Hundreds of Occupy Activists Gather in Iowa to Plot ‘Anti-Caucus’ Distruptions

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Already they have interrupted Michele Bachmann and drawn a withering putdown from Newt Gingrich as “all noise, no thought.”

Now, to the dismay of Iowa Republicans, Occupy activists in Des Moines are vowing to expand their protests as GOP presidential hopefuls converge on the state that speaks first in the race for the party’s presidential nomination.

“The 99 percent have woken up and we’re not going to take it anymore,” Occupy activist Stephen Toothman, of Des Moines, said as an advance guard met Tuesday to decide which candidates to target in the coming week.

Hundreds of Occupy activists from at least 10 states were expected to participate in a “People’s Caucus” near the Capitol to plot activities between now and the Jan. 3 caucuses. The activists are promising to interrupt candidates at events and camp out at their Iowa campaign offices. They say they want to change the political dialogue, but critics fear their tactics could tarnish Iowa’s reputation for civil political discourse ahead of the contest. Activists say mass arrests are possible.

They planned to break up into preference groups based on which candidates they want to target and present with a list of grievances.

Organizers are encouraging activists who live in Iowa to show up on caucus night and vote “no preference” as a protest but say they have no plans to interfere with the voting itself. Nonetheless, state Republican Party officials have instructed precinct leaders to report any disruption to police and the party.

Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn criticized Occupy activists for targeting the caucuses, which have long been held up as a model of democracy where citizens in the months leading up to the event can directly question candidates and then gather with their neighbors on caucus night. Strawn said he worried most of the problems would be caused by those from out of state.

“It would be an absolute shame if outside agitators ruin the Iowa caucus experience,” he said.

Occupy activists, who came from as far away as New York and Seattle, said the caucuses were largely meaningless because the parties and candidates were overly influenced by wealthy, special interests that led them to ignore key issues.

“The caucuses are really a statement as to where the nation is as a whole. I think this occupation is really a statement that they are dissatisfied with all the choices that we’ve been given,” said Ivan Burghart, an activist from St. Louis who mingled with others at the group’s Des Moines headquarters.

Occupy Des Moines organizer Jess Mazour, 24, said protesters wanted candidates to address issues ranging from campaign finance reform to college debt to the home foreclosure crisis. She said the weeklong set of actions marked a new phase for the nationwide Occupy movement, and would be a test of whether activists could flex political muscle as one group.

The group insists it will practice non-violence, and activists were going through civil disobedience training Tuesday. Still, police fear scuffles could break out between frustrated candidates’ supporters and protesters at events.

Already, the tactics have annoyed candidates and angered supporters.

When Occupy activists started chants against Bachmann at an Iowa City diner last week, campaign aides blared Christmas songs from a sound system to drown them out. That prompted one activist to yell in the face of a Republican organizer to turn down the music, and the restaurant manager called police as tensions rose. Bachmann soon departed – and her supporters left upset by what had transpired.

Stephany Hoffelt, a member of Occupy Iowa City, said protesters believed the in-your-face tactics were justified because their message hasn’t gotten through in the past.

“It’s perfectly appropriate if you were listening to what we were saying,” Hoffelt said of the group‘s chant blasting Bachmann’s positions on health care and taxes. “She is part of the 1 percent.”

Protesters with Occupy Des Moines startled Gingrich when he started speaking at a news conference at the Capitol this month, surprising him from behind and shouting “put people first,” before being ushered out. Protesters later trailed Gingrich through the Capitol halls and taunted him. “You can run but you can’t hide,” one said.

Gingrich dismissed them as the “one-tenth of one percent” and noted he’d been similarly heckled during an earlier stop in Iowa City. “All noise, no thought, tried to drown out conversation,” he said.

In the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale, where Gingrich, Bachmann and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, have campaign offices, police met with staffers to discuss how to handle protests.

Urbandale police Lt. Kent Knopf said offices may keep their doors locked to prevent sit-ins, and he advised campaign aides to call his department if they want protesters to leave. Knopf said protesters would be cited for trespassing if they ignore orders to leave or camp directly outside offices instead of a public space within 15 feet of the street.

“It‘s a waste of everybody’s energy for what they are trying to accomplish,” Knopf said. “They think they’re doing something. We’ll see if it makes a difference or not, but it hasn’t yet.”

Foley reported from Iowa City, Iowa.

How does one go about directing the movement of the OWS crowd? sheep herding, and fish schooling come to mind, as does the pied piper….

Individually they appear as clueless outcast followers, seeking approval; but in the group they appear to be just one of the many. Today they sit in that park, next week they sit in another, they go here, they go there….and with such a ‘big demand’ agenda,

The ‘school of followers’ does not write the agenda, they just recite it….and believe the indoctrinated B.S. simply because the others in the herd do. But the big question still remains…who’s writing the script….and more importantly…why is the media buying into the frenzy of the herds natural and independant intelligence?

Rather than highlight the next movement of the ‘zombie fish school’ it would be refreshing if some media outlet would expose the un-seen director of the play that is being crafted to make it appear spontaneous.

In so many ways, all the media is responsible for granting the herd an authentic credibility, by not exposing the source of their collective thoughts and movements.

Who will pull back the curtain? and keep it back….

We know who the real organizers are (Soros; Trumka), and who’s paying a lot of Occupiers for their time and effort. Pelosi and a host of others, including Obama know exactly what is going on.
Remember Eric Holder decided to no longer pursue lawsuits against the (new) Black Panthers for intimidating voters? I’m sure if these Occupiers do the same, he‘ll be there to help ’em out.

The public school system has prepared them for this. They not only teach “new age” and communist ideas, but they discourage individual thought. My son, who is only 12, goes to a magnet school. It‘s the best one of 3 he’s attended in just a short 6 years (we have school of choice and I’ve been trying to find a good fit). They don‘t like kids who don’t fit the mold, or are not willing to change to fit the mold. They claim they don’t support bullying, but do nothing about it when it happens. I‘m sure it’s been going on for a long time. That’s why you see young people and old hippies at these things.

We don‘t need to ’spread the wealth’, or pay off student loans, as it is apparent these people have more money than they know what to do with. It is also obvious by the size of some of these ‘occupiers’ that they don’t need money for food either. Someone is paying them very well! There is a reporter somewhere (Breitbart, where are you?) who could have a brilliant piece if they could follow the money and report it. It is time to let people know who is funding these occupiers – bottom line.

      2) Are there no FEC laws regarding interfering with the ELECTORAL PROCESS?

      3) The answer to “2)” is irrelevant. Our DOJ is corrupt and would never prosecute, unless it they were interfering with an obama campaign / electoral event.

      4) How many times have they “occupied” an obama event / socialist democrat event? Vs. how many times have they occupied CONSERVATIVE events? – This points out that they are clearly an operating arm of the obama campaign / dnc / ala sheila whats-her-name-shultz.

Disruption of these caucuses represents a theft of time and thus the theft of campaign money that was intended to promote a candidate. Who would be shocked to learn that the leftist are pro theft since they warmly embrace the idea that the government should do their stealing for them. It will be interesting to see if they avoid locations that have been rented pr owned, thus risking trespass charges.

These are communists. Pure and simple. They don’t stand for any principle that “IS” American. But they DO stand for every plank in the communist manifesto.

Do you have to be a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out? Do you have to have some one else tell you what their intentions ‘really’ are? Can you really not figure this out on your own (Americans)?

first: occupy des moines is a joke. when it first started there were about 100 members. now they are down to roughly 20 or 30 and im convinced many of the tents are unoccupied.
2nd: they have been planning to disrupt the caucuses for months now. sort of like rush limbaugh’s operation chaos. to his credit ed fallon has stated that occupier should not go to the caucuses but rather annoy the candidates hqs. the occupy dm facebook page shows that they are planning on going to the caucus however.
3rd: most people in des moines think these guys are a joke and they are the butt of many jokes. most people here are libertarian minded though there is this team mentality of republicans and democrats that is hard to get through, but im trying. most are whatever party their parents were and thats how they vote.

Myself and many others both in the conservative media and “civilians” have stated very clearly that OWS will seek to disrupt as many GOP and Tea Party events as they can. They’ve got the wink and a nod from Obama. Obama is happy to play American against American, we’ve seen him do it often, including recently where his website (led by his little troll Jesse Lee) instructs Obamabots to confront their “conservative” relatives at the Christmas..sorry…“holiday” table. DO NOT DELUDE YOURSELVES…OWS are Obama and the left’s brown shirts. They are seeking to disrupt GOP and Tea Party events in order to provoke an incident. The complicit media will then run with that to smear and tarnish conservatives during this all too important election cycle. Pundits have been saying this will be the dirtiest election in living memory…and it’s already showing signs of exceeding even those expectations. Obama is truly a vulgar man.

The ‘democratic’ party has a major problem. They stand arm in arm with sign carrying socialists, marxists and communists. Subsequently, it’s difficult to tell them apart now. When I see Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reed or any other ‘democrat’ speaking on television now, I don’t wonder if they are un-American, I only wonder how un-American they’ve become. How far have they gone? How much of their souls have they sold to the evil George Soros’s of the world?
Just for the record, ‘democrats’, you have made this election about Freedom vs Socialism/Marxism/Communism. That‘s the choice voter’s will be making in November.
The fact that the ‘democratic’ party says and does nothing about this fiasco when -deep down- they know it’s wrong, unjust and un-American, tells every hard-working American exactly what kind of people they are.
Most ‘republicans’ have transformed themselves into John Kennedy democrats, which is why so many of us have become Independents. Remember John Kennedy, ‘democrats’? He‘s the one who told you to ask what ’you could do for your country and not what your country could do for you’. Or, have you changed that history too? The fact is, john Kennedy wouldn’t bother having lunch with Mr. Obama, Ms. Schultz or any other member of the ‘democratic’ party of today. He’d be thoroughly disenchanted with all of you.

I used to like the Democrat Party when JFK was President. Although current day Democrats claim that the Tea Party has taken over the Republican Party, they are in complete denial that the Progressives (aka Socialists, Marxists, and Communists) long ago took over the Democrat Party. There aren’t anymore JFK Democrats left, because they have been driven out. Democrats are no longer allowed to compromise with Republicans. So sad that the Democrats want to be more like an European Democracy, while the Republicans want to keep our American Republic. The Republicans should have signs made up in advance which say: “These are the kind of people that Obama, Biden, Reid, and Pelosi support – loudmouth bigots.” The signs should also have an arrow on it, so that it can be pointed at the appropriate loudmouth bigots.

    Definition of a bigot:

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

      @Diane,

Who needs signs, when the Occupoopers are the very definition, of themselves, of why we are Conservative. These trust-fund limousine liberals may well be passionate, but they do not persuade.

Just an idea, Lady, but I think that’s all we Conservatives need. The rest is just gravy.

Simple question – now that these bands have openly declared criminal intent to invade and cause chaos in these debates and such, can they not be swept up for criminal conspiracy and such charges by the police?

Something about the timing of these actions and the new manual of urban violence survival by annonymous shown earlier today on the Blaze are linked.

As usual with the administration and Soros; more is here than meets the eye, especially as now they can order anyone swept up and detained indefinitly w/o trial – say anyone running against Obama in the 2012 elections?

What are the new connections coming about?

Most people have gotten to the point of dismissing the #Occupy bands as harmless (most of the time) yet even useless idiots pointed in the right direction by their puppet masters can inflict considerable pressure and damage.

    What is next?

Oh, c’mon Snow! After so many years of SCOTUS rulings on the definition of free speech, can we dare presume for an instant police are finally going to clear out the trash from public places? C’mon!

Liberals presume a ‘right’ to stop traffic, impede an honest business from doing its thing, and keeping average folk like you and me from getting to work on time. Courts have ruled on this, and politicians in major cities have allowed this nonsense to go on unimpeded. Police aren’t going to do a thing. I can‘t decide if cops are ’victims’ of the elites, or if they’re willing partners.

SNOWLEOPARD, I have the same thoughts. If I were being totally honest I would have to say that we have no chance in 2012. This progressive agenda is far bigger and goes much deeper than we could have ever imagined. As far as what is next, more of the same. Lies, corruption, destruction, and greed straight from the pits of hell. They have no conscious, compassion, morals, or faith in God which means they will stop at nothing. They will continue to brainwash and use their followers to gain ground and push their agenda. God help us. I want to think positive but it gets more difficult as each day passes. They have endless funding and resources that we can not begin to match. I keep praying and asking God to give me the wisdom and strength needed to face the wrath that is sure to follow. Nothing will stop them. This next year will mark a time in our countries history that I never would have imagined that I would see in my lifetime.

      @pamela kay

I’m not trying to engage a fight but, realistically, what you posted is exactly what the liberals want: a defeatist attitude. Just to further my point…why do you think the MSM writes and/or broadcasts nothing but puff pieces on Democrats? And look at the last several elections, when the MSM tries all the time to choose Pub candidates, telling us someone like McCain is a really good choice.

Again, not to argue with you since I can relate to how you feel–this is the worst time to be defeatist in any way. The presidency, in my view, is nothing in the end. It is in Congress where We the People hold the key to our liberty. That is where, I believe, we should sustain the hardest fight.

Just some ideas, to bolster you a little if I dare presume such a role. We don’t dare give up now. And maybe not ever, no matter how the chips fall.

The group most committed to its goals will prevail. I believe the voter fraud of 2007 was just a practice run for 2012 (in case there is a 2012 election).
I expect no one will be arrested for plotting or conspiring to disrupt until the majority cry out and demand such action. At that point we’re all in deep doodoo.

Does that sign say “Do Come In All Welcome”? I bet that would be a great place to have a Tea Party. I wonder how the Occupiers would deal with a Tea Party gathering at their front door… or better yet, inside… Do you think the Tea Party would be welcome?

Somehow I doubt the Tea Party would be welcome at all.

Do not underestimate the larger picture at play here – I do sense the timing of the band ‘annonymous’ releasing that ‘urban violence’ boom mentioned on the Blaze earlier is connected. There is something bigger coming, and soon, Obama and Soros have begun the next move of the chess board, and we need to watch and warm once its found out…

Okay Iowa, you can do it. You’re almost there. Vote RON PAUL or none at all!! He has the momentum going into this. Don’t listen to the Bolshevik Zionist news that are going all out to discredit him and trying to convince you not to vote for him (he’s unelectable, he’s crazy, etc). Instead of the news reporting on the results, we have the Jewish media trying to influence and skew the results ahead of time and then report on them. The Jewish media is against Paul because he had the audacity to say he wasn’t going to let America stay a puppet government of Israel. How dare he! Vote Ron Paul or none at all Iowa!! Make us proud.
