‘I’m Dead! Bye!’ Skydiver Films His Own 15,000 Ft. Free Fall

Five years ago, New Zealand skydiver Michael Holmes jumped out of an airplane with a parachute attached to his back. The air whipped over his body as gravity pulled him to the ground in an exhilarating, controlled fall. At 15,000 ft. above ground, he pulled his parachute. And that’s when an awesome jump turned to awful.
At that moment, Holmes’s parachute malfunctioned. He started an incredible free fall traveling at an extreme rate of speed and headed for some vegetation. Eventually, he crashed. And survived.
The entire incident was caught on a helmet camera, where Holmes can be heard declaring “I’m dead!“ and ”Bye!”:
Incredibly, Holmes suffered nothing more than a couple broken bones. Consequently, his story was featured on the National Geographic show “The Indestructibles” on Sunday. The show looks at miraculous survival stories, and examined how it was possible for Holmes to survive.
In an Q&A with National Geographic, Holmes said a design flaw in the parachute caused it to malfunction. He also said he never considered not skydiving again.
“It’s my life, it’s what I love, and I can’t imagine not doing it,” he explained. “If you have a car crash, most people will still drive again. Skydiving again to me is no different from driving again”
The show will air again on July 21 on the NatGeo channel at 10 pm ET.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 12:30pmAs a skydiver I would like to ask about the sentence in the article “Holmes said a design flaw in the parachute caused it to malfunction.”
Report Post »A design flaw? That’s a comment someone would make to cover up their own screw up.
How many jumps did this person have? I’d bet he was recently off of student status.
If there was any ‘flaw’ it would have been his packing job or something similar.
This whole episode looks like he panicked and didn’t cut away. He rode a ‘snivel’ to the ground.
“If at first you don’t succede then skydiving is not for you.” This person should take up bowling and quit giving skydiving a bad name.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 1:11pm@ Your Name Here
He was doing the video on the tandem skydive, so I would say he’s very experienced. He definitely did not panic and it was a malfunctioning main “not a snivel” he had the cutaway handle in his hand (yellow wires). There‘re a lot of work jumps that people don’t have time to pack their own chute between loads. When you don’t pack yourself you sometimes get surprised!
You lack the knowledge to criticize this jumper!

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 1:15pmThe amazing part is that he: At 15,000 ft. above ground, he pulled his parachute. He must be the only skydiver ever to have jumped out of an airplane and GAINED ALTITUDE before he pulled! He obviously did not know how to handle a simple malfunction.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 1:20pmIt seems to me Your Name Here (aka You Can’t Fix Stupid), that you‘re speaking from experience regarding the cover up of one’s own “screw up.” Since the answer to your question isn’t provided, I think it prudent to just use a little common sense here before accusing the survivor of such a miracle that it was he who caused the mishap to occur in the first place.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 2:50pmGeez, “YOUR NAME HERE”… When I see posts like yours, my first reaction is “here is a guy who has probably no idea wha he is talking about. Gladly, I was right again… Let‘s take a look Michael Holmes ’credentials at the time of the accident:
1. Over 7000 jumps
2. AFF instructor, Coach, Tandem instructor
3. Member of the British Skydiving team
4. Reigning New Zealand Skydiving Swoop Champion
5. Spanish Nationals 4-way Gold
6. Spanish Nationals 8-way Bronze
Yeah, he definitely had no idea what he was doing, he was just off his student status and he also definitely has his share of giving skydiving a bad name, huh?
Here is an article from 2007 where he describes the design flaw and the sequence of events:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-435377/The-man-fell-12-000-ft—survived.html
And here is his website, easily found from a simple google search of this name:
http://www.mikeyholmes.com/
Good luck next time when you try to look knowledgeable at someone else’s expense. Good luck skydiving and hopefully you will get to your 1000th jump so you can maybe be 1/7 of what that guy is.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 3:14pmThis is amazing that he survived.
My grandfather was special forces, airborne, during Vietnam and earlier conflicts. A few days before deploying he was asked to train a group of 82nd on how to make a jump. During this explanation, his chute failed and he crashed to the ground, breaking almost every bone in his body. He spent the next few years in a military hospital recovering from that. This man is incredibly lucky that he got off so easily.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 6:22pmThis is an amazing story of luck. I know first hand what it’s like to have a major skydiving malfunction and survive. It happened to me on my FIRST static-line jump back in college, and I can attribute it to a poorly packed chute (an old Army T-10 “cheapo”, which was substituted at the last minute for a PC sport chute my jumpmaster and I’d packed earlier), and MY poor form when I exited the aircraft. In a nutshell, I ended up falling head-first from 5,000 ft (with my legs spread wide and my arms pulled in close to my body) and a “streamer” (what happens when the pilot chute snags the bungees on the main chute backpack… creating what’s called a “horseshoe”). I remember waiting for the main chute to open, then noticed our airplane circling me in a spiral, but it was UPSIDE DOWN…… only after I looked over my shoulder to view my chute did I realize it was snagged on the backpack and streaming, then I looked “up” and saw the earth rapidly approaching ZOOM-LENS fashion ! My altimeter showed 2,000 feet, and I decided (correctly) NOT to pull my reserve…if I had, it surely would’ve become entangled with my main… so I reached back and grabbed the risers on the pilot chute and PULLED LIKE HELL with ALL MY MIGHT (praying LIKE HELL !). I remember my altimeter showed 900 feet, just before I literally ripped the bungee from the pack, then “POW!!, my main opened (blowing two panels). I’d ruptured an intestine, but lived. I was 17, and later made ONE MORE jum

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 12:26pmI was Army Airborne with 21 jumps to my credit, but I have absolutely no desire to sky dive.
If this guy‘s chute hadn’t partially opened and he hadn’t landed in the vegetation, he would have been dead.
On one jump I had what is called a “blown panel,” along with twisted risers which forced my head downward against my chest so I couldn’t check my canopy, but I heard everyone above me screaming, “Pull your reserve! Pull your reserve!” They went out the door before me, but were above me yelling frantically.
When I spun free enough to raise my head I saw part of my chute in shreds. I pulled my reserve and frantically shook it out. I felt a pull on my back slowing me down about two seconds before I hit the ground.
The medic saw the whole affair and was over at my landing spot with his ambulance before I landed. “He said, “I didn’t think you were going to pull it in time.” My throat was almost too dry to respond with, “Yeah, me too.”

But I was, and I actually DID hurt myself skydiving. Later, when I became an Army helicopter driver stationed at Ft. Bragg, I had friends in the Airborne who also flew but chose to remain on jump status…. and I remember telling them they had to be NUTS betting their $400/month flight pay against their $125/month jump pay.
Bottom line, regardless of whether or not you get paid to jump out of airplanes, those who do are ALL a little bit crazy. But unless you’ve done it, you’ll never know for sure !

All chutes and containers have serial numbers, if you take your rig in for a reserve repack (required every 180 days) most all riggers will run the numbers thru the data base. Every repack is logged and signed by a licensed rigger!
The USPA has 34,000 members. It estimates that about 350,000 people complete more than 3 million jumps in a typical year.
The big question is always, “How dangerous is skydiving?” Each year, about 30 people die in parachuting accidents in the United States, or roughly one person per 100,000 jumps. Look at the US Skydiving Incident Reports to get an idea of the types of problems that lead to fatalities. If you make one jump in a year, your chance of dying is 1 in 100,000.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 10:38amIt`s never a good idea to jump from a plane. If we were to fly we would have wings. How many times have we seen these people fall to the ground. And the rest of the jumpers continue to jump. Who cares if they fall to their death?

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 10:48amMy dad was a private pilot and friends with jumpers at the airport .. they tried to get him to do it … and he told them in no uncertain terms “ he was not jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft” .. now this was a man who had raced cars, motorcycles and gone white water rafting well into his 70′s … but not jumping out of GOOD AIRCRAFT!

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 10:59amI’m never going to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, or go in a boat made to sink and come back up (submarine). I toured a sub when I was active duty and the racks (beds) look like one could barely get in it. They’re stacked 4 high and they “hot rack” it, assigning 5 men to 4 racks.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 11:28amMutslie……yes, the next of kin does. It takes a brave or insane person to jump from a plane with a man made security device between them and the gound. They probably sell them life insurance too. Just kiddin. Lotus.
