‘I Am the Real Joker’: James Holmes Copycat Threatens Washington, DC

When “The Dark Knight” director Chris Nolan created Heath Ledger’s “Joker” character, it‘s obvious that he didn’t mean to inspire a raft of deranged people to pick up weapons as part of a twisted project to imitate the behavior of a fictional mass-murdering clown. Yet that may be the trend that is emerging, following the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, which now appears to have inspired a good share of copycats. From Washington, DC’s NBC news channel:

“We believe a significant threat has been averted,” officials said in a press conference today about the search of Neil Edwin Prescott’s home — where police and ATF officers found numerous guns and ammunition.

Police from several jurisdictions searched the home in Crofton, Md., Thursday night after alleged threats referencing the “Joker” were made earlier in the week.

Law enforcement sources told News4 that Prescott made a more than one phone call Monday to a coworker, in which he made threats toward his employer — a subcontractor for Pitney Bowes — which was ready to fire him. Prescott was upset about prospect of losing his job and he told his coworker, “I’m gonna load my guns and blow everybody up,” according to a search warrant.

Law enforcement sources tell News4′s Pat Collins that Prescott made threats — saying something to the effect of, “You don’ t know who the real Joker is; I am the real Joker.” When Pitney Bowes heard this alleged threat, they called authorities.

Neil Edwin Prescott

Even if Prescott had no intention of actually doing anything, his behavior and possessions indicated otherwise. Early reports indicated that he had 13 guns registered in his name, a number which dwarfed by the actual,  terrifying arsenal that police seized, which included over 20 weapons, as well as 40 steel boxes containing 8 different kinds of ammunition. Prescott was also picked up by police while wearing a shirt that read, “Guns don’t kill people. I do.”

Prescott has not been charged with anything, having not committed any crimes yet, but is being evaluated at a mental health facility in the DC area.

I have some liberal co-workers that know I have a nice collection of firearms, and I would not put it past one of them to “say” I made a threat even though I would never do such a thing.

Don’t be so quick to throw this guy under the bus. He may be dumb and he may have been beat with the ugly stick, but not necessarily guilty of making threats. Which could be the reason he hasn’t been charged.

You want a story? I have one for you but it is not a happy ending story.
I have a distant cousin that had to defend himself and his wife and child. They had someone break into their home and the intruder tried raping his wife right next to him in bed that night. needless to say he got out his gun and shot the guy and in doing so killed him. Understand this was clear self defense and he was protecting his family; but what happened? He got locked up in jail for about 8 years. because he killed the guy. the judge said that if he hadn’t killed the intruder then it would be considered self defense. He also told him that he should’ve called the cops. Are you F*^#@ing kidding me??!! Talk about F**ked up. So in other words We the People are NOT ALLOWED to defend ourselves because the cops have everything under control as we all know. Like that saying goes: When SECONDS matter, the police are only MINUTES away…

He sure spent a lot of money on rifles… I see a SCAR there worth $3k alone. Guess he should have spent a little more time working hard than participating in Rambo fantasies. Don’t get me wrong… that “terrifying arsenal” is not illegal to own, and I know a lot of sport shooters that have far similar firearm collections…but if you make those kind of threats over a job, you need some serious professional help , and to lose the right to purchase or own firearms for a while… probably a long while.

13 guns? That barely qualifies as a gun owner around here. At our trap and skeet club, quite a few guys have that many in the trunks of their cars all the time. BTW these guys shoot a few hundred shells each week, so having “thousands of rounds” of ammunition is typical around here. The same can be said for target shooters, too.

I’m sorry, but that does not look like a normal number of weapons for one person. One registered hunting type gun for hunting is OK. Maybe one for self defense if you can prove a special need and get approval. But 13? Since when does the number of guns you have determine how dangerous you are. Why is a guy with 21 guns more dangerous than somebody with 3. In the Army you only get 1. To limit the number of guns you can have makes no sense. It’s like saying that if I had 21 race cars, I would be a better race driver than Andretti.

      @ Plane
You, my friend are a sheep. Just like those poor souls in that movie theater who were caught unarmed and unprepared. They couldn’t protect themselves or their loved ones.

Many called 911 but the police didn’t arrive until the killing was over.

What will you do when someone breaks into your home bent on doing evil to you and your family? Call 911?

I could own more guns, but why?

Like someone told me when you won something, it owns you. Everything you own you have to preserver or it becomes junk.

Point is the government or some know nothing busybody should not tell someone how much of something they can own or have. Owning stuff is naturally self limiting due to sheer logistics

I have lived and worked in downtown Chicago for 19 years. Not once have I ever felt threatened. And yet I am supposedly living in the murder capital of the world. I simply do not go into the areas where the gang killings are. And no one is going to break into my home, since I live in a high rise condo and they would have to go through 4 doors and a doorman to get to me.

If you are feeling so insecure that you need 13 guns to feel safe, I suggest that you either move somewhere else that is safer, or get to the real cause of your fear via a mental health evaluation. Some people may have a legitimate need for a gun-mass gun ownership is not required, and since we can’t predict which of you will be the next one to snap and kill a dozen people, we are collectively better off if none of you have weapons to begin with.

I do draw my ideas from how guns are regulated elsewhere in the civilized world. We are no different than any other developed country, and our gun laws should be the same. I don’t care how we get there, but a massive tax on ammo is a good start. The rest can be done via executive order and well crafted laws that conform to Supreme Court decisions that allow reasonable restrictions on weapons.
I travel the world personally and in my business as a lawyer for a leading global casualty insurers in the world (sorry, working as a mythical Soros paid troll would require a six figure pay cut), I see how truly out of sync the US is with global values, including gu

OOOOOOOH! You d****ed RWNJ! I must be a liberal: I only have a total of 15, including a DEWAT StG44. ;-) It would have been fully operational, but as I was only 17 when I got it 45 years ago, I had to go the “Welded Shut” route. And, yes, it came via the USPS to my door. How freakin’ dangerous was that!!!!!??????

      @planecrashlaw

What an elitist, liberal POS you are. ‘I’m living just fine, and feel safe, I don’t care what anyone else has to go through, they can suck dirt.’ Your excuses are pathetic.

You remind me of the very liberal County Executive in Montgomery County that is VERY anti-guns BUT yet pays more than 300,000 a year to have THREE armed body guards follow him around! What a lying, hypocritical, deluded bunch of lefties you guys are.

Most people don’t own 13 guns to feel safe. Most people own 13 guns for the same reason woman buy 50 pairs of shoes. Let’s see. Limited editions, Collector’s edition, High end materials, Target shooting, skeet, trap, duck hunting, deer hunting, moose hunting, geese hunting, alligator hunting, self defense, property defense, ETC. There are many reason as why to own more than one type of gun. You can hunt deer with a buck shot, bird shot, or 30 caliber round. They don’t all feet into one gun. Your ignorance, arrogance, and blatant disregard for common sense is laughable. Maybe you need a mental evaluation, or better yet, an education (not taught by liberals).

As for the rest of the world. We’re INDEPENDENT AND FREE. We don’t follow the world.

Our right to keep and bear arms is a natural and fundamental right, secured by the LAW OF THE LAND. We’re the freest NATION in the world becuase CITIZENS are armed.

“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.” – G. Washington

“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” – Jefferson

“Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive.” – N. Webster

“One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance, is, by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep arms.” – Joseph Story

If the media would stop giving these morons the attention they crave, there would be no copycats.

But, the liberal media want to affect public opinion on gun ownership, so they try and further their agenda.

He made the threat. They did what they needed to do with him. He gets what he gets. Anyone ever hear of resentful people who lose their job and go back for revenge? It happens. He did it to himself.
