Hyperinflation History: Visitors Snap Up 100 Trillion Zimbabwe Bank Notes

Hyperinflation History: Visitors Snap Up 100 Trillion Zimbabwe Bank Notes
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Western visitors to Zimbabwe are looking for zeros. They’re snapping up old, defunct Zimbabwe bank notes, most notably the one hundred trillion Zimbabwe dollar bill, as an economic souvenir.

The one hundred trillion Zimbabwe dollar bill, which at 100 followed by 12 zeros is the highest denomination, now sells for $5, depending on its condition. That bill and others — among them millions, billions and trillions, were abandoned nearly two years ago, when the American dollar became legal tender in the hopes of killing off the record inflation that caused all those zeros.

“I had to have one,” said Janice Waas on a visit to the northwestern resort town of Victoria Falls. “The numbers are mind bending.” She got her so-called “Zimdollar” in pristine condition, from a street vendor who usually sells African carvings.

“It’s perfect if you like puzzles, calculus and things like Rubik’s Cube,” she said.

Janice’s husband Thomas Waas, a physicist and engineer from Germany, said if the population of the world is 7 billion people, every single person could be a given thousands of old Zimbabwe dollars from this single 100 trillion note.

Janice Waas said Westerners were buying the bills for their curiosity value. An Australian wanted one to display in his local bar back home.

Street vendors said visitors had been so intrigued by the Zimbabwe bills that they were now running out of them, two years after a power sharing deal between longtime ruler President Robert Mugabe and the former opposition leader, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, made the old currency redundant.

Visitors from countries familiar with hyperinflation, such as the Congo and other impoverished states in the region and in South America, showed less interest in the highly marked bills. Instead, most bought curios and artifacts, said vendor Lloyd Phiri, speaking on his mobile phone in Victoria Falls.

At the height of Zimbabwe‘s economic meltdown in 2008 when Zimbabwe’s world record inflation was running into the billions in percent annually and prices were climbing each hour, the 100 trillion bill scarcely bought a cart of groceries.

Teachers reported the printing of bank notes from millions to billions and then trillions skewed their pupils’ sense of numeracy, making them fail to grasp the realities of numbers.

On one geography field trip, students scoffed at being told granite rocks swept over Zimbabwe by ancient glaciers were 700 million years old. That time frame seemed insignificant.

Back then in 2008, 700 million Zimbabwe dollars bought a loaf of bread.

Scientists and physicists estimate the number of atoms in the universe at 10 to the power of 80 — 10 followed by 80 zeros.

During the worst of Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown and hyperinflation, Zimbabwe’s highest money denominations were logged at 10 to the power of 25 — 10 followed by 25 zeros — or the equivalent of nearly one third of the number of atoms estimated in the universe.

The central bank then sliced off several zeros, but large transactions were still calculated in quadrillions (15 zeros) and quintillions (18 zeros) until the demise of the local currency.

If you are delayed at an airport during your Zimbabwe trip, play the numbers game, advises Waas, the physicist.

He posed this challenge.

“If the pyramids in Egypt are 5,000 years old, there are 155 billion seconds in 5,000 years and 1,000 billion make a trillion. So how many years are there in 100 trillion seconds?” he said.

Waas said he was still waiting for the correct answer from friends and fellow visitors in Zimbabwe.

    Does this sound familiar?

    An excerpt from this book:

    http://www.amazon.com/Reality-Money-Federal-Reserve-Stephen/dp/1450553397/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1293990276&sr=8-1

(In the early 1930′s, bankers, the only source of new money and credit, deliberately refused loans to industries, stores, and farms. Payments on existing loans were required, however, and money rapidly disappeared from circulation. Goods were available to be purchased, jobs were waiting to be done, but the lack of money brought the nation to a standstill. By this simple ploy, America was put into a “depression”, and the greedy bankers took possession of hundreds of thousands of farms, homes, and business properties. The people were told “times are hard” and “money is short.” Not understanding the system, they were cruelly robbed of their earnings, their savings, and their property.)

Now this day: the bankers are just printing more fiat money and putting us into a deflation that will kill us and make us to be forever slaves. We are slaves to these elite criminals, and we must have the knowledge and understanding to fight for our liberty once again through this knowledge and only vote for those men and woman who are brave enough to end the usury. It may take going without and helping each other out to get by, but we mustn’t believe the lies anymore.

AH YES!! The Federal Reserve Money Jews are taking their profits once again. My parents both lived through the Great Depression, and told me just how it all was actually accomplished, and by whom. Jefferson warned us about “Central Banks” being more dangerous to Liberty than Standing Armies. But, we didn’t listen then, and still won’t. So here we go again, only this time it would appear they have become too greedy for their own good, and their whole Ponzi Scheme is about to collapse their house of cards and phony paper money.

      WACO,

Actually, LONG BEFORE it gets to that point. When things just begin to get bad, the BENEVOLENT GOVERNMENT folks DHS/FEMA will be at your door, to “REDISTRIBUTE” that which you have “HOARDED” and transfer it to those that didn’t, but really need/deserve it now. Under Federal Law (SEE FEMA) the Government has the right and the power to take any and all supplies, goods, gear, assets, everything that you own, including your home, and transfer them to whomsoever they deem as needing them more. In an EMERGENCY of course.

If you have a problem with the concept of punching .30 cal. holes through uniforms with little Stars and Stripes on them, and hired Government Goons inside them, best just give all your gear to somebody that doesn’t share your tender sensibilities.

This is coming soon, matter not what any of the Elected Felons decide to do or not do. They can not “FIX” this mess anymore. The window of opportunity for preventative repair has long since closed. Barring the “Second Coming” we are all screwed.

I’m no economy expert but I know others who are. I personally believe them and for myself I cannot see how they could be wrong. I cannot see a good outcome of nation States defaulting in the Europeon Union. Calif is on the ropes and Jerry Brown says the situation is worse than what he thought. You think? Are heads just now being pulled out of the sand. Apparantly so!!!

There is a temptation to put ones head back in the sand and just hope for the best without changing anything. That would constitute self inflicted wounds. You must now change your lifestyles. Spend less save more. By only what you really need. Yea I know its hard.

The US is in dangerous straights like we have not seen before in a generation. We are quickly becoming the bad guy in the world and I don’t like the looks of it. The blame for the next big drop in the worlds econ affairs will be blamed on us. We are printing money and told others to spend more as well. Others are now seeing like Britain that this is madness and they are trying to hit the brakes on a very icy slope, the slide is gradual so its not all in one day but just like the vid posted here with the 20 car pile up, same is happening in relation to the econ. People are climbing that icy slope knowing darn well they are gonna slide right back down that hill. Crash!!

When the housing market went kaput, I saw newbys come into my hardhit area and pick up 3800sqft homes only 3 years old for 417K which originally sold in the mid 600k range. Those homes are now around the 373k mark since they purchased them in 2007 and were as low as 352K in 2008/09. They havent come up much and we expect a further slide in value this year. Its funny how we act towards others when we think we got a better deal than the poor slub who got themselves stuck in a upside down mortgage now find themselves in the same position. How does it feel? Well it totally sucks for sure but look at it this way. Your have the deed of trust and its your home and not a rental. You’ve got a safe place to live and thats a heck of a lot more than most people in this crazy upside world.

    2011 US Budget Chopping Process

Place Social Security and Medicare funds in a lockbox,
and prohibit congress from ever touching it again

    Estimate fiscal year revenue

Multiply by 90% to eliminate the ubiquitous liberal rosy scenarios

Deduct interest payable on the national debt off the top

    Budget for national defense

Freeze entitlement spending and enrollment, let attrition do the cutting

Make everything else fit in whatever remains, if anything is left over:

Cut White House budget 50%, eliminate czars

Subpoena department/agency heads to justify their existence

Permanently cut all nonessential departments, agencies and programs
(about ¾ths of them can go – that would make Milton Friedman smile)

Cut federal employee salaries 25% and benefits 50%

Phase out 25% of remaining federal workforce over 3 months
    (union jobs first)

    (Just to begin with)

When I called for it to be sent, the guy taking the info asked if my annual income was 100 grand or more. I told him yes, in Zimbabwean currency. The only thing holding our country together right now are the sleepy people, the people in denial, and the Chinese that can’t afford at the moment for the paper to be worthless. I believe the big plan of the progressives is to do away with paper all together. Everyone is already familiar with plastic, and with plastic, the New World Order can track each and everyone of us. It’s already been going on. At any given time you can be located, by cell phones, purchases, medical visits, you name it. Your being tracked and classified…

There is no doubt it is coming. There is also something good that can come from the people that are refusing to wake up. And that is, they are still buying crap they don’t need which can benefit you. Now, Mr. Beck has been right about the food storage and getting rid of stuff you don’t need, a little late on drawl, but better late than never. I will be a little more specific.

First and for most, GET RID OF EVERYTHING YOU DON’T NEED!, and do not buy anything you don’t need, and the stuff you do need, don’t buy it from retail places, “Be Frugal”. Refer back to the Bible “There is a time to gather stones, and there is a time to cast stones away” this is what God was talking about. Sell everything you don’t need, and pay down your debt, your goal should be, to be debt free. Buying gold and silver is good, but there are things that will be worth more than gold. A prior post was correct “Lead”, ammunition will be worth more than gold. Medical supplies, antibiotics, survival gear, gas mask and chemical suites, water purification chemicals, common sense necessity’s “make a list” and make a plan, a hunker down plan and a evacuation plan.
Hyper inflation’s in the past were different from the one we are facing now because when it has happened in the past the majority of the people were more knowledgeable when it came to feeding and taking care of themselves. If and when it happens in this country it will truly be the time for the rednecks to have the last laugh, we will survive. If you are not a redneck, become one or befriend some quick. Now I know you don’t need to be a redneck to survive, but these are the only people I know that will cut the liver out of a stag, eat it raw and wash it down with clear liquor, and consider it to be having a good time. Education will ultimately be your best friend, and remember what Franklin said: “It’s better to be prepared and not needed, than to need it and not be prepared”

Darn it for a second I thought I was right when I saw Doctor’s/Labor answer … Then I realized, we both made the same error.. I was figuring our for 1 trillion seconds, not, 100 trillion seconds So those of you who listed 3,225,806.452 days are correct..

Doctor’s Labor – You are correct for what you listed, but you listed it for the calculation of 1 trillion, as I did originally…

Just like the government grant I seen to make a bike trail in the area… It went from 3.5 million to $660,000, clerical error in the first estimate is all…. You know, it’s just our tax money, not there’s. I am sure they would have made the 3.5 million disappear on some naked statue of a man and a monkey having sex on top of a water fountain… you know, good rare art work exposure for our children to be exposed to ….
a few 100 million here to study ant’s , then a few 100 billion there studying rabbits sex behavior, and then before you know it , 14 Trillion in debt .. no big deal… we can just print 100 trillion dollar bills like, what is it in Zimbabwe. Heck, what are we worried about, imagine how much our 100 trillion dollar bill would be worth in Zimbabwe ..lol ..?<? Geez ..
May we stand strong together, not let them divide us, an save the last piece of Earth where the spirit is left in it's natural state… FREE God bless you all and Happy New Year

I’ll take just 1 of those Zimbabwe dollars, now. No, not the 100 Trillion one, but a 1 Zimbabwe bank note of the same era.

Inflation works the other way, too, right? If my 1 Zimbabwe bank note inflates, then the paper it’s printed on becomes priceless? :)

Just playing, kids. Paper money’s real worth is always that of paper.

I find this thread fascinating! Did you guys (ladies?) notice anything strange?…………. We had a rather large difference here somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,193,xxx.xx. I saw no name calling, no insults, no personal attacks, Classical Libertarian pointed out a much larger problem with the whole thing and still no problems among those involved. Believe it or don’t: a couple of us admitted to being in error. Yep – that’s right we were wrong!!!!

If I were a right wing nut job or (so help me!) a member of the Tea Party I would think that maybe those on the left have no math skills or no interest in such a mundane subject.

No real point here I just thought it was nice to be able to hash something out in peace. Good start to the New Year! Thanks.

      Answer:

      # of 5000 year periods (as represented by seconds) in 1 trillion seconds:
      1 trillion / 155 billion = 6.451612903

5000 years times the # of 5000 year periods in 1 trillion seconds

      5000 * 6.451612903 = 32258.06452 years in 1 trillion seconds

Schact echoes the textbook lie that Weimar inflation was caused when the German government printed its own money. However, in his 1967 book The Magic of Money, Schact let the cat out of the bag by revealing that it was the PRIVATELY-OWNED Reichsbank, not the German government, that was pumping new currency into the economy. Thus, the PRIVATE BANK caused the Weimar hyper-inflation.

Like the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Reichsbank was overseen by appointed government officials, but was operated for private gain. What drove the wartime inflation into hyperinflation was speculation by foreign investors, who sold the mark short, betting on its decreasing value. In the manipulative device known as the short sale, speculators borrow something they don’t own, sell it, and then “cover” by buying it back at the lower price.

Whenever you increase the number of that which represents wealth (not the wealth itself), that is an inflation of the representation of wealth.

So, printing money definitely causes inflation. Always has.

Note that inflation only pertains to the representations of wealth, and not the wealth itself. This is why Glenn is saying to just make stuff; Create actual wealth, for crying out loud, America!

This means you have to ignore the EPA and all regulations (e.g., the deep-water drilling moratorium, Net Neutrality type regulations, and Cap-and-Trade type regulations) – the court system is to be used to punish criminal acts, not regulations, because regulations treat someone as guilty before they’ve been given a fair trial.

      @tower7femacamp

“But you do agree the federal reserve is Private and can only create DEBT?’

If you mean private in the sense that Unions can be private. Both are the ideas of Progressives, and both serve a Marxist end.

And contrary to “Leveraged Sellout”, banks certainly do not “straight create” wealth. I don’t know that they necessarily must create debt, though.

I mean, in the barter system, a profit is made by both parties of a transaction when they sell their excess goods for that which they don’t have; So, assuming a given currency is used to exacly represent the barter system (or as best it possibly can), then banks can help the private citizens by storing their wealth in “non-perishable” form.

But I think it’s different with the Federal Reserve, in that their purpose seems to be to hide the transactions of those with Progressive agendas – for example, selling our debts to private and government people (Socialists, Marxists, Communists, etc.) who do not share the interests of what is supposed to be the American free market Capitalist economy.

If so, then it would seem that the net effect of the Federal Reserve is to serve a Progressive/Central Planning/Big Government agenda , rather than that of the private sector.
