroyed by the unions….

Posted on April 1, 2012 at 7:59pmYou have to be kidding! A ridgeline is no pickup. What a joke. Anyone who actually needs a truck would never by that thing. Ford F series all the way. I’ve owned three over 20 years. I hate unions but there’s a reason the f-150 is the best selling truck in the world for decades. Seven years ago I bought a 95 F150 for $4500 it had 70k miles on it. Now it has 180k miles, it still runs the ac blows cold I hardly ever change the oil and I’ve spent about $2500 on repairs. It’s made me hundreds of thousands as a construction truck. Hauling and towing everyday. No Honda ever ran better than that.

Reminds me of Europe & the streets filled with scooters & little cars buzzing around….Hummm. In ‘98 when visiting GB, the price of a gallon then in that country was $5.00 a gallon.

It‘s an ’old’ article — but very relevant — Big Corps (to include GE, et al) – don‘t have to ’play buy the rules’ THEIR lobbyists bought and paid for.{they’re corporations and can do what they want – once they get the Mother Corp to ‘legislate it’} Although ‘boycotts’ seem nefarious in many instances, the PEOPLE’s only remaining recourse is the vote with their DOLLAR. ‘Shop Smart.’ — Comes down to what the INDIVIDUAL deems of moral value (lacking for most) for the greater good for their COUNTRY – get the Big picture…. Corp USA has intentionally decided to erode its tax base (mfg=tax-outsourcing of that BIG piece of pie = lost revenue in THAT venue of the money cycle) – American ‘Idle.’ — Perhaps there is an opportunity here MOST refuse to see… (re-read the TREATY of 1783 to discover who is the ‘boss’ – and paying RENT for the original charters granted by King George :-) ) — It’s all there…..

Posted on April 3, 2012 at 9:48amExactly. I’m as right-wing, conservative, and constitution-loving as anyone, and my last three cars were a ‘70 BMW 2002, a ‘90 Honda Accord 4-dr, and a ‘07 Kia Rondo. Pickup trucks are fine if you really need one, but as general purpose transportation, they suck. When I was young I had coupes, convertibles, and even a ‘63 Stingray rag top, but since I‘ve grown up I’ve managed to keep a car for 17 to 20 years by religiously doing the required servicing. I love my new Rondo, but I’ve hit my head so many times on the too-low rear hatch cover that sometimes I want to shoot that thing and go buy a new Ford Transit wagon – check it out, this is an incredibly functional small vehicle with a VERY tall roof and humongous all-around glass: http://www.thecarconnection.com/photos/ford_transit-connect-wagon_2011#100331420 I just wish they offered it here in a hybrid or even a diesel like they do in every other country but here, of course.

Now I am in my 30′s with a precious baby girl – so my priorities have changed but one day I hope to have another!! When she gets old enough to get in and out by herself so she can climb into that tiny back seat – then we may get one but then I won’t be able to go fast (except from 0-60) so I prob. won’t get one until I am 50…..then I would be one of those “older” ladies trying to catch 3rd in the GT and that would look kinda silly :)
