If Frederick Got Two Beatings Per Day...: Parents Outraged Over Slavery Questions in 3rd Grade Math Homework

Parents in Georgia are outraged after their third grade children were assigned math homework containing references to slaves picking cotton and getting beaten, Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported.

Christopher Braxton told the station he couldn’t believe the word problems in his 8-year-old son’s math homework Wednesday from Beaver Ridge Elementary School in Norcross.

One question asked, “Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?” Another said, “If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?” A third question dealt with how many pounds of cotton Frederick had picked.

“It kind of blew me away,” Braxton said. “Do you see what I see? Do you really see what I see? He’s not answering this question.”

“Something like shouldn’t be imbedded into a kid of the third, fourth, fifth, any grade,” parent Terrance Barnett told WSB. “I’m having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts.”

School district spokeswoman Sloan Roach told the station teachers were trying to do a cross-curricular activity, combining math problems with social studies lessons. While the district encourages such pairings, the problem with the math homework was that it gave no historical context to its questions.

“We understand that there are concerns about these questions and we agree that these questions were not appropriate,” Roach said. Still, she said she didn’t think the teachers were being purposely insensitive.

“This is simply a case of creating a bad question,” she told local Fox affiliate WAGA-TV.

The parents were told the school had collected the assignments and shredded them so that they wouldn’t resurface.

Roach said there is a process to review questions before they are given to students, but didn’t happen in this case. She said the administration will work with teachers about developing better questions that are “meaningful and appropriate.”

    Who is behind this and why. The subject of slavery is brought up to keep racism alive and well in this country.
    The white guilt over slavery is diminishing and the true racists in this country, Al, Jesse, Quanel X, and the Democrats can’t have that.

      It didn’t take us long to get our kids out of a school when we realized who they were spending their time with. If the teachers are so idiotic that parents have to look over every math problem their children are doing in school– time to find another way, parents. You’d be surprised and delighted at the possibilities… best thing we ever did.

      This is the new wave in education. It’s called cross curricular education, which is a euphemism for indoctrination into socialism. Progressives have been at this for a while. The gold standard is the International Baccalaureate program out of Geneva, Switzerland.
      Progressives found out in the 1960′s, Howard Zinn, that schools could be used for more than education.

      This is just another way of keeping tension up in the country, you can bet that teacher’s unions had something to do with it as well. a lot of the teachers in the south are black.

      This article never mentioned whether the teacher who developed this homework assigned were led by a white or black teacher. The person on the interview was white, but that does not mean that all the teacherts involved were white. Most white people have tried very hard to move beyond this racism crap, and in my opinion it is the blacks that want it to live on forever. It has been 250 years and no one in this day and age were slaves and some of their ancestors were not slaves. If one of my ancestors were burned at the stake for being a witch, does that make me a witch? Sharpton, Jackson, Waters, ACLU and others, do something constructive instead of stirring the pot.

      Slaves were the tractors of the day, and cost the equivalent of million dollar combines and the like today. I know plenty of people with million dollar pieces of equipment, and they sure don’t abuse it. If it breaks they fix it first, before their cars or their kids. They keep them in barns that cost 10x as much as the homes they live in. The whole ******** that slaves were routinely beaten is just another liberal lie.

      For any of you who think homeschooling is not for you, let me suggest you take a quick look at Laurel Springs School. It is an online private school – kind of like Phoenix University for kids. It is SO awesome. The curriculum is fabulous, they have real teachers available to the kids in case they have a question, they have extracurricular activities like yearbook, debate, mentoring, chess, etc. – and their graduates go on to top universities. We have been LSS parents for two years now and really appreciate that they provide the curriculum, grading, transcript keeping, etc., but the kids can do the work from home under our watchful eye. Check them out – I don’t work for them or anything so I have no ulterior motive here. But I can tell you as a parent, I am thrilled with what they offer.

      Questions posed like this don’t depict slavery as bad, so they aren’t keeping racism alive, they are making slavery acceptable to children. The questions make the children think that slaves are needed to pick oranges, need to be beaten, etc. This is the goal of Progressive-ism and the Democrat party, The Democrat party is the party of slave owners, and they morphed into the Progressive party…….. Learn History. Only Democrats lynched blacks, Only Democrats owned slaves. Freed slaves were Republicans.

      People just infer that the questions concern black slaves, it is quite possible the slaves mentioned are white. There were white slaves in the US as well, although it’s not talked about or taught in school.       I met a fellow this year, a black man and we engaged in conversation on a variety of subjects! It wasn’t long before we got into ancestry, and he PROUDLY told me he was the grandson of a slave, and damn proud of it, as was his grandfather (proud of being a slave, that is–that doesn‘t mean ’happy’ with it, but proud of it) who went on to fight in the Civil War (for the wrong side, but then that’s what was available to him at the time), and became a citizen, a civil servant (public service) and the largest hog farmer in the region! THESE ARE THE REAL PEOPLE OUT THERE! Those that foment hatred via ‘math’ exercises such as above are just hate-mongers!

      Good God, this is absuridity. slavery is a concept that happened 200 years ago in a modified concept of todays image, indebutentured servitude is a much more accurate description of the period 1700 to 1850 which is nothing foreign to the European system.
      Guilt is not an emotion which I feel, especially for the Caribean, African immigrants since 1900. If they don’t like what they forced theit way into,

If Andy, who works at the local store, earns $100 a week and the Federal Tax is 20% and the State Tax is 10% and of the balance Andy has to pay 7% sales tax and 10% property tax and 7.5% SS tax. How much does Andy have left to pay his bills with.

      I think the point is not being taken here. In ‘America’ today ‘poor’ is a relative term. But “African-americans” are convinced they are STILL slaves of white plantation owners.       The truth is that I’ve been watching Beck almost three years now (Fox and then GBTV), but I was very lazy reading The Blaze until I read some story in May or June and I really enjoyed the comment’s section. It was until this November that I really got engaged and decided to join and post after reading the stories about OWS and such.

      And to be honest, If I talk about the things one learns here with my family or my friends, they look at me as if I’m out of my mind…..the whole world thinks everything is very ok with Obama, and America just have a little recession and Europe is the problem right now. No such thing as Islamization “Are you crazy?”….and things like that….:)

      They did this crap in Jamaica back in the 60-70s and it was a dismal failure. Businesses closed, marital law ensued and along with internal civil war in the streets. The president was ousted and a return to capitalism saw people back to work, earning livings which increased the standard of living for all. These racists running education via a wink and nod from the highest office in the land will be remembered only for their vain attempt at race bating an otherwise satisfied melting pot of Americans who only want jobs returned to this land.

      Slavery has been a part of the human experience for thousands of years. Is it reasonable to ignore that problem by not talking about it? Are we to protect our children from their addressing the reality of slavery, to pretend it never existed, by not letting them know it was and is a problem? And also it is to learned that many nationalities were victims of slavery throughout history, not just the people from Africa.
      Sometimes we can over-protect our children from the realities of human injustices.

    What happened to a teacher’s lesson plan needing approval? I would hope that whomever approved this lesson plan above that teacher gets into just as much trouble as the teacher does….oh, wait…they are probably both union members and will not see any sort of disciplinary actions. And this is another reason why I support homeschooling.

    This is new wave academics that is epitomized in the crown jewel of international socialism’s, International Baccalaureate program, IB. Left-wing academics, educators, are expanding this ‘cross curricular’ indoctrination across America. The IB program has been expanded to now include K through 12.
    The IB program is a youth indoctrination program offered by the international socialists out of Geneva, Switzerland… and unless you are active, it will come to a school near you.

    If this was done at a private busines the person that did this would be fired and there would probably be harassment lawsuits againt that business. Al Sharton would most likely get involved. But instead the TEACHER will continue to teach. Who wants this teacher to teach their child. The children knew better

      ……and rounded up by their OWN people, corralled them like cattle, sold and put them on merchant ships. African law recognized slavery then and slavery is still praticed today in many places on the African continent. Africans turned slave trading into an international business with Europe, the United States and certain countries in South America as early as the 16th century. Rarely do you hear any of the black political constituancy speak about their mother country and what is still going on there.

      What you say is true. but you forgot to list Europe.
      It is also true that African chieftains sold their people for filthy lucre to the slavetraders. Many times the rival of the Chieftain was the first to go.

      It is also true that America did away with slavery FIRST…,long before our European counterparts,and many other countries.

      It is sad that the History of slavery in this nation would have been much different had the Carpetbaggers not infiltrated the South. They did so much damage.

      Who are the Carpetbaggers ? Well.., they are the first Progressives.

      The truth is there if you look for it. You just won’t find it in our education system.

      Not to be silly, but as a kid I watched “The Ten Commandments” long before anything like “Gone With the Wind”, so my first young impression of slaves were the Hebrew slaves! So it tends to stick in my mind as an Egyptian term. Just shows we all grow up with a different perspective until we (and if we) study history more closely. :)

    -The “2000 Profile of College Bound Seniors,” a report from the College Board which administers the SAT, tracked what majors 10,280 Michigan high school students chose in college. The highest SAT scorers shunned education majors, the lowest scorers chose education majors. Of the 6 percent of students who selected education as a major, their average math score was 35 points below the state average and 26 points below in verbal scores. Would-be teacher majors tied with “home economics” majors.

    And the results of their performance are obvious, to the whole world:
    12/7/07 Washington Post: “The scores from the 2006 Program for International Student Assessment showed that U.S. 15-year-olds trailed their peers from many industrialized countries. The average science score of U.S. students lagged behind those in 16 of 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a Paris-based group that represents the world’s richest countries. The U.S. students were further behind in math, trailing counterparts in 23 countries.”
