Here is the original video:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Longtime news analyst Juan Williams, who has written extensively on race and civil rights, has been fired by National Public Radio after comments he made about Muslims on the Fox News Channel.
NPR issued a statement late Wednesday saying his contract as a senior news analyst was being terminated after Williams’ comments Monday on “The O’Reilly Factor.”
Host Bill O‘Reilly brought on guests to discuss his appearance last week on ABC’s “The View” during which Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg walked off the set in protest of O‘Reilly’s views on Muslims.
“Where am I going wrong here, Juan?” O’Reilly asked.
Williams, 56, responded that too much political correctness can get in the way of reality.
“I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the Civil Rights movement in this country,” Williams said. “But when I get on a plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”
A phone message left for Williams at his home in Washington seeking comment was not immediately returned Thursday morning.
Before he was fired, Williams’ comments drew a response from Islamic civil rights groups.
In a statement Wednesday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said such commentary from a journalist about other racial, ethnic or religious minority groups would not be tolerated.
“NPR should address the fact that one of its news analysts seems to believe that all airline passengers who are perceived to be Muslim can legitimately be viewed as security threats,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said.
Later Wednesday, NPR issued a statement saying Williams’ remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”
“Juan has been a valuable contributor to NPR and public radio for many years and we did not make this decision lightly or without regret,” NPR spokeswoman Dana Davis Rehm said in an e-mailed statement.
Williams was previously a longtime reporter, columnist and editorial writer at The Washington Post. He has written extensively on the Civil Rights movement, including a book on the African American religious experience and a biography on Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
Conservative bloggers defended Williams on Thursday, blasting NPR’s decision.
“All Juan Williams did is say both exactly how he feels and how many, many other Americans feel on this subject,“ wrote Erick Erickson on his ”Red State” blog. “The man’s body of work makes clear he is no bigot. But we sure can’t offend Muslims can we?”

While I don’t agree with Juan most of the time his right to his opinion should be protected. NPR should be defunded. It is a government run propoganda machine, Unlike fox that is run with advertising money from the free market. Fox is what it is because the public is screaming at the top of it’s lungs for freedom.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 12:36pmI have almost nothing in common with Juan Williams political veiw and have often times fast forwarded through his commentaries when he is on O‘Reilly’s show. But the one thing O’Reilly wants, is people that speak openly and honestly about their veiws and inturpetations of the facts. Juan expressed what most people, who are honest with themselves, most likely think. With what has happened in this country, and what we continue to see and hear, why wouldn’t we be cautious when we travel. NPR is touted as a bastion of openess and enlightenment. How dare they fire him!! NPR has definately brought into the light of day, exactly where they stand on open discussion and honestly. They will not be seeing anymore of my membership dollars.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 12:32pmI like Juan Williams, even though I do not agree with a lot of the things he believes, being a conservative. I watched the origional incident when it happened on Monday night and quite frankly didn’t give it another thought, I think probably a vast number of Americans feel the same way. However, if someone had said when I see an African American with his pants sagging down and loud rap music playing, identifying himself as that way first instead of an American, I am afraid…….I think Juan Williams would have reacted quite strongly. Having said that, I don’t believe he deserved to be fired for saying something that a lot of people in this country feel. What happened to freedom of speech and expression, or does that only apply if you are being politically correct? NPR was wrong, he deserved better, and I predict he will go on to bigger and better things, hopefully at FOX news as he makes me think and challenges some of my long held beliefs on a number of issues. God Bless you Juan!

If Juan said something while on your broadcast system, you might reprimand him, but he was on Fox, where he is a token liberal voice and they give lip service to being fair and balanced. Your talking the talk of tolerance has been exceeded by your walking the walk of vindictive retaliation. As usual, NPR fails to use logic and resorts to their typical liberal tactic of “kill the messenger” rather than addressing the validity of the message. Shame on you…any taxpayer dollars going to your organization are a total betrayal of the supposedly “nonpartisan” original intent. Your reaction typifies why there can be no rational dialog on any subject not agreeing with your party line.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 3:13pmPerhaps Juan will now have a more conservative view of things considering how PC liberal BS has just cost him his job.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 3:33pmIf he said that Christians were a bunch of racists bigots that hated Obama because he was black and that he was worried that Christians would have militias threatening to kill the President, he would have been protected by NPR as excecising his right to free speech.
I guess some minorities are more equal than others.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 3:35pmAnother thing, isn’t NPR publicly funded? Doesn‘t that mean that the government is deciding whose speech is free and whose speech isn’t?

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 4:53pmBefore 9/11, I do not think most Americans thought twice about getting on a plane with anyone dressed in “Muslim garb”. Things changed in America on 9/11. America did nothing to provoke the Muslim “extremists”. The battle between Christians and Muslims has existed for centuries. And as much as many “Americans” would like not to believe, the world (especially the Muslim world) views the US as a Christian nation (because we are!). It is only human nature for anyone to have the same fears as Juan Williams.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 6:34pmI really believe were are living in unprecedented times when a guy like Juan gets the boot for not being politically correct? Soft tyranny today for sure, what happens when a kid at school says that teacher makes him feel scared or gives em the creeps and the teacher happens to be muslim or other. Weren’t we all taught that we need to be authentic about how we FEEL inside about various issues. I guess some feelings real or not cannot be expressed in this country any longer. I mean I really Love Tacos and many other Mexican foods, but what if someone said, I hate Burritos, would that then be construed as the person is racist against latinos? I would not have handled this guy as well as MK did. I would have had a Col. Jessup moment after the third time he asked her if she felt as Juan did or these other millions of Americans who agreed with Juan. “Your damn Right I Do!!” Now I have a nation to defend so I’m going back to my base, I mean my blogging.
