How Much Did Obama’s Family Vacation Cost Taxpayers?

Over $1.4 million. That’s the generous estimate of how much the Obama family vacation cost taxpayers this Christmas. $1,474,200 to be exact.

The Hawaii Reporter compiled an estimated account of expenses for the Obama trip and found that, before factoring in unknown costs, taxpayers forked over almost $1.5 million. Here’s how the paper broke it down:

  • Mrs. Obama’s early flight to Hawaii: $63,000 (White House Dossier)
  • Obama’s round trip flight to Hawaii: $1 million (GAO estimates)
  • Housing in beachfront homes for Secret Service and Seals in Kailua ($1,200 a day for 14 days): $16,800
  • Costs for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel: $134,400 ($400 per day for 24 staff) – excluding meals and other room costs
  • Police overtime: $250,000 (2009 costs reported by Honolulu Police Department)
  • Ambulance: $10,000 (City Spokesperson)
  • TOTAL COST: $1,474,200

Then there are the unknown costs:

  • Rental of office building in Kailua on canal
  • Security upgrades and additional phone lines
  • Costs for car rentals and fuel for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel (Secret Service imports most of the cars used here to escort the president)
  • Surveillance before the president arrives
  • Travel costs for Secret Service and White House staff traveling ahead of the President

Yes, the president deserves a vacation. But the paper suggests that the Obamas could have used housing on military bases to save on costs such as security and housing for support personnel:

They could have chosen a less expensive and more secure place to stay such as a beachfront home on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station – just a two-minute drive away from the Kailuana Place property where they are now. The president visits the military base daily to workout, bowl with his kids or enjoy the more private beach there. He also could have stayed at a home 15 minutes away on the beach fronting Bellows Air Force Base as President Bill Clinton did.

But he didn’t. Instead, the president and his friends pooled their money for the “Winter White House.”

“The 7,000 square foot home,” the paper says, “features 5 bedrooms, 5 ½ bathrooms, a media room with surround sound, a kitchen suited for a master chef, a dining room and great room, a secluded lagoon-style pool with tropical waterfalls and a lavish island spa. The ocean lanai and garden lanai showcase ornate landscaping and stunning views of Kailua Bay and Mount Olomana.”

While taxpayers didn’t pay directly for the actual house, they did end up paying for the decision.

But it sure helps demonize me, so when confronted with facts you dont have to defend your views. Becks plan is working on you nicely. And hes getting richer in the process.     Must be nice to vacation on our dime. This what I found on the internet- as of 2001. Pres salary $400,000 , Expense acct. $50,000, Travel acct free of taxes $100,000, Entertainment $19,000. Where is the rest of the monies coming from ? I haven’t been able to afford a vacation for over 5 years.

    Stories like this make us look petty. Why not just re-run old stories that are actually relevant? There’s a whole bunch of stuff the left is still clueless about because it was covered during the campaign frenzy / honeymoon period.

    All this attention they pay to us now, why not go for it? Let them “debunk” it. I could think of several dozen things right now. It has to be better than whining about pocket change.

    This is his pay back for what the Brits did to his grandfather. He believes he is entitled to these things and by golly he is going to take full advantage of this situation he finds himself in…that being the President of the USA. When this man moves it cost money. Has he even tried to limit his movements since being in office. What will be the total cost of this mans vacations vs lets say any other president in our history. I’d like to see a comparision made. What will be the estimated total of his expenses if this trend continues for a full 8 year stay in our White House? How many vacations did he take in 2010? Why wasn’t Officer housing good enough for him? Officer housing in HI is some pretty good digs esp out on Ford Island. Good security to boot.

    The 24 WH staff, were they on vacation as well or did we cover there expenses so that they could work over there. If they were on vacation, should have been there money, and if they were working, they should really start investing in some of the technological advances they keep wanting to regulate… ever heard of netmeetings and teleconferencing WH. We know the President has a Blackberry, what does he use it for a paperweight.

    I have zero problem with the security or even the cost of the Air Force one flight, he’s the President, but Why does Michelle always go on these vacations a day or so ahead of time? What’s the deal there.

      Wooo 17M in 8 years for the 77 trips. Wanna give us the amount of Obama’s flight costs so far? Also overlooking the cost of renting the vacation property… for Bush… $0. For Obama’s Christmas 2010 trip alone is $3,500 per day.

    I don’t mind him taking a vacation, but use some common sense when you are spending the public’s money. The military base option for the support staff seems like a no brainer. Mama O could have waited and traveled with Barry.

    Also, I’m sure we paid for all the staff and the secret services meals. I don’t see that included above.

      Yes maybe, but you need to also keep in mind that by the time of the 2012 elections roll around there really won’t be much money left to continue to sustain all of these government positions. There are going be a few million more forclosers and there will be no more bank bail-out money. There will not be enough money to bail-out the unions that keep GM workers employed. Yeah, lets see how many will continue to support him when the gravy train is gone. What about California, New York, Illionois? They will be the next in line for a hand out.       Who cares about Bush! He’s been out of the picture for 2 years. Obama and Company has spent more of taxpayers money just on vacations in the last 2 years than Bush did in his 2 terms of office. I have never been a Bush fan either but Obama really takes the cake!!! How much did Obama spend of OUR money on this last election just campaigning for his cronies? Do you know what it entails every time he went from state to state? Obviously that was just a huge waste of my money but it was worth every dime to see most of the progressives (oops, I meant Democrats) loose.       I‘m just glad he’s on vacation…again. Every day he‘s not in office is a day when he’s not signing more legislation. If I had my druthers I’d have every member of Congress as well as the President on vacation 51 weeks a year. Ultimately it would cost us all a hell of a lot less in the long run.

      I think the reason people are upset is just that this president is spending money we don’t have. In times of severe economic crisis, when he is telling us to tighten our belts and that we need to “have some skin in the game” he seems to act like he is a billionaire jetsetter. I don’t begrudge him a vacation, but he is not even trying to act like he is concerned about being conservative in his spending of the taxpayers hard earned money.

      I agree with Kate – vacationing is not the problem here – its the complete lack of responisibility with which he vacations. Just like his wife leaving early to fly out there at the cost of $63,000, and wanting a nicer house than the ones available on a nearby base he planned on visiting daily anyway. This very same vacation could have cost the taxpayers much less if Obama really cared.

      I agree but how many vacations are the Obumers going to take? They have had more vacations in two years than most Americans could afford in the past ten to fifteen years. And many Americans haven’t been able to afford a vacation in longer than they can remember.

      Extravagant behavior at the cost of those in this country struggling just to live week to week.

      Yup… Bush makes a trip back to the ranch and the media crusifies him and protest at the gate… Yet this freak… Sheik Obama plays more basket ball and golf and takes more vacations than any president ever and he is praised for it. Meanwhile, the people are stuggling to make ends meet if they can even get the ends close together at all and he is out there throwing our money around like it is from Milton Bradley….       Yep…….SIX MILLION, SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND, and SIX DOLLARS. This ‘man’, hasn‘t cared how much he’s spent in EVERYTHING he’s saddled this country with so far, so why change now?? We already know how much his wife loves this country, anybody think he’s any different? They are RUBBING it all over our faces people. That’s alright, he‘s gone in two years unless he use’s his “executive order” power he said he will use to ‘force through’ the Dream Act. That will give him 10 MILLION votes and a victory in 2012. Hopefully we can keep the damage to a minimum before he’s thrown out. History will regard him as the WORST President EVER, THERE IS NO DOUBT!!!!!!!!

      While many of those costs are necessary for the protection of the president—-any president—he should be scaling back in a time of deep recession and be an example to the nation he SERVES. But I think he believes the nation is here to serve him.
      Many people have been going without for too long now and for the president to spend lavishly is poor taste and screams of self-importance.
      By the way… isn’t 14 days a bit long? I mean, most people who can afford to vacation these days, which is by the way not too many of us anymore, usually vacation for a week or less.

      The only thing the taxpayers should pay for is the protection. POTUS gets a salary, he should pay for all his and his family’s expenses. And he should be limited to two weeks vacation per year like most of the American people are. I am tired of our “civil servants” living better than the people they are supposed to serve. I don’t want to hear anything about needing more vacations because he has a stressful job. All he does for foreign relations is apologize to every country on the planet. At least he HAS a job and will collect a generous retirement from us taxpayers long after social security leaves us without anyway to retire. For most people every day is a stressful one without any vacation in sight.

      Bush’s tax cuts didn’t cost a penny. Saying tax cuts add to the deficit is like you buying a $1 million house you can’t afford and then blaming your neighbor for your increased debt when he won’t give you the money to make your mortgage payments. If you spend money you don’t have, expecting to mooch off of others to pay your debt, it’s not the person who won’t let you steal his money who’s responsible for your problem.

      2. we got bombed by Al Queda bucause Clinton counldnt leave Monica Lewinsky(22 at the time) alone and when we had a chance to take him out, he was “unavaialble at the time” and Sany Berger wouldnt make the call to put a round through his head.       Brings to mind the scene of MO standing on a White House terrace overlooking the rose garden. It was last year? – the day of the annual easter egg roll/hunt and there were lots of young kids, and families milling around below. She looked down at her adoring subjects and said, “Welcome to our back yard”. Somebody needs to tell her that they don’t own the White House, the people do – they have just been given the priviledge to live in OUR house temporarily. And we would appreciate it if they left it just as it was given to them. The nightmare continues. How many more days till 2012!?!!!
