Huntsman: Religion Will Not, and Should Not, Be a Concern for Voters in This Race

Huntsman: Religion Will Not, and Should Not, Be a Concern for Voters in This RaceRENO, Nev. (AP) — Former Utah Republican Gov. Jon Huntsman said Friday that he doesn’t believe his Mormon faith will be an issue in his bid for the White House, adding that he’s running for president — not to be the nation’s spiritual “guru.”

Huntsman spoke to reporters in Nevada during an hour-long campaign stop at the Reno Livestock Events Center, where the Reno Rodeo was about to begin.

Three days after formally announcing his candidacy, the former ambassador to China said his list of priority states includes the early caucus swing state of Nevada, where Republicans sided with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in 2008.

Romney also is Mormon. So is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who said earlier this week he’d pick Huntsman over Romney if he had to. Polls show many voters have reservations about electing a Mormon president.

But Huntsman said Friday that he didn’t believe religion would be a concern for voters choosing the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.

“Nor should it be,” he said. “I’m not running for guru here.”

A candidate’s track record, as well as “who has a world view that will get us where this country needs to be” will be much more important, he said.

Huntsman met earlier Friday with Washoe County GOP leaders and had lunch with Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, Reno Mayor Bob Cashell — a Republican who voted for Reid last election — and a number of local business officials.

Huntsman said contrary to conventional wisdom, he doesn’t believe Romney is the heavy favorite to win the Nevada caucus.

“Yes, some might have a head start in terms of fundraising and name recognition,” he said. “But given the nature of the media market and our ability to network with social media tools, you can overcome any gap like that over time.”

Nevada’s presidential caucuses are set for Feb. 18, after Iowa and New Hampshire get their turns and before South Carolina picks its favorite candidate.

In announcing his candidacy Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Huntsman stressed his record as governor of Utah, where he won praise from conservative groups for cutting taxes and recruiting new business to the state. He served as governor from 2005 to early 2009, when Obama offered him the China post. He resigned that position in April.

During a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Democratic leaders in Utah and Nevada criticized what they said was Huntsman’s apparent move to the right on issues such as taxes, health care and the environment to court conservatives GOPs in the primary after developing a reputation as more of a moderate.

“We were looking forward to a campaign of ideas and having a moderate Republican in the race,” Utah Democratic Party chairman Wayne Holland said. “Instead we’ve seen pandering that is disappointing.”

The article I wrote from said,,,,,,,,Bilderberg’s like to own both horses in a race to the Whitehouse, and they invited Perry to there 2007 meeting because he was big in NAFTA. Huntsman is ALSO another horse in the race to the Whitehouse in 2012…… The Bilderberg’s are giving us probably giving us 3 or 4 HORSES to pick from……..BE VERY CAREFUL WHO ””’you”"”" PICK

These folks don’t just invite any Tom,Dick or Harry into their pow-wow and peace pipe smoking just to appear inclusive.
They are on a OWG/NWO/Global Governance Mission.
All that is going on in the World is not mere coincidence. These people have been working towards this goal long before you were ever born.

John Adams said, and I am paraphrasing this, constitutional form of government will only work for a moral and religous peoples and it fit for no other. We use the word conservative to often, I think constitutionalst
is a better term. This is because the republican form of government that was established by the constitution was meant to be a shield between tyranny on one hand and anrachy on the other. When we discount the relevancy of the constitution we will be endanger of one or the other or both.

He is a heathen as a Mormon and pedaling his way to hell. I would not vote for this lib because he is not a conservative.
Evangelicals should keep that in mind when voting. Look for at least biblically moral and of conservative.

Here is a thought, drop all “religious” affiliations. If a person is a Bible believer, that is all that is important. If they have….reservations……about their beliefs, than I think that really tells a story as well. The Bible is the only true “complete book” necessary. It is the instruction manual for life. If you have a problem with that…….

338lapua – you obviously have not read the Bible. I have and the mass murder perpetrated by God, endorsement of slavery by God, maltreatment of women, human sacrifices, killing of your kids because they disrespect you, all depicted as true in the Bible are appalling. Do you really believe in the Noah’s ark story and believe in a talking snake? Do you believe the Earth is only 6000 years old? And how did you determine the Bible is the truth? Because someone told you so?

God is just and loving and does everything for His glory. My hope is that you turn to God, repent, and trust in Jesus.
The Bible is written by God through with men with their own personality and style. The Bible say so in Timothy. You might want to study the Bible like I have for many years. It is all true because God can’t lie

As a proud excommunicated Mormon, I find your post to be short sighted and a little disgusting. “He is a heathen as a Mormon and pedaling his way to hell.“ ”Evangelicals should keep that in mind when voting.” SonOfThunder What I find disgusting is your egotism, only you have the truth and you would only vote for someone that agrees with your truth. You wrote you would even vote for a liberal before you would vote for a Mormon. You are a person filled with contradictions, what liberal holds to your truth?

I started this out by writing I am a proud excommunicate Mormon. I rose high in the “church” at a local level. Was married in the “Temple” and attended regularly. I was stripped of my membership over “Biblical” differences. Am I angry, no. I respect the members of The Church of Latter Day Saints. I took a vow to never reveal what happens in the “Temple”. I will keep that vow even though I disagree heartily. Are they “heathens”? That is not for me to judge, One Greater than I has that responsibility.

Would I vote for Huntsman? No, but it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with what he would do to the country with his neo-progressive policies.

Do you even have a clue as to why it happened? Do you know the history of how the Members of the LDS faith were driven to Salt Lake? Do you know that when they settled there it was NOT in the US? Once it was troops were sent to “check up” on the “Mormons.” So what would you or any reasonable person think was going to happen when you saw troops coming? Keep in mind the last time troops came they took away Joseph Smith with the promise of protecting him. That‘s didn’t go well did it?

I think he is really out of touch with U.S voters if he thinks religion is not important. That is what the present Pres. tried to tell us and you see what we got. Well, we are still not sure what religion we got with him. I don’t think voters want to judge the religion they just want something normal that they understand. They want to know that he believes in God, prays to the God that most U.S. voters pray to and is not going to try to change our culture, religion, gov. and way of life. And that he or she is not going to make fun of our faith in God, “they cling to their religion and guns.”

I require that you at least share my Judeo-Christian values and ethics, in order to garner my vote.

So, I respectfully disagree that religion will not play a role.

Now, as far as requiring you be Something-a-tarian, or that you NOT be a thus-and-such-ist,
to that extent, I agree, “denomination” will not be a litmus test.

However, you certainly will need to be a true patriot who believes in American Exceptionalism, and a Constitutional Conservative – if you are to have any chance of getting elected in 2012 – regardless of anything – including party!

YEP, you read that right – INCLUDING PARTY.
I am convinced obama cannot be re-elected. I believe Americans are awake and are demanding a Constitutional Conservative who believes in a small government, limited in size and powers, by the Constitution. Anything less, and you simply won’t have a large enough tent.
obama will get his 24% of koolaid drinkers that would vote for him if he perormed human sacrifices on the East Lawn! He’s losing, or has lost, everybody else.

Aside from being an ARMS (Another Rich Man’s Son) this guy has already lost me at “Respects our PRESIDENT” really???? OBAMA???? Maybe he should have said “THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT” but this wannabe Commie/Marxist/Muslim Dictator? HELL NO.

Maybe we‘ll watch him ’splain why his family contributed $ 25,000 TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND dollars to keep HARRY REID in charge…. there is NO excuse for that. So, let the ROTHCHILDS and the other misguided Republican RINOS raise $ for this Billionaire and let him shoot off his mouth…in the final analysis: NONE of them hold a CANDLE to SARAH PALIN . PALIN / WEST is a ticket that can get all of us; a majority of the Blacks who know Obama is horrible for USA; a majority of the Naturalized and USA born Hispanics and the rest who are in AMERICA because they love America. They understand we are already the WORLD living under one roof and need to work and strive to keep our LIBERTY.
The figures that Glenn’s guest this past week stated: only 5% of those ever born in the world have lived in true freedom and half of us are alive today…that should make everyone think: PUT OUR COUNTRY BEFORE any other expenditure now… BACK PALIN!!! PALIN/WEST. Winning Ticket. Not this yahoo…. No more sickening McCAINS.. never again!!!

Religion IS a factor! Consider a Muslim candidate folks. Hope it never happens. (And don‘t anyone say I’m equating a Mormon to a Muslim, I’m most certainly NOT. That’s not my point!) I’m just saying as an example. This country is in dire trouble starting with the inception of the progressives in the 1920′s (?)
and has, I’m afraid, climaxed with obozo and his administration. He must be stopped. If he is re-elected then all hell breaks loose.

Huntsman is a distraction at best. DO NOT let the progs choose our candidate.

Huntsman is not a Conservative. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing…translation, a progressive.

They hid him in China until now….there is a reason. Send him back to China ASAP…we don’t want him.

I want Colonel West. I think he is our George Washington.

He’s right. No one cares he believes that Joseph Smith, Jr. was given some secret gold plates by the angel Moroni in the 1820′s and used the “translation” of these plates as a basis to found his cult. No problem, dude. Makes perfect sense. So much sense a deep thinker like Glenn Beck bought into the exact same, perfectly credible philosophy. If it’s OK with Glenn, it’s OK with me.

      ROFL @ JZS

You are just a Mormon hater. I have known many of them through my life and not one has been anywhere near as evangelistic as myself and most Baptists I know. In fact, I cant remember any of them being anything but respectful of my theology. JWs? Yeah, maybe I would see your point, but even at that they are simply spreading the gospel as Christ told us to do. A few cannot take “no” for an answer and they are NOT respectful of other theologies but it is up to each individual believer to search Scripture for the truth.

No JZS, that is nothing but an unfounded troll. Most Mormons do not trumpet their religion.

I’m sorry but as a Roman Catholic I find Mormonism hypocrisy, heretic and just plain wrong for a political candidate to be. It was founded in my home state of NY. They got kicked out of everyplace they went and settled in no-mans-land Utah. They believe in polygamy. God the Father and Jesus Christ as two separate beings is false. IMO Americans need not a heretic Christian in the White House.
