‘I Had to Recycle My Own Urine’: Student Arrested and Forgotten in Cell Goes Days Without Food, Water

University of California San Diego Student Put in Cell After Drug Raid and Left for Five Days Without Basic Necessities

SAN DIEGO (The Blaze/AP) — A San Diego college student who federal drug agents forgot and left in a holding cell for five days without food, water or access to a toilet said Tuesday that he drank his own urine to survive.

Daniel Chong also said that he bit into his glasses to break them and tried to use a shard to scratch “Sorry Mom” into his arm, according to U-T San Diego.

The 24-year-old University of California, San Diego, engineering student was swept up as one of nine suspects in an April 21 drug raid that netted 18,000 ecstasy pills, other drugs and weapons.

Chong said federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents told him he would be let go. One agent even promised to drive him home from the DEA field office in Kearny Mesa, he said.

Instead, he was returned to a holding cell to await release. DEA spokeswoman Amy Roderick said he was accidentally left there:

“Seven suspects were brought to county detention after processing, one was released and the individual in question was accidentally left in one of the cells,” spokeswoman Amy Roderick said.

Federal agents declined to respond to follow-up questions on Monday and no clarification was provided Tuesday.

Their statement did not address how long the detainee was left alone, but San Diego Fire-Rescue said paramedics were summoned to the Viewridge Avenue administrative center at 4:42 p.m. Wednesday to transport a patient who was suspected of ingesting a white powder substance. The DEA said the substance tested positive for methamphetamine.

Chong said he could hear the muffled voices of agents outside his five-by-10-foot windowless cell and the door of the next cell being opened and closed. He kicked and screamed as loud as he could, but apparently his cries for help went unheard.

“I had to recycle my own urine,” he said. “I had to do what I had to do to survive.”

When he was found on April 25, he was taken to a hospital and treated for cramps, dehydration and a perforated lung — the result of ingesting the broken glass.

“When they opened the door, one of them said ‘Here’s the water you’ve been asking for,” Chong said. “But I was pretty out of it at the time.”

The agency hasn‘t commented on Chong’s claim that he was without basic necessities for days. UT-San Diego also reports that Chong admitted to smoking marijuana before the raid but did not know of any other drugs or weapons at the home he was in. Chong has not been charged with any crimes.

Chong’s attorney, Eugene Iredale, said he plans to file a claim against the federal government, and if it is denied he will proceed with filing a federal lawsuit.

Here is Chong’s press conference:

i think you are a traitor
    when you use drugs
you are supporting the very elements in this world
that are using their sale to bring down our freedoms and our country!
the freedoms we have here…like none other in the world!
So they smuggle in drugs and make money off you to futher their onslaught…
to destroy the fabric of our country and then crumble society!
you help them every step of the way!
whats more you care about yourself MORE
than your family, your friends, your country and the freedoms you do have!
Do you think you will enjoy your drugs after you destroyed your country ?
    You will probably be dead!
They will just sell you drugs that wastes your sorry excuse of a life…
you served your purpose…they don’t need you anymore!
you sold your ownself down the river….
you never saw it coming…you never bothered to look!
    Maybe you think i’m wrong
but think where those drugs are grown, smuggled in from
the network of terrorists they support…
I probably cannot get you to see it
but if someone is considering trying drugs or a family member can do an intervention for you
You may have a second chance at life
Plus leave them holding their drug packets with no one to buy them
that would be an awesome day for America and all she represents!

Our military stopped burning the poppy fields in Afghanistan and Pakistan. So what does that say about them and our government in terms of supporting the illegal drug industry. Who funds it and who profits from it is more complex than people think and the Who might surprise many people. The problem is not just an external one and it involves many people who we generally don’t regard as criminals and terrorists. Read the chapter in Freakeconomics regarding why drug salesman still live with their mother. There are much more powerful and influential individuals involved in the sales and distribution of illegal drugs in the US.

Oh really asshat… If I buy a joint from someone that grew it their own basement how the heck am I supporting “terrorists that are trying to kill us.” You are part of the problem. The two main entities that are opposed to legalizing drugs are Law Enforcement personal and drug cartels, since they are the main benefactors of the illegal drug trade. Prohibition dosen’t work, just like alcohol, the prohibition of alcohol gave birth to organized crime and the Kennedy clans criminal organization that now includes the federal government. Legalizing and taxing illicit drugs will cure many, many problems. Then instead of spending trillions of dollars in an unwinable war, we could spend 1/10th of the money on treatment programs. If this were my child the agents that were responsible would be pushing up daisys. Absolutely ridiculous, starving a man to death because we was at a party were some losers were doing drugs. I hope all involved will be fired.

If the drugs were legal, it would not be profitable for terrorists and cartels to manufacture, smuggle, and sell them in the first place. You need history lesson on the prohibition era.

Right, condemn those whose rights are being violated by the very existence of the laws, but not those who put the laws in effect and refuse to change them.

I suppose you believe that all the murder and crime caused by prohibition in the 20′s was the fault of the people consuming alcohol – not the fault of the government that passed the amendment, the groups that lobbied for the amendment, nor the actual criminals who exploited the amendment.

Good for him, I hope he sues the **** out of the government, what they did is not right. Moreover, what people do not seem to understand yet is that everybody who wants to do drugs is already doing them. Making a crime out of drug use is essentially making a crime out of something that isn’t. Alcohol prohibition didn’t work and neither has the current war on drugs. Yet, I think it’s safe to say that alcohol is responsible for much more dammage than other drugs, go figure! I think Abraham Lincoln said it best. “Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.” For all you people who think otherwise, please educate yourself: http://www.learnliberty.org/videos/what-you-should-know-about-drug-prohibition

Our high is our faith, our families, and our zest for life. Get out and experience life, go places, make some excitement. There are so many things we can do to make life fulfilling, going hiking, exploring places, learning something new.

@LCLTCC — Okay, I’ll bite. How about the following three reasons for using cannabis:

      1) Osteoarthritic neuralgia
      2) Cancer (chemotherapy symptoms)
      3) Multiple Sclerosis

For some, cannabis is one of the few “drugs” that can make their lives bearable without the sometimes devastating side effects of other so-called safe prescription drugs. Imagine having every joint hurt all the time, your fingertips feel like they’ve been smashed by a hammer, and someone slapping you continually. That’s neuralgia, and while opiates can control it, aspirin might as well be candy, and the newer painkillers are extraordinarily expensive. Not to mention that if you are using long-term opiate therapy, many doctors treat you like a criminal. Cannabis is far more effective and has fewer side effects than many other substances.

Moralizing is fine, but at least have the decency to recognize that thanks to the paranoia and misinformation from the last forty years, a lot of people suffer needlessly. We can’t even grow industrial hemp in this country thanks to all the paranoia, and so we have to import it. More American jobs lost thanks to ignorance and fear.

      P.S.
The only way I would be for legalizing drugs is if you were to give up your voting rights as soon as you went into to buy some at your local government sanctioned drug dealer. Then you’d have to prove you were clean for at least 5 years before you were allowed to vote again. Give up your right to vote as a stoner and we take away your right to stop screwing up our country. Everybody in Afghnistan wants to smoke/chew/inhale opium all of their lives, and we can all see how far they’ve come, huh?
I was in college in the sixties and I’ve never tried any drug at all. Not because I was a snob or considered myself better than anyone. I didn’t try drugs because I watched the two out of three around me slowly melt their brains everyday. Some thought they could fly, Some OD’d, and others went on to become college professors, entertainers and activists. They were never reliable, honest or dependable after getting hooked. They also lost their ability to smile, joke, have a discussion or be the fun loving people that went off to college.
Those that were in our debate club could no longer debate. They withdrew from their friends and families and joined ‘cults’ of drug dependent, hopeless individuals who dreamed of a peaceful utopia all over the world…which everyone with common sense realized then and still knows that ‘world peace’ is impossible.
People like George Soros believe that maybe they, as god, should just get rid of most of the world population and start over with only those who agree with him. Can you imagine the boredom?
Regardless, I‘m not in favor of ’legalizing’ any drugs. After learning about the cultures around the world, it is obvious that if a ‘ruler’ can get their minions hooked on drugs, they’ll be his slaves forever.

I think a lot of the laws governing prisons are stupid, who cares if prisoners are allowed to be cold, but leaving someone without water for five days is tantamount to attempted murder and should be treated as such. This is what happens when a liberal state tries to be all things to everyone, God even, and ends up unable to adequately provide even the basic services it is chartered to do. God save us from liberals, who think they can do everything better than anyone else. Their actual job performance is often far below adequate.

Let’s see, admitted to smoking pot, and was told he was going to be released and then let sit in a room for 5 days. That’s a bit excessive, dontcha think? I thought America was against torture? Oh, I get it, we can torture these poor college students who do pot, but murderers, terrorists and child molestors get their rights. Yea, you make a lot of sense. Now, if it’s a violent crime, I’ll all for taking away the exercise room with the weights, allowing them to earn a degree in law while incarcerated, and even given only bread and water for food, but NOTHING for 5 days? If this had been Bin Ladin everyone would be totally bent out of shape.

TO LORIANN12, murderers, terrorists and child molestors get their rights. You have got to be kidding do you think I give a crap about their rights, if proven that they are murderers, terroist or child molesters they get a final meal after their conviction and die at midnight the same day, there would be no waiting for 20 years of appeals wasting tax payers money. The pot smoker got off lucky ask him if he will take that chance again.

No we should not. In fact, the eight amendment prohibits the government from doing anything like this.

The constitution must be followed even when we hate what the person is doing. We can’t use it only for the ones we think deserve the freedoms it protects..

Hmm, do I believe the college student who was tweaked out of his mind on meth, and ingested broken glass for attention? Something tells me he’s overstating his agony to make a political statement and increase his cash settlement.

He smoked Pot not meth. Pot doesn’t drive people to eat glass and drink urine. Five days in a windowless cell with no food or water might drive one crazy enought to eat glass and drink urine.

MINORITEAPARTIER — that is how it has been for a long time. Our freedoms and fortune have been sacrificed to fight the war on drugs.

      And we are losing.
