How on Earth Did OBL Manage to E-mail Without Internet, and Without U.S. Noticing?

How on Earth Did OBL Manage to E mail Without Internet, and Without U.S. Noticing?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite having no Internet access in his hideout, Osama bin Laden was a prolific email writer who built a painstaking system that kept him one step ahead of the U.S. government’s best eavesdroppers.

His methods, described in new detail to The Associated Press by a counterterrorism official and a second person briefed on the U.S. investigation, served him well for years and frustrated Western efforts to trace him through cyberspace. The arrangement allowed bin Laden to stay in touch worldwide without leaving any digital fingerprints behind.

The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive intelligence analysis.

Bin Laden’s system was built on discipline and trust. But it also left behind an extensive archive of email exchanges for the U.S. to scour. The trove of electronic records pulled out of his compound after he was killed last week is revealing thousands of messages and potentially hundreds of email addresses, the AP has learned.

Holed up in his walled compound in northeast Pakistan with no phone or Internet capabilities, bin Laden would type a message on his computer without an Internet connection, then save it using a thumb-sized flash drive. He then passed the flash drive to a trusted courier, who would head for a distant Internet cafe.

At that location, the courier would plug the memory drive into a computer, copy bin Laden’s message into an email and send it. Reversing the process, the courier would copy any incoming email to the flash drive and return to the compound, where bin Laden would read his messages offline.

It was a slow, toilsome process. And it was so meticulous that even veteran intelligence officials have marveled at bin Laden’s ability to maintain it for so long. The U.S. always suspected bin Laden was communicating through couriers but did not anticipate the breadth of his communications as revealed by the materials he left behind.

Navy SEALs hauled away roughly 100 flash memory drives after they killed bin Laden, and officials said they appear to archive the back-and-forth communication between bin Laden and his associates around the world.

Al-Qaida operatives are known to change email addresses, so it‘s unclear how many are still active since bin Laden’s death. But the long list of electronic addresses and phone numbers in the emails is expected to touch off a flurry of national security letters and subpoenas to Internet service providers. The Justice Department is already coming off a year in which it significantly increased the number of national security letters, which allow the FBI to quickly demand information from companies and others without asking a judge to formally issue a subpoena.

Officials gave no indication that bin Laden was communicating with anyone inside the U.S., but terrorists have historically used U.S.-based Internet providers or free Internet-based email services.

The cache of electronic documents is so enormous that the government has enlisted Arabic speakers from around the intelligence community to pore over it. Officials have said the records revealed no new terror plot but showed bin Laden remained involved in al-Qaida’s operations long after the U.S. had assumed he had passed control to his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri.

The files seized from bin Laden’s compound not only have the potential to help the U.S. find other al-Qaida figures, they may also force terrorists to change their routines. That could make them more vulnerable to making mistakes and being discovered.

Don‘t be surprised if the technology of old isn’t being used right now to keep under the radar…

Remember the days of BBS’ing? Bulletin Board Systems were all the rage in the 1980‘s through the 1990’s…. these were normal off the shelve computers with a bunch of modems attach to it running BBS software. People would call into a telco# of a BBS computer to connect and post messages in message forums and to retrieve private messages and to upload and download files, usually pirated copies of games and software….

So what better way to communicate with a large group of persons around the nation, or globe and pass messages and files to/from one another without ever having to connect to the internet, or use a cellphone or IM message… plain old copper telco lines which unlike internet snooping which requires no warrant, telco “tapping” requires a warrant, and if the data is being encrypted, the eavesdropper would have to record the entire session from dialup to hangup and then translate the captured audio data to digital form and then try to unencrypt it, a daunting and timely amount of work… Sometimes Lo-Tech can be very outwitting!

I don‘t know why anyone would be surprised that this psychopathic killer wouldn’t continue doing what he was doing from his trash-hole in Pakistan. The guy is a narcissist and obsessed with his own glory and his glory comes from mass-murdering the infidels and controlling others. So he’s not going to give up his ability to direct what his Islamist drones are doing.

Also, he had nothing better to do. They always say where there‘s a will there’s a way, don’t they? He definitely had the will and he found his way.

Don’t you have people second-guessing what this guy was doing all along? I think the Obama minions have known where he was for some time now, and you’ve picked this time to do it. Right after he released his fake birth certificate. Obama has to boost his paltry ratings in the polls somehow, doesn’t he?

Obama is a narcissist and he’s always in campaign mode. Nothing he does is for America. It’s for him, him, HIM. Get used to it.

After killing bin Laden now he’s going on a “bowing” outreach frenzy to the Islamists. This sort of appeasement is something he would know something about. Appeasing the enemy comes natural to him.

I can’t wait to see this greatest show on earth!

Countless people have used WiFi devices such as Palm Pilots, iPOD Touch, Smartphones and Netbook computers to WIRELESSLY access hubs and upload email and download email and attachments. Countless people have ALSO used USB Flash (thumb) drives for OVER twenty (20) years to upload and download email from PCs, USB hubs and pretty much any device that has a USB connector.. This is nothing new about this to anyone except the MSM and a gullible reader public.

Just like everyone else, Osama bin Laden probably ate carrots and flicked on a light-switch. The Media would have people believe that doing what is common-place, is somehow magical.

Combine that with Obozo getting the media to interrupt Trump’s TV show, “The Apprentice” and who would not be suspicious of the entire “we got Osama” operation?

Sorry to be so cynical, but I have zero trust of the Obama regime.

Did anyone think of hiring a 16 year old hacker to figure that out? the government steals and waste all our national wealth and they never had a thought in their little brains about any of this?? I think we all should feel very foolish and very angry about this and what about all our dead and wounded all of their tomorrows for this crap.

So this is what our presses come to these days. Just regurgitating whatever someone from the government tells them to print. Without going through all the ridiculous story changes that they’ve had over the past two weeks just look at the picture of this incredible mastermind of this huge worldwide organization ran out of a multimillion dollar compound in Pakistan. The more they try to build this fable up the more ridiculous it becomes. I am just amazed that millions of Americans are falling for this ridiculous story that they continue to hand us to a willing and I might add bought and paid for press. The government continues to lie to us on so many aspects of the story that it becomes almost impossible to believe and yet millions of Americans actually believe that Osama bin Laden has been killed for the ninth time I might add. And now because Osama bin Laden has been killed for the ninth time we’re supposed to put up with TSA agents sticking their hands in the diapers of babies.

      b. hopefully, they are using this to flush the rats out of their holes and more into the open where they can be intercepted and dealt with; this also gives a chance to see where they run, and sweep up the support (arms, cash, intel, etc.) of Al Quaeda and other groups as well.

You have a point about taking care of the nation but this is important as those $$ spent on Pakistan spending we cannot afford are indirectly tied to this.

No one noticed b/c its like going to your friends house and using their internet to email someone! That is how this guy operated in the shadows, with the help of the Paki’s! Also he could hide his tracks on the net using proxy servers. His reported reaction and unpreparedness proves that the Paki’s knew he was there b/c he reacted in a manner of someone waiting to get a call to bugout that never came. He had phone #’s and money sewn in clothes and guns ready. As the guy who twittered what was gong on residents in the area were accustomed to military exercises. OBL probably thought the same since no calls or runners came to warn him to get out. He hears a lot of noise then a few shots, again no warning could be a prowler, thief etc that his ppl were reacting to… a lot of confusion in that compound again no warning from the Paki’s.

They knew he was there and probably gave him whatever he needed to stay in communication with AQ. Worst off US $’s were probably used down the food chain to assist!

I think that was called ‘sneaker net’.

But once again why is this news?
Osama might have cornered the market on Goat Net in Pakistan.

Many of you have forgotten Glenn’s warnings, but I have not. The release of this information is a coded message to those agents who monitor internet traffic to start tracking enemies of his regime in preparation “big event” Glenn spoke so often of.

How many of you have been as careful as OBL? Very few I imagine. Government agents have been given the word to start tracking anti-Obama “provocateurs”, getting real names and addresses through their association with Google, an organization in bed with the Government. They are looking at conservative websites like this one, and looking for keywords such as “gun” or “Obama” or “liar.”

Glenn warned us that the Governement will soon act to take absolute control of our country like Hitler did, and, I’m warning everyone here, just by posting here you are a suspect. Those FEMA camps? Maybe they weren’t used a year ago, but – hello – they are still there, and empty. Hmmm.

When the Government moves, they’ll move swiftly, taking your guns and rounding up the so called “patriots”, those who would oppose Obama’s absolute rule under a Marxist government.

Do or say what you want, but your every word is being monitored.

Al Qaeda and the Republicans wish this would all just go away.

Look at the picture of Bin Ladin watching TV. What is that box on the right of the TV with all cords coming out. Looks like DSL. Can anyone clarify that for me?

JZS, you should get time on Comedy Central. You would fit right in with the clowns they have performing there.

      ..
      Al Gore would be proud.

I just figured OBL took it next door to the army base and sent it.
