How Much Actual Beef Is in Taco Bell‘s ’Meat Filling’?

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama law firm claims in a lawsuit that Taco Bell is using false advertising when it refers to using “seasoned ground beef” or “seasoned beef” in its products.
The meat mixture sold by Taco Bell restaurants contains binders and extenders and does not meet the minimum requirements set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to be labeled as “beef,” according to the legal complaint.
The class-action lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in the Central District of California by the Montgomery law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles.
Attorney Dee Miles said attorneys had Taco Bell’s “meat mixture” tested and found it contained less that 35 percent beef.
The lawsuit on behalf of Taco Bell customer and California resident Amanda Obney does not seek monetary damages, but asks the court to order Taco Bell to be honest in its advertising.
“We are asking that they stop saying that they are selling beef,” Miles said.
Irvine, Calif.-based Taco Bell spokesman Rob Poetsch (PAYCH) said the company denies that its advertising is misleading.
“Taco Bell prides itself on serving high quality Mexican inspired food with great value. We’re happy that the millions of customers we serve every week agree,” Poetsch said. He said the company would “vigorously defend the suit.”
The lawsuit says that Taco Bell’s “seasoned beef” contains other ingredients, including water, wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent and modified corn starch.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:46amTaco Bell really sucks big time. My son loves tacos and always wanted to go there but after eating one taco I realized it was crap so I learned how to make them myself. All fresh ingrediants minus the preservatives (other than what is in prepared salsas) with better quality beef- I always pick out a piece of beef that is fresh and coarse-grind it instead of buying prepackaged ground beef made from “whatever cuts”. If you enjoy something a fast food restaurant makes, learn how to do it yourself because the recipes are available online-Wendy’s chili is a good example.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 11:06amYears ago, and I am dating myself…Taco Bell made their ingredients fresh in the stores. Beans, meat fillings…taco shells.
A friend worked at Taco Bell and it was really fresh. The lettuce did come already shredded.
The product wasn’t always consistent, and at some point it was mass produced off site. Today, I’ve seen it come in large plastic bags.
Report Post »CygnusX1
Posted on January 25, 2011 at 5:46pm@ Smalldog – Yeah, many moons ago I worked at TB. The cheese was genuine cheddar that came in plastic sealed blocks that were shredded on site. The beans were real Pintos beans that came in big burlap bags. We poured them into big pressure cookers & cooked them with a seasoning pack. Then added some lard and using an electric drill with the equivalent of a paint mixer attachment, we would “Mash” them into re-fried beans. The ground beef were big twenty pound (I think) vacuum sealed bags that we actually cooked in big pans/tubs over a gas burner with a seasoning pack, using a special “Rake” until it was cooked and had the right consistency. The Corn shells and the flour shells for the taco salad, were deep fried with special racks that held the shape of the tortilla until it was cooked. Then years later, I talked to a kid I knew that was working at the same TB restaurant I had, and he said EVERYTHING came in big plastic bags, pre-prepped. All they did was throw it into warmers and serve. He was stunned when I told him how things used to be.
I entirely quit eating there, when I found out from two different friends that work for local law enforcement, that three “Latinos of questionable citizenship” employees were arrested when the management caught them mixing human (Theirs) excrement into the re-fried beans. This was never reported in the local newspapers. Somehow it was kept VERY quite. But my police friends confirmed it.
Bottom line. It you are uncomfortable as to what is made of, and you can not personally witness it being made, and teenagers or illegals are employed, stay away from any fast food or even non-reputable slow-food restaurants!
The choice is always yours. They all may advertise heavily, but they can not force you to go there and eat the stuff. Unless of course the Government takes them over and eliminates all other options as they are doing with so many others aspects of business in America.
Happy eating!

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 12:55pm“Mexican inspired” means that the food has been adapted for American tastes. All “ethnic” food chains adapt their food to the preferred tastes of the countries in which they operate. Many Americans couldn’t handle real Mexican food. Likewise, Chinese food served in the US is quite different from what is actually eaten in China. And McDonalds has different types of burgers for the different countries in which they operate.
(By the way, the authentic way to make refried beans usually includes pork and lard. TB uses vegetable oil, so there’s no cholesterol.)

Why the continuing attacks on me? First you accuse me of unethical practices and then continue to attack me! But that is okay, I forgive you. You are probably right in not eating out you just never know what is happening with your food. I would say occurrences of tampering are actually fairly low…Unless it is in retaliation for rudeness…But you do have the typical behaviors of not wearing gloves, of loose hair, dropped and reused utensils and even food…Not to mention dirty dishes…
But I can relate an experience I had as a manager of a Wendy’s. One morning one of the crew caught the grill cook peeing in the chili. He was prepping the big pot before open and it was in a secluded back area and he literally pissed right in it! Of course we called the police and he was arrested. The chili pot with everything in it was taken as evidence. Needless to say he was fired on the spot but the question had to be asked…Had he ever done this before? Of course he denied it, but…
Some restaurants I have worked at have been better than others. You really can’t go by which chain it is either as they will vary store to store and franchise to franchise. I worked at a Hungry Howies that was just plain nasty. But it was only that particular store. OTOH, I worked for a Red Lobster for years and they took food safety seriously. Good, quality conscientious people there, I still eat there. You just never know.
Anyway 48, I was just messing with you. Your first comment to me was really most unfair. I would never serve anything that has been compromised. But if you are surprised or offended that it does happen…You should seriously start thinking things through.
