‘I Didn’t Even Graduate’: ‘PhD’ Comes Clean in Hilarious Obituary

Cancer Victim Val Pattersons Fake PhD Obituary Goes Viral: Admits He Never Graduated, Stole a Safe in 1971

(Photo: KSL)

Val Patterson’s obituary begins like many others. The cancer victim began by thanking his loving family and explaining his love for life, before stating that he lived by several mottoes.

This is where the reader gets the first impression that Patterson’s obituary might not be like the rest– the man’s first motto was “anything for a laugh,” the second was, “if you break it, I can fix it,” and his requirements for a job were: “1 – All glory, 2 – Top pay, 3 – No work.”

After that, Patterson reveals a litany of mischievous deeds dating back decades– including that he never actually earned his doctorate!

(Related: ‘He Enjoyed Guns, Cars, Booze, and Younger Women Until the Day He Died’: Unrepentant Obituary Deemed ‘Best Ever’)

While no one is encouraging theft or deception, the Huffington Post describes the man in somewhat overly-harsh terms.

“The family and friends of Val Patterson, it turns out, had a thief with bogus academic credentials on their hands,” HuffPo begins.  “The obituary, rife with grammatical errors, was published in the Salt Lake Tribune.”

Here‘s the second paragraph of Patterson’s first-person obituary:

…I have confessions and things I should now say. As it turns out, I AM the guy who stole the safe from the Motor View Drive Inn back in June, 1971. I could have left that unsaid, but I wanted to get it off my chest. Also, I really am NOT a PhD. What happened was that the day I went to pay off my college student loan at the U of U, the girl working there put my receipt into the wrong stack, and two weeks later, a PhD diploma came in the mail. I didn’t even graduate, I only had about 3 years of college credit. In fact, I never did even learn what the letters “PhD” even stood for. For all of the Electronic Engineers I have worked with, I’m sorry, but you have to admit my designs always worked very well, and were well engineered, and I always made you laugh at work. Now to that really mean Park Ranger; after all, it was me that rolled those rocks into your geyser and ruined it. I did notice a few years later that you did get Old Faithful working again. To Disneyland – you can now throw away that “Banned for Life” file you have on me, I’m not a problem anymore – and SeaWorld San Diego, too, if you read this. [Emphasis added]

To the “gang,” he says: “We grew up in the very best time to grow up in the history of America. The best music, muscle cars, cheap gas, fun kegs, buying a car for ‘a buck a year.’”

He continued: “TV was boring back then, so we went outside and actually had lives. We always tried to have as much fun as possible without doing harm to anybody – we did a good job at that.”

Patterson concludes with his life’s only regret:

My regret is that I felt invincible when young and smoked cigarettes when I knew they were bad for me. Now, to make it worse, I have robbed my beloved Mary Jane of a decade or more of the two of us growing old together and laughing at all the thousands of simple things that we have come to enjoy and fill our lives with such happy words and moments. My pain is enormous, but it pales in comparison to watching my wife feel my pain as she lovingly cares for and comforts me. I feel such the “thief” now – for stealing so much from her – there is no pill I can take to erase that pain.

[...]

If you knew me, remember me in your own way. If you want to live forever, then don’t stop breathing, like I did.

Mary Jane, Patterson’s wife of 33 years, confirmed for KSL that everything her husband said was true, to the best of her knowledge.

While one Huffington Post commenter remarked: “It sounds like he should have spent his last years in jail to me,” Arlene Navo of Texas said: “It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me appreciate my life and all the opportunity that it offers a bit more . . . Thank you.”

For all you sarcastic, negative people, I’d suggest that you go to the SLTrib website for the “rest of the story.” This guy was up front his whole life and never claimed to actually have a Ph.D. He didn‘t get jobs because he wasn’t a college graduate. In fact, he was an inventor and made it without a degree. Also, the police and the drive-in that he took the “antique” safe from knew about it. And, yes, he was banned for life from Disneyland, but you need to read why. The guy was straight and I, for one, wish I’d known him. Where do all the angry people in these comments come from? Shame on you.

Actually, he did, in fact, claim to have a PhD and had his job because of it. Personally, I don’t blame him, I blame his employer for not properly checking his credentials. But his co-workers thought he had a PhD which is why he “came clean.” If he never claimed to be one, there is nothing to come clean about.

It does say a lot about PHDs when someone that has little college is able to do the job of someone that requires one. I have friends with degrees and they come to me for advise and I have an A S degree. I find people with higher educations get dummer because they teach the common sense out of them. Glenn is right…..if you have never been touched by the colleges and universities you are better able to think outside the box.

His biggest regret says a lot about the man – thought he was “10 ft. tall and bullet proof” when he was young only to realize he had stolen years of growing old together with his wife. I too wish I could’ve known him – he loved life and had a blast what he was here on earth. Like that saying goes, “The purpose of life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave with a well-preserved body, but rather to Slide in Sideways, completely used up, yelling and screaming, what a ride!” — Author Unknown

I see alot of you judging this guy… Sure when you list the bad things like this you get the idea that this guy is some bad jerk who deserved his fate…

But the point most of you seem to be missing, is that many of these things “hurt” no-one… and even with that in mind, he still felt bad enough about it that he had to get it off his chest before he died… I am not condoning his actions… But seriously, he could have done MUCH worse… These relatively minor crimes are not much when you consider the length of an adults life… Its not like he did ALL of these things in one year…

After all, if you really think about ALL of the “bad” things you have done (and we all have some, none of us are as perfect as Obama… :-) ) I am sure you will come up with a nice little list yourself…

The fact that he felt guilty about these things says something about him… after all, many people that do things like this guy did NEVER feel guilty about it… At least in the end, he did…

Do you all think you will have to guts to admit your guilt to your family and friends on your deathbed? Because I bet, many of us will not…

He didn’t admit anything on his deathbed. He admitted to things in his obituary. If that’s “courage” then I guess you would look at suicide letters as pretty heroic and responsible. And to vindicate him by saying “he could have acted worse” is possibly the most idiotic way of owning up to your own actions. You‘re basically saying that it’s okay to break the law just as long as nobody gets hurt.

I do not understand how so many people can make such cruel comments about the death of a human being. Apparently the value of life has been lost on a large percent of the world population. This is how most Catholics and Protestant Christians tend to think:

“And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God–he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.”

If God exists, then I would expect that he would be a God of order. I’m still finding my religious beliefs but I have a feeling that if God exists then most “religious” people will not be making it to heaven.
