Hybrid Cars Get Handicap-Like Parking Privileges in Florida

Usually, special front-row parking is reserved for the handicapped or the elderly. Not in Orlando, Florida. There, hybrid vehicle owners are starting to get the same privileges.

An increasing number of Orlando buildings and venues are instituting front-row hybrid-only parking spaces in an attempt to earn “green” building status and reward car owners considered environmentally friendly. Places like the University of Central Florida, Ikea in South Orlando, and the Amway Center are just a few who are giving hybrid’s preferential treatment.

For now, the hybrid-only spots aren’t policed like a handicapped parking spot. But defenders are hoping the public will shame people into compliance.

“Right now this is a promotional thing, so I don‘t think we’re seeing enforcement,” Jon Ippel, the city of Orlando’s sustainability manager, told the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s more peer pressure. Hopefully the evil eyes violators get will force them to comply.“ He went on to call the spots ”sustainable spaces.”

A spokeswoman for the city of Orlando agreed. “There are the social-pressure aspects of it that should restrict it for those people it’s reserved for,” Cassandra Lafser told the Sentinel. She also included “green” parking in the same category as special spots for pregnant women.

“We reserve spaces for guests who have premium seating in the arena, and felt that it was important to also reserve spaces for those guests who are driving hybrid vehicles and/or carpooling to events, to recognize them for doing their part to be environmentally aware,” said UCF Arena Marketing Director Melissa Schaaff.

The hybrid-only parking phenomenon has been gaining traction in recent years. Residents have noticed them popping up at a Chicago Home Depot, a Nevada grocery store, and a North Carolina hotel. Enthusiasts and store owners can even purchase hybrid-only parking signs on Amazon.com.

Not everyone around the country approves, however. Some municipalities are even getting heat for the practice. Fort Collins, CO residents recently got the city to reverse its decision to implement the hybrid-only slots after many complained that the signs amounted to the city telling them what to drive.

Similarly, in Orlando some people are “green” with envy. Especially considering hybrids are generally more expensive than a regular car.

“I have heard that some people didn‘t like it because they question whether it’s fair,” Alexa Stone, program manager for ecoPreserve LLC, an Orlando consulting firm, told the Sentinel. “They think hybrids are expensive and elitist.”

And they are. The Nissan Leaf, for example, sells for around $32,000. That price goes down once taxpayers kick in $7,500 in federal tax subsidies. In contrast, one could purchase a small sedan such as the Hyundai Elantra for around $18,000.

As Kermit once said, “It’s not easy being green.” But in Orlando, it does have its perks.

Read the story from the Orlando Sentinel.

UPDATE:

Commenter CAPT_SPALDING points out that in Nashville, TN hybrid owners now get free parking downtown. WSMV reports:

The Metro Council voted to approve an ordinance to allow environmentally friendly cars owners to park free in downtown Nashville. The vote happened on the same day as one of the most anticipated “green” cars rolled out in Tennessee.

Hybrid car owners will have to pay a one-time $10 fee, according to the ordinance.”I never have to go to the gas station again,” said Ashley Heeren. [...]

The mayor signed an executive order in 2008 to make Nashville a “greener place,” and one proposal to do that is to offer those who drive environmentally friendly cars free downtown parking at meters.

This makes sense, the mentally hanicapped should count as hanicapped. You know what, I think this is discriminating against those who can think and use reason and logic. Charges should be filed for allowing such discrimination to take place in public settings. In the meantime I’ll be joy riding in a Hummer.

I enjoy screwing with these eco-idiots in my “tuned” 1 ton diesel dually. Spool up the turbo and put my foot into it blowing black smoke all over these knuckleheads. Laugh my ass off. By the way, here in the Sarasota area it’s very common to see some old fart or any other waste of humanity with a handicapped tag park in a handicapped spot and jump out and walk in the store. You know the total CO2 released by a hybrid car, including the energy utilized in the obtaining of the materials for the batteries, motors, and manufacturing is still more than an H3 will use during its entire life including what was used building it. So those rare earth metals excavation, refining, transport, manufacturing, and all are dirtier than just about any other process excluding corn based ethanol.

We live in Bozeman … 2nd only to Missoula, as the most politically correct city in Montana. Glenn’s best friend, and former Helena, Montana boy, Pat, can corroborate this fact.

On the Grand Opening Day of our brand new multi-million dollar taxpayer funded eco/green library, the local citizenry discovered that there was a bank of parking spots reserved for “Hybrid Only” cars. Well, folks revolted and blew their collective cool and now the bank of parking spots is for “Hybrid Preferred” cars … which is not an improvement. As a taxpayer, I refuse to be shamed and I will happily continue to park my 1998 Turbo Diesel Volkswagen Bug … which gets 50 mpg … in a “Hybrid Preferred” parking spot. There is always an empty one available just for me!

You can park in the spot if you like, but I hereby promise that even though we have a Prius we will never take advantage of this. We always park at the bottom of lots anyway. It is amusing to watch people fight over spaces, like most of them are so fat it wouldn’t hurt them to walk the extra 20 yards. It is just easier to get in and out and you have to worry a lot less about some dork parking beside you and banging up your car.

I was really big into Rabbit diesels in the late 70‘s through the 80’s. Me and a buddy would rebuild them and flip them. At one time we had 12 Rabbit diesels between the two of us! I am also an air cooled VW fan. The only reason we chose the Prius over the VW diesel was the cost of diesel over gas. If it were my car I would have gotten the VW but my wife enjoys the Prius.

I know I am ******* into the wind on this one workforit…I have read some of the most irrational posts throughout this thread…

Our car payment is not $500 a month. We payed in full $23K for our ‘07 new. That is equivalent with most new cars that are comparably equipped and built. What did your Suburban coast new? Granted you can buy a cheap new car for $15, but this is not an argument when most people are driving cars that cost even more than a Prius.

As far as insurance, we actually get some good discounts for driving a hybrid. Now, since most people will be making payments on their car they will need full coverage insurance compared to PIP and liability only (in my state) on a paid for car. This can be a factor…But no more a factor than anyone buying a new car faces. On the flip side, we buy new cars for our daily drivers because they are under warranty and maintenance is a lot less of a headache.

I am glad you will be driving to Disneyland. I am so impressed. We too will be driving many places this next year. From Florida we will be going to Chicago again in April, and as we have year passes for Dollywood we will be sure to drive up to Pigeon Forge two or three times. My wife is the regional MDS director in a large chain of Florida nursing homes and covers an area from Jacksonville to Tampa/Miami. $4 or even $5 a gallon gas, while being something to complain about, will not stop us from any of these plans. If anything, it raises my wife’s mileage reimbursement and we actually make more money on the deal. I really do not get why people in this country are so against good gas mileage! It is such an illogical position, almost like people are going to teach the government a lesson and drive the largest V8 SUV they can find and pay for 13MPG. Ooookay…It is amusing to watch idiots that make a 15-30 mile commute to work every day drive a big truck with no one in it but themselves…Day in and day out…Paying for all that gas. What a statement! That’ll show Obama!

At least you are smart enough to ride your hog…Nothing wrong with that, I have had a couple myself…I have also had several big SUVs. To pull boats and trailers. And I paid out the nose for the gas…

Troll Trainer I’m not picking on you. You purchased the car for your wife and I get why you want her to have the security of a new auto. What bothers me is it costs 23K to get 50 mpg. I could run the numbers for you but I’m sure you already know. It is the return on investment, I just don’t see it. I purchased that Suburban in 1996 for 5K cash. My kids drove it for years, my friends borrow it for boat and trailer duty, I use it when it snows. It has 250K on it now, It gets 15mpg pulling a 26′ boat or the thing is completely empty and my 110lb daughter is taking it to Seattle, she starts every time I turn the key and it is one safe vehicle.

The last car I paid 23K for was a 2003 Corvette, I think it averaged 23 mpg… (I didn’t own it long enough to really assess the mileage… Not a good car for middle aged tall guys) My point being they are sold under the green BS banner. A false flag of value (the fuel savings for that extra 15 mpg takes forever to recoup) and I think most middle income families would be better served by purchasing a less expensive (13K) mode of transportation that uses a little more gas, Ford fiestas get what 35 to 40 mpg?. 10K is a lot of gas, or braces for the kids teeth, or food on the table… or Disneyland.

I believe everyone should make some effort to conserve, me, I ride my bike whenever possible which is about 15k miles a year. You know … you rode.

Holy cow! Is there anything you nasty little attack dogs won’t hate given the opportunity? These people are getting better gas mileage, meaning we have to buy less oil from those theocratic Saudis, and you have a problem with some city promoting this? Why the kne-jerk stupidity in the face of anything and anyone concerned with protecting the environment? It’s completely irrational, and just plan stupid. Let’s be clear: no one is saying that you have to do anything, or give up any of your precious money, or live in a city taht want to promote hybrids. So why do any of you care?

I know it’s not just the “green” thing. You folks will attack anythign when Mr. Beck gives the command. It’s part of your programming. I bet if The Blaze posted an article about how the Employee of the Month at Arby’s gets a special parking spot, there would be similar overblown anger.

Good marketing ? … I will NOT shop or support any business that discrimates on the false God of “green” … they don’t need me or my money if they have it for signs and restricting parking due to vehicle type .. we have some stores that have smaller spaces do to the layout of the parking lot in a few areas..if they designate those as “green” instead of small car and they lose my business and I will tell them why.. It is bad enough that they do that.

ITs just like everything else associated with the green movement. Somebody somewhere has to subsidize the program to make it work. In this case they are trying to entice (bribe) people with choice parking spots. The whole green movement is a DAMN FRAUD. IF people wanted the cars they would buy them. They want SUV’s…that’s why they buy them. Keep it up greenies…I will continue to drive the biggest damn pickup with the biggest damn motor that I can find. You know what you can do with your hybrids. IF the government can’t bribe us into the green movement they will eventually force us. All I can say is Bring it on.

Now consider this little factoid. Over at Autoblog from Engaget’s website there is a True Hybrid vehicle like the Chevy Volt. It is built by Via Motors and called the E-REV Hybrid, http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/31/via-motors-e-rev-hybrid-trucks-power-your-commute-and-the-job-si/

They have a video about the technology, but my question is when will they start using Diesel/bio-Diesel engines to run these hybrids? The Trains you see hauling our LCD’s and cars across the country do. Diesels engine design is best used at idle to create energy…

      Hey PublusPencilMan

You had better wake up bubba…You are deceived to say the least. It doesn’t have a damn thing to do with better gas mileage and a greener planet or less oil from Saudi. Heck we could open up all the known oil field in this country and turn off the faucet to Saudi in short order. Ever wonder why we don’t. I mean we saty dependent don’t we? Its just more government control of your life. Take for instance energy rates. It is a know fact when people started finding ways to cut their energy usage that local municipal utility companies started loosing mucho bucks because of the decreased usage. Great you say! Not so fast! What did the utility companies do? That raised the rates so as not to loose the revenue. It doesn’t have a damn thing to do with anything but control. But seems you are a good little subject so just march in lock step to whatever they say. One day (if and when) you wake up it will be too late for you. People like you make it possible for the progressives to stay in office and succeed with their agenda.

Research has already proven that the gas mileage gained by a Hybrid versus disposing of the battery after an average 4-5 year span is upsidedown when comparing on the “Green” scale. We used to make vehicles that got over 40 miles a gallon in the 80′s, I bought a 85 Tercel that got about 45 miles a gallon. What happened to those vehicles? Also look at VW, they have a diesel engine that gets about 55 mpg and produces less emissions than a normal vehicle and doesn’t have a huge battery pack that needs disposed. The “Green” movement has simply decided electric is the only way to go and everything else be damned.
Now in comparison to the extra amount you spend for the Hybrid, the end of life disposal for the batteries and the fact that Prius comes with a dental dam and a subscription to O magazine, I would say Hybrid owners deserve that spot next to the handicap, real men can walk the extra few feet, let the mangina’s have their spots.

Isn’t it counter intuitive to drive a small car to Home Depot? I drive the largest vehicle I can to put the seats in the back down because I usually buy large items. Won’t Home Depot be encouraging people that buy small items only? I would love to see the look on the faces of people that drive their Prius to pick up molding or baseboards and common sense kicks in and they figure out it won’t fit in the car. Same with Best Buy and a hotel? Does the hotel rent by the hour and not to travelers who load their cars up to go on vacation?

“Green” is the religion that replaces Christianity:
The order of importance in “green” goes like this:

      1. Inanimate objects (rocks, etc.)
      2. Plants
      3. Animals
      4. Humans

Allow “green” elites to control the world, add in their eugenics agenda, and it becomes apparent what immense danger we humans face.

@NEVERENDING What does private business giving special parking privileges have to do with the Obama Administration? Unless they forced these business to allot X amount of parking spaces for hybrids, what does this have to do with the Administration?

I dislike President Obama and the whole progressive agenda but I’m tired of everyone pulling everything in and blaming something that had nothing to do with this. If it business wants to allocate certain parking spots for certain people, they should. If it‘s local Government they shouldn’t, at least without the consent of the residence.

It’s sad that they mentioned Nashville, I leave close to there. But to tie in local government and federal government just because you hate President Obama is just ridiculous.

I am sick and tired of people accusing me about buying a Prius as a statement on Global Warming. First of all I do not believe in Global Warming, Second I am a non-conformist I do not follow trends thirdly I am on a very tight budget does it not make sense to buy a car that is good on gas mileage, Fourth the dealers in Orlando are offering incredible deals for (and not tax credits) for buying Prius’. I had to drive behind some obnoxious driver who had a bumper sticker that read ONLY
A..HOLES DRIVE ..P CARS. Think that might have been a disgruntled worker for the American car maker or just a provacateur. Whatever…as a metaphor…if your going to buy a horse you better buy one that is young and in good health so it will carry you for a few years. It’s a choice not a statement.

As long as we support discrimination based on anything but hard work on any level we will never mature as a society.

NEVER are these spots even 1/2 full and 1/2 of the cars parked there aren’t even handicapped people using them.. so people that aren’t handicapped have just STOPPED shopping at these stores.. Now should they decide that only the rich that can afford a Hybrid car can have them will cost them MORE customers..
