‘If You Don’t Leave…You Will All Die’: Christians Flee Egyptian Town After Deadly Riot

(The Blaze/AP) — When the angry mob was rampaging through town, storming her home and those of other Christians, the 70-year-old woman hid in her cow pen, pushing a rock against the door. There she cowered for hours, at one point passing out from tear gas being fired by police that seeped in.

When Sameeha Wehba emerged just before dawn, she found she was the only Christian left in this small Egyptian village just south of Cairo, the location of some of the country’s earliest pyramids.

Dahshour’s entire Christian community – as many as 100 families some estimate – fled to nearby towns in the violence earlier this week. The flock’s priest, cloaked in a white sheet to hide him, was taken out in a police van. At least 16 homes and properties of Christians were pillaged and some torched and a church damaged.

The violence was ultimately rooted in a dispute over a badly ironed shirt that escalated into a fight in which a Muslim was burned to death, sparking the rampage by angry Muslims.

“It was a devil’s moment,” Wehba said Thursday at the home of her Muslim neighbors, who have taken her in. “Whoever caused this was the devil’s son.”

The unprecedented exodus underscores how sectarian divisions are bubbling over in the wake of the revolution, in a country where 10 percent of the population is Christian.

Police forces have been weakened and often don’t carry out their duties. Islamists have been emboldened, and in an atmosphere of lawlessness, Muslims and Christians alike seemingly feel freer in unleashing prejudices that were kept in check in the past.

Most notably in Dahshour, police did nothing as tensions spiraled following the burning of the Muslim man late last month.

“What is grave this time is that violence was not only expected but preventable, and security forces failed to prevent it even though they had prior knowledge,” said Hossam Bahgat, head of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, which monitors sectarian violence.

In the past, incidents of sectarian violence in Egyptian towns often took a routine course. A local spat between a Muslim and Christian would escalate, and if a death occurred, violence would be sparked. Police would often see a bit of unrest as a way to let off steam but then negotiate a compromise solution over the death. Officials would deny any sectarian nature to the conflict.

Rage was also largely confined to the family of the killer, but now, the AP reports, angry Muslims are considering the entire Christian community as subject to retaliation.

“Collective retribution is the most dangerous and most likely (form of violence) to spread over time … beyond the site of violence,” Bahgat said.

(Related: ‘Moral Vigilantism’ Reportedly on the Rise in Egypt)

Egypt’s new president, Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, didn’t comment on the violence for several days. On Friday, he appealed to Dahshour’s Christians to return home, promising justice against perpetrators of the violence.

“This was an individual incident and its origin is not about Muslims and Christians, and it happens every day. It was blown out of proportion,” he said.

Many in the village say the Christians should not be allowed to return until the Christian laundry worker who set fire to the Muslim is killed. Other residents take an even harder line and say they shouldn’t be let back at all.

The sentiments were on display even in the neighboring Muslim family that took in Wehba to protect her in case of further reprisals.

Um Mohammed, the 65-year old matron of the household whose son was a friend of the slain man, says Christians can come back, but only if justice is served against the killer. “He burned my heart. He must also be burned. It is retribution,” she said.

“No Christian will return to this village again!” someone shouted from behind Umm Mohammed. It came from a little girl wearing a strict version of the Islamic headscarf, covering her head and much of her torso. The girl – apparently the child of a neighbor – was quickly shushed and hustled out of the room by the family.

“We didn’t kick them out for nothing,” said Ali el-Gizawy, a 47-year old government employee. “They betrayed our trust, and they will not be allowed to return.”

The Christians feel a mix of frustration at the incompetence of authorities, a sense of injustice and a fear their fate may be irreversible.

Kirollos Shehata, a 22-year old Coptic Christian resident, said he hadn’t wanted to leave but finally did as his Muslim neighbors and his own departing family members urged him to go with the others to avoid more violence.

“Now I can’t imagine going back,” he said. For him, it’s not fear of violence but a sense that the Christians humiliated themselves by leaving. “How would we look to the rest of the community and how will people treat us?”

The dispute all began after the Christian laundry man and his family started lobbing firebombs from their roof onto an angry crowd over the “burnt shirt” incident.  One man, Moez Mohammed, caught fire, and for the next two days Mohammed‘s brothers and friends went down the village’s main Christian street, waving firebombs and threatening violence.

When one Christian countered that the whole community was not to blame, a fight broke out, until it was broken up by neighbors.

“They said if you don’t leave the village, you will all die,” Shehata recalled. Aside from the anger over the young man’s death, there was economic jealousy because local Christians are seen as better off, he said. Moreover, some Islamists used the occasion to ignite deep-seated biases against Christians and their local priest and settle scores.

Among the Muslims, stories of Mohammed’s death circulated and grew more gruesome in the retelling.

“His eyes were on fire,” said a young boy in the house where Wehba was a guest. “He ran like a ball of fire,” said the boy’s grandmother. Another described his skin melting. Some said Mohammed had tried to break up the fight between Sameh and his client over the shirt; other said saved a little girl from the fire before he caught flame himself.

Meanwhile, Christian families began sending women and children out of the village, Shehata said.

When Mohammed died on Tuesday, those still there left and police escorted the priest out. After Mohammed’s burial in the evening, hundreds of Muslims began attacking the homes Christians left behind and tried to storm the church, located inside the priest’s house.

Wehba, the elderly woman who lives alone in her family home, was forgotten in the confusion.

“She is like one of us,” said Umm Mohammed, her host, adding that she sleeps next to Wehba to reassure her. “She has no one. And she has nothing to do with it.”

All this violence over a Christian badly ironing a Muslim’s shirt.
A violent Muslim mob formed around the laundry man’s home, so his family fled to the roof and tried to chase the mob away with Molotov cocktails.
A Muslim was burned to death in the process.
Seems like a case of self defense.
Why did the Muslims take their anger out on the whole village of Christians?
    Because Muslims hate Christians.

Islam leaves no room for compassion or justice. On occasion, like the sheltering of the old woman, humanity comes forward.

Jewish & Christian communities have always done better than their muslim counterparts. It was the principle reason the jizyah was levied upon them. It was the principle reason Jews were forcibly removed fm Egypt and many other Arab countries after the 1948 war. More Jews were summarily kicked out w/only the shirts on their backs following the Arab losses than Arabs leaving Israel, either on their own or by being pushed out.

Muslims are from the devil. SERIOUSLY. The Arab population comes from Ismael the bastard son of
Abraham when they didn’t wait for GOD to fulfill His promise. God says He loves ALL His children and I believe He does, but I believe the other forces at work (the evil) are and have always been predominate.

THE REAL GOD does not let people choose Him, He chooses them. All the bowing, scraping kneeling and praying of a life time has no effect on the REAL GOD if it comes from an evil-dominated heart. IF you think about GOD (the REAL GOD) it’s because HE is calling you. Humans can’t choose HIM. THEY can choose to deny Him – that’s what Satan did/does and that’s why these people are so evil. Most, I grant you, are ignorant..but even the most ignorant know that it’s not RIGHT to kill their own children or bury a raped woman up to her neck, blaming her for the rape. These are rabid animals. They tried this about 1000 years ago and were sent (finally after they’d poisoned much of the earth) back to their caves…this is Act II. (it could be III then it’s curtains for all of us).
THINK ABOUT THIS: IF GOD wants us because we freely chose him; why would he want us if we were threatened to come to Him? Islam is Satanic; Counterfeit and nothing to do with the REAL GOD. Sunnis/Shi’tes each have their “Own Messiah” — they copied our faith but didn’t get it right. They are just plain EVIL and we must make it our business to know all about them.

I think if you were to compare the number of these stupid attacks to the billion plus Muslims in the world, you’d find that percentage of Muslims that acted like animals was very low as with every group used to divide humanity for the selfish interests of a few at the top. And to this day, I still struggle to keep my prejudices in check when events like this happen. Then one day I thought to myself if they dropped as many bombs on us as we did them, I’d probably act out the same way. The people we killed didn’t do anything to us and were either just doing their jobs or completely innocent civilians.

I would recommend reading the Qur’an in their you can find their problem. It is the same similar problem you will find in Carl Marx’s teachings, the communist manifesto or maybe in a satanist bible.

I can say with confidence that it by far it lies in the ideology in Islam’s case subscribes to tribalism, racism, slavery and hate etc. Not all Muslims are this way because they are people and not everybody will hate their neighbor or themselves.

Read the book from beginning to end and truly find out what & why they believe. See how & what Islam’s peace really is. Do your own research and learn for yourself.

We dropped bombs on them? I remember the rules of engagement. I also remember that we developed smaller bombs to be dropped from aircraft that would only damage a single building.

I remember artillery fire mission after fire mission being scrubbed because civilians might be or were in the area.
I remember U.S. soldiers manning the same post as Iraqis. Are you going to randomly harass or commit a war crime when you are bunked with an Iraqi unit? We set up the no fly zones that save 10 of thousands of Shia if not 100s if thousands

I remember Al Qaeda purposely targeting civilians in souks/bazaars with car bombs.

The problem is the press. The war has to be fought there too.

      Add some politicians also.

Without leftist press & politicians we could have been in there & out of there with fewer military & civilian casualties.

“I was referring to Muslims in general, and to a specific question, not a war with Egypt.”

So, the occupation of a substantil chunk of Europe in the past centuries, the enslavement of the populations through dhimma system, the stealing of young christian boys to convert them into janissaries, and so on, that does not count? I am from the region (Eastern Europe),and I tell you, hell it does! It permeates the culture there, in many ways. it’s like an inoculation.

“I do not believe that every Arab takes every word in the Koran literally either”

Well, a fw years back, Soddy prince Nayaf was interviewed and noted that the jihadi radicals are just a small minority. About 10% of all muslims, he said. Nothing to see here, is there?

      Hmmm. so that’s 10% of 1.2 billion, which comes to 120,000,000. ‘
OK, let’s just say he exaggerated a bit (though I’d expect him to use as low figure as possible, but maybe math is not his thing), and the actual figure is just 2%. So, that’s 20 million. Even Chinese have total army/navy/marines of about 1 million. True, of those 20 million jihad primed muslims, all don’t have rocket launchers or even AK47s, but people don’t comprehend the sheer number of them, and your dismissive attitude is not helpful any.

Walkabout, I don’t disagree with anything you said. Our boys are the best of the best. My squadron dropped a lot of bombs. Collateral damage happens and is excusable when the reasons for war are just. I don’t feel they were just in 91. I think bad politicians deceived us. I have a dislike towards our politicians that sent us there, not the men in uniform that performed their duty admirably.

Twobyfour, I’m ignorant of the stuff you mentioned in eastern Europe. We were in the Adriatic in 93 with the no-fly zone in Yugoslavia. At the time, I asked why we were defending Muslims from Christians and still don’t understand why we didn’t just mind our own business. I’ll look into it more when I get a chance. I do understand that there is hatred towards us by many Muslims. Still collectivism is dangerous. We can‘t commit genocide to erradicate the threat because it’s just not who were are as a people.

@justangry To be fare I didn’t believe thats what you meant but that is my point. We did not attack them or occupy their holy land.

It has everything to do with Islam. It is the theology and ideology of the Qur’an & tribalistic hate of others who are not of the same thought or even races or creed.

You do not have to be religious to understand the hate & evil of the Qur’an and the extreme deferences of other religions. Like I said before not all you call themselves Muslim are or will be violent because they are human just like everyone else.

Where the deference is just like the Christians who know & act on & live out their faith with works(genuine love, charity, selflessness etc)who are the minority of “Christians”. Then they have the people who clam Christianity and to be Christians but don‘t know what their or the faith is about or even read their own Bible or follow its teachings in context to it’s actual text and are hypocrites.

The Muslims who know & act on & live out their faith with works are (sadly) the violent terrorist who are the minority of their faith. Most Muslims like Christian don‘t actually live their faith in which they are mostly neutral on most things and don’t really want go out of their way or comfort zone for their religion. But act collectively to what ever they were poorly taught to subscribe to.

I really recommend reading both the Qur’an & the Bible old & new testament intensely. They are hard reads but insightful.

      @Enrico,

I was raised as a Christian. I just didn’t find God there, especially in the Old Testament. While I don’t want to knock anyone’s faith, it seems too many people are just accepting all the crap that’s going on based on a prophecy. It’s almost as if we’re not even trying to make peace because it’s ‘inevitable’. The worst part is; I don’t believe the people running the show in any of these countries actually believe in any of it themselves. It’s like they’re just using it to convince people it’s the way things are for their own selfish desires. I believe you when you say the Koran is all kinds of screwed up, I just don’t know how many people over there actually believe in it and how many are just going along with the flow. Regardless, collectivism, hatred and fear only lead to bad things, I am really just not scared of them. I’m more concerned with our federal government and their puppet masters than 3rd world countries.

JUST…I agree that we should just let them kill themselves and waste away in the desert, and I also put the vast majority of the blame on a lack of insight/foresight on the part of our politicians…however, there are a VAST majority of people, both in Washington and everyday Americans, that had totally pure intentions in supporting both wars. This turned out to be misguided, but it has VERY little to do with why they hate us and our culture. They have been hating us for far longer then desert storm.

The RP idea of them leaving us alone if we leave them alone is FAR more ignorant and uniformed than WMDs and spreading democracy to oppressed people. (how were any of us supposed to know that Muslim slime WANTED to be lorded over by tyrants because they are soulless animals?)

p.s. we raided AT LEAST a dozen rape dungeons/found violated young boys and girls (mostly boys strangely enough) and we saw so many little girls/women brutalized and mistreated…I will NEVER change the way I feel about anyone that claims Islam…they are a curse upon every land they inhabit and have no place in civilization

@justangry, “While I don’t want to knock anyone’s faith, it seems too many people are just accepting all the crap that’s going on based on a prophecy. It’s almost as if we’re not even trying to make peace because it’s ‘inevitable’. ”

That’s exactly what I believe. Most Christians are docile.. I know plenty of Christians who do not care at all. Their belief is the rapture is going to happen, Why should i care? I won’t be here.

My question is, When did Americans start taking everything on their knees? When will we stand up?

@justangry I agree that most in power of their governments don’t fully, truly or even follow/believe the Qur’an. The only regime I believe actually have a large amount people who believe/follow the Qur’an is Iran and know maybe Egypt with the Muslim Brotherhood now in control.

They also use the evil book as a power structurer again similar to communism to control/use the lemmings. It is the Bible flipped upside down on its head for the purposes of slavery, control and power.

“I don’t think this deplorable incident occurred because Muslims hate Christians; I think it’s just a freak accident in which sentiments were not controlled by the Police and the situation went out of control.”
      from m-w
      Definition of SENTIMENT
      1
a : an attitude, thought, or judgment prompted by feeling : predilection b : a specific view or notion : opinion

So its not about their attitude of hate its just about their attitudes of hate that where not controlled? Double speak much? Yeah they hate them , stop calling the dog a cat.

“In Egypt, Christians have been living there for centuries with minimal problem. Let’s not forget it all started with “badly ironed shirt” by a Christian laundry man. The basis of the fight wasn’t the religion, it was the “badly ironed shirt”.”

This is why they attacked all the launders right…. I mean if the fight was about poor quality launders they would have attacked them. No they attacked Christians … why because of their sentiments of hate. This is VERY clear and your obviously delusional.
I am willing to secede that Egyptians in that past may have been more tolerant, but i could stay the same for the US for centuries North Americans never invaded to had any hostilities to the middle east. This is true, however this HISTORICAL FACT has no barring on our current treatment or reality of our interactions with the middle east.

“We didn’t kick them out for nothing,” said Ali el-Gizawy, a 47-year old government employee. “They betrayed our trust, and they will not be allowed to return.”
I suspect “betraying our trust” means they (the Christians) didn’t keep to their bargain of dhimmitude.
In Islam, the conquered have 3 choices – conversion to Islam, dhimmitude or death.
Dhimmitude means you are subservient to Muslims, meaning they are your masters and they can do what they will to you. Your lot in life should be worse than the poorest Muslim and you should do the jobs no Muslims will do, (garbage people of Cairo are Christians).
In return for their “protection” – (not killing you) -you have to pay them a tax, it’s much like being shaken down by the Mafia.
Christian communities have been in Egypt long before the false prophet Muhammad was born, but now they are being driven out of all Islamic lands.
Maybe for a reason beyond the hatred that Muslims have for them.

I’m beginning to think that the only way to change these animals (not that even one of them would be worth the effort) would be to engage in a massive program to bring western television into every home 24 hours a day with a requirement that they watch a minimum of 6 hours a day. They can watch whatever channe4ls they want, but at least 6 hours a day.

These “things” will never change, because the only thing that ever changes in the ME is WHO is telling you WHAT to think and believe.

They need to be bombarded with images of other races/religions/cultures interacting and allowed their own thoughts. The comedies/dramas/horror/war/reality…whatever. Until they see alternatives to the way they live and have something to compare it too…they’ll continue their ingrained core beliefs forced upon them by centuries of being in the dark ages. Their minds have been controlled for too long by religious zealots.

Let them watch Gilligan’ Island 6 hours a day for 6 months and see how they change.

Amazing. Thurston Howell III and his wife Lovey must have been Presbyterians. I know that Tina Louise was Jewish. So we might be able to claim that Ginger Grant was also Jewish. Dawn Wells and Bob Denver were both close friends throughout their lives. Both had legal issues with smoking pot. I have no idea what there religious faiths were, and I should point out that Dawn Wells is still alive. The Professor, Russell Johnson, was a hero from WW2, who should be hated by a commenter on this article because, he conducted aerial bombing raids of Japanese targets. Yet, for some reason the Japanese don’t carry decades old grudges that the Muslim world is notorious for. And who can forget the Skipper, Alan Hale. None of these folks except for Tina Louise were serious about their religious affiliation throughout their lives. So I am sure they would be summarily executed in the Islamic world except for Tina Louise who would be forced to pay the jizya tax for being a Jew, if she survived the attempted rape by 300 sex crazed men in Tahrir Square. so much for the Gilligan’s Island idea. IT WON”T WORK!

Of course Obama is a very bad president, but he’s going up against a very bad candidate with absolutely no personality, that basically has the same policies as himself. Not only that, I’m not really expecting our votes to amount to much with that Soros connected Spanish company counting them. The conservative base has been split and I can’t imagine Romney will win over too many independents. I mean class warfare isn’t popular on the Blaze, but even Forbes says Romney’s proposed budget gives the wealthiest Americans tax breaks, which I don’t think will be popular. And of course, it’s not like he can run on civil liberties or a freedom platform.

God calls his own out..wherever they may be..they are brothers to the Jews..blood brothers..it’s too bad that someone handed them a religion for manipulation and control..so that they would be used as pawns for politcal purposes ..You never see their leaders involved in suicide bombings.. General Georges Sada I believe was one of the only Christians left in Iraq which used to be predominately Christian..but when a new regime took over..declared Islam to be their state religion..Sadas saved Israel from being bombed by Hussein..He wrote a book also..but he told the young men that their leaders were not going out and suicide bombing themselves and that they shouldn’t either.
