Editor’s note: this is the second in a series of first-hand reports from Glenn Beck photographer Mark Mabry, who is on the ground in the Midwest and South surveying the damage from last week’s storms. Yesterday, he shared stunning photos from Henryville, IN. Today, he tells the gripping story of his encounter with an emotional storm victim named Andy in Crittenden, KY. Stay tuned to The Blaze and GBTV for continued coverage.
I met Andy B. just after he yelled at me to “get the hell” off of his neighbor’s yard. How was I to know that was someone’s yard? How was I to know? There was no house there, not even a foundation.
A little embarrassed I walked over to the roofless house where a man, about 30, stood inside with his back to me. There was no front or back wall on his house, just some sides. A pile of rubble was the only thing that disrupted my view. A Nissan bumper was in the doorway. His couch was standing on it’s head near the kitchen.
I approached.
“Excuse me. Man, I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to offend anyone.”
He turned around. Andy had a black eye and a few scratches on his face.
“I’m sick of sight seers. Just get out of here man.”
“Dude, I’m really sorry. Are you OK?”
Looking around, “What the hell do you think?”
“This your place?”
He shook his head yes.
“Man, this sucks. I can’t even imagine what your going through.”
“I’m a single dad and now I have to deal with this sh-t”
It was Monday morning. The press was gone. There were a few tractors cleaning things up and a sweet lady in a van drove by and offered coffee or a sandwich.
“Man, I’m sorry. I’m just pissed at everything. Take your pictures, I know you have a job to do,” he softened up a little.
“Forget my job. How many kids do you have?” I put my camera down.
“I have a son. He’s five.”
“He okay?”
“Yeah. I got him to the basement just in time.”
I looked. The basement was nothing more than a crawl space below the house.
“I laid on top of him. I thought I was going to die. I just didn’t want him to get hurt. He was saying, ‘daddy, you’re squishing me.’ I just dropped him off at daycare today.”
“When we crawled out of the basement, I saw that,” he motioned to a neighbor’s foundation, where only a makeshift flagpole now stood, “and wondered if I was going to two or four funerals this week.”
“What do you do?”
“I’m a union electrician.”
“Where’s your kid’s mom?”
“She split when he was a baby. Just after I bought this house.”
“Man, I can’t even imagine what you’re going through.”
“It sucks, man. People keep driving by and staring at me and my house. Yesterday I threw a two-by-four at some people. I’ve been yelling at people all day. Look, if you show up in a Carhartts with a chainsaw, come on in. But if you just want to stare at me, get the hell out of here.”
At this point, I felt really small. Then he said, “You’re barn door is open.” He laughed. I made the appropriate adjustment to my zipper.
“He’s been staying at my parents. Last night they had to explain to him why he saw a grown man cry…”
“Andy, someday they’ll explain to him that his daddy was ready to die to save him.”
With this, we embraced. Andy sniffed a few times and walked back into his house. It was his stuff. He was starting over.
I picked up the camera and walked away. Sorry folks, no pictures of Andy.

Posted on March 6, 2012 at 10:58amWe are here in Indiana. It has been news for a few days. But the media goes away and the clean up goes on for weeks, even months. Where will the help be then? People like to volunteer when it is news, not when it is work.
Salvation Army is raising money, that will help. Most of the volunteers came from Kentucky as it is closer to the site.
One of my coworkers had to go through there yesterday on government business. As a young man it was the worst that he had ever seen. But this is one of the worst storms in Indiana since the Palm Sunday tornadoes in 1965 that wiped out two towns.
And just remember that southern Illinois is bad as are places in KY and TN.

If any of you want to help, not just here but with all of the storms, go to the national web sites of Red Cross and Salvation Army. Just make your donation available to go where it is needed, do not direct it. Folks it is going to take millions of dollars to help those with the damage.

Posted on March 6, 2012 at 11:52amI too went through Irene in Washington NC. It seems from our city east, got hammered pretty bad. We lost so many houses…..we still have blue tarps on roofs and what is left of houses with tarps, its not over yet. We did help our neighbors and we did protect them too. I sported an AR 15 around that kept people from getting out of their cars. Some did show up to help, however, most of us went to help others who had more problems. East of us was wrecked worse than our little town……

We can not forget the needs do continue and those that can help should. “Labor of Love Joplin” April 9-13, 2012 will be incredible. We are a group of people that met in Israel for 8/24. Posted on March 6, 2012 at 2:47pmThis is looking to be a very bad year. Lots of tornadoes, maybe a bad hurricane season as well. It may well demand that we donate over a billion dollars to help others. On top of that it is a political year which will also demand us to give. Many of you need to decide now to give far beyond what you would normally. Give even though it cuts into your budget.
And it would not hurt for conservative politicians to ask for folks to give to the Red Cross and Salvation Army. Maybe even set up donation sites on their websites.

I hope your son is doing well, all good Americans are so very proud of him! May God keep him close and safe. Let’s get him home, we may need him here, soon!.
I took a break from the Blaze for a while, it got taken over by Ron Paul supporters. I can see that many of the original long time posters have left as well. Glenn has alienated quite a few people of late and I fear my days here at the Blaze may be numbered, lol. I went to Huffpo and spent a month posting as a dumb liberal over there, playing mind games and ******* them off, it was so much fun, until I got “banned from posting”.
All is well with my family, thanks for asking… we are ready for whatever may come, I fear we may be in for a long hard summer, at least… Let the games begin, battle lines have been drawn. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
Take care Chazman,

I’m originally from Indiana and can remember the Palm Sunday tornadoes. Hoosiers will survive and thrive after the mourning and the healing and the rebuilding. Indiana (Kentucky, Alabama, Illinois) folk is what this country is made of — not politicians and definitely not liberal whiners. God Bless the weary Hoosiers, I‘d be there to help if I could but I am one of the working tax payers so I’m sending what money I can via Red Cross.

Older people on this site remember the daughter of Jackie Kennedy’s husband, Onnasiss, that inherited her dad’s millions but was very unhappy in her love life and her life in general and if I remember right, she was found dead in a swimming-pool (no foul-play) at the age of under 40 yrs.

We watched the weather and made sure it wasn’t going to hit us. Never thought it would do so much damage in a valley by the river.
It broke the high tension lines going over the river from the power plant in Moscow. All river traffic had to be stopped, too.
The worst we got, in Ripley, were some chimneys and roofs getting damaged.

that is an absolutely idiotic statement. Look at John Huntsman…billionaire many times over…giving it all away…
Look at Andrew Carnegie….Getty…Rockefeller…where they rich Hell Yeah! did a lot of it come from being in the right place at the right time… You Betcha! But 100 years later we still know their names NOT for what they did to make their money but what they did WITH their money… you don’t have to like their politics or even what you THINK they did in their life (remember who rights the History of these guys.. the Liberal Progressive Leftist who hate capitalism and see these men as EVIL).
I think Gates does plenty that is mess up…but the William F and Belinda Gates Foundation will have an endowment of nearly 50 billion when he dies. They grant money (not loan – not if you take it we own you – do what we say with it) to schools and cities in the US and all over the world to improve education and technology infrastructure and access to INFORMATION which leads to Freedom!! I don’t care if he is a liberal Democrat, an atheist, or a “mean guy that says things you don’t like”… I judge a man by what he DOES and says….and the Gates Foundation does MUCH good and will for decades to come if this country survives.
Rich does not equal Evil… Filthy rich does not equal Evil… Evil equals Evil.. Money is NOT Evil it only amplifies your character…apparently you have NONE!!

When the tornadoes destroyed Tuscaloosa last year me and my daughter loaded up my Ford Sport Track with donations and made the trip south from Illinois to donate our time and effort to the people of Alabama. As we struggled to save our pets and our possessions people just gathered on the road at the edge of the water and stared. One jerk went back and forth in his canoe, each time taking a new “tourist” to see the devastation of our homes (there were just about 5 or 6 homes flooded). Finally, my brother went to the stoop with a shotgun and told the guy if he paddled his boat through our yard one more time he would shoot it out from under him. They canoe guy didn’t come back.

They seem to be the church closest to Crittenden. Maybe they can help you get in touch with Andy if he registered with them. Of the local sheriff will know shelter points, etc. Keep praying!

Posted on March 6, 2012 at 10:32amWe felt the same way when Irene ravished our neighborhood. My neighbor‘s house was 20 feet off of it’s foundation and most of the first floor was gone. We had people stopping to take picture’s of his house, and our destroyed land. I wanted to shot them. Even strapped on my 45 and walked up the driveway every time someone stopped. One out of twenty were there to see if they could help.
If it wasn‘t for great organizations like Samaritan’s Purse getting on site before any ‘government’ it would have been even more hell on earth.
Thank you Mark for talking to the man, and not just taking pictures.
