Muslims Pray in Manhattan to Protest NYPD for Surveillance

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Hundreds of Muslims prayed in a lower Manhattan park and marched to New York Police headquarters Friday to protest a decade of police infiltrating mosques and spying on Muslim neighborhoods.

Bundled in winter clothes, men and women knelt as the call to prayer echoed off the cold stone of government buildings.

“Being Muslim does not negate our nationality,” Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid told the crowd of about 500 gathered in Foley Square, not far from City Hall and local courthouses. “We are unapologetically Muslim and uncompromisingly American.”

The demonstration was smaller and more subdued than the Occupy Wall Street protests that led to clashes with police and made headlines worldwide. Police wore windbreakers, not riot gear, and protesters called for improved relations with police.

“We want for you to respect us,” Abdur-Rashid said, “and we will respect you.”

It was the first organized opposition to the NYPD’s intelligence tactics since an Associated Press investigation revealed widespread spying programs that documented every aspect of Muslim life in New York. Police infiltrated mosques and student groups. Plainclothes officers catalogued Middle Eastern restaurants and their clientele. Analysts built databases on Arab cab drivers and monitored Muslims who changed their names.

“Had this been happening to any other religious group, all of America would be outraged,” said Daoud Ibraheem, 73, a retired graphic artist from Brooklyn.

Following the prayer service, the Muslims – joined by about 50 Occupy Wall Street demonstrators – crowded the sidewalk for the short walk to the large police headquarters building known as One Police Plaza. They stayed only briefly, chanting for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly’s ouster, before returning to Foley Square.

Protesters carried signs that said “NYPD Watches Us. Who Watches NYPD?” A dozen or so uniformed police officers monitored the demonstration and followed the march, but there were no clashes between protesters and police

At an unrelated news conference Friday, Kelly told reporters that he “categorically” denied the idea that the NYPD was spying.

Kelly and his intelligence chief, David Cohen, have transformed the NYPD into one of the nation’s most aggressive domestic intelligence agencies. It operates far outside the city borders and its manpower and budget give it capabilities that even the federal government does not have. NYPD analysts were among the first to study the thorny question of how people are radicalized.

Kelly said his officers only follow leads and do not simply trawl neighborhoods.

“We do what we believe necessary to protect this city, pursuant to the law,” Kelly said. “We have a battery of very experienced, well-trained lawyers that advise us on all of our tactics and operations.”

Outside the department, however, there is little oversight of the Intelligence Division and it’s roughly $60 million budget. The City Council is not told about all the department’s secret operations and city auditors have not scrutinized the unit since it was transformed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Some of its tactics, such as monitoring name changes, would not be allowed by the FBI because of civil liberties concerns.

Many of the NYPD programs were built with the help of the CIA as part of an unusually close collaboration that is now the subject of an internal CIA investigation.

“America is supposed to be a country that protects your freedoms,” said Yusuf Ali Muhammed, a protester from the Bronx who wore an embroidered skullcap and a white Middle Eastern robe. “But America has become a hypocritical government, a government that thinks it can do anything it wants with nobody objecting.”

Abdur-Rashid, of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood in Harlem, said it was no secret that police have been watching mosques for years. But monitoring everything from Islamic schools to restaurants, as shown in NYPD documents, was unacceptable, he said.

“We’re peaceful people,” said Dalia Nazzal, 18, a freshman at the City University of New York, a target of police infiltration. “We don’t deserve to be under surveillance.”

Mohamed Mahmoud, 40, the owner of a Brooklyn printing shop, said he knew several people who had been approached by NYPD officers trying to recruit them as informants. Documents obtained by the AP also show that police monitored even those Muslims who decried terrorism and partnered with the government to prevent violence.

“They think that all Muslims are criminals, and it’s not right,” Mahmoud said.

    A Muslim in sitting next to me in a burger joint in conversation about radical Muslims told me that he didn’t care what his Muslim “brother” had done, he would never turn him over to an infidel… like me… ever!

      Respect MUST and ALWAYS should be earned…its not given out unearned. I know we now teach to the contrary that you respect all persons regardless of their beliefs and or views. But that goes against everything that is Biblical and natural. I do not respect idol worshipers, those disrespectful to parents, truce breakers, pagans, the unholy and doing things unnatural before God. Even the way he says respect us first then we respect you. Why can’t it be respect us (the non-Muslim) first then the non muslim can respect them. I can say the exact same thing…..the logic of course is all whacky here. If Christians, or Buddists, or Zoroastrians, or any other religion known to man had flown commercial air liners into the WTC, I‘d sure as hell want their houses of worship infiltrated to keep track of what they’re up to. VERY FEW Muslims denounced the actions of the the MUSLIM terrorists who flew into those buildings. Sorry, but I don’t feel the least bit sorry for them.

    Islam is a political, legal, social, military and financial system but it is not a religion. The Kuran is unreformed after 1400 plus years and violence, enslavement, murder and taxation of non-Muslims has not been renounced by the ummah. The teachings of the Kuran and Shariah law are totally incompatible with our United States Constitution. Islam should be banned as a terror cult.

      Your comments are completely correct! When Harry Reid, stands up and says he has come to realize that Islam is a good, and peaceful religion, he seems to be forgetting the last 1400 years of it’s history! Besides, what are they bitching about! All other religious faiths are under persecution in this country. The government watches all religions as potential enemies of the state! Why do they think they should be special? Besides, if anything, they have gotten special treatment under the Obama administration! He can certainly stand up and tell us what the Holy Quran says. He has had them in the White House for Ramadon and prayed with them. He uninvited Franklin Graham to lead prayer because he had spoke against Islam, and it was requested by the muslim leaders to do so! Besides, Franklin Graham, has a son serving in the mideast! He almost scrapped his kness when he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, showing he was subservant to him. He weighed in on the mosque being built in NYC, near the 9-11 memorial and was in favor of it! Again, what are they bitching about? It’s the rest of the faiths that should be marching, but are asleep as usual IMO!

    I sympathize with these people because we cannot distinguish between traditional and radical muslims. We are at war with people who are radical muslims. They have no country boundries. We have to also be sceptical of the muslim people because they have a proven track record of being willing to do whatever is necessary to inflict damage upon the enemy and that includes sacrificing their own children, wives, parents, themselves. This is an ongoing war. This is Vietnam on steroids. We have to win this and cannot win it by being complaisant. We don‘t want to hurt anyones’ feelings tho while fighting this. We are protecting the muslims in this country while fighting different fronts on their home turf. We are trying to make martyrs of as many radicals that hold weapons against U.S. as we can. Please report any anti-american activities to your locals, please.

      Well Try this; ask the so called “moderate Muslim” if they believe that Israel must be wiped off of the face of the earth. Ask Them if they believe that everyone who does not believe in Islam must be killed or turned into their slaves. Ask them if they will condemn the terrorist actions of Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
      Ask them if they believe that shariah law should be made the Supreme Law in the United States.
      They believe in these things, and they support them.

    The jingle, “Fly the friendly skies of United” is long gone.
    –Because what, why, and who?

    Water, lighters, embroidery scissors, nail files….., nor toothpaste are permitted on airplanes.
    –Why?

    Washington DC used to be an open-to visitors and friendly site-seeing place to visit…
    –But, no longer.
    There are barricades all over the place.
    There are military jeeps and sharp-shooters here and there.

    There is no question that Islamic extremists attacked our country on 9/11 and continue to sponsor al Qaeda and Hamas. If I am going to be on the lookout for Islamic extremists working within my borders to commit terrorist acts, I am not going to be looking in Christian churches, in Jewish synagogues, at a Green Bay Packer game, Disneyland, or hundreds of other places. I’m going to monitor places where muslims tend to frequent. Like mosques. These guys need to wake up and smell the coffee. They have a global image problem. The world thinks that radical elements of their religion want to kill non-muslims. If they want to be treated with respect, they should work harder to eliminate the radical elements within their religion who are ruining their image, compromising our security, and forcing us to scrutinize their every move.

      I am reading the Islamic Anti Christ. I read that Muhammad was having dreams that were ver dark, about killing people. He at first thought that they were just bad dreams. He kept having them and finally decided that this was what he was suppose to do, that these dreams were coming from an Angel. Some thought that he may have had a mental disorder. But out of him came the writing of the Karan.I think I have this right. Can’t remember exactly every detail, but you get the picture. In other words the Muslims are practicing what the Karan says, and was most likely written by a deranged person.

      In all fairness, there was a big peace protest (degrading terrorism) in England. That said, there have not been nearly comparable efforts to stop the hatred internally.     When the muslims stop hating the country they live in, when they stop killing Americans, when they stop supporting those muslims in other countries who do kill Americans, then maybe there would be no need to spy on them. However, so many terrorists have been grown and have been covered by the Mosques in the US causing the need for the spying, etc. The muslims were’nt spied on until muslims attacked, and continue to attack America. Get rid of the reason the surveillance is needed, then we can get rid of the surveillance.

      You are right on. But please stop using the word religion. It never was a religion – it is a political system hiding under the banner of religion. If you read their book the Koran you will find it specifically requires these political thugs to “convert us or failing that kill us”. There are no traditional or peaceful Muslims.
      Just ask my daughter who is a Combat Advisor in Afghanistan today. She is a Navy Doctor but is imbedded in a Afgan military hospital as a Combat Advisor first and a doctor second. She will tell you how sick this political system really is.
      I have noted this before but a Spaniard wrote several months ago as he was walking through his city that the cream of Europe was sent to the ovens in WW II to be replaced by 20 million Muslims all bent on breading Europe under. Wake up it is happening here in our nation as well. Rip the cover of religion off and call them what they are a political party bent on bringing this nation down. Then go after them with one purpose and that is to destroy them before they get us.

      The Bible commands that unbelievers be killed also. (see Deuteronomy 17 for one of many instances.) Kill ‘em all..man, woman, child, animals.
      There are many parallels between the Koran and the Old Testament which is still in effect because the Bible says in Psalm 19:7 ‘The law of the Lord is perfect’. NOthing has changed…just western society has become a tad more civilized on the outside. There are some pseudo Chrisitan groups that are just as radical and violent as Islamic jihadis. The world would be a safer, happier place if religion were realized to be the myth that it is. Imagine….
