‘Imperialism’ and ‘Genocide’: The 4th of July According to MSNBC

When readers have finished with this story, we would be very surprised if they didn’t end up with a highly pessimistic query: Is there anything MSNBC can cover without spoiling it?

The answer, as it turns out, may be “no.” For you see, even on the 4th of July, arguably the one day when every American, regardless of party affiliation, should be celebrating, MSNBC has decided it wants to remind its viewers of just how many awful things America has been responsible for. Why? Perhaps for the sake of perspective, or for the sake of encouraging liberal guilt, but quite frankly, we don‘t feel qualified to speculate on the root of an entire network’s neuroses. All we know is that while everyone else is celebrating, MSNBC is letting their resident Jeremiah Wright admirer, Melissa Harris Perry, say things like this, according to Mediaite:

In what is sure to rankle the feathers of many conservatives, MSNBC weekend host Melissa Harris-Perry took to her show Sunday to ponder the meaning of Independence Day, highlighting mostly the stains on American history. “It’s ours, all of it,” she said. “The imperialism, the genocide, the slavery, also the liberation and the hope and the deeply American belief that our best days still lie ahead of us.”

“Independence Day is more aspirational than actual,” she began her monologue. “We have longed defined the American Dream with commodities, a home of ones own, better education for the kids, family vacation and a car to the vacation in. And if we measure the dream by acquisitions, we’re in trouble. National unemployment remains above 8 percent. Wages have dropped, and the median net worth of American families plummeted by almost 40 percent.”[...]

She continued on to explain that her favorite story for this Fourth of July is one of people who are “not technically free.” She described a group of 27 inmates who recently completed their GEDs at the jail on Rikers Island. “Despite being incarcerated, they hold fast to the optimistic belief that education, hard work and second chances are still the stuff of America. And that they have a right to take part in the dream.”

“So on the Fourth of July,” Harris-Perry concluded, “I’m going to think of the Rikers Island graduates, and I’m going to wave a flag without hesitation — not because I’ve forgotten my nation’s many wrongs, but because I remember them. And I am nonetheless proud of my country, not for its perfection, because the alternative is too grim, the alternative is to give up on the dream of the nation founded in the belief, if not yet the practice that all are created, all deserve freedom, and all have the right to pursue happiness. Now, that is a dream worth celebrating — with fireworks.”

Watch Perry’s bizarre rant below:

Debunking Perry’s attempt to inject guilt into the national dialogue could take pages of prose, and quite frankly, we wonder if there is even a point, considering that her worldview appears to be influenced more by a quasi-religious faith in this country’s failings than by anything else. However, we are going to accept one part of her statement – that as of now, the American Dream is in danger of being more aspirational than actual. As to whose fault that recent development is, we doubt MSNBC has any interest in covering the subject.

Okay, America isn’t perfect. Name one country that is or ever has been. However, the problem lies not with the Founding Fathers but rather those who followed who failed to live up to the ideals of the Revolution. What they Declared and the Constitution they wrote are the very instruments for correcting the flaws as they arose. If there is one place where they came up short is believing that all men WANT to be free! We have too many who have opted for being taken cared of, like the young lady begging on the corner. I suggested she go talk to a Navy recruiter and stop begging. Did she? I don’t know. Hopefully, she will see the benefit of taking personal responsibility for her life vice taking from others.
No doubt the Founding Fathers would be appalled at what has become of their great struggle to be free. Last week saw us become slaves of the State! I guess 235 years of freedom is long enough for the Democrats. According to them we are too stupid to live our lives on our own without their meddling in our lives. The Supreme Court seems to have agreed.

Even though the issue of slavery is often raised as a discrediting charge against the Founding Fathers, the historical fact is that slavery was not the product of, nor was it an evil introduced by, the Founding Fathers; slavery had been introduced to America nearly two centuries before the Founders. As President of Congress Henry Laurens explained:

“I abhor slavery. I was born in a country where slavery had been established by British Kings and Parliaments as well as by the laws of the country ages before my existence. . . . In former days there was no combating the prejudices of men supported by interest; the day, I hope, is approaching when, from principles of gratitude as well as justice, every man will strive to be foremost in showing his readiness to comply with the Golden Rule ["do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Matthew 7:12].” 1

Prior to the time of the Founding Fathers, there had been few serious efforts to dismantle the institution of slavery. John Jay identified the point at which the change in attitude toward slavery began:

“Prior to the great Revolution, the great majority . . . of our people had been so long accustomed to the practice and convenience of having slaves that very few among them even doubted the propriety and rectitude of it.” 2

While Jefferson himself had introduced a bill designed to end slavery, 3 not all of the southern Founders were opposed to slavery. According to the testimony of Virginians James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and John Rutledge, it was the Founders from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia who most strongly favored slavery. 4

Yet, despite the support for slavery in those States, the clear majority of the Founders opposed this evil. For instance, when some of the southern pro-slavery advocates invoked the Bible in support of slavery, Elias Boudinot, President of the Continental Congress, responded:

“[E]ven the sacred Scriptures had been quoted to justify this iniquitous traffic. It is true that the Egyptians held the Israelites in bondage for four hundred years, . . . but . . . gentlemen cannot forget the consequences that followed: they were delivered by a strong hand and stretched-out arm and it ought to be remembered that the Almighty Power that accomplished their deliverance is the same yesterday, today, and for ever.” 5

Many of the Founding Fathers who had owned slaves as British citizens released them in the years following America’s separation from Great Britain (e.g., George Washington, John Dickinson, Caesar Rodney, William Livingston, George Wythe, John Randolph of Roanoke, and others). Furthermore, many of the Founders had never owned any slaves. For example, John Adams proclaimed, “[M]y opinion against it [slavery] has always been known . . . [N]ever in my life did I own a slave.” 6

For many of the Founders, their feelings against slavery went beyond words. For example, in 1774, Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Rush founded America’s first anti-slavery society; John Jay was president of a similar society in New York.

Other prominent Founding Fathers who were members of societies for ending slavery included Richard Bassett, James Madison, James Monroe, Bushrod Washington, Charles Carroll, William Few, John Marshall, Richard Stockton, Zephaniah Swift, and many more. In fact, based in part on the efforts of these Founders, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts began abolishing slavery in 1780; 7 Connecticut and Rhode Island did so in 1784; 8 Vermont in 1786; 9 New Hampshire in 1792; 10 New York in 1799; 11 and New Jersey did so in 1804. 12

While much progress was made by the Founders to end the institution of slavery, unfortunately what they began was not fully achieved until generations later. Yet, despite the strenuous effort of many Founders to recognize in practice that “all men are created equal,” charges persist to the opposite. In fact, revisionists even claim that the Constitution demonstrates that the Founders considered one who was b l a c k to be only three-fifths of a person. This charge is yet another falsehood. The three-fifths clause was not a measurement of human worth; rather, it was an anti-slavery provision to limit the political power of slavery’s proponents. By including only three-fifths of the total number of slaves in the congressional calculations, Southern States were actually being denied additional pro-slavery representatives in Congress.

The Republican Party pioneered the right of women to vote and was consistent in its support throughout the long campaign for acceptance. It was the first major party to advocate equal rights for women and the principle of equal pay for equal work.

The Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, N.Y., in 1848 marked the beginning of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. Two years later there was a nationwide meeting in Worcester, Mass.

By 1870, the Massachusetts Republican State Convention had already seated two suffragettes, Lucy Stone and Mary A. Livermore, as delegates. In addition, the National Republican Convention of 1872 approved a resolution favoring the admission of women to “wider fields of usefulness” and added that “the honest demand of this class of citizens for additional rights … should be treated with respectful consideration.”

This nation is drowning in an ocean of unborn blood. What makes me mourn is the fact that many people in this nation have put a bunch of Godless monsters in charge with their vote. I love this nation, and I have served in the Armed Forces also, but make not mistake…we are headed down the wrong path. WE THE PEOPLE have elected these lieing monsters to power! A politicians greatest fear is to be measured by righteous standards. You can see this by the threats against churches every election cycle. A politician isn’t required to preach, but he or she definitely needs a moral compass. That compass is God. Godless people make Godless laws. That’s a fact. Quit ELECTING these godless, immoral people and you will see this nation turn around. God bless the USA.

It’s sad that someone like this who has benefited from her sex and color can, in good conscience stand there and talk about Americans as if the country is nothing but a bastion of racism and hatred, yet “there is still much to celebrate.” What’s even more ridiculous is Obama claiming that the only reason someone would oppose him is because of racism. He has often given speeches where he has told young people that the American Dream is dead and racism reigns supreme. It’s kind of hilarious that anyone would buy that tripe. Apparently, he hasn’t noticed that, with no qualifications, a black man became president of the United States, and the most powerful man on earth. To him, it‘s neither hypocritical nor ironic for him to claim that a black man just can’t make it without a white man paying for him. He sounds awfully close to some of the racist comments that I have heard over the years and the fact that it is coming from the most powerful man of ANY color in the world just makes for good comedy. And, as for those prisoners in Reyker’s, talk about a full ride scholarship based on deserving nothing at all, unlike her claim that they have a “right” to the American dream even though they are free. What mindless drivel, yet entertaining as she tries to explain why a bunch of cons are more admirable than the founding fathers. The hilarity never stops with these people and nothing they say seems to faze them that they are not taken seriously because they’re completely out

Your theory MSNBC will just go away if you are silent is wrong. They don‘t need money to function when they are owned by a corporation who benefits by their existence and which can hawk it’s wares and improve it’s image among the boycott-crazy liberals.

I‘d say MSNBC is GE’s way of avoiding being boycotted for exporting all those union jobs to China.

That said, she actually brings up some decent points. It’s not okay for us to be blindly patriotic, and we have to remember the founders said Republics were a BAD government form and would ONLY work in America, which was a frontier nation. This is why we’re being quite idiotic trying to spread it to the Middle East where it only ends up electing dictators.

And now that America is no longer a pioneering frontier, there is no longer that independent spirit the founders thought would keep us from being dependent on handouts. Remember Octavius ended the Roman Republic by figuring out he could hand food to the plebeians to get their loyalty. Today a third of Americans are on food stamps and another third on other forms of welfare (SS,etc.).

And the Supreme Court ruled itself powerless last week, saying that it’s “not their job” to protect us from the political consequences of what the 51% decide, even though that IS THEIR JOB (to protect the minority from the majority! du’h!). Which means we are a full-fledged democratic dictatorship.

The founders seceded from a democratic parliament for a LOT less reasons.

I agree. I am so sick of people living in freedom and relative safety while they make themselves wealthy and gain fame, only to use it to demonize the land and the people who made it possible for them to rise above poverty and hard work. Until recently we had the best health care in the world, which they labored long and hard to destroy for the rest of us as we all know the rich will easily get whatever care they desire. All while we lose ours and watch our elderly loved ones be sentenced to perish in a system which shows no value in those with the greatest experience and wisdom, a thing these liberals despise. These liberals are soulless and without the least redeeming quality, the most vile filth ever to walk the earth. They cherish their freedom with the same breath they use to hate ours. Hard to decipher which they hate most, our liberty or the God who made this nation possible. In the end I would have to surmise they hate our God more than our liberty only because they know He shines the light of truth which exposes the evil wickedness, the infinite depths of darkness which is residing in the hearts they posses which once long ago were human. Yes I know we Christians are supposed to have sympathy knowing what their end will be but I for one am not now nor will I ever be sorry for them. Better my Creator is upset with me for looking forward to the Hell He has waiting for them than to face His wrath for being like one of those vile liberals.

@Dr.Vel, I really think you need to go back and reread what you wrote. I’m a Liberal, I have been all my life. To me, being a Liberal means expanding rights and access to those who are lacking, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. I value the right of people to express their opinions even when they disagree with mine. I do these things out of a great faith in God and the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. I DO NOT think that people who disagree with me are “vile filth” but I do admit to fearing what these people will do to people like me out of their mindless hatred and demonization of those they disagree with. I feel pity for people like you, so blinded by your own anger and hatred that you don‘t even see what you’re doing. @DESERTROSE1960

It is true that “Jesus told us to love each other as he had loves us. He ate with prostitutes and tax collectors. He talked to the woman at the well. He asked us to treat each other as we wished to be treated.” But notice that those that Jesus associates with are those that want to listen to Him. Not with those who chose to ignore and revile Him. The ones that welcome and listen to Jesus want deliverance from sin. They want a way out of the cycle of sin and death. They do not want to practice sin anymore. Jesus bore their death so that they can have His Life.

At present, the Democrats are the largest liberal organization in the USA that are anti-Christ. Along with the ACLU they have chosen to fight against the Word of God, the Bible. Even that portion of Americas history that was influenced by those who chose to hear and believe, and by faith make decisions based on the Holy Spirit inspired and revealed Word of God. Those who desire to be loved by the world become hostile towards God. As Jesus has said, if the world hates Him they will also hate those who are His, for the disciple is not greater than the Master.

There is something insidious at play when those in government fight against the freedom and strength that is found by faith in Christ Jesus while wanting more people to be dependent on them, not God. When people chose darkness over Light they seem to think there is safety in numbers as they destroy others along with themselves.

I would think that if you believed everything prior to this statement, you would have said I believe in the Power of God and his children to make things better for the people.

Jesus showed how as individuals, through the power of the Holy Spirit, are to love each other and serve each other. We are not to surrender that to a government.

The founders understood this principle, thus the reason our government is to have specific and limited power. The size and scope and overreach of the fed gov’t is the reason things are such a mess.

“I believe in the power of the Government to make things better for the people.”

In other words, you want someone else to take care of you… In other words, you do not want to practice individual responsibility, rather have another entity practice it for you… The most basic teaching of Christ was that each individual is responsible for themselves and their actions… You, just like so many others, are a hypocrite and do not fully understand what you profess to believe… Save your pity for others because it is you that is in need of pity from others… Fix yourself first, before trying to fix others…

@ @ desertrose1960. I think you need a reality check! None of us are Jesus. We are human and we get pissed. Good advice for those in a position to heed it, but right now “the gooks are in the wire”; and, to us traditional folk, our way of life is under major assault by government-bred jackasses! We are bloody sick of being expected to “turn the other cheek” while the things we hold dear are cr@pped on. Sure we can take our values and clean the cr@p off and move on, but at some point it becomes intolerable …unless of course you are Jesus and willing to give up your life so nature can take its course. That we are not! Not today anyway.

It is not morally relevant whether we have committed fewer sins then other countries. That does not absolve us of anything. We have committed sins and we continue to commit horrific sins. We ought to take responsibility for them. period. No need to invoke the USSR or anybody else, let us take responsibility for ourselves without whining that some other guy was worse.

Everytime the prez opens his mouth he blames someone else for something, and because he is the leader aren’t we supposed to yearn to be like him? Give me an fing break, if you want to apologize for every damn thing that has ever gone wrong in any country in the world go ahead and waste your breath, but I can guarantee that the good that this country has done for every country in this world far outweighs the bad.

Wrong Desert rose, you are speaking anarchy (entropic destruction). If you are truly a liberal, and agree with obama, you are hiding behind Christ to push collectivism and subjugation – not independence. Christ wanted the individual to choose, not the government. He wanted compassion to well up and pour out of a persons heart, not the IRS to force ‘economic fairness’ and ‘governmental compassion’ to demand your compliance. We were BORN equal. After that, it’s up to you to rise or fall- THAT is freedom, and the ability for ones compassion to come forth only as it can, through their free will.

Also, if you really are an active Catholic (I am), you would know that the Pope has written extensively stating that when a government creates and enforces the meter of what is compassionate, it is demonic. When the individual does it, it is Christ-like.

Actually, Desertrose, your not a ‘liberal’ as that term means in Latin or its original definition. Your a ‘new’ Liberal—-a Democrat/Socialist who has ‘coopted’ the use of the term to SOUND like your for freedom, individuality.

But your idea of Liberal only extends to what you, and the tyranny of your majority says, which is, ultimately: Do what we tell you, or die.

You only THINK your allowing freedom( as if freedom can be allowed, as opposed to existing as THE only essential human right). In reality, your ‘freedom’ is the freedom to expropriate the labor and capital of others.

Yet another example of your ‘sheepherder’ mentality, is discussing how many folks listen to this balderdash, as if the number of folks doesnt reveal its ‘hive’ appeal to ‘free stuff, as opposed to its reason.

      Dumb is forever, apparently.

Try following reason, instead of the herd, for once. Its rather invigorating. ‘

This woman also thinks she is better than all of us because of her particular views. It is truly a shame that she was born in this country and feels the way she does. It was actually painful to listen to her. You know how some people say ‘You should try to listen to others’ point of view and not just your own.’ Well, I tried that last year. I did some ‘research’ which included paying a higher rate to Dish Network just so that it would include MSNBC because I wanted to hear for myself what kinds of things they were doing and saying. After two months of this, I began to develop ulcers and acquired a habit of screaming at the T.V. I decided not to waste any more money on it and switched back to my previous ‘Dish Network Package Deal’ which did NOT include these hideous freaks!

You might also want to check her ratings before you go crowing about them being in the basement. MSNBC pulls in about 300,000 viewers during the day on weekends. Check it out for yourself at http://www.tvbythenumbers.com. And before you go and do that, you might want to check out Glenn Beck’s ratings at Quantcast.com. According to this site, The Blaze attracts about 400,000 viewers a day, but his ratings are down. GBTV.com only gets about 60,000 viewers a day.

@desertrose, assuming I believe your numbers (I haven’t verified them), those 60,000 GBTV viewers actually PAY for that access to that one specific channel. MSLSD is free with your cable subscription. Also, based on how some of these “ratings” outlets operate, some “viewers” are merely people who just happened to stop on that channel accidentally.
