HuffPo: ‘Rally Attendance OBLITERATES Turnout To Glenn Beck Rally’

Even allowing for an editorial “take” on an event, doesn’t it seem kind of high-school silly to run a headline like this:

HuffPo: Rally Attendance OBLITERATES Turnout To Glenn Beck Rally

The Huffington Post conclusion is based on one key comparison:

According to CBS News, 215,000 people showed up for the rally on Saturday. By comparison, CBS estimated that 87,000 — just 40% of the Sanity Rally estimation — attended Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally in August.

So it all comes back to CBS News and the same company they used to estimate the crowd size on 8/28 — AirPhotosLive.com.  The numbers are all pretty clear to them:

An estimated 215,000 people attended a rally organized by Comedy Central talk show hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert Saturday in Washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News.

The company AirPhotosLive.com based the attendance at the “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” on aerial pictures it took over the rally, which took place on the Mall in Washington. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 10 percent.

AirPhotosLive.com

CBS News does acknowledge that their estimate of the 8/28 rally was controversial.  At the time they posted a vigorous defense of their methodology and in their current post they re-link to it.

In order to bring more clarity to the crowd estimation process, Hotsheet asked Curt Westergard, the president of AirPhotosLive.com, to discuss his methods. Westergard’s company has done aerial imaging for the U.S. border patrol, the Department of Homeland Security, companies building skyscrapers and cell phone companies trying to decide where to build their towers, among others.

“People hire us to get a really detailed view of what’s on the ground,” he said.

The company sometimes uses these images for crowd estimates, both generating its own estimates and partnering with Professor Stephen Doig of Arizona State University, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and crowd estimate expert, to come up with figures. For President Obama’s inauguration last year, the company worked with Doig and GeoEye satellite data to generate a crowd estimate on behalf of CNN that was cited by the Associated Press and other news outlets.

To calculate attendance at the Beck rally, AirPhotosLive.com used what is called a surveillance aerostat balloon to take pictures from both above the event and closer to the ground. In the video above, which was provided by the company, you can see some of the images used to come up with a figure.

The balloon, Westergard said, gave the company the capacity to move up and down, allowing it to photograph people who were standing beneath trees in addition to taking photos from high above.

Mediate is looking at the comparisons between the two rallies.  They note what Glynnis MacNicol wrote about the 8/28 assessments:

Thus far, the big question following yesterday’s event appears to be how many people attended. Answer from the ground: a lot. Interestingly CBS is estimating the crowd at 87,000. NBC quoted the National Parks service which put it at 300,000. Based solely on my perspective from the ground and the fact I was in Washington for the Inauguration I would err on the side of NBC and the National Parks. But the discrepancy begs the question: how do you lose 200,000 people?

I am confused, by the way, over the National Parks Service being credited with crowd estimations.  They don’t do it anymore, right? Except “unofficially” I guess.  The Huffington Post was happy to highlight such an estimation that came via a Tweet from Brian Stelter of The New York Times:

HuffPo: Rally Attendance OBLITERATES Turnout To Glenn Beck RallySo if the National Parks Service “unofficial” estimate of over 200,000 for the “Sanity” rally was good enough for The Huffington Post, why wasn’t the National Parks Service “unofficial” estimate of 300,000 for  Beck’s “Honor” rally not a fair comparison too?  Guess it might change the obliteration.

Jim of Silver Spring, Md., took this picture for The Blaze from the top of the Washington Monument (Laus Deo) as the “Sanity” rally kicked off:

HuffPo: Rally Attendance OBLITERATES Turnout To Glenn Beck Rally

GatewayPundit has been highlighting a photo study done by KeyPro:

HuffPo: Rally Attendance OBLITERATES Turnout To Glenn Beck Rally

Notice at the bottom the “scale” perspective ovals.  It would be important to note that while they may be a helpful sense of geography — we must keep in mind that from the Washington Monument view the “Sanity” rally was further away.

Stewart himself made a clear point on the “size matters” front:

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert threw a big party and lots of people came.  That’s great.  I watched the entire broadcast.  I enjoyed some of the non-fatwa endorsing music. I laughed a couple of times.  All in all I thought it tended toward tedium. But that’s just me.

I’m more amazed at the palpable need by the folks at HuffPo to pull out the “OBLITERATES” line.   Seems desperate.  Both rallies were large, successful experiments in American democracy. Why not just say that?  But I bet they’ll stay in the full-spin zone.

HuffPo cites a range of estimations for the “Sanity” rally — from 200,000-250,000. That’s probably about right. But it beggars credulity to pretend that the “Restoring Honor” rally was anything less than that.  Did Beck draw twice the Stewart crowd? Maybe.  I’ll settle for an estimation of 350,000! But, maybe Colby Hall at Mediate is right — call it a tie:

NPR’s Dina Temple-Raston reported yesterday that, having attended both, she thought that the Stewart rally was slightly larger than the Beck rally. The accepted rough estimate that emerged for the attendance at the Beck rally was roughly 200,000 (give or take.) And I suspect that the accepted rough estimate for attendance at the Jon Stewart rally will likely be the same.

I suggest that we just call it a tie?

In the end, Stewart is wrong.  It’s not just size and color that matter here.  It’s the content of the message and the kind of traction it finds in the citizenship.  Let’s watch and bear witness.

Exit question — how are the One Nation rally organizers feeling after watching Stewart and company dwarf their efforts without much help from an armada of unions?

Remember this picture?

The numbers game is silly. But this is how our society measures “success,” isn’t it?

I’d say the success was in the content–and in that case, IMO, there was absolutely no comparison.

8/28 was serious and in a much higher class than this other rally–again IMO. To compare one to the other to me is like trying to compare low-grade dog food to Filet Mignon. 8/28 was definitely the steak and will stand on its own merits.

It will also stand as being 3 TIMES LARGER than the Stewart rally. I looked close at the pictures of both rallys and placed the boundaries for each, went to Google Earth and verified the street boundaries where the people were and even deducted the space for the water in two areas and Becks crowd covered 1.8 Sq. miles while Stewarts crowd covered .6 sq mile. That maked Becks crowd 3 times larger than Stewarts. Its simple Science and Math. Prove me wrong. Try please. God I love America!

What they seem to forget is the thousands of other rally’s that were being held across the country on the same day. I agree it is the message that is most important. Stewart’s comedy show was just that. Becks message was that of patriotism and love of country. At some point we as a people either must come together to Unite in order to have a more perfect Union. But, if the left continues to trash the Constitution then at some point the divide will become to great .

Exactly, you don‘t know if it’s peak attendance or people filing in. I arrived 2 hours late to the 8/28 rally because of the 1/4 mile line of 8/28 ralliers still at the Vienna Metro station when the Rally was starting at the Lincoln Memorial. There were thousands at the station uncounted. Then as we finally found another station and made it to DC, there were already ralliers leaving. My point is, it’s impossible to get a close approximation of the true amount of people that attended. At the very least, get a picture of the maximum that are on site and put a time stamp on it.

Typical. Right wingers ignore the scientific study for the unqualified guess. It’s why you tolerate Bachmann saying a million people showed. Faith-based crowd estimates. It fits the general pattern of anti-science know-nothingism.

The company involved makes their livelihood from making accurate assessments, so if they look incompetent or worse in terms of estimating crowd sizes, they make less money. I would trust their estimates more than an unqualified group that has no incentive to make an accurate assessment. You do not even know whether the same people made the two estimates within the gov’t Parks and Rec office. Talk about listening only to the estimates you want, you guys are as bad as Huff Po. If you hadn’t beat this time you would keep on until you did. So whether you beat the numbers or not it really doesn’t make any difference. You have to have two different rallies trying to beat each other. This just shows that you can’t work with us, but you have to beat us. So who’s really trying to make a statement. We were trying to tell you that we are tired of corrupt government. All you were trying to do is beat us. So who is the real loser?

Don’t you understand Beck WAS obliterated. You have to add the two rallies together, see? What a joke! I second the poster who said imagine how many more would have shown up at Restoring Honor if the trip were paid for by their boss, et al.

Obvioulsy there were A LOT of people at the “Sanity” rally. The 2nd picture from the top shows that.

But again—-So what? Is there some kind of comptetition going on about who can get the bigger rally?
I mean, I guess there is, but it wasn‘t Becks’ doing. He just happened to have a rally. The other 2 rallys were copy cats. And to think yesterday’s rally was anything but a ploy is just non sense. They were mostly young people with nothing to do but be entertained by a couple of comedians and musicians, many of which (the crowd that is) were smokin dope.
So all this was was a hippy concert masquerading as a political movement.

Colbert and Stewart tell us they don’t want partisanship and then out of the other side of their mouths say but this is who we voted for… make no mistake they both voted and will vote Democrat for Obama again…

partisanship is what WE want and need and that IS why we have “different parties”.

For Colbert and Stewart to tell us to stop acting like they do each and every night is
      Hypocrisy…..

I got to wondering just how many people were at the gathering this weekend and the 8-28 gathering I attended so I looked at the pictures carefully and went to Google Earth. I located the street boundaries and measured using the Google Earth ruler. I even took into account for the water in the reflecting pool and another body of water north of that where no people could stand. The rough calculations were based on

The 8-28 rally being boundaried by Constitution Ave North, Independance Ave South, 17 th st East and 23 rd St West. Equallying 1.8 Sq. Mile.

The 10-30 rally being boundaried by Madison St North, Jefferson St South, 3 rd St East, and 7 th St West. Equallying .6 Square Mile.

That makes the count Three to one in favor of the 8-28 rally. Just using modern internet ways. Thanks Google Earth.

Another observation. The Lincoln Memorial has a 230 ft. front and the Capitol Bldg. has a 720 Ft front. That makes the Capitol a little over 3 times larger accross than the Lincoln Memorial . The comparison pictures shows the Capitol 5 times larger than the Lincoln Memorial, thus making the crowd in the 10-30 gathering look at least 40% bigger if you are going to compare pictorially the picture of the Stewart crowd needs to be shrunk 40% or the Beck picture needs to be enlargef 40%. Using Google Earth and the Google Ruler. Thanks Google Earth. Beck Rules. God I love America!

honestly, if this rally was the same size as Honor than good on em. The huff post trying to make it a big deal about crowd size just goes directly against what stewart was talking about he wanted it to mean.

So what if Stewart’s rally photo was farther away? Using Trigonometry and the average height of a human being… or known values for heights of the buildinggs in the pictures, we could make the 2 pictures to scale and therefore comparable to one another in other words, compare apples to apples. The fact that it was not done in exactly the same place increases the margin of error, however. As for the entity with the 10% margin of error, if they estimated a 500k group at 87k, that in itself shows that their own margin of error is way more than 10%. Well over 500% plus their 10% margin is more like it. How could ANYONE use them for ANY type of estimates? They must be the ones who do the taxes for PeaBo and his staff and have been trained in math by the same folks that said a government run healthcare systems will save us money, illegal immigration is necessary for our food prices, etc. “HUFFPO OBLITERATES ITS OWN REPUTATION” should be their daily headline.

Beck’s rally was larger. No contest. But I don’t think the rallies had the same purpose. Stewart’s was more of an entertainment thing and it got a large crowd for that type of show.

I was at both rallies and Stewart’s was at least triple. Also, Jesus appeared to a group of us in the crowd and did some really cool card tricks.

The Stewart rally caused over 300,000 more trips on the Metro than the Beck rally even though they were both on days that have historically similar ridership.

Plus look at the crowd density in the HQ photos on the web and you can tell their are more people on 10/30.

The picture from the top of the Washington monument was taken at the beginning of the rally. People were still arriving well after the rally started. My friend who was sitting above the crowds on top of an ambulance fairly far back said she couldn’t even see the end of the crowd in the Washington monument direction and by the end of the rally I heard people saying that the crowd stretched all the way to the Washington monument, I can’t say for sure if they did because it was hard to see very far in any direction from ground level. So, if you‘re basing you’re opinion off of the picture from the top of the Washington monument, you should know that a lot more people showed up after it was taken.

The only thing of real importance is the that One Nation 10-02-10 Rally came in LAST since apparently size matters. It’s good to see that their are more sane and patriotic people than there are communist and progressives. I bet half of the people attending the “Sanity” rally were just there to have a good time and probably could care less if it was political or not. I watched some of it. I wasn’t intimidated by it and thought it was funny especially the political signs.
Huffpo can say whatever they want. We all know how they like to twist things around. Spooky Dude knows that the best. He really needs to spend a lot more than the millions he has already dished out. Alot of us have woken up. You may have to spend billions now Spooky Dude. HHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

So what, One Rally was about a telavangalist preaching too his flock. { i.e. BECK} and People whom arent right wing Born again christians, but normal everyday Americans showing their American pride and the view that you dont have to be one sided in your thinking. and follow beck and other tea party, well Republicans embarrassed to call themselves that anymore after Bush’s failed 8 years. See thats why Democrats have, blue dogs, conservative, and progressive wings of our party. all you have is far right and further right. We need to work together to solve this countries problems, and from day one of this presidents term YOUR RepublcanT party has attempted to block everything in hopes of Normal Americans remembering its your party that caused this mess to begin with. So stop the partisianship and help the democrats solve the problems and not let our great country turn into a 3rd world country just so you can be in power again. Try that and maybe we can all get along.

People are missing the important information here. Even if they had a few more poeple a few less or whatever. Glenn Beck did his own advertising, his own PR and everything else with his team. This restoring rally had Oprah Winfry, 2 big name Comedians, the entire Libral Media and anyone else on the left all advertising for it. Oprah offered free rides to all the viewers at the studio. Glenn Beck did a much better job of getting people to come then all of the media combined.
