‘I’m Just Saying’: Obama Doubts Blacks Watch ‘Meet the Press’

During a reported meeting with black journalists and bloggers, President Obama began speculating about the newswatching habits of black people — and apparently he doesn’t think they get up on Sunday mornings to watch NBC:
The media is changing so rapidly that more websites, like you guys do every day, do two things. Number one, it allows us to reach audiences that may not be watching Meet The Press. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I’m just saying, it might be a different demographic.
As for the mysterious videographer that is apparently giving black people their news. The name tag that flutters in and out of the video seems to be that of someone named “Natas–“ who works with an organization called ”The YBF”:
A quick Google search revealed that YBF is the name of the blog Young, Black, and Fabulous, a site specializing in black celebrity gossip. “THE YBF blasts all that is fabulous and foolywang with over 13 million readers a month joining in on the ish talking,” its website says. “The focus is fashion, fabulousness, gossip, and foolywang.”
“Natas–,” then, could be Natasha Eubanks, YBF’s CEO, editor, and writer:
Natasha’s adivce to the next generation: “Don’t let anyone discourage you, even your parents. Even when you want to go Left and they want you to go Right.”

There should always be those movers and shakers in our community who think big and do things, so people like you and me can go to work for them and support our families. People who have a vision of something better and the energy and desire to do it.
Like most progressives, you can’t stand the idea of being a common man. You need to level the playing field, but since you don’t have the talent or ability to raise yourself up, you need to try to bring the uncommon man down. Take his money in taxes. Pitiful thinking.

Posted on October 14, 2010 at 3:11pmHe’s probably right about blacks not watching Meet the Press, not because they’re all still asleep, but because the more educated members of the community are all in church. This is a real cultural difference between black and white Americans. The intellectual segment of the white community is more likely to not care about religion, or to go just for social reasons. (These are broad generalities; I understand that there are many, many exceptions!)

Maybe their in church? Maybe they’re sleeping in….I mean, some people enjoy that. Maybe an early breakfast. Maybe, just maybe, you get so much news during the week, that it’s nice to not watch it on the weekend.
Remember when you used to be able to watch cartoons in the morning? Now they call that Meet the Press.

It’s the parentheses that really get me here. If not for this little bit of commentary, I would have never thought to equate this meeting with the decades long institutionalization of racial violence in which the civil rights of black people were denied and disenfranchisement was enforced by the ever-present threat of lynching. I bet if Emmett Till were here, he would be outraged! (Let’s pause while you wikipedia Emmett Till). Black journalists and bloggers meeting together! I assume you are in favor of some kind of affirmative action program, so that every gathering must include a certain percentage of whites, blacks and asians.
But wait: I particularly like how The Blaze‘s article goes on to at least partially justify the President’s remarks by their fine research (heavily dependent on Google) into YBF, a site for celebrity gossip. Do you think that the average follower of YBF watches Meet the Press? I would suspect that your average non-racist non-partisan market analyst would say that this program and this website appeal to DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHICS. Which is (are you following me?) exactly what the President said.
So please. Think for a second before throwing around the word racist.
