Huckabee Slams Obama‘s DOMA Decision as ’Indefensible’

Potential 2012 GOP presidential challenger Mike Huckabee denounced the Obama administration’s decision to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) against court challenges Wednesday, calling the move “indefensible.”

Huckabee Slams Obamas DOMA Decision as Indefensible

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (AP)

“I’m deeply disappointed,” Huckabee said. “[The Obama administration is] clearly out of sync with the public.”

Thirty-three states have passed ballot initiatives declaring that marriage should be a covenant between a man and a woman, he noted. “When the voters are so overwhelmingly [supportive of DOMA] what does the president believe he knows that citizens in all these other states don’t?” Huckabee said.

DOMA, which was signed into law in 1996 by then-President Bill Clinton, prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. But Attorney General Eric Holder declared Wednesday that the administration considers DOMA unconstitutional and would no longer support it.

“It doesn’t surprise me, but it disappoints me,” the former Arkansas governor told Politico. Obama has sent a “pretty consistent message” to social conservatives, he added.

While praising President Obama for being a “role model as both a husband and a father,” the Fox News host said he was concerned what kind of negative ramifications abandoning the law may have on American families.

“He’s been a good husband and a good father,” Huckabee said. “Unfortunately, his policies are not necessarily conducive to helping other people, in their own families, to be good husbands and good fathers.”

The former governor also stressed that DOMA is a law with important economic consequences. “Two-thirds of the poverty in this country would be eliminated if the mothers of the children were married to the fathers,” he said. “There is a quantified impact of broken families,” he added. “[There is a] $300 billion ‘dad deficit’ in America every year…that’s the amount of money that we spend as taxpayers to pick up the pieces because dads are derelict in their duties.”

Huckabee was in Washington, D.C. Wednesday promoting his new book, “A Simple Government,” which argues that traditional families help promote national economic stability.

Isn’t an admission by the attorney general that he is not going to defend a current law in itself a violation of his oath of office and subject to removal. 2012 will be the year the marxists leave Washington.

Holder won’t preserve voter rights unless they are black ie. the black panthers, thinks obammycare IS constitutional and this DOMA law isn’t? Is there anybody still out there doesn’t think this a marxist adminstration

When are you folks going to learn Obama takes no stand that does not benefit him politically. He thinks he will need the gays to support him in 2012 if he is to get reelected. Otherwise, he would thumb his nose at them. I personally do not think he will be reelected but I’m not able to see into the future.

A vote for Obama in 2012 is a vote against freedom and free enterprise and a vote for the destruction of the United States of America.

Obama said what he had to say along with many other campaign positions and promises that he has since repudiated once elected. The reversals are so numerous they would be too many to list here. He has always been a wolf in sheep’s clothing – pretending to be what he is not to gain power.

Huckabee reminds me of how John McCain ran his 2008 campaign when McCain promoted Obama more than himself. Huckabee is fence sitting, lackadaisical, or silent about a lot of Obama’s bad decisions or even lack of decision making. If he does criticize Obama, he ends up backing down or down playing it later either by kissing up to Obama or by proxy Obama’s wife. Nauseating.

Hucabee is a 3 trick plastic pony – 1) The Fair Tax and 2) being anti-gay marriage 3) anti-abortion. And the ONLY TIME he gets passionate and/or seriously critical of Obama is when gay marriage or abortion is brought up.

I no longer take Huckabee seriously and don’t even watch his show any more. The image of Huckabee’s face plastered on one or the other Obama behind is a little too graphic for me.

Well yesterday, Obummer was “struggling” with how he felt about gay marriage…today he’s “for” it. Well, the Executive Branch doesn’t decide the constitutionality of laws, the Supreme Court does.
So much for “of the people, by the people, and for the people!”

It is Mr. Huckabee who is out of sync with the public. While it is true that a majority still opposes gay marriage, it is a steadily decreasing majority, and the minority in favor is steadily growing. This anti same-sex marriage hooey is now an issue that only the old hacks at the end of their political careers want to exploit. Anyone near the beginning of their careers does not want to be caught on the wrong side of history in the future when same-sex marriage is almost universally accepted as a right and their opponents will be able to dredge up their past opposition to humiliate them.

Chet i think the matter at hand has more to do with Holder and the Obama Admin taking the liberty to announce something as unconstitutional without it having been deemed so by S.C.O.T.U.S. While I personally agree that these old school social issues are becoming increasingly tedious to deal with in a time where the only thing that should matter at all is our economy and jobs, it‘s still a complete miscarriage of justice in it’s entirety for POTUS to bypass SCOTUS and make any declaration of the sort. They are clearly overstepping their authority and are outright ignoring the law and all the protocols regarding the “constitutionality” of ANY issue. It is TYRANNY.

TehFreedomist: “Old school issues”, if perhaps you take an historical approach to understanding these “issues” they were not issues at the time when our country was being established. Our country has slowly deteriorated because our moral compass has done so first. It really all goes hand in hand, one issue cannot be seperated from the other when it comes to our economy.

@ HADASSAH i see you got stuck on a side-note and missed the point. That’s OK. As far as the arguments about the social issues go, i AM sick of seeing those issues being sticking points for our politicians to readily use to distract from the real problems, i.e. MONEY. All of the sudden someone gets elected because they are pro-life but it never mattered if they weren’t pro-business or pro fiscally responsible. Lets save the framework of the country’s lifeblood, the economy, and argue the social issues later. Don’t allow them to get elected on stupid stuff. We need responsible adults in office, not just someone who claims to be the moral authority. Now. Hopefully you read everything i wrote and didn’t just see “old school issues” and get offended about that. What i said was right on in regards to the overreach of the POTUS and friends and their lawlessness about DOMA. Stay focused on the issue at hand please. This isn’t about abortion. It’s not about gay marriage. It’s about the white house directly and unilaterally deciding what IS or IS NOT constitutional. They are BREAKING THE LAW AND TRAMPLING THE CONSTITUTION. If you lose that, your opinions about abortion will be IRRELEVANT…

The law will remain in effect until it is overturned by the courts. All the President has done is decide that the Justice Department’s lawyers have better things to do than waste time defending a law that was passed as a stunt by Congressmen who knew it was unconstitutional when they voted for it.
