How Does Hamas Manipulate Casualty Numbers?

As Hamas tries to leverage the unintentional deaths of three Egyptian police officers resulting from an Israeli response to last week’s terrorist attack near Eilat, the Blaze is taking a look at how Hamas uses casualty figures- real and imagined- to justify its continued campaign of terror against Israel.How Does Hamas Manipulate Casualty Numbers?

Casualty assessments have always played a prominent role in media coverage of conflicts between Israel and Hamas. Global media outlets tend to play favorites with which sources they trust for accurate casualty information. And history shows a clear bias in many international organization and NGO’s to accept Hamas casualty figures without verification (or even basic skepticism).

The U.N. in particular has a long-established tendency, as evidenced by the release of the infamous Goldstone Report, to overstate the number of non-combatant Palestinian casualties, without adequate fact-checking. Since the release of the Goldstone Report, its namesake author has penned an op-ed apologizing for the flawed report. But the mentality that spawned the report was pervasive. As one NGO researcher wrote in a February Jerusalem Post article about the role of NGOs in Gaza War casualty assessments:

“NGOs issued dozens of publications purporting to document the number of Palestinian civilian casualties. They frequently compared those figures to the number of Israeli casualties, which were lower. To pursue their political objectives, NGOs often deliberately and grossly inflated the Palestinian count, mislabeling combatants as civilians or “children,” and made other false accusations.”

How Does Hamas Manipulate Casualty Numbers?Hamas does not just inflate casualty numbers to the media- it manipulates casualty reports for very specific ends. In the past, Hamas has made false claims to show a high proportion of civilians killed, but also to present a low percentage of fighters lost in action. This has been intended to demonize the Israelis for wanton collateral damage while allowing Hamas fighters to look formidable.

In a tried and true propaganda tactic for asymmetrical conflicts around the world, Hamas also has claimed fighters killed in action as civilians, used human shields, or placed known Hamas militants in the ‘civilian’ category because they were killed without a weapon or while not actively engaged in combat.

In the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead, the IDF name for what is called “the Gaza War” of 2009, Hamas initially claimed that of 1,300 casualties, only 48 were fighters in the terrorist organization.

Afterwards, it became clear the number of fighters killed was much higher, partially because Hamas declared police officers who were members of Hamas to be non-combatants. In the end, it emerged that of the 1200 Palestinians killed in the operation, more than 700 were fighters. How Does Hamas Manipulate Casualty Numbers?

Hamas attempted to portray the action as a targeted massacre of Palestinian civilians, and did so in order to fan the flames of hatred for Israel and bolster world sympathy for Hamas.

Any discussion of civilian casualties is inherently a solemn matter. In the civilized world, casualties are the weightiest public concern for any leadership. Israel keeps track of casualties during its operations and gives an honest accounting afterwards. The IDF also goes to great lengths to limit and avoid civilian casualties whenever possible.

Hamas, however, shows no such deference when it comes to discussing casualties. It not only inflates the number of non-combatant Palestinians killed to cast Israel as a villain, it denies any sympathy for Israeli victims, past or present.

Hamas openly praises suicide bombings which are specifically meant to maim and kill innocent men women and children. These casualties are not an undesired outcome- they are the sole motivating factor for the horrific attacks. It is the clearest evidence of the vast moral separation between Israeli and Hamas actions.

For Hamas, even historical casualties are manipulated for propaganda purposes. Hamas openly and continually has tried to deny, belittle, or brush off the 6 million Jewish deaths in the Holocaust.

Last January, senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar gave a window into the soul of his organization and accused Israel of carrying out “countless holocausts” against the Palestinians while saying the Nazi genocide against the Jewish people was a “lie.”

And when Hamas‘s false numbers aren’t enough, Hamas and other militant groups turn to outright fakery.

    Did you ever consider the lower death totals and new plaque were because of a fascist sympathyer attempting to re write history? Even today there are those who insist there never was a holocaust. After the war there still were many nazi lovers who could have reposted the plaques. However, it isn’t the total deaths but the fact that a people would attempt to destroy another people. This is no change of what has occurred repeatedly throughout history in most sections of the world. The only difference between 1930s Germany and today is that we know what will occur if the Arabs over run Israel. It’s a shame when someone who has lived their entire lives fearing only a single bully in school and not understanding the fear of an entire population of millions of bullies who would laughingly cut the throats of your whole family. I don’t believe what many good honest Christians believe that our fate goes on earthly Israel!!! Is it not deceitful pretending to be OT Jews? See based on what some these Christians believe if true, God doesn’t curse those who curse Khazars!!! Palestinians have many Christians among them and Israeli blood!!! What a switcharoo!!!     The truth is that casualty numbers do not matter because they are the aggressor. War and self defense don’t go by score they are absolute and the winner wins. The argument against us using nuclear weapons in WWII is the same, Japan tried to take advantage of our back door when we supposedly were vulnerable. That is the lowest of the low and when a country, group or person does that in that way they deserve everything that comes from it. Counting casualties is simply the liberal philosophy of moral relativism. It also happens every time you try to argue with a liberal, when they begin to lose all aprobation and manners go out the window. You‘d think they’ed get this.

      The well informed rational people among us may already now these things; but, the rest of society does not.

      Breaking the stories, and backing them with proof, is what ultimately informs the so-called “masses”.

      It won’t happen directly, for the most part, though.

      They don’t read the Blaze, watch Fox (or much of any other) News or tend to spend much time thinking about the world.

      For most people, their friends (who are paying attention) have to inform them.

      If they have mostly liberal friends, it becomes an up hill struggle; but, they can be reached, at least sometimes.

      More importantly, perhaps, when a news outlet becomes as big as Fox (or as big as the Blaze is becoming), it’s reporting begins to have a nearly direct impact on the politicians. Even if the majority of Americans manage to keep their heads in the sand, there are now enough paying attention to the conservative news outlets, and a fraction of total acting on what the learn, to change the shape of politics in this country.

      It doesn’t take everyone to change the way things are.
      It just takes us, the few others we can reach, and a twice every two years trip to the polls (primary + general).
      The Tea Party proves it.

    There‘s always have to be one or two that don’t like Israel and Beck. But they never leave, now why is that? Just makes me wonder, I don’t listen to CNN, or MSNBC, or any of the other left wing media. Don’t go to their websites because I want to hear the truth. But yet they think that they can convince us that God has lied to us, and Beck is lying to us. If they think they are lying to them why are they here? Hamas can‘t count and they sure don’t use the same math as AMERICA or ISRAEL. I just pray for peace for Israel then all those can tell God about it.

      Yes I heard Glenn Beck & crew mocking and making fun of Palestinian casualties yesterday on the radio and I find it absolutely disgusting! Do they do it? Probably. Do Jewish interests control about 99% of Media in the West and spin everything in their favor? Absolutely!

      So is it safe to say that Palestinians try to drum up some sympathy for their cause? Are they the only ones that desire sympathy?

      Why don‘t we begin to have a debate an educated and fact based discussion on the topic of the Jew’s Holocuast industry? Anyone up to it? Or are we only capable of rolling with laughter, mocking and patronizing grief stricken Palestinian families?

      You people are simply sick in the head! Especially you Glenn Beck.

      Also heard your luminary Glenn telling everyone yesterdday that all Jews, Christians, and Muslims serve the same God and are all headed to heaven..       @TECHENGINEER11: If you love Palestine so much, then move there. Not everyone makes fun of war. You are entitled to your opinion of course, but don’t make blanket accusations like that. I do believe the 6 million Jews killed during the WWII was not exaggerated. That count was taken by the Allied forces after liberating the German Jews and other countries. The whole world was involved in that, and affected by it. So please spare us the lecture on how we should behave. 99% of us in here will support Israel, and also hope the Palestinian civilians will rise up against Hamas and stop their violence against innocent civilians. The last time I checked Hamas was in the business of attacking tour buses, suicide bombs in crowded mall areas, etc. None of us here will support those terrorist tactics. You are entitled to if you want.

      Furthermore, there’s evidence in National papers that the Jews were claiming 6 Million had been murdered 3 or 4 times in different places around the world even before WW2 began. I’ve seen the headlines!

      For the record I don’t love Palestine and I despise Islam. I simply do not want to choose sides in a matter which has nothing to do with the US and I resent greatly the Jewish propaganda being aimed at us through their various Media.

      Shellback: Sometimes it does. I simply desire to see a lot more critcal thinking given to all issues. Most issues are far more complex and involved than they may appear on the surface and it seems that many (Beck, Hannity, Oreilly, Levine, Limbaugh, etc) have been given the job to rally the sheep into coming around to Rupert Murdoch’s particular point of view which is not always in the best interest of the USA! By the way Rupert is an Israeli citizen..

      @TECHENGINEER11: you are referring to one camp, let us not forget the other mass grave sites and camps all around Europe, which the total claimed came to roughly 6 million. It was not just being claimed by the Jews, it was also counted and claimed by the Allied forces like I had mentioned in my first post. Now you also mentioned the other conservative radio and T.V. personalities, so I have no doubt your another liberal trying to prove how smart you are, which again you are entitled to your own opinion. It gets me a little upset when liberals try to deny the holocaust, or down grade the number of actual deaths. You are just going to have to get over the fact that it really happened, and that their are really evil people like Adolf Hitler, Hamas, etc. in this world and that the only thing these evil people understand is force. There is no other way around it, as much as we would like to solve the problems with a hand shake and a smile. These nut bags do want to understand that things can be solved with peace. Why can’t you liberals understand this.
