Hundreds Gather in Missouri Town to Block Westboro Baptist Protest at Soldier’s Funeral

You may recall that the Supreme Court recently heard arguments in a case involving the Westboro Baptist Church which often turns up to protest at the funerals of U.S. soldiers. Some how this ties into their opposition to gays.
At the time, Glenn Beck and Pat Gray engaged in spirited radio debate on the merits of the case. You can review that here.
Glenn argued that free speech rights militate that Westboro Baptist have the right to demonstrate regardless of how despicable their tactics. Glenn suggested that citizens take up action to counter-protest Westboro Baptist. There may be no direct connection to Glenn’s suggestion — but this weekend that is exactly what happened.
People in Weston, Missouri banded together on Saturday. They wanted to protect loved ones who were saying goodbye to a fallen soldier. They stood up to members of the Westboro Baptist Church who planned to protest at Sgt. First Class C.J. Sadell’s funeral.
Sadell died October 24 from injuries he suffered in a surprise attack in Afghanistan.
On Saturday, there was quite a turnout of people who wanted to keep the protesters away from the funeral.“I’d say probably half the people in Weston are here,” said Eric Moser, Marine Corp veteran.
Weston has less than 2,000 residents, but hundreds of people showed up to support the family of First Sgt. Sadell.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 5:19amPeaceful and bonding together to protect the memory and the families of our soldiers. Amen. I hope we see more of this across the country. Free speech is what it is and we have to have that and we can’t stop it for bad taste, but what this loving town did is a far greater use of free speech and one that we should all honor. Thank you, Weston.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 5:08amThis story makes me proud to be an American. Bless the people of Weston for showing the true American spirit. Instead of becoming violent or hateful, these people used the same freedoms given to the malicious protesters to shut them down, using only their true strength of spirit and honor.
I truly hope this inspires more people to do the same for other military families- and to show up in peaceful numbers to protest outside the church responsible for each future attempt.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 4:11amHmm, I was just remembering the bitter border clashes between Kansas and Missouri in the Civil War era. Although that was a long time ago, Missouri doesn’t take kindly to these Topeka, Kansans coming in, lecturing the good folks on what’s right and wrong, especially since they are disrespecting noble, military, loved ones who gave all. One can only wonder why good Kansans don’t stand up and protest the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas. It’s pretty much a no-brainer. These people are coming on to the home turf where Jesse James used to roam. Don’t they know the spirit of freedom that still lives in that land?

Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA November 11, 2010 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
WBC will picket the Veteran‘s Day Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to remind this nation that God is Doomed america’s enemy and He himself fights against you. Because this nation has raised her clenched fist to God and said “We hate instruction. No! We will not obey!,” He curses you by killing your young men in their prime. Instead of worshipping their dead corpses, you ought to turn and repent and worship your God. He alone has the power to tear you into pieces and cast you into Hell forever.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 2:57pmThank you. Good information. We’re too far away to do anything, but the military families and the funeral directors need to know that there is some recourse. And it’s important to call the local news stations, too, so that it gets coverage. Right now, Phelps & Company are the ones making the news, so if the Patriot Riders or anyone else is there to honor a fallen soldier, it’s very important to make sure it gets in the news. The more that people participate in this, the stronger the message will be. I don’t think we can stop them from protesting, but we sure can honor the families of our fallen by doing what the citizens of Weston, MS and the surrounding communities did.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 3:21amIndeed thanks to the folks of Weston, I have heard on a radio account that one family came from australia to support those blocking out the Westboro Baptists.
This action shows the true differences between those who love peace and respect the family of a fallen soldier; and those on the other hand who are false keepers of Christianity – preaching of hate and anger instead of loving the people while showing your ideals and values by your life.
A handful of bad examples can destroy much good others do or have done.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 12:56pmThanks Weston for your support of the family of Sgt.Sadell’s family as they payed their last respects to their loved one who courageously and honorably gave his life for his country. I’ve been a Texas Baptist minister for almost 40 years and I have never seen anything or anyone as desgraceful as Westboro Baptist Church. Protesting at the funerals of our fallen heroes is not a part of any Baptist church ministry. To me it’s un-Christian and un-American. I’m also a USMC Vietnam War veteran that is personally offended at such disrespectful conduct carried out under the banner and name Baptist. I support the basic constitutional right of every American to pratice his or her freedom of speech, but the protests at funerals aren’t actions of freedom of speech. It’s desrespectful harasment and infringement upon the civil rights of the families and friends of the deceased and complete lack of common decency. What’s surprising to me is, until now, none of the protesters have been physically harmed or killed. Shame on you Westboro Baptist Church, you‘re supposed to be Christ’s witnesses of God’s love and not perpetrators of hate.
