‘I Heard a…Moan’: Woman Dies as Demolition Crew Knocks Down Atlanta Home

ATLANTA — A woman was killed Saturday afternoon in southeast Atlanta as a demolition team tore down a house.

Witnesses said the woman was inside the home when the building began crumbling around her.

Residents in the area told Channel 2’s Tony Thomas the demolition crew began working from the back toward the front.

Neighbors said they had wanted the house torn down for years. Then they said they heard the cry for help.

Through the afternoon, Atlanta firefighters combed through the debris, making sure there is no one else trapped underneath the rubble. They would find no one else.

Neighbors told Thomas about an hour into the demolition workers heard a cry.

Robert Elliott was the first to arrive at the demolished house. “Me and some other people cleared right here,” Elliot said. “I was watching the backhoe turn and as he turned I heard a woman moan.”

    The women was found in the attic of the home. The home was checked prior to the demolishing. They are not sure if she was dead prior to the demo work according to the local Atlanta paper.

      @smak – the article says someone *heard a moan*… I have to ask – How? Over the noise of the equipment did anyone *hear* it? Demo guys – as a rule – do a walk through. The county people inspect beforehand to make sure the gas, power, ect are shut down – so the demo crew doesn’t get accidentally blown up – or electrocuted.

      It’s a very sad story – both that she was there in the first place – but that she’s now deceased. That said, I have some doubts about the *moan* part of this story. May she rest in peace.

    I love how everyone is making the assumption they didn’t check the house out before demolishing the building. It is possible it was checked out the day before for clearance. It is also possible they did check it out prior to commencing on the same day (but that she was well hidden). You people are getting more and more conspiratorial as each day passes…

    Or they Knocked down the Wrong House, Which happens more than people want to admit, Esp in states where there is no Court Oversight on Foreclosures and Condemnation, and the Local Governments and Banks can do anything they want over “Private” Property with little or no oversight.

    i can not believe some of the post here, this is not about politics, this sad a human lost her life, weather she was homeless or not makes no difference, someone should have checked, i am sadden for her and her family, i am also disappointed in some, who post some of the most insensitive comments, is there no sympathy any more, yes we all have an opinion, but when something like this happens it is some times best to be left to ourselves, i pray that she did not suffer,and that her family well have peace

    I had the same thought. She probably heard the men in the house and hid because she was scared. She probably heard the heavy machinery and got even more frightened.

    Some of you imply that the workers didn’t follow proper procedures. That wasn’t reported in the story. I bet they are not feeling really good right now, either.

    My questions would be… did the workers do a visual walk through of the house and did that include announcing in a loud voice what was about to happen? What are the proper procedures? Would the woman have responded anyway? If she was scared, like I am supposing, she may have thought it was a trick to get her to come out. I can imagine a person in her situation being paranoid considering the violent people in this world. Was the house posted with a demolition notice… and did the woman know how to read? Without more information, it is impossible to assign blame. If I had to guess… it looks like a tragic accident that is nobody’s fault.

We have turn this scapegoat phrase’s meaning into that of just deflecting blame. If we assign this to something that is not Bush’s fault it then eventually blaming Bush for something will have no validity.       Yes, I was being sarcastic… I do not know who was at fault, but I suspect that if the house was condemed, it should have been properly marked as such. Having said that, the woman should have known better than to be in there. Unless someone kidknapped her and tied her up inside, then I am pobably gonna go with it is her fault… I could be wrong.

      Really? The house has been abandoned for 2 years and they tear it down and someone is inside. Ya think it was a nice lady that worked her butt off at Wal-Mart working 40 a week or perhaps another nice lady that busted her ass to raise two kids waitressing at a local diner. Don’t be naive and make this out to be some sad story of a struggling mother. The house was abandoned! For 2 years!

      I now live back in my hometown in South Louisiana (just moved back from Atlanta) and have an exact house like the one torn down, up the road from me. It’s “inhabited” about 12 times a day but it needs to be demolished. Hopefully when it happens, someone “like the lady” is inside and the gene pool stops right then and we move one step closer to getting our country back.

Not all homeless people use drugs and if they do why do you immediately assume they are a whore? Just because she is female. And regardless, she was still a human, how would like to die that way.       it is SOP to clear the building. lets not be too harsh on the workers here. something smells fish. the building was caondemned for quite a while. there were signs up,.it was run down.. the nieghbors wanted it out for years. and they used bulldozers/backhoes to take out the structures supports.those machines are’nt quite. i can’t here a thing when operatimg something like that except for the dozer.

      an acorn/seiu squatter or a person strung out avoiding detection? given the state of things… just saying.

      2- Did they search the entire house before working ?
      3- The mystery woman , how she got in ? didn’t she hear the heavy equipment ?

      I always thought that someone would have enough sense to check even a vacant house for people or aniamils BEFORE commencing any kind of demolitions. Obviously I was majorly wrong.       If the bldg was really decrepit, the workers may have been loathe to go inside for fear of falling thru. I’ve been in my great-grandparents farm house that had been abandoned when they passed away. It had been empty for some time, and there were parts that had already fallen thru. So Mom was very careful where she led us thru her memories as a little girl. I was in my mid-teens at the time, so it was an adventure, but I know Mom was on pins and needles the whole time. We were not allowed to ascend the stairs for fear of falling thru a floor.

      How about a little personal responsibility!!!!! A condemned house, so anyone there is trespassing. Have you ever tried not to hear or FEEL a tracked piece of equipment, move into position. Think about it….. An excavator that size, shakes the ground as it moves. You can feel it for a couple of blocks. Put this on the person responsible. The one breaking the law! Don’t break the law and no one gets hurt. Wow: How simple!!!! There once was common sense in the world.

      What’s the difference between a union threatening to strike if their demands are not met and the Republicans threatening to strike if their budgetary demands are not met?

      The last time the government shut down was when Clinton was pres and he had a Republican controlled congress who went on strike over Clinton’s failure to bend to their budget demands. You know, Clinton, the guy who left a budget surplus when he handed over to Bush.

      Now this is the first budget for Obama with a Republican congress and their first move is to threaten a shut down.

      The republiclowns are just like the unions they hate so much. Total hypocrites.

      The man said they “Checked” the building. They don’t know when she came in. I think it is sad and horrible that the woman was killed. She must have wondered in the back drunk after they checked, surely if she had not been passed out she would have heard the equipment. I agree with Patriot308 some responsibility has to be put on the woman also.I don’t know that she was drunk just supposition.But as far as common sense I would have wondered about all the equipment in front of it and surely they had a sign. would think……
