Screaming Flight Attendant Freaks Out on Plane: ‘I Am Not Responsible for Crashing This Plane!’

An American Airlines flight attendant on a plane from Dallas to Chicago apparently had a bit of a breakdown as the plane was preparing to take off — a breakdown that very nearly derailed the entire takeoff — as she apparently told passengers that a “technical difficulty” had taken place, even though no such difficulty existed, and refused to back down from the assertion, screaming repeatedly about it as she was escorted off the plane.
Q13 Fox has a fairly comprehensive explanation of the incident:
An American Airlines flight attendant disrupted a flight Friday morning as it was about to take off from Dallas Fort/Worth en route to Chicago, saying over the aircraft intercom system that the plane was going to crash, alluding to 9/11 terrorist attacks and ranting about the airline’s bankruptcy reorganization, passengers said.[...]
Two flight attendants were injured in the incident and were taken to a local hospital. No passengers were injured, and they were never in danger, an airline spokeswoman said.
The flight attendant who caused the commotion continued to scream as she was handcuffed by police and placed into a police car, passengers on the flight told the Tribune after they exited the plane at Chicago O’Hare.
Fox News adds this:
“We are not taking off,” the female flight attendant said as the plane was taxiing on the runway, according to the passengers. “We’re having technical difficulties. We are heading back to the gate.”
Although another crew member told passengers to disregard her warning, the flight attendant kept ranting about technical problems.[...]
“Captain,” she said. “I am not responsible for crashing this plane.
Video was also recorded of the incident. In it, the flight attendant can be heard shrieking something that sounds like “Get out of the way.” The rest of her screams are inaudible. Readers can watch below:

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 8:43pmShe’s bipolar and was off her meds and had a severe manic episode. The hellacious screaming is often part of that. I had a relative go through that, screaming in public that she was Jesus. This is “Exorcist” stuff and not fun to watch. She should be fired for safety reasons, and flight crew cabin attendants should be screened for stability the same as the pilots are … currently they are not screened.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 9:18amSorry, but her being “bipolar and off her meds” doesn’t explain what happened at all.
In fact, it’s quite possible that her meds are responsible for her erratic behavior.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 2:50pmWhen did public ranting become grounds for being pinned to the ground by a group of by-standers?
Isn’t that assault and kidnapping if it happens anywhere except on a plane?
Only “acceptable” speech is allowed within 1,000 feet of an airport, subway, train station, bus station, freeway or crowded thoroughfare because the terrorists have officially won.
And if you do see something suspicious, you’d better remain silent or men will pin you to the ground and haul you off to a cage for daring to say it out loud.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 5:04pmShe was telling the truth. There WAS a technical problem. It is obvious that a screw had come loose causing a critical component to fall off its rocker and run on its rims. Had the plane actually lifted off, this would have resulted in at least a partial collapse of the flooring, requiring the stewardess to go about the cabin without a full deck.

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 7:00pmI feel sorry for this woman. She’s probably been working for hours on end, been snapped at by a frustrated passenger for something that wasn’t remotely her fault, and to top it all off she hears an odd thumping sound as they are leaving the airport. AND NO ONE IS LISTENING!!!!! Should she have been removed? Yes. Should she be evaluated and helped? Yes. Does she deserve our cruel and (let’s face it) ignorant comments? Not in the least. Please, let’s assume this poor woman needs a vacation.

Posted on March 9, 2012 at 6:45pmPeople we do not know this women or what she is going through in life. We don’t know if she was flying during 911 or what her story is. I know for a fact that Flight Attendants are often over worked and underpaid. Taking and receiving crap from everyone while not being respected for their jobs or their duty as a crew. My wife an ex flight attendant would come home sometimes in tears with what people said or tried to do slapping her butt just being mean and not respectful. It happens all the time. Look at what’s his name not putting his phone away just listen and respect them and their job. This lady lost it but how can you rush to judgment when you do not know her. For those of you who mock and poke fun what is funny about a person loosing it? Do you hear the screams? Do you here the fear in this women’s voice. Its not a joke
Matt. 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 1:35amWhat you say may be true. That said- I have little respect for flight attendants anymore. One of the last times I flew it was from Kuwait to Dulles and my 7-year old son ended up throwing up on himself and in his seat. Flight attendants would do nothing to help me. They brought me a napkin. One napkin. And they never came back to collect it. So, I made my way to the bathroom to throw it away and was scolded because I walked through the galley with a vomit-drenched napkin. And this was business-class. I will never forget that. And now with all the TSA crap, I may never fly again. Finally, I don’t care if she was bipolar and off her meds. If the pilot had gone off his rocker and it was discovered that he was on pain medication would you still have the same sympathy as for the flight attendant who didn’t take her meds? If a person can be held responsible for a car accident because they were on tylenol 3 at the time, then the flight attendant should be held responsible for her actions when not on the meds she is suppose to take.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 12:56amUpon first hearing of this, I immediately felt for this woman. Because I knew there are cruel people out there who will use another person’s misfortune to mock and laugh at. Fortunately there were some kind passengers who, after restraining her, at least tried to reason with her and comfort her. Of course I also understand that passengers on the plane would be worried that something really MIGHT BE wrong with the plane. That would scare me. So I hope the pilot explained that the plane was okay.

Posted on March 11, 2012 at 11:53ammost likely she made a mistake-like not knowing her voice was being broadcast-and instead of admitting it her pride prevented her from admitting she made an error-she resorted to crazy behavior. better to be perceived as having a mental breakdown then as having made a mistake. that’s why she deflected to talk of 9-11anything to evade any mistake she might have made. nothing but pride-mental illness gets sympathy-not being incompetant or in error.why is her name not released? had it been a passenger it would have.

Posted on March 10, 2012 at 2:47pmMauiJohnny,
Like I said, there are probably many people you have entrusted with your life or the lives of those you love who have bipolar. The issue is not that she has bipolar – the issue is that she is either unmedicated or undermedicated. If she were well-controlled, I would not have a problem with her flying the plane! (provided she was a pilot!) Nor would I have a problem with her taking care of my kids. Similarly, I would not want a flight attendant (or babysitter) who had uncontrolled diabetes or seizure disorder. But controlled with the proper medication, I would take no issue. Our society seems to need to separate “mental illness” from “medical illness” when in fact they should be viewed similarly.
In times of stress, people with illness (bipolar, seizure, diabetes) often need adjustments in medication. Perhaps this woman was under a lot of stress and needed a dose change? Whatever the case, she needs our compassion and understanding.
And should your child ever be diagnosed with a mental illness, I hope you don’t just hand him a list of “approved job settings”, but instead teach him the importance of taking his medication and vigilantly monitoring the disease, and encourage him in the direction of his dreams.
