‘I Was Never Offered a Nickel’: Former Bachmann Iowa Chair Speaks Out on Joining Paul Camp

I Was Never Offered a Nickel: Former Bachmann Iowa Chair Speaks Out on Joining Paul Camp

Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson denied Thursday that he was offered money to join Texas Rep. Ron Paul's presidential campaign after serving as Michele Bachmann's Iowa chairman.AP

Former Michele Bachmann Iowa chairman Kent Sorenson said the Ron Paul campaign didn’t offer him any money to join up with them, despite the Minnesota congresswoman’s claims that Sorenson was paid to jump ship.

Sorenson, an Iowa state senator, announced Wednesday he would be supporting the Texas congressman just hours after appearing with Bachmann at a campaign stop. In a statement, Bachmann said Sorenson made the switch after “he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign” and said he personally told her, “everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn’t I.”

Sorenson hit back at Bachmann Thursday, telling Fox News’ Megyn Kelly in a somewhat contentious interview that the Paul campaign never offered him any money.

“Boy you know how to cause a controversy, don’t you sir?” Kelly said.

“That was not my intention but I believe you have to do what’s right,” he replied.

When Kelly said Sorenson has been accused of disloyalty, he charged back, “I think you have your facts a little wrong there.”

As Sorenson detailed how the people running Paul’s campaign had come to his aid in 2008, Kelly cut in: “I don‘t want to get too deep in the weeds here on Iowa politics because frankly our viewers don’t really care that much about your re-election battle, with all due respect.”

“With all due respect you asked me a question and I’m going to answer that question,” Sorenson said. “We‘re at a time when we’re seeing a frugal socialist like Mitt Romney and a conservative like Ron Paul in the top tier of this race, and I believe that I had to make a tough choice. It was painful for me to make and I believe I made the right choice.”

Sorenson said he had been speaking with the Bachmann camp in February before Paul got into the race, and before he joined up with her he called Paul to see if he would be making a bid. He said when two weeks went by and he didn’t get an answer from Paul, he joined up with Bachmann.

When Kelly asked whether Sorenson thinks Bachmann is making up the claim that he was paid to jump ship, Sorenson said yes.

“Unfortunately I believe she is. That conversation did not happen,” he said. “I was never offered a nickel from the Ron Paul campaign.”

But Bachmann doubled down on those accusations hours later during a phone interview on Fox News’ “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” recounting the phone conversation she said she had with Sorenson.

“He said he was sorry for putting us in this situation, that he had been offered money – a lot of money – by the Ron Paul campaign, he said he was tempted because he said, ‘Everyone else has pulled out in Iowa, why wouldn’t I?’ But he said, ‘I’m not going to do it; it would be the wrong thing.’”

The next day, Bachmann said, he joined her for the campaign event in Indianola, Iowa and insisted he was still on board. Hours later, he appeared at a Paul rally and announced he was endorsing him.

The Paul campaign has denied offering Sorenson any money for his endorsement.

She does that because its the MSMs intention to strangle any non GOP elite candidate with their own words. Something it took Palin a while to finally get control of. Even Gingrich get his caught in the door every so often. But they seem to be leaving Mitt pretty much alone. I wonder why? (sarc)

We all know the MSM is holding back on one candidate so they can ‘lead’ the sheeple toward one candidate that they can attack on the other side (after nomination).

It’s all theater. And it has all been gamed out. Right to the end. This “IS” going to be THE nastiest election cycle in American history. Mark my words.

It has been confirmed, that Sorenson was lying. Several people have come forward now, including his former campaign manager, to state that he told them, he was offered a large sum of money to go over to the Paul camp. Bachmann is telling the truth and she can be trusted. Sorenson is a traitor and has no integrity. The Blaze needs to set this story straight. Bachmann will make a great President and she is a true conservative.

A lot are starting to realize how dishonest Bachmann really is. She over reacts and says the first thing that comes to her head and calls it “facts”.

Time and time again Bachmann has been shown on the opposite side of the truth. Bachmann can NOT be trusted.

Besides, she wants to send our tax dollars to Muslim nations who hate Israel. Bachmann also wants to arm and defend Muslim tyrants who hate Israel. Bachmann cannot be trusted.

“While I personally disagree with Kent’s decision, and plan to stay with Michele Bachmann because I truly believe in her, I cannot, in good conscious watch a good man like Kent Sorenson be attacked as a ‘sell-out’ … That is simply not the case, and it was not the basis of his decision.”

Ron Paul helped get Bachmann elected, just like his team helped get Sorenson elected. They are for Constitutionalists! Bachmann disappointed Dr. Paul when she voted for the antiPatriot act and a few things—but they were supposedly FRIENDS before the election. Surely can’t tell it NOW from the way Bachmann acts.

I doubt anyone will know for sure about the money. Bachmann has a history of stretching the truth, with a lot of personal attacks on the other candidates. She is basically out of staff and money. She needs to drop out after Iowa and endorse a counservative. However, I think Romney has promised her something, which resulted in vicious attacks on some of the other candidates. She obviously was carrying the water for Romney.

      Common Sense

Good point. I forgot to mention that her law credentials that she so commonly brags about are dubious at best. But that kind of goes in the category of lying as well. Although even if, for argument, she really had tried hundreds of IRS cases as she claims (when it’s really more like 2 or 3), she was a lawyer who defended the IRS from the people. That’s kind of the same, in my view, as the defense attourney who bases her career on freeing known pedophiles.

I donated money to Bachmann ONCE. I was invited to one of her “live town hall meetings” over the phone. It was right after the last debate, when Bachmann failed a Iran fact check in FOUR major newspapers.

Yet, that night, she said, “Did you see what I did to Ron Paul in the debates? That‘s what I’m going to do to him in this election.”

I was floored. She was wrong in the debate. Instead, she made it look as if she was RIGHT and used that ploy on people to knock Ron Paul.

I have no respect for Bachmann. Zero.

The problem is that the Republican and Democratic Parties have moved so far out of mainstream America they don’t know what it looks like anymore. They are trying to get everyone to think like their party instead of the party representing how the people think. Ron Paul is the only candidate that is real and has integrity.
If Ron Paul wins in the caucus and is not nominated, the Republican Party is worthless and will fade away. Ron Paul will get votes for president even if other Republicans want to deny it and fight it. Ron Paul deniers will be the ones who hand the election to Obama again.

This guy is nothing more than an a man without honor, a man who was in Paul’s money bomb pocket since the beginning… a Judas Iscariot. Paul has a place in his heart for this type of man based on his known views on Israel and Jews. If you call yourself a Christian, you can‘t be in line with Ron Paul’s views based on his hatred for the consercrated place where it all began.

“Before we get started, let’s all say happy birthday to Elvis Presley today!” Bachmann said.

It looks like some Michelle Bachmann fan boys have their undies in a wad over this one. Bachmann is notorious for going through staff like toilet paper. Look at it from the staff’s perspective: if you had to look into those crazed Bachmann eyes everyday, you would want to stay either.

It turns out that Bachmann’s campaign advisor (Wes can’t remember the last name) was just fired earlier in the evening for sticking up for Sorenson. He says that Michelle’s story about being payed never happened. Who are we to believe? I certainly don’t believe a woman who has single-handedly caused the staff at PolitiFact to have to work overtime this holiday season.

It’s also worth pointing out that Sorenson attended political rallies of all the Republicans that stopped in his district if ask. He had attended 3 Paul events prior to making the move to the Paul camp. He did attend a Bachmann rally in his district earlier in the day that he made the move. The media played this up without giving the whole story.

Megyn Kelly was an embarrassment in this interview. They are always hostile to good news for Paul. They love their big government neo-cons. They pretend that they are for free markets and the Constitution, but they are selling corporatism and endless war. It’s a propaganda network for the statists in the Republican party.

How many of you neo-cons (fake conservatives) are ready to jump on the Santorum or Romney bandwagon? They are Obama’s second term.

Conservative radio host Steve Deace, who is neutral in the race but who has described Michele Bachmann as the most consistent conservative in her record, expressed surprise at her last few weeks — noting that she’d accused Bob Vander Plaats of trying to get her to drop out (which he denied), accused Sorenson of being bought off (which he denied), a super PAC that had backed her switched to Mitt Romney, and she asserted that no pastors have asked her to get out of the race (though a prominent one said he did).

“She’s accused three people of lying, all of whom say what she says is not true…When she won the Ames Straw Poll, she had just spent the summer [hitting] House Speaker John Boehner for cutting deals with Obama on the debt ceiling,” said Deace, adding that instead of focusing on the payroll tax cut fight that the House GOP lost, Bachmann chose to talk about “all these sideshows, which make great copy for blogs, but which don’t impact any voters. They don’t create new jobs.”

Thursday brought another headscratcher: Bachmann insisted she feels, based on atmospherics around her bus tour, that “hundreds of thousands” of people are moving from Ron Paul to her, adding, “That’s what we’re seeing on the ground.”

Only 120,000 people voted in the most recent 2008 caucuses.
