Illinois Churches Urge Gay Clergy to Legalize Their Partnerships, Perform Civil Unions

Church leaders in Illinois are taking the state’s new same-sex civil union law to heart. While some denominations are planning to perform homosexual unions, others are encouraging openly-gay clergy to formally legalize their partnerships.
These sweeping developments come as the dust settles on a new law that allows gay couples to enter into unions. When Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill back in January, he proudly exclaimed, “We are showing the world that the people of Illinois believe in equality for all.” With the legal debate now settled, the new regulation is beginning to impact Christian denominations.
Here’s a report from WLFD-TV that covers Illinois’ commencement of same-sex civil unions:
The Chicago Tribune reports that the new law is encouraging church leaders to officiate civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. Additionally, Chicago’s Episcopal Church is now urging its clergy who find themselves in committed homosexual relationships to make them legal.
Lutherans are following suit, but with some interesting caveats. Clergy are permitted to officiate same-sex civil unions with permission from the bishop, yet they are barred from performing civil unions for straight couples:
The prohibition on civil unions for straight couples upholds the church’s teaching on marriage and family, Chicago Lutheran Bishop Wayne Miller said.
“If pastors start performing civil unions, it sets up a very confusing message about whether or not this church still holds marriage as the standard for how a man and a woman enter into a lifelong commitment with one another,” Miller said.
Unlike the Episcopal Church, neither the Presbyterian nor the United Church of Christ will require or urge openly-gay clergy in committed relationships to enter into civil unions.
As laws that govern marriage are examined around the nation, all faiths and denominations will be challenged. These latest changes showcase how some Christian leaders will choose to react to new legislative realities. What do you think about these new developments?

I think this is further proof that the words of Jesus, Paul, etc. are true that say the “church”, many would “fall away” with apostasy…they will search and only go to those that teach the things they want to hear. Perfect fulfillment of prophecy. These are the ones who would rather please men rather than God…they’ll have more people/money in their congregations and won’t be made fun of or anything by the growing population in this country. Nothing new of course but it’s growing excessively and dangerously now. Yes, Christians will have to make firm decisions – whether to please man or God. This evil cancer will grow bc of human nature & strong satanic forces working on them. For anyone who wants to be enlightened – read Romans 1 (Bible) that tells you how it all started.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 1:44pmNo. All denominations will not be challenged. Real Christian churches will hold fast to the scripture. The PCA (Presbyterian Church of America, very different from the PCUSA) is one of many reformed and conservative denominations that refuse to bend God‘s law to fit man’s. No law formed by man could make a true Christian change their belief about the immorality of the homosexual lifestyle. Any church that accepts homosexual unions, “marriages,” or relationships does not worship the Lord. They worship man.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 1:59pmWay to take a verse out of context. The Hebrew law was about setting them apart from the barbaric cultures that surrounded them. Not cutting yourself when a loved one dies is just plain common sense. And the marking of the body was a common practice among the surrounding nations, particularly Egypt. They would mark themselves to show religious or tribal affiliation, hence in that culture it was the equivalent of idol worship.
We don’t get to pick and choose which parts of the Bible we like, and leave the rest. Take it or leave it, but it is a package deal, not a “buffet” to select our favorites and pass on the less savory parts.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 5:11pmMikeDiesel, you way I take that verse way out of context and that tattooing was a barbaric practice of foreign cultures. So what? A sin is a sin is a sin. You probably have tattoos so you ignore the commandment against tattoos, another fellow is probably gay and ignores that commandment as well. How are you different from him? You’re both doing what you like. And don’t get me started with masturbation! Very few people give a darn about the sin of Onan (which was spilling his seed and not getting some woman pregnant, a woman who wasn’t even his wife but he had to impregnate her because his brother married her and died before he could, yup, this was based on another weird commandment).
Now don’t take me wrong, I believe in God. But unlike the Muslims, I will decide what to follow from the bible and what to ignore. Besides, I can’t afford 600 wives and 300 concubines like King Salomon.

Ohhh, how you and those like you love to cherry pick certain verses. To bring up such a quote, you must seem to forget that pesky little thing Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first” (John 8:7)
This was in direct response to the scribes and Pharisees who brought a woman to him who said that she had been caught in the very act of adultery and that Moses commanded in the law to stone such people.
You pull things out of the Old Testament either purposefully or through ignorance without realizing that once God sent Jesus to save us of our sins, things changed. “For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change in the law” (Hebrews 7:12). This was referring to the priesthood going from the Levites to now Jesus Christ. It‘s also why animal sacrifices aren’t needed any longer because Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice.
So don‘t pretend to know what you are talking about when it comes to this because apparently you don’t. Have a wonderful day. :)

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:34pm@ Individual — No, it’s not. It’s generically Biblical in nature, insofar as the Western mindset has been shaped.
On the other hand, nature itself tends to reject homosexuality. No very PC, I know, but reasonably factual. When you see male animals hump one another, it’s not for pleasure; it’s for territory or females. When mares try to hump in a pasture, it’s for lack of a stallion. Put one out there w/the girls as see them line up to get things taken care of. Even among bonobos, who have what we’d call casual sex, do not practice homosexuality.
Nature being fallen does produce “oops” offspring. Accidents happen, and there may be some homosexuals who have that biology. A professor once told our class that his test is to ask how long has the suspected homosexual known. If the person answers “always” then it‘s a nature’s accident. If the person can point to an event or series of events or a sense of growing into the pattern of homosexual behavior, then they have issues that can be treated. Once treated, they can resume a normal heterosexual life.
Even so, homosexuals only make up 2-3 percent of the population. Given the noise they make, you’d think we were talking 50 percent!

Logical fallacy: appeal to tradition. Using that logic, women should never have been given equal rights to men and should still be considered chattel, slavery would be completely justified by long history of being considered moral. Arguments must always be evaluated based on their logical consistency and validity, not upon conclusions people in the past made. I have not heard an argument against gay marriage that is not based in religion, logical fallacy, or a lack of understanding of the difference between religious and civil marriage.

Natural law has nothing to do with biology! Natural law analyzes man’s actions “in the state of nature” when he is unimpeded by government. In the state of nature anyone can enter into the contract of civil marriage, regardless of gender, and they can call it whatever they want. Therefore for government to deny individuals the right to freely enter into contract is a violation of natural law.The real natural rights argument is that government should have no voice in the definition of marriage, nor should it attempt to social engineer by handing out certain privileges or penalties to people who are married.
Also, if civil marriage were about procreation, infertile couples and couples who choose not to procreate must not be considered married. Your definition of marriage is based on a collectivist opinion on the welfare of the group instead of the rights of the individual. Do not sully natural rights philosophy by pretending it has anything to do with utilitarianism, biology, or collectivism.

Report Post »Therefore God gave them over in their sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the TRUTH og God for a lie and worshiped and SERVED CREATED things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised amen. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness,EVIL,GREED,and DEPRAVITY.They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, slanderers,Godhaters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful;they invent ways of doing evil;they disobey their parents;they are senseless,FAITHLESS,heartless, ruthless.Although they know Gods RIGHTEOUS decree that those who do such things deserve DEATH,they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
Romans 1. read the rest for yourself.
Im not sure what book this quote clergy is using-maybe they should count money tithes less and read the BIBLE more.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:25pm@forestnomad – not even close. What we Christian object to is having our faith denigrated by those who so obviously do not follow it. We do not appreciate homosexuals calling themselves by our name and not living in accordance w/the Biblical imperative of a holy life. We equally do not like it when others of notorious sin who refuse to repent take our name in the same vein.
If you wish to be saved by Christ’s atoning Blood, then repent and live as if you really meant it. Otherwise, admit you are a pagan and have no intention of living like Christ.
This does not mean that Christians do not love those who are outside the Name of Jesus; rather, it means we pray for them and try meeting their needs. There are devoted Christians, living holy lives themselves, working w/HIV/AIDS patients who contracted their disease because of lifestyle choices. Ancient Christians did the same for the lepers of their day. To love God in Christ, means that His love spills over into the world for all to see. Witness: Mather Theresa!
Love also says “no.” In this case, “no” to a lifestyle that does great harm to its practitioners. To homosexuals who were born that way — live celibate lives that are pleasing to God and to yourself in the end.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:27pmIf this doesn’t prove that churches are becoming nothing more than a racket to make tax free dollars nothing does. I gave up on church along time ago I realized that it was nothing but an industry to collect money from people who believe in Christ. Couple that with churches promoting socialist governmental reform via social justice and we have a big problem with religion. That needs to be adresses for if they want to influence elections and policy they need to relinquish their tax exempt status.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:34pmWe are having that issue at my church as we speak. Our church is gonna stand their ground. That is this. If you are of homosexual interest you can be a member of the church. If you choose to be a Deacon, Elder or Pastor that is not permissible at this church. If a church wants to preach with gays knock yourself out. Stop shoving your sexuality down everyones collective throats.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:41pmFirst off, I don’t know why government needs to be involved in marriage at all.
Government makes it nothing more than a contract between two people, in which case it IS discrimination to refuse that right to two people because of their gender.
The government adds WHAT to marriage? Screening out blood relatives? I don’t think they actually do that.
Blood tests? I think that is over with, too. Oh, we get tax deductions? Most deductions are wrong because they are just “social engineering.” This is too. But, we now see that children are no longer the product of marriage – WAY TOO MANY children are born to single parents.
So, why don’t we get government OUT of the marriage business?
I don’t want anyone telling MY church what to do or how to practice my religion.
However, if some other church believes gays should marry, it is none of my business.
If it neither breaks my leg, nor picks my pocket, what business is it of mine??? -Thomas Jefferson

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 2:41pm@Forestnomad, Marriage is a religious institution, and as such is measured in religious terms. Homosexual conduct is stated as sin over and over again both in old and new testimant. The real issue has always been, why in the world does government have ANYTHING to do with marriage?
As for these false purveyors of ministry, they are judged in the end by God, he has spoken against such people in scripture often and I think it does not bode well for them.
I assume you dont actually care about what people of faith think and are just trying to be clever with your stereotypical attack, but in the off chance you want to engage people who dont think the same way you do try researching the topic to understand why people react the way they do to the mainstreaming of sin.
@Encinom, God doesnt make homosexuals, nice try. He doesnt make adulterers, or fornicators either. All those activities are sexual sin, sinful nature being fullfilled instead of denied.
None of us can avoid being sinners, the best we can do is deny our sin, accept Christ to save us from the sin that defeats us, and love one another, as commanded by our Lord.

The same reason straight people do. Love, companionship, loyalty, and all the wonderful benefits provided to married couples. That seems like a pretty simple answer and a very valid argument for gay marriage. :)

It goes against what we are taught in the Bible. You can have all the love and whatnot you want in your perverted ways, but don’t drag the Christian faith into this perversion. Why does it have to be a religious thing? Why can’t it just be a legal thing leaving religion out of it?

Posted on June 3, 2011 at 12:00amThose who believe in Jesus Christ, study his word and keep the commandments retain your faith. Days as these are foretold in God’s word. Wolves in sheep clothing we know would come. Leave these viper nests. Rebuke them in Christ’s name and continue shining the light of Christ for all to see. Reach out to your brothers/sisters in these viper nests and share God’s truths around the perverted teachings being told. Love them, pray for them and serve them thru God’s word with all your ability. Love conquers evil.
Keep your faith in Jesus and keep God’s commandments. Love your neighbor but do not partake in his evil deeds. Stay safe!
