How Would a Rick Perry Candidacy Shake Up the GOP Race?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The still unsettled race for the Republican nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012 is getting more interesting.
After months of resisting calls to join the contest, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Friday he would consider it. That could reshape the GOP field, adding a sitting governor who has never lost an election.
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin also sent a jolt through the party with the announcement of a campaign-style bus tour along the East Coast, the latest possible contender to stand up since Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels announced last weekend that he would not run.
And former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is heading to New Hampshire next week, further stirring speculation that he will jump into the still-gelling field.
Perry, the longest serving governor in Texas history, would bring conservative bona fides, a proven fundraising record and a fresh voice. Even as Perry’s closest advisers say he has no intention of getting in the race, he has methodically raised his profile, fanning interest.
“I’m going to think about it,” Perry said Friday. “I think about a lot of things.”
That was enough to set off speculation he would jump into a campaign that lacks a clear front-runner. Social conservatives are still shopping for a candidate. Tea party activists want one of their own. Establishment Republicans remain divided on a choice.
Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is the closest to a favorite at this point. Like Giuliani, he ran for the nomination in 2008, losing out to Arizona Sen. John McCain.
Romney will formally kick off his campaign in the early primary state of New Hampshire next Thursday, the same day that Giuliani is now scheduled to headline a fundraiser for the state Republican Party and have lunch with several GOP activists.
Evangelicals who dominate the Iowa and South Carolina nominating contests are unlikely to back Romney or former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman; some call the two men’s shared Mormon faith a disqualifier.
Twice-divorced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, too, has problems, although Gingrich is quick to note he has been with his third wife for more than a decade.
Last month, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, fresh off a turn as the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, said he wouldn’t make a White House bid; that unlocked many of the donors for Perry.
It also opened the door for a sought-after Southern candidate.
While Gingrich is running his campaign from Georgia, he has lived near Washington for decades and is hardly the regional candidate Perry could be.
Mark McKinnon, a veteran political consultant who advised President George W. Bush’s campaigns, said of Perry, “The only real question is: Why wouldn’t he run?”
Still, Perry has for months insisted he had no interest in a White House bid.
“I don’t want to be the president of the United States,” he said flatly in November.
With those refusals, he took the reins of the Republican Governors Association for a second term as chairman earlier this year, a signal he was serious about sitting 2012 out; he told fellow Republicans he wouldn’t split his time between the RGA and a presidential campaign.
Since then, Perry’s refusal seems to have softened, albeit ever so slightly. Asked Tuesday whether he would rule out a run, Perry left the door open.
“I’ve got my focus on where it is supposed to be and that is the legislative session,” he told reporters. “Like I’ve said multiple times, I’m not going to get distracted from my work at hand, I’m not going to get distracted by that.”
The Texas legislative session ends Monday.
“The candidates that are running are not the candidates that people want,” said Ryan Hecker of the Houston Tea Party Society. “They’re looking for someone, almost wistfully.”
In recent years, Perry has made a sport out of bashing Washington. Most often, he assails the federal government for failing to secure the U.S. border with Mexico. In November, he published a book, “Fed Up!” In the book he describes the federal government as financially reckless and out of control and calls for a resurgence of state-based power.
Since he was re-elected to a third term, Perry has hopscotched across the country, making several trips to Washington and taking center stage at every conservative gathering of high-profile Republicans. From the Conservative Political Action Conference to a celebration commemorating what would have been Reagan’s 100th birthday, Perry has constantly brushed elbows with GOP heavyweights.
Texas Democrats sought to paint that travel as a disqualifier.
“Governor Perry spends so much time jetting across the country, playing celebrity and ignoring Texas priorities, that he already fits the mold of a typical Washington politician. If Perry finally announces his candidacy, he would fit right into a GOP field that’s already well-treaded by aspiring celebrities hawking books and reality TV shows,” Texas Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirsten Gray said.
While professing to be focused on the state Legislature, Perry is also commenting on national policy debates that have little relevance to Texas.
He issued a statement last week after Obama’s foreign policy speech.
“President Obama’s speech today continues a misguided policy of alienating our traditional allies, in this case Israel, one of our strongest partners in the war on terror,” Perry said, joining the field of likely GOP presidential contenders in criticizing Obama’s foreign policy.
In or out of the race, Perry is scheduled to address conservative voters next month at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, a gathering that has become a showcase of Republican presidential wannabes.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 10:06amWe need a candidtate who will seriously protect and defend the constitution, people, borders, ideals, values and interests of the United States. Any of the GOP candidtates is a better match to those specifications than this disloyal race baiting hate monger obama. From my perspective at this time, Rick Perry appears to be an ideal candidate. I don’t know everything I need to know about him but the people of Texas seem to be quit pleased with him and Texas is prosepering. I think that Perry has a genuine chance to crush barry obama should he run. I have no doubt he would be a better president than the usurping moron we have now who bows to foreign leaders and takes US taxpayer dollars and redistributes them to the muslim brotherhood in the name of democracy.

If JC himslf became a vs Obama candidate in 2012, the driveby press would have a field day of fabrication and slander.(for a while). Can’t you just hear Mathews now, slamming the Savior’s attire, footwear, hair lehgth, manner of speaking, lack of ivy league education, character of His followers, while discrediting His manner of birth and His reported miracles. What a sick bunch. How can they defend their spew to their families, let alone to any intelligent American? I wonder if the NBC talking heads get a direct paycheck from the WH or the DNC? Posted on May 28, 2011 at 9:44amRick Perry, a strong conservative with current working knowledge of running government, is exactly what the Republican Party needs and does not have! I believe the current “so-called” leaders of the GOP have had their day and need to simply GO AWAY. If not, they will repeat 2008 and win it for Obama once again. 2008 was evidenced by poor and divided support for McCain/Palin. Obama didn’t win, McCain/Palin lost. Obama already has a 3 year head start on this 2012 campaign the conservatives need to make a decision tell the liberal riff raff like Romney to simply go away.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 10:13amYour right Diann…we do need to know more about this man. But the fact that Obama dislikes him so much and vice a versa is a good start. The remark by excal saying he sided with justice on the TSA pats was not quite true. Perry still wants airport security to protect Americans and he didn’t want interruption in Texan flights. The people of Texas would have gone bonkers had their airports closed down. Perry made the right decision even though he and the rest of us hate those invasive downpats with a passion!

If the act itself weren’t despicable enough, The Blaze’s ignoring the story altogether sickens me!! They cover all kinds of trivia, while completely ignoring a vital issue. Go figure.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 1:17pmWho is “They”? The democrats not voting for a Texas Governor is an irrelevant issue.
The real question is, with Obama running unopposed, we know that a significant number of Dems will cross over in the primaries and vote in the Republican primary instead, trying to pick the candidate to run against Obama. That has been a big issue for a few election cycles now, and was likely the reason McCain was nominated. Only Dole had less appeal in my 47 year lifetime.Getting our candidate nominated is going to be a challenge in an open field with all the “help” we are going to get from the left.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 9:32amThe Governor knows the border issues, has kept his state solvent, and whether you like all he does or not, he is principled. Better then Romney, Huntsman for sure…Gingrich doesn’t have a chance and that goes for Palin (although I love her to death)… Everyone else that is in this mess, just hurts my head. So, although he has baggage, Perry might be the answer. Let’s get real. It is better to have half a conservative than all of a socialist. Think about it like driving… it’s a lot simpler to make a right turn then it is to make a U-turn.

That is two strikes against him in that one sentence. #1. He actually put Romney-care into action. #2. He still, to this day, has yet to say that his decision in Massachussetts was a BAD IDEA. And by now, its too late… there is far too much emphasis being put on that now, if he does it at this point it is to try and appease the voter base, not a heart-felt conviction.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 9:23amAfter eliminating candidates that speak out of both sides of their mouths, the field continues to shrink. I think Perry would be a breath of fresh air, as would West, Bachmann, Cain and Palin. I could see a combination of any two of these being strong competition in 2012, provided they don’t start sucking up to the media and the GOP regime. It is time to get the “good ole boys” out of office if they have become too comfortable in their seats. We need strong-minded representatives in Congress who have the best interest of the people at heart, not their buddies across the aisle, or on the same side of the aisle.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 9:53amHe’s the Gov. of my state – in my opinion, he’d be “good”…..he’s a solid Conservative, NOT a “globalist” or “Rino” – he is VERY much into being independent. He’s done a great job here – he feels about Obama & crew like all the “noBama” people, especially after Obama denied us help with our disastrous fires just bc he hates us. That should prove he’d be good…ha! The ones who said Obama hates Texas and Israel – right!!!! Along with most other people in the world that don’t agree with his ideology…which is a lot of people.
Report Post »The only thing that bothers me a little is that he is a bit of the “politician” sometimes; however, he’s not a “Rino”, very much against “big Govn’t”. He’s also very pro-life, etc.

It’s a secret! SHHH! Rick Perry doesn’t disclose what policies he negotiated and with what governments, all we know is he was an attendee at the Bilderberg Group meeting, where all sorts of impropriety are manufactured.
The question should be, what the hell was he doing there at all? He violated the Logan Act. So did George Pataki.
Perry and Pataki should renounce their citizenship and leave the United States forever.

Posted on May 28, 2011 at 1:14pmI’ve lived in Texas my entire life. We weren’t that keen on Perry even as Lt. Gov., but he seemed to be the best choice at the next election after Bush went to DC. Even in this last election, though, I didn’t want to vote for him because of his poor record. But between him or Bill White, it was a no brainer, so obviously I had to vote for Perry. But I am so pissed off about his record and I do not want to vote for him as president. He is wishy-washy in his ideals. He says one thing campaigning and does another once in office.
1. Trans Texas Corridor, using eminent domain while spouting off that he’s protecting property rights
2. Bilderberg group
3. I was so angry at the mandatory vaccine…don’t even get me started on that
I could go on……in my search for evidence that you, my fellow blazers, could read instead of just taking my word for it, I found this article. I hope you’ll come to understand what we true conservative Texans have come to know about Perry:

Also, this blogger makes some great points about Perry:

Yes, Perry has been at the helm while our state has felt the economic troubles less than most other states, and our taxes are still lower, and I wouldn’t live in any other state. BUT, make no mistake, he is a globalist. He only started getting tough on the borders during this last gubernatorial race. Before that, it was open bord

“Evangelicals who dominate the Iowa and South Carolina nominating contests are unlikely to back Romney or former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman; some call the two men’s shared Mormon faith a disqualifier.”
Do you realize how bigoted and ridiculous this makes you look? Mormons have no problems with Evangelicals, but Evangelicals have an awful lot of contempt for Mormons. Posted on May 28, 2011 at 11:56pmi don‘t know a thing about perry’s politics, but it seems to me that if Texas loves him so much as he was re-elected so many times, and he heads the Governor’s Association, then he should not run. I have said for many weeks now that the MOST important thing for America to win is the individual Governor’s races. The more strong Governors we have sitting in the most states, the stronger we are given the 10th Amendment against an out-of-control Federal Executive. In fact, if there are enough apposing Governors, then the will of ANY tyrannical Fed Exec is nullified.
That is why I am not sweating so much MY favorite (R) potential canidate, Mike Pence (and MY rep in congress, thank GOD for lucky geography) opting out of the National race in order to run for Indiana State Governor. He could potentially be a better fit here than as President. he admits that he lacks the Experience to be President, and wants to govern at an executive level. God bless him.
Governor Mitch Daniels, however, has me scratching my head, along with many in the potential field choosing not to run.

Even if it means Ron Paul running in a third party stripping half the conservative vote away from the Rino Republican nomination, allowi g BO to win, so be it. I will not vote for any Rino. Progressive Right will not win, we will defect from you until the progressive right is no more.
The Progressive right is going to be brought down, even if Obama wins in the process. The Progressive right needs to join the progressive left and create their own lying hating party instead of lying and saying their conservative when they are not just to be elected.
Ron Paul is a Constitutionalist and the only reason anyone would have a problem with him is because that person will not let some progressive view they hold go. Once a person views constitutionally, there is no choice but Ron Paul….
