How Long Has Obama Been Fighting With Catholics? Consider the History

This week‘s announcement of the State Department’s placing the Vatican on a money laundering “Watch List” raised many questions about this Administration and what appears to be an ongoing battle with the Catholic Church.
Is this a new fight? Not really. The Democrats let Conservative Catholics know where they stood back in 2008.
As the political party was preparing to gather in Denver in order to formalize the nomination of Barack Obama, Democrats chose not to invite the Catholic leader of the host city. Archbishop Charles Chaput (a staunch defender of the unborn and now presiding over the Philadelphia diocese) was not on the list of Catholics who would be leading prayers before and during the convention. There were some prominent, liberal Catholic names on the schedule: Sister Helen Prejean of “Dead Man Walking” fame and Social Justice lobbyist Sister Catherine Pinkerton got an invite.
Archbishop Chaput was eventually offered a couple of tickets to watch the convention from the cheap seats. According to news reports, the Archbishop did not attend the convention’s opening night and the Democrats reported he chose to reject their ticket offer. The reality: instead of sitting in the bleachers and watching Liberal Catholics from outside of his diocese deliver the invocation, Chaput and Dr. Alveda King led a pro-life prayer vigil at Martin Luther King Park in Denver.
But the snubbing didn’t end there. Catholic faith leaders were also absent from the president’s inauguration — they were not invited. Not a single member of the Catholic clergy was asked to be part of the swearing-in ceremonies. There were some faith leaders that were part of Obama’s inauguration to be sure. The Evangelical Pastor Rick Warren (who since has supported Catholics over the Obamacare / HHS Mandate), gay Episcopalian bishop Gene Robinson, and Protestant minister Joseph Lowery from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference were all part of the historic moment. Dr. Lowery delivered the emotional (if not very unique) invocation:
There was faith diversity on the podium at the Inauguration — just no Catholics.
Why were no conservative Catholics invited to the Democratic convention in Denver and not a single Catholic faith leader included in the President’s inauguration?
The reasons may go back to the summer of 2007 when then-Senator (and candidate) Barack Obama made a pledge to Planned Parenthood concerning his first act as President:
Obama pledged his allegiance to Planned Parenthood: “I‘m absolutely convinced that we’re not just gonna win an election, but more importantly, we’re gonna transform this nation.”
Fast-forward to April 29th of 2009 when the President was forced to address his unfulfilled promise to Planned Parenthood, stating that passing the Freedom of Choice Act was not the “highest legislative priority.” It is also worth noting that Senator Obama was a co-sponsor of the Senate version of the bill.
Rewind to 2008 and the Denver snub. After securing enough delegates to win his party’s nomination, Obama and the Democrats proceeded to build their platform for the coming election. In August of 2008, they were adding some teeth to their platform planks, especially in the pro-choice arena. According to a report by Austin Ruse of TheCatholicThing.org:
The new plank talks about supporting Roe in addition to supporting a distinct and potentially broader “woman’s right to choose safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay.”
Mr. Ruse continues:
“it also calls for the adoption of the Freedom of Choice Act, a scurrilous measure co-sponsored by Senator Obama which may escape the notice of those who do not know its details. In it, you will find things like the requirement that government not “discriminate” against abortion in the “provision of benefits” or “information.” Remember Rust v. Sullivan? That was the case affirming the government’s right to favor childbirth over abortion in its funding decisions. The Democrat plank would overturn Rust and require that even programs for adoption and parenting promote abortion.”
With the major planks of the Obama election platform including aggressive pro-abortion language, it is doubtful that the Democrats would invite a staunch pro-lifer like Archbishop Chaput to speak or pray at their convention. Dems certainly wanted to avoid a situation like the one that happened in 2000 when their convention was held in Los Angeles. It was in L.A. that Catholic Cardinal Mahony was invited to address the Democrats and he delivered the following invocation:
“O God, we trust that you will keep us ever committed to protect the life and well-being of all people but especially unborn children, the sick and the elderly, those on skid row and those on death row.”
It would seem that the current squabbles between the Obama Administration and the Catholic Church are not something born after the passage of the “Affordable Care Act.” Just last week The Blaze reported on Cardinal Dolan’s letter that revealed the administration’s lectures to Catholic Bishops instructing them to listen to “enlightened” voices of accommodation. However, the roots of this fight go back at least five years to 2007 and they are ongoing. The big question is how much longer will it continue?
A hat tip to Michael Voris of “The Vortex.” Three years ago, he noted that President Obama has a history of fighting against the more conservative wing of the Roman Catholic Church.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:31pmI am stunned to hear liberals pretend they are, well, liberal. They will not utter a word against Islam, of course, that might be dangerous; but, I don’t think that is the only thing stopping liberals. Chris Matthews made egregious comments about Mormons and the Romney candidacy. Devout Catholics are targetted while name-only Catholics roll over and allow themsleves to be subverted. One must admit that liberals recognize their true opponents – Christ and honest Christians. But, when a man and/or a group set themselves up to fight against God, the only result will be terrible for men and groups. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God.

“Federal money can’t go toward abortion? Maybe in a perfect OR should I say HONEST world. Educate yourself on Planned Parenthood.”
Indeed, if the laws are followed, it can’t. So if you can get proof that a clinic is using federal funds for abortion, go ahead and make a lawsuit. You cannot very well claim the law isn‘t working if no one’s refusing to take action; it’s calling someone guilty before they proven to be so.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 12:11pmHow can they separate the money?
What constitutes paying for abortions?
If federal money pays the rent on facilities where are abortions are done or even suggested is that not paying for abortions?
If federal money pays the electric bill where abortions are done or suggested they be done, is that not paying for abortions?
If federal money is used to pay the salary of someone who tells people where to go for abortions, is that not paying for abortions?
Yes ,these are not direct payments but the abortions wont be done if there is no facility, electricity or the people pushing them are not being paid?
If the company performs and or sponsors abortions how can you say that the money doesn’t go to fund abortions. Just the simple fact of paying to help keep the doors open is funding abortions. If the money only goes to the executives who write the rules about abortions then the money is funding abortions.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 12:55pmAnother issue that needs to be explored regarding Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics is what happens to the fetuses they “harvest”. Just read recently that they are purchased by biotech companies for use testing products that you eat and drink everyday. So this may be a much bigger business venture than just the money made for the abortion itself. Also, late term abortion with more developed tissue are sold for a premium. Ummmmm. And if anybody does check into this, follow the money.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 1:28pmLocked,
Of course it is paying for abortions. It is an accounting trick.
It is similar to the “lottery goes to education” gambit. TECHNICALLY it does, but the state just allocates less to education based on the projected earnings of lotto. Money that PP would have to pay to keep the lights on, do breast cancer “screenings”, etc, is allocated to “abortions” because they know the federal government will fill that gap and pay for those things. It is nothing but moving cash around between two different pots.
Yet another of our government’s great deceptions.

He used it to differentiate between real Christians and those in the various heresies like Gnosticism by pointing out that the others didn’t follow all of the teachings of the Church. Actually, there’s a question. Were there Catholic leaders at Bush’s inauguration? Information online says that there were Baptists giving the prayers for both Bush and Obama, but I can’t find references to Catholics.
I was raised Catholic myself, but honestly I just look at situations like this and shake my head. Obama’s been chomping down on all freedoms; it’s not a Catholic-only, or even religion-only, thing. Even though I’m not part of the Church any more I still find it offensive when someone like Beck says “We are all Catholics.” No. You’re not. The proper term is “We are all Christian;” if you were Catholic, you would reject Mormonism (and any Protestant sect, as they’re apostates as well).
I left the Catholic Church because of the “Us versus Them” mentality and superior attitude; it’s disheartening to see so many of my Christian brethren still embracing these… in politics, religion, even their day-to-day lives. Humility is Christ’s characteristic, not forming cliques. Making this fight out to be about one specific version of Christianity, rather than an all-out blitz on ALL our rights, is a divisive, insincere, and inaccurate tactic.

I suggest that you go to Michael Voris’ website RealCatholicTV.com and browse around because you should learn about the Faith before turning away from it.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 8:43amDon‘t know which faiths were represented at Bush’s inaugurals. However, Bush wasn’t actively going after the Muslim vote as Obama has gone after the (liberal) Catholic (lots of Catholic Hispanics out there) vote. You must be able to see the POTUS and his legion are trying to split – even splinter – Catholics by marginalizing the conservative ones.

“You are the product of a poor knowledge of Catholism.”
As it’s Catholicism, not Catholism, I think I might have a better grasp than you do. But I somehow doubt anything I’ll read will replace what 10 years of religious education taught me: Catholics are the true followers of Christ, the Church was founded by Peter, and all other Christians are misguided apostates.
There was always a smug sense of moral superiority; to give an anecdote, when I went to college, I asked my new roommate about his religion.
“Oh, I’m Christian,” he said.
“Ok… what kind of Christian?” I replied.
“Um… the kind that follows Christ?”
“No, what denomination.”
“Oh. Lutheran.”
That’s something a Catholic will never do: respond that they are “Christian” instead of “Catholic.” It’s all about pride: pride in the 2000-year history of the Church, pride in being “the original” Christians, pride in being by far the largest branch of Christianity.
But that’s neither here nor there. That’s simply the feeling of being a Catholic; the grandoise churches, the murals and frescos, the scripted masses… they all emphasize the vast pride of the religion. I finally realized it‘s contrary to Christ’s teachings, and stopped attending Catholic mass. There are plenty of good Christians in the Catholic church, but the religion itself does not, in my opinion, follow Christ’s teachings. Your mileage may vary.
A little off-topic, sorry. But I “get” Catholicism ju

“However, Bush wasn’t actively going after the Muslim vote as Obama has gone after the (liberal) Catholic (lots of Catholic Hispanics out there) vote.”
Most Hispanics are actually very conservative Catholics; especially recent immigrants. Where they split with the GOP is not over religion, but over immigration and the perceived prejudice against those whose first language is not English.
Take it from someone living in Florida and who is fluent in Spanish. Most legal immigrants to the US from Central and South America are conservative in nature and religious views. The liberal ones are often the illegal immigrants (who can’t vote) or second/third-generation Hispanic families (who, like more and more young people, are becoming more liberalized and less religious).

LOCKED, I hope I say this right – I am short on coffee! – Glenn’s point that “We are all Catholics now” isn’t to be taken literally, but points to the need for each citizen (whatever his faith system) to unify against the religious freedom attacks being made against the largest organized religion in America. The idea is, if that institution can be brought down, then there will be a domino effect across other religions that stand in the way of a political agenda. We need your help as we face the pattern of anti-Catholic behaviors that have been punctuated in at least 2 policies that directly violate Christian consciences: Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me. (And by the way, you are right that Christianity is under attack, Catholics are just the first and most blatantly singled-out group of Christians. That is Glenn’s point about how we need to stop it now by unifying.)

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 11:28amI agree that the attack is a broad based attack on the historical conservative culture, but that includes an attack on one of his positions most staunch adversaries. Quite a bit of his campaign promises and agenda since taking office has been to undermine the social structure through Obamacare and the “women’s health” debate which is anchored in the old school progressive doctrine of abortion and eugenics. The most unwavering stalwart opponent of abortion since its inception has been the Catholic Church which therefore makes them enemy number one in the eyes of the current administration. FWI the definition of the word Catholic is, universal or of general interest; liberal, having broad interests, or wide sympathies; or inclusive, inviting and containing strong evangelism. Come home, you are very welcome to come to church with me!!!

Report Post »That is a weak excuse for leaving the Church and your Christian faith. Maybe that is because you did not realize that the Church is made up of humans who are flawed. The very reason you left is the very reason I love my Church, because I never hear criticism of others or boasting. The message is to love others as God loves us, no matter what denomination they are.
I teach children at my parish and this is the message I give them over and over.

Allow me to offer You the gift of fasting one day a week throughout Lent to save all of humanity, so that they can enter the gates of the New Paradise on Earth.
I offer You, dear Jesus, my sacrifice with love and joy in my heart to show You the extent of my love. Through this sacrifice I beg You for the salvation of every soul who may have fallen from grace. Amen.”

“That is a weak excuse for leaving the Church and your Christian faith”
Whoa whoa whoa… take a step back. I left the Catholic Church; but my faith in Christ is stronger than ever. It was only once I no longer called myself “Catholic” that I realized how much I was missing by not calling myself “Christian;” instead of searching in the Bible for answers, Sunday School told me to ask the priest if I had questions.
I very much agree that humans are flawed; and Christians more than most, as many of us are looking to better ourselves (implying that we’re very aware of our imperfections now). But it was systemic in Catholicism; it wasn’t the actual people who were the source of vanity and pride, but the structure of the church itself. It’s having an enormous new church built instead of a halfway house with a small chapel. It’s having the Vatican be opulent and awe-inspiring while the majority of Catholics worldwide live on a couple dollars a day.
Now, most big churches are similar, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make impressive structures to show our love for God. But I found in Catholicism, more than any other Christian faith I’ve looked in upon, a feeling of “We’re the best” while being the furthest from the teachings of Christ himself. Again, your mileage may vary… but for me, it wasn’t until I opened my heart to God and closed by ears to the priests that I truly felt “Christian.”

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 5:33pmLOCKED, I undestand where you’re coming from in regards to the Catholic faith. I was raised in a devout Catholic family. I stopped going to mass in my twenties because I couldn’t stomach the “holier than thou” attitude of the Catholic Church. After a born again experience in my thirties I started searching for God & ended up back in the Catholic Church. Faith is a journey, some have to go all around the subdivision to get down the street. I still find at times the “holier than thou” group–sometimes I’m sure people may think the same of me. If you trust in God he will lead you where you need to be. Please don‘t allow other people’s arrogance or poor behavior to hinder you relationship with Jesus at it’s deepest level wherever that may be. God Bless!

Report Post »I am not going to bash the Catholic Church in my comment, so if you take it as such, you took it wrong. I had a very close Catholic friend sometime ago. She would refer to me as a “born-againer” instead of a Baptist. I asked her about this and she told me that being Catholic they don’t recognize the “born-again” belief. I asked her if she was going to heaven and she gave me a whole list of church rituals she did as a child that guaranteed her place in God’s kingdom. Being born again and accepting Jesus’ free gift of salvation had nothing to do with it. It was all about the church’s rituals. My friend was in her 50′s at the time. She spent all her school years in Catholic school. Her family had always been Catholic and her grandparents were straight from Italy where they were Catholics. She lives in none other than Youngstown, OH where I would believe per capita has more Italian Catholics than anyother city in the U.S. So it is safe to say, she knows what it means to be Catholic. So my question to you is, how does your born again experience fit in to your Catholic Church?

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 8:10am@MYCOMET123
Report Post »Unfortunately your friend was in error. Although she spent her whole life in the Church she never catechized herself properly. Rituals do not convey guaranteed salvation. The concept “Born again” only applies to baptism, which the person is blessed with Holy Water in the name of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Once a person is baptized, the Holy Spirit leaves it’s indelible mark on the soul, that being original sin is no longer present and the person becomes the adopted brother/sister in Christ. In other words, once baptized always baptized. This doesn’t mean that we are no longer flawed and can not sin. Salvation is an ongoing battle throughout the believers life.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 9:43amROBMAC68, I realize the Catholic Church doesn’t “believe in the born again experience”. The doctrine in the Catholic Church teaches the sacrement of Confirmation is the dispensation of the Holy Spirit (as least that’s the way I understand it anyhow, I could be wrong). All I know is that when I was Confirmed I wasn’t change as far as I could tell. My born again experience which is way to long to explain was, long story short, an awakening of the awareness of God. Before this happened I believe in God just never really thought about Him. After this experience everything was directed towards an awareness of God. I‘m not trying to say that people in the sacrement of Confirmation don’t receive the Holy Spirit (if that what it was suppose to happen?) BUT, it didn’t happen that way for me. I am Catholic because I BELIEVE that the Eucharist is the true Body,Blood,Soul & Divinity of Jesus. Why, because receiving the Eucharist each day (which the Holy Spirit lead me to do) delivered me from alcoholism. Once you Believe in the Eucharist, as Peter stated “Lord, to whom shall we go?” John 6:53-69. There is no other place for me to go!

PEOPLE WILL SEE THIS AS A FREEDOM ISSUE! This is an attack on freedom and an attempt to ease us into their reformative government that is without freedom. Posted on March 14, 2012 at 8:14amThere will NEVER be a takeover inside the church. EVER! He wants to take control of the country and limit the church. He wants a complete takeover of the government and the constitution and the church is just a sideline issue that he wishes to push aside and diminish. If he succeeds the churches may have to practice in private like some did in countries where they had no religious freedom. They may need to close all hospitals and adoption centers that they have to avoid having to comply with government mandates to perform abortions or sanction gay adoptions. The country will be the loser. The catholic church and their charities have done alot for Americans. It will be their loss if the government decides to take away religious freedom.
