HuffPo Blogger Explains Why Wisconsin Gov. Walker Is a…Shallow Christian

For those of you who thought that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker was taking the unions on to put his state on a fiscally solvent path–you’re wrong! He‘s actually causing all of this trouble because he’s a bad Christian. Or so says Diana Butler Bass, pictured below.
Bass is the liberal Christian author of “A Marxist’s People’s History of Christianity: The Other Side of the Story.” She writes:
Unlike the Roman Catholics and traditional Protestants who have spoken on behalf of the laborers, Walker has no spiritual “check” on him, no authority other than the ones he hears in his own head, and no moral culpability in this situation. He’s the good Christian soldier, just following God’s lead.
And this is why Scott Walker’s religion is actually dangerous in the public square. Because it lacks the ability to compromise, it is profoundly anti-democratic. Many faith traditions actually possess deep spiritual resources that allow them to participate in pluralistic, democratic, and creative political change. But those sort of traditions tend emphasize the love of God and neighbor over strict obedience to an unyielding Father God. Despite anything Scott Walker might say, the confident dictum of the old hymn, “Trust and Obey” is not the best way to govern a state.
She continues, “Other than David Koch (fake or otherwise), Walker is listening to One Person and One Person only: Jesus speaking directly to him. God, evidently, has directed him on his current path.” Evidently? What evidence? Maybe if God is taking the form of excel spreadsheets that spell out billions of dollars of deficits in the state, then Bass is on to something. But to paint Gov. Walker as a religious fundamentalist is otherwise absurd.
Mark D. Tooley, writing yesterday at Front Page Magazine, delivers a thorough rebuttal of Bass’ screed in one sentence:
Governor Walker has cited fiscal reality, not religion, for his stance with Wisconsin’s government unions.
Tooley points out that many other Christian leaders in Wisconsin are asking the governor to reconsider his cost-cutting legislation in the name of “compassion.” But there’s another side to this story too. Over the past several days, I’ve heard Gov. Chris Christie, Rep. Eric Cantor, and Rep. Paul Ryan, and Senator Marco Rubio deliver talks about the very issues that Scott Walker is facing in Wisconsin–namely, the unfunded entitlements that will bankrupt our states, if not our country. These politicians were uniform in their belief that if we do not make minor reforms to these entitlements, as Scott Walker is proposing in Wisconsin, that they will not exist period in a few short years. Reforming them now means that retirees will continue to receive their pension checks, rather than the grim alternative. How’s that for compassion?
(hat tip Front Page).

Even though we are overwhelmingly against everything she wrote and for that matter stands for period, the comments here are more plentiful and well thought out. They definitely hate Walker and ANYONE who even tries to defend him even just a little. Most based on the unionistas lies and less on a principled argument of any sort. There is no such thing as a “Liberal” Christian.
There is absolutely positively no such thing as a liberal Christian

Liberals hate religion. They just use it as a political weapon when it’s convenient. Liberals never speak of Christ or the Bible unless they’re using it as a weapon of judgement. This who debate is about money, not being a good person. These greedy teachers are throwing a hissy fit and running away from their job. They’re the bad people. Posted on March 5, 2011 at 2:47pmSomeone needs to remind Ms Bass that we don‘t live in a Democracy so it is entirely fitting that Scott Walker’s belief‘s and actions are ’anti-Democratic’. We are a representative republic and, as such, our leaders are elected to serve the interests of all citizens, not just those of labor. Labor (unionized) represents only a small fraction of the American work force and should have no better wages and benefits than any other segment of the work force. Unions are responsible for driving manufacturing off shore where companies can maintain enough margin to survive and still be competitive in the world marketplace. Government employees should not be permitted to unionize since there is no ‘adversarial relationship’ with the employer, which is the taxpayer in every case. Government unions bargaining is nothing but legalized extortion and should be discontinued immediately. If union workers don’t like that, they are free to work elsewhere just like the rest of us.

Therefor, it’s okay to use every trick in the book and to call us Nazis and the like. Lying, for them, is okay because they think we’re all liars and every other form of evil, so it’s fighting fire with fire, so to speak.
The ends do justify the means, because their ends are noble in their minds. Because they see us as irredeemable, we are to be destroyed and whatever it takes is justifiable.
The only sin in a liberal’s mind is that no one can be liberal enough.

Why are Van Jones and Michael Moore using Christian language? They know that many Christians are conservatives, for the obvious reason that moral balance is absent on the Left. There is no yin to the yang of unrelenting calls for more laxity in our relations with all forms of aberration and abomination.
All actions have effects on all the people that are affected. This is obviously tautological, but leftists speak as if they can achieve only the consequences they want–here, keeping the gravy train rolling–without the consequences they don’t want–here, State and then national bankruptcy, and the cessation of ALL services and the “innovation” of generalized poverty, and then necessary tyranny.
Try throwing a stone into water and only getting ripples on one side. I can’t do it. Neither can they.
If they are leftists, and they are speaking, they are trying to trick you. You may not always be able to see how, but particularly if they are trying to speak the language of their sworn enemies, beware Greeks bearing gifts, particularly if they are large wooden horses.

This is laudable and praiseworthy. The leftists have redefined compassion as the coersive force of government confiscating wealth and redistributing it to their favored constituencies — the “giver” feels robbed and resentful and the recipients either are made dependent or become indebted in some way to their political benefactors. This is dispicable and worthy of condemnation. When evil is repackaged as good, we must challenge it.

When he went to the hill when they were ramming ObamaCare thru he asked one of the Dems what would they do the 11th year if it takes 10 years of revenue to pay for 6 yrs of care. He replied, “I’m 80!” (I’ll be gone). So they just don’t care….just like the Union thugs and Union members rioting. If Union members get the vote of cutting pay and keeping jobs the majority will vote NOT TO CUT….because they DON’T CARE about those under them. They try to make you think its about equality – IT’S NOT!!!

Posted on March 5, 2011 at 6:53pmJust another idiot with a laptop. It is time to take action against these entitlement persons who always believe the government, who they are part of and pay for, needs compassion in order to balance a budget. What she doesn’t understand is I have numerous bills and a mortgage to pay for, why doesn’t the compassionate government just pay these off for me so I can just sit around and blog.

Posted on March 5, 2011 at 8:33pm@ VERYSENIOR…….Hahahhahaha The beatitudes are NOT Luke chapter 5. Be careful if you are going to use Scripture. It is similar to using a gun. If you don‘t use a gun very much and aren’t very careful it is easy to shoot yourself. Obviously you have exposed your lack of knowledge of scripture so maybe you be wiser to remain quite on this issue.
Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. Proverbs

Posted on March 6, 2011 at 12:09amWATCHTHEOTHERHAND – My sincere apologies – I said Luke 5. I will correct that to Mathey 5.
However, the Beatitudes STILL apply – I guess with the exception of folks like governor Walker. I could also quote from a couple of books that Christians of the Middle Ages have REFUSED to allow to be included in that book – but you wouldn’t believe me anyway!
Have a nice night!

Posted on March 6, 2011 at 3:10amI find it interesting she both denounces and renounces faith all in one. As though Christianity is good so long as one is not obligated to “obey god” as though anyone who is like Walker is a nut without calling him a nut. Clever, just sad knowing how many people will be duped into that cyclical and shallow reasoning and completely forget the real story, that there are actual numbers, deficits, taxes, and a government to run.

Actually, I’m glad “snowleopard” did not remain “QUIET” and spoke out, albeit citing the wrong Gospel and apologized and corrected it below you to Matthew 5! As you state in your misspelling: She is QUITE a lady! Maybe more than one should check their words. . .

Posted on March 6, 2011 at 10:15amMaybe I should stay “quite,” I referenced snowleopard when I meant to reference veryseniorcitizen–intent of post still applies.
Passion, a “controlling” thing!

Posted on March 6, 2011 at 3:54pm@ HILLBILLYINNY…….what you posted doesn’t make much sense because you meant VERYSENIOR rather than SNOWLEOPARD and VERYSENIOR misspelled Matthew not me !!!!! The beatitudes do not teach what you think they do in regard to this issue. And remember if I wanted to use an incorrect exegesis I could use the beatitudes against you and VERYSENIOR and ask about “judge not lest ye be judged” in regard to this story. But that would be an incorrect application of that teaching to this story and I would be guilty of the same faulty application as you both were. That is what VERYSENIOR has done and it is erroneous as to the teaching of Christ on the sermon on the Mount !!!!!!! I would love to see your scriptural reference and exegesis of the scripture as to how this story would be correct !!!!!

Posted on March 6, 2011 at 4:22pm@ HILLBILLY….there is QUITE a difference between a typo that happens on almost every post and the incorrect reference that was given. Please QUIT trying to EQUATE the two. And there is a time where all of us should have probably been QUIET rather than speak on something we really didn’t know about. See a typo is what VERYSENIOR did with Matthew and I did not correct it. But an incorrect reference was not a typo it was just wrong.

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 12:19amThe lefty author does of course explain in her writings that Scott is the son of a preacher from the small town of Delavan WI… or did she conveniently leave out that detail?
Where do these unhinged people come up with this garbage?
