By many reports, Jon Huntsman‘s appearance on Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report” on Monday night went well. Then news started circulating of a cut joke that was not only awkward, but that some could take offense to. And now it’s worth wondering if the reviews could change.
See, during the show, Colbert played a Chinese jingle a couple times during the show and noted that “I’m legally obligated to do that.” In the aired segment, Huntsman laughs it off. But according to ABC, the segment was edited for time and cut out one of Hutnsman’s responses to the jingle that was less than favorable:
When Colbert played a sound effect of a stereotypical Chinese riff, Huntsman joked, “When’s the delivery food coming?” After a few seconds of awkward silence, Colbert replied, “Did that go over well in Beijing?” This portion of the interview was cut for time from the broadcast.
“There was a gasp,” audience member Dana Cole told ABC News. “A little tasteless. No one really saw it coming. He got ahead of himself. ”
Politico’s Alexander Burns responded by saying that it “turns out Jon Huntsman’s flat debate humor actually could have been worse.” The Atlantic Wire called it “tasteless” in its headline.
Still, one audience member told ABC it might not have been as bad as it seemed.
“I think he was just really nervous honestly,” said Zach Zirlin. “He was just trying to humanize himself a little bit … I think he brings a very fresh face to the Republican Party. All the past candidates were not easy to relate to and he seems more human than the rest.”
As for Huntsman, he later went on to speak in perfect Mandarin, which might have earned him some points. He also felt confident about his appearance, but he also seemed to hint at the joke in a post-show interview.
“I think we got a passing grade. We didn’t screw it up. I don’t think I offended too many people. Maybe there was a memorable line or two that will actually show up on television over the next couple of days, and if so, we might get that famous [Colbert] bump,” Huntsman told TIME’s Mark Halperin.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 6:29pmThis PC stuff has long gotten out of hand. Huntsman was just making fun of Colbert’s silly jingle. So what? (Let me say that I am of Chinese descent and I am not bothered in the least by the food comment.) I didn’t think it was funny, but I wasn’t offended either. I did think Huntsman’s comment, “Maybe we will be at war with China after this interview is over” was funny.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 6:47pmSpeaking of Charles Krautheimer, the babbling buffoon of agnosticism, political correctness, scientology, and the proof of the link to Lucy.
Fox News more every day exposes their agenda peddling progressive tendencies with the rejects they trot out there to face the candidates. I can’t tolerate Huntsman, but he’s more right than Krautheimer and the Fox News bobbleheads.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 6:20pm“There was a gasp,” audience member Dana Cole told ABC News. GIVE ME A BREAK! How much would like to bet that Dana Cole is a bleeding heart liberal. I have Chinese food delivered to my home quite often. This is a perfect example of the mainstream media trying to make something out of nothing. Wish they would critique biden when he actually does say dumb things.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 6:55pmBet money she‘s the same type of ’bleeding heart‘ lib that says we need the illegals here for our economy because they do work Americans won’t do. Never any intake of breath on FOX (yes, even fox, but their still light years above the others as long as you’re aware) msnbc or cnn sets when that‘s said and it couldn’t be further from the truth. Yep, it’s a-ok to stereotype others when it works for them.
Report Post »I also didn’t find it offensive, then again I’m not Chinese. I do, however, work in a field that is very diverse. Lots of Indians (India) and a wide range of Asians that are highly educated and they seem to poke more fun at the stereo types of themselves and us Americans, without malice. I remember how scandalized I was when I started working in my lab at their lack of PC. Ahhh, the memories of when I was a pup and brainwashed. In reality, it’s ok to laugh at ourselves and with others.

Is Colbert afraid China might get ticked and call in our note and he would have to learn Manderin?

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 4:44pmOh my GOD!!! That is MUCH WORSE than the ‘Kill Sarah Palin’ “joke”. Not to mention that the idiot who made the Palin remark was CLEARLY JOKING and Huntsman was not joking at all but rather trying to be as malicious as possible!!! (and in case you are not sure, I am being as sarcastic as I possibly can!!!)

If you took that gift and hid it away in your little box and didn’t share it with anybody? If you took that gift and didn’t use it for its intended purpose? God’s gifts to you are not for YOU, silly goose, they’re for you to SHARE. That’s what the “works” thing is all about.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 4:02pmFirst, I in no way shape or form support Huntsman. Now, let me get this straight a Chinese food delivery joke is tasteless, but telling liberals to earn some respect by killing Sarah Palin is fine? So, stereotypical joke = evil, and kill someone joke = okay? Do I have that about right? This country has become the biggest bunch of babies in history. Wow, this take offense for everything crap needs to stop. But what better way to win an argument than playing the racism card, the bigotry card, the sexist card, and all the other emotional argument cards. PC is here to stay.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 3:54pmI’m not supporting Jon in this race because I like Romney much more, but I can tell you that he does have good value’s and he is a good person. I knew him personally about 17 years ago when no politics were involved. I could see then without the fog of politics that he has good core values. He or anyone else in the republican race would be 100 times better than who we have in the white house now. He doesn’t stand a chance of winning, but I’m glad that he and others like Paul, Bachmann, Santorum and others are in the race so we can see and discuss many different ideas. In the long run it will help the republican party.

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 4:40pmThat was an offensive joke? Wow, one can see how difficult it is to focus on real issues. And this “interview” never got around to them. Colbert asked about the 1% – 99%, but never went on for a specific answer. Of course the show is entertainment, not informational. But I hope Huntsman doesn’t apologize and tells people who are looking for some way to be offended, or to claim others have been offended, to put their efforts toward more productive pursuits.
