I ‘Go to Church Every Day’: Actor Mark Wahlberg Credits Faith for Turning His Life Around

Actor Mark Wahlberg likely surprised viewers when he appeared on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” last Friday to discuss a variety of issues — his faith, the importance of family, his work in the community and more.
Wahlberg, who spent time in jail as a teenager, has overcome many barriers — poverty and crime, among others. In fact, he calls his time behind bars after assaulting two individuals a wake-up call that led him to take positive steps to improve his life.
Below, watch Wahlberg address his jail time on Anderson Cooper’s daytime show late last month:
In his interview with Morgan, the actor, a Roman Catholic, was more than open about his faith, as he claimed that it was the single more important element in his life that has led to restoration.
“My faith has really allowed me to overcome a lot of things — and hard work. You know, nothing comes easy…especially when you‘ve got your back against the wall and you’ve got a lot going against you,” he told Morgan.
“But I wanted to prove to people through my actions — not my words — that I was going to change and that I was going to make a positive impact on the community that I come from,” Wahlberg continued, as he delved into the activities he participates in to help those in need. ”I could not forget about where I came from and find myself in this position without helping and giving back.”
Morgan then asked him about his participation in church. Considering that he’s a busy and successful actor, Wahlberg’s answer was surprising.
“If I don’t go to mass necessarily every day…I definitely go to church every day,” he said. “That’s how I start my day. I like to get in there for about 15 or 20 minutes — say my prayers.”
Clearly curious by this response, Morgan asked, “What does it bring you?”
Wahlberg explained that church provides an opportunity for him to focus his day, while expressing his gratitude. Additionally, it allows him to clear his head so that he can focus upon his actions as well as the elements in his life that he needs to avoid. Prayer, too, is extremely important to the entertainer.
“I pray to be a good servant to God, a father, a husband, a son, a friend, a brother and uncle, a good neighbor, a good leader to those who look up to me and a good follower to those that are serving God and doing the right thing,” he said.

He is successful and now sharing his success to help others. If only Hollywood would follow suit. Thank you Mark. Tebow and Mark may begin to change the entertainment world and I pray they actually achieve that change, maybe in small ways, but a beginning.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 12:30pmHypocrisy much? You people hear something that reinforces your mindset and suddenly some actor is brilliant and the next one that says something you don’t particularly care for is an idiot. If that’s what helps him make it through another day, good for him, if it makes him a better man, I’m all for it, just don‘t act like it’s the only possible course of action.

He was in that History Channel spot with a couple of dozen other hollywood actors promoting Obamas Change…have you forgot…
He is Jew and Catechism is pagan in origin. Jews and Catholics are mostly Libs-Socialist-Marxist and against Protestant Christians.
He was also in the Brat-Pack as I recall
He may feel better but he is hoodwinked and I dont buy any more movies unless its Tom Selleck or the equivalent

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 5:40pmI certainly don‘t support Wahlberg’s socialism. I wasn’t aware of most of what was shared here. Thank you for enlightening me. My “way to go” was for witnessing Jesus and his faith in the public forum.
@NoRoomForSocialismHere. There are a lot of liberals in the Catholic church. You can see that from the demographics of who voted for Obama. I am Catholic and have family and friends who voted for Obama and I still can’t get my mind around it. While the Church supports social justice, it does not support totalitarianism, socialism, abortion, or homosexual marriage. Catholics that vote for that are IN THE WRONG. I and my family are conservative and Catholic, as are most of the Catholics we know.
As for your comment about paganism, that stuff is absolutely false. Statements like that just crap on the martyrs who were butchered for their faith in Jesus and subvert the true history of the Church. All Christianity owes a debt to the Catholic Church who CONVERTED the pagans in Rome and DEFEATED the Muslim invasion of Europe and PRESERVED the Holy Bible. The Church does have a history of bringing people in, pointing our “rays of truth” in all cultures, but ONLY as it relates to the Logos – Jesus Christ, Savior of the World. I encourage you to read up on this:

He fought and uplifted himself out of it and he is a better man for it. And that stupid question by that nobody Piers Morgan, who is famous because he has an accent and libs think that if you have an accent you are much much smarter than an classless American, anyhow (I got lost in my own babble) that smart a** question about “what does it bring you”? wich is pretty much stateing that he doesnt understand faith is beyond ‘ignant’. Wahlburg should have set him up and said “well I imagine its about the same kind of feeling you get when you worship” and watched him just sit there babbling and trying to change the subject. And I see Andertheeen Cooooper has a day time show now? Oooohhh just like that Elen Degenerate who Im certain little Andy is the best of friends with, just a shot in the dark ya know? Posted on January 17, 2012 at 9:30amI like Mark, and I think he is trying hard to be good person.
This past weekend I watched his movie from a few years ago called, “Shooter”…it was a really good movie. However, I noticed something that troubled me despite his ability and movie entertainment value…in one scene he was wearing a Che’ shirt. I couldn’t quite believe what I was looking at and am now curious about his current views towards that very bad person in history. If he has educated himself regarding Che’s history and no longer supports the promotion of a bad person, I’m willing to put it aside…but it is important to me and will jade everything I see regarding Mark and his endeavors if he still supports such a malevolent person in history.
I’m not judging him mind you, I’m not qualified, but I am concerned about the confluence of his possible conflicting perspectives. It’s not what one says that counts, and wisdom is proved by her actions.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:06amI believe it was ‘Memphis’ the FBI agent that was wearing the shirt in the scene with the older gentleman that was the ballistics expert. Perhaps there was another scene in which Mark had one on, but the role of the FBI officer most definitely was wearing one in that scene. Descent movie though.
Report Post »Brad Wesselmann
Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:25amOh yeah, I think you are absolutely correct in who was wearing the shirt and it was NOT Mark…I humbly submit my apology for inadvertently misrepresenting the facts and hope for understanding with my error. I also agree about what is worn on set, but if someone told me to passively wear a shirt that was inconsistent with my beliefs, I would decline.
But AGAIN, Mr. Wahlberg, I humbly submit my apology and to all others I may have mislead with my error.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 12:33pm@Brad Wesselmann I like this movie also. Like you, I noticed the Che shirt the very first time I saw this movie. By the way, it was not Mark Wahlberg’s character that was wearing the shirt it was the rookie FBI character that was helping him prove his innocence. Like @Stoic one stated, they probably have little say in what the “wardrobe/costume” selection is….

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 2:01pmOne of mine and my husband’s favorite movies too, but it wasn’t Mr. Wahlberg wearing the Che shirt, it was a co-star, Michael Pena. My husband first noticed that too and it was disappointing. I’d like to think, just like Santana, they thought it was ‘cool’ to wear it without completely understanding it’s meaning. On that note, it’s easy to judge. Who has lived a perfect life? What’s important is someone trying to better themselves for no other reason than to be a good person and set a good example.

Welcome to the Blaze. I read the wiki article and have a different take on it. He was a villain, yes. Then GOD touched him. Being one myself that has had the blessing of GOD touching me, of being alive today, I have a little compassion for one who has done so as well. There are some very dark places within the human heart that there seems to be no redemption from.
To have a Hollywood actor be this open, is refreshing. If this turns one life around; then it is beautiful.

That being said, I do think Hollywood as a whole, strives to be “edgy” and ahead of the curve. The pendulum has completed its swing far to the left, and is reversing direction. As such, I do think Hollywood will start putting out more faith-oriented productions. Their motive? While history provides a clear indication, I will defer to God’s judgement.
I do, however, think they will continue to push their agenda, as there are far too many left wingers in charge of the Hollywood machine.
