Hundreds of Thousands of Pennies Spill Across Oklahoma Highway

Hundreds of thousands of pennies on a Tulsa highway prompted the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to close down the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 75 from 41st Street South to the 23rd Street exit.
The OHP says a Loomis armored truck lost the pennies when a back door of the truck opened up, spilling boxes of pennies onto the roadway where Highway 75 and I-244 merge.
Troopers say as the truck rounded a curve boxes of pennies shifted, causing the door to open and the pennies to fall out. At first troopers said about a dozen boxes fell out but later increased the estimate to 40. Each box holds $25 of pennies so that adds up to about $1,000.

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 10:48pmPfft….the only good thing the US one cent coin can be used for these days, is taking a bunch, putting them into a sock, and smacking the cr@p out of someone you don’t like.

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 10:59pmThey should have just given some of the OWs protestors a stick with a magnet on the end to pick those copper pennies up. :)

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 11:22pmI guess it was good that it was the one cent coins that fell on the highway, because imagine the disaster, if it had been another coin, such as dimes…..Can you just imagine what would happen if pot heads heard that “dime bags” had broken open and spilled their contents all over the roadway?…..the entire highway would have been shut down and clogged with people looking to score a free buzz.

Posted on February 26, 2012 at 2:23amHow on earth do you forget to shut the back of an armored car? This is far from the first time I have heard of money falling out of an armored car during my life. It has happened at least three times within 100 miles of my house.

America’s “money” is as magnetic-less as it is worthless. (Yes, I know. You can still buy things with it. Don’t fret, it’ll all catch up soon … )
In the case of “the penny”, from 1909 to 1982, metal composition was mostly copper (with the exception of the 1943 steel cent fabricated during WWII). However, from 1982 to date, metal composition is copper-plated zinc.

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 3:51pmIt will soon be illegal to have penneys…or for that matter any US currency. When you see the gas and food prices go through the roof dont blame the Arabs or the farmers. What’s really happening is the value of the dollar is decreasing. The value of the fuel, food and other items is still the same as it was decades ago.

Stop making pennies, it cost 2.4 cents to make one. but try to get 2.4 cents for one …lol
If one of the pennies (They are actually cents) was a uncirculated 1909-S VDB, it would be worth thousands of dollars. I would have taken a wagon and collected many of them if they would have allowed me to do it. There could have been several wheat cents in the mix.

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 2:26pmI was walking with a well off company president one time and he saw a penny on the ground and stopped to pick it up. I asked him “why, with all the money you have?” He told me it wasn’t the money, it was the reminder and asked me to read the coin- “In God We Trust”. I have picked up pennies ever since that day, but this here situation??? That is a WHOLE nother matter!!

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 3:22pmWhere did you hear that? Not true. 1.26¢ to produce a penny since 2007.
But what is true is that the pre-1993 pennies (made entirely of copper, except wartime 1943 pennies made of steel and copper plating) are now worth 2.4¢ on copper content only. The newer pennies are “fakes”, a sandwich of a zinc substrate and thin copper coating.

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 2:09pmwhy should pennies need to be secure? I leave them wherever I go. They are worthless. They aren’t worth the metal anymore (not Cu).
