Yet another shocking video showing the poor treatment of animals on a U.S. farm has been released by an animal rights advocacy group. Hiring an undercover investigator to examine the Wyoming Premium Farms facility in Wheatland, Wyo., the Humane Society of the United States pulled together a video that shows hogs being beaten, piglets being swung by their legs and injured animals neglected, among other horrors.
According to the HSUS statement, at one point a worker sat and bounced on the back of a sow with a broken hind leg as it squealed in pain.
“I am sickened and outraged by what I’ve seen, and any right-thinking person will have the same reaction,” Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS, said in a statement. “The shocking abuse at this facility shows why so many Americans are calling for reforms in the pork industry.”
Watch the four-minute video inside the farm (Content Warning: Graphic and cruel treatment of animals shown and some strong language):
The video states the farm is a supplier to Tyson Foods, but the Huffington Post received a response from the company denying this claim (but then clarified one of its subsidiaries has purchased pigs from the farm):
Tyson Foods spokesman Worth Sparkman emailed a statement to HuffPost, saying the company was “appalled” by the video and denying any connection between the Wyoming farm and the pork processed by Tyson. “Tyson Foods does not buy any of the hogs raised on this farm for our pork processing plants. We do have a small, but separate hog buying business that buys aged sows; however, these animals are subsequently sold to other companies and are not used in Tyson’s pork processing business,” the statement said.
Sparkman clarified in a follow-up email: “A company that we own has purchased hogs from the farm. We will not purchase from this farm until we’ve had a chance to investigate.”

(Photo: Humane Society of the United States)
The Huffington Post goes on to note that Tyson requires all suppliers to be certified through the Pork Quality Assurance Plus program, but HSUS only last month filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission that the program makes false claims of quality assurance. Here’s what the National Pork Producers Council had to say about the complaint:
“The FTC complaint is the latest attack by animal-rights activists on America’s hog farmers, an assault that seems obviously in response to the U.S. pork industry’s strident opposition to congressional legislation that would allow federal bureaucrats to tell farmers how to raise and care for their animals.”
The NPPC has also issued a statement about HSUS’s recent undercover video of the Wyoming farm:
Providing humane and compassionate care for their pigs at every stage of life is one of the ethical principles to which U.S. pork producers adhere. U.S. pork producers are committed to caring for animals in a way that protects their well-being. Just as it is to others, mistreatment of animals is appalling to pork producers. We do not defend and will not accept mistreatment of animals.
NPPC understands that the farm in question is taking immediate steps to address the situation, including an unannounced inspection of the facility by the farm’s consulting veterinarian. Individuals responsible for willful abuse of animals must be held accountable.
The Huffington Post reported the farm in question was a breeding farm with 5,000 sows and even touted providing a “clean” environment to rear the pigs. The Wyoming Premium Farms website appears to have since been taken offline or is temporarily down.
Last June, the Blaze reported a similar case of animal cruelty revealed in an undercover video of a pig farm in Iowa. The Huffington Post notes that as of March 2012, Iowa has made it illegal to access a farm “under false pretenses,” meaning tactics for obtaining revealing videos such as this will be harder to come by in the state.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 12:51pmAmen to that. You would never see this kind of cruelty and behavior on an average citizen’s pig farm. This kind of behavior is a result of corporations taking control of the food industry during the Great Depression. Having grown up in a livestock ranching community I can say that most livestock farmers treat their livestock with love and respect; not only because those animals are their lively-hood but also because those type of Americans have common decency.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 5:16pmI am not an animal rights activist or anything, but in the past few years, I’ve been learning a lot about how the health of the animals that we eat affects the health of the food that we eat. That’s why grass fed beef is a lot healthier than corn fed beef (cows aren’t made to eat corn). That’s why the shells of cage free organic eggs are much thicker than conventional eggs (and are healthier as well).
I doubt that this is one isolated case. It’s not just limited to pigs either.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 6:08pmYou think this is bad, go to a farm that brags about their free range chicken eggs. The chickens follow cows, horses and even other chickes and then eat their poop. After I saw this I had to quit eating eggs. Back in the 60′s I worked on a large chicken farm and fed the chickens feed and a water line went down the whole building. Once a month we went out at night and found the sick birds that were weesing. Nice clean eggs. I only buy store bought and save $.75 a dozen. Same thing on grass fed cattle as an advertizement – duu – here in Oklahoma and Texas that is all they get 8 months out of the year.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 7:42pmAs for myself I generally do not eat pork as it is not a healthy choice for so many reasons. Hog meat is full of bad collesteral and other non healthy additives such as all the antibiotics that are not good for human consumption, additionally all processed pork that is prepackaged has enough sodium ( salt ) to
Report Post »raise the blood pressure to astronomical levels. And as well as hypertension it also (salt ) is destructive
to the kidney and liver. So what to do. Abstain from Pork and then the corporate hog farms will simply close. Or shut up about the poor hog as your sounding like Liberals. Ya All are making me sick. That Hog is being raised to be slaughtered and turned into your savory links, bacon, and ribs.
Stop sounding like RINOS . I would venture a guess that most of the poor hog posters here have never once caught a whiff of the foul smell that a hog farm produces. I can promise you this if you ever smell a hog farrowing shed you will most likely think twice about eating Swine. And start the BBQ I have some nice fat Hog ribs all basted up and ready to grill. Finger licking good.. Actually revolting. If you eat more than 10 ounces of Swine meat in a given week your health is at risk and especially so if you are a African from America. Pig meat is killing the American African. Kidney failure is the result of Diabetic condition. This condition is brought on by a terrible diet. And then the kidneys fail and there you go on dialisyis ( sp ) for years at a cost of $ 15,000.

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 11:35amI have visited this operation a few times. It was always well maintained…minimal smell and very clean. My relatives have only two hogs and the stench will make you pass out. Not this place…it was very tidy and the pigs were treated very well. I did not witness ANY cruelty. There are no illegal workers on this operation. If you see foreigners in this video it’s because americans are too lazy for this type of dirty and demanding work, regardless they’re all legal. Personally, i think it’s a set up. I am behind you 100% Premium Farms!!!!

Posted on May 18, 2012 at 11:55amI have visited this operation a couple of times and my observations were complete opposite. It’s always clean with minimal smell and the animals are well taken care of. I did not witness any cruelty during my visits. If you see foreigners working here it’s because Americans are too prissy for a dirty, demanding job like this. This operation is also “green” so we thank you for that Premiun Farms!
Keep in mind that pigs are not pets, we don’t take them to bed with us or put clothes on them. They are raised strictly for food…they are killed in order to feed us, so please stop with this cruelty nonsense. Personally, i think Premium Farms is being set up.
As a side note…i’ve never worked for Premium Farms or Tyson nor have i ever accepted any payments from this operation. I am just an observer reporting what i’ve witnessed during my visits.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 1:02pmWhile I will agree with you that we need to blame those who are responsible for things like this, laying the blame solely on the large factory farms – while elevating small family farms – is ignorant if you ask me.
I grew up on a ‘family farm’ and was around enough other ‘family’ livestock (pigs, chickens, cows, goats, sheep) operations that I will disagree fully that this “only” happens because of the factory farming mentality. I can tell you that small operations are plagued by such acts as much, if not more so due to even less eyes watching them, than large factory farms.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a PETA or animal rights activist. I fully recognize that the reason we don’t pay $15 for a pound of ground beef is because of large factory operations. (it’s simple supply and demand math – there are just not enough “small” operations to feed the demand, there never was enough “ma-n-pop“ farms with a few dozen hogs to feed billions of people who demand ”meat” products) In short, my point is that we cannot do without the large factory farm operations so long as demand stays the same.
And I like my bacon, I like my burgers, I love my steaks… just like billions of others people. So the factory farms will always have a customer. Targeted enforcement, consumer pressure, and proper education of employees will have a far better result than the “blame the factory farm” game spewed out by many.

They are mentally sick people who should not be allowed to work around animals. To economically feed all of the people who want to eat pork, we have these large massive farm operations. The problem here is commercialization of food production. When this was handled by private farms, they treated their animals with respect, knowing a healthy animal produces more, and better quality. But we have taken it out of private hands, and made it a for profit interest. We de-humanized the industry, and made it another assembly line production product…to maximize profit. And since corporations do not have souls…they lack compassion…so the destroy all that is good, right and holy for money.
