Incredible Crash Footage: Cars Fly Violently Down an Icy Pittsburgh Hill

We’ve shown a couple winter crash videos already this season, but none as violent as this one. Watch as multiple cars whip down an icy hill in Pittsburgh yesterday. One Suburban actually twirls and spins multiple times before crashing into a parked car, while another flies down the hill and ends up jumping the curb and landing in someone’s yard.
The footage may be the most incredible winter crash footage you’ll ever see:

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 11:02amyou‘d think if it’s too slippery to walk, you shouldn’t be driving. Why are they even driving?

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 11:19amNot everyone realized how bad it was. It is entirely possible to get into your car on a well-salted street and start driving and not realize until you are skidding down one of these nice slopes we have here.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 12:33pmRabiaDiluvio is right. I live near Pittsburgh and it was a deceptively dangerous bit of ice we were dealing with. Even if main roads were okay, a lot of side streets were treacherous.

And, that’s IF everyone else is DOING THE SAME!
People who Eat, Drink, Talk or Text on the Phone, take eyes off the road for EXTENDED periods of time, READ or REACH off or below center of the Steering Wheel, Speed or Impeed the flow, take Risky Chances or ANYTHING that pre-occupies attention or focus on the surroundings ARE THE ONE’S WHO CAUSE ACCIDENTS.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 11:33amJust think about it for a moment.. That hill didn’t appear yesterday because of unforeseen tectonic activity. It has to be a known icing hazard and for the amount of money the streets people get nowadays it should be monitored and attended to better than it was.
Report Post »Xcori8r
Posted on January 19, 2011 at 11:51amYou know, I thought about it a little more.. Pittsburgh has an awful lot of horizontally challenged topography and it’s probably impossible to protect all of the people all of the time.
I should not have injected politics into the discussion. It was not the governments fault.
It was the governments fault that I should have even thought for a moment that it was the governments fault.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 10:23amSo Pittsburgh, how’s that government working out for you? Doing their job of keeping streets open and safe to travel on? Or are they spending your heard earned tax dollars paying fat pigs to stay home and watch TV, paying corrupt union pensions and benefits, building things no one really needs?
Downsize Government Everywhere! Be Free!
Report Post »RabiaDiluvio
Posted on January 19, 2011 at 11:05amThis was not government–we are used to snow and ice here and we have very very hilly terrain (those who have never been to Pittsburgh are sometimes shocked at the hills). We unfortunately had a very severe ice storm yesterday morning in the wee hours and it left a sheet of glare ice on all the streets. The road crews are great, but they can’t be on every side street at the same time.
So, the government didn’t make the freezing rain and they actually do a good job of allocating resources for ice/snow removal. It is a rare thing for me to praise govt. for doing something right, but there you go.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 12:07pmRabiadiluvio – I admire you trying to inject some rationality into this thread, as have others, but even us conservatives have our share of loons that turn every situation into a way to blame/accuse those they don’t agree with politically – so when we get up in arms about people saying mean things about conservatives, be careful because apparently for a lot of us it’s like the pot calling the kettle black.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 10:18amIce + steep hill + gravity = big smiles on the faces of body shop owners. It’s hard for me to blame the drivers because it appears that once they crested the hill and realized they were on ice, it was just too late. Also, the guy videotaping could probably have done little to stop the carnage (pun really intended). Did you see the pedestrians trying to walk (skate) on that stuff? It would take half a day to get to the top of that hill.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 10:16amDid these people ” HIT THE GAS? HAHAHAHAHA
Seriously…..what IDIOT would TRY to drive UP OR DOWN A HILL OF ICE?
And, NOTICE…how a car or two just slide down and when hitting a parked vehicle, came to a rest – while ANOTHER vehicle went into DONUTS AND SPINS AND CRASHED INTO PARKED CARS, KNOCKING THEM INTO OTHER CARS.
I laugh BECAUSE OF THE IGNORANCE IT TAKES TO DO THINGS LIKE THIS.
And, I wouldn‘t be surprised if they didn’t have wife and kids loaded in these cars –
TO THOSE WHO DON’T ALREADY KNOW -
YOU’RE GONNA HAVE A HELLOFA TIME DRIVING IN SNOW…SO GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!
ON ICE – YOU HAVE NO CONTROL!
UP HILL ON ICE – A WASTE OF TIME.
DOWN HILL ON ICE – HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTT…..YOU’RE IN FREE FALL!
BEST SOLUTION:
STAY AT HOME – AND TRY NOT TO SET YOURSELF ON FIRE TO KEEP WARM.
Who would have THOUGHT that you needed to TELL PEOPLE NOT TO ATTEMPT DRIVING ON ICE?

Not sure where you live, but as one who has lived in the mountains of Utah, you often times do not know that a road is icy till it’s too late. Posted on January 19, 2011 at 2:48pmObummer wants the government to handle everything. Remember? Now you complain that people didn’t take care of themselves. Your a lib nutcase. The police are here to take a report after things stabilize. If an officer arrived to prevent anymore damage and was hurt in the process, the department would have fought in court to limit the medical costs and the officer would be left to fend for himself. It happened at ground zero and the government drug their feet until many already died from the medical problems incurred while trying to save lives. If you don’t believe this, just go to a court hearing and watch the tap dancing by the lawyers to avoid responsibility. If you act to help another person, your one your own. Wait till obummercare hits you in the face. Bet you vote for a conservative next time.

Posted on January 20, 2011 at 6:12pmOh PLEASE!!! We put out barricades and block low water crossings with police cars, and people drive AROUND all of it and drive off into the water. Then they are shocked that their car has drowned out and they can’t drive out. Then they want others to wade out in the fast running water to save their butts. You can’t save some people from themselves. Did you see how fast some of them were driving!!! How about a little accountability here!

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 10:01amI know how those guys feel. I was driving on a country road in Oklahoma one day that had a light dusting of snow on it. Didn’t realise that there was ice underneath until I realised that I was no longer in control of the vehicle. Took my foot off the gas and made the smallest movements on the wheel possible. It end ok but I think I held my breath for about a minute before I told myself to breathe. (60 mph). VERY scary.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 10:18amLook closer at the perspective, he’s already a *long* distance away. There are those on the scene having trouble standing such as the guy with the orange cone so if he could down his hill and to the top of the other hill there are plenty already on the scene who are aware of the situation. And listen to the sound track, while he‘s filming he’s calling for ambulance and emergency crew. I find no fault in his actions, or inaction.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 11:40amTo those of you who are saying the person videoing this did nothing wrong: You are part of the problem that has caused America to slide into the ditch. This little episode of someone taking a video to put on Youtube, instead of getting off of his butt and doing something to help, is indicative of a lazy, self-serving, self-absorbed society. Oh, and RabiaDiluvio, calling 911 should be the very least someone does when he witnesses something like this.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 12:01pmGood point but what had me even more concerned was the people getting out with the little kids should have been hurrying to get them away from danger in case another car came along and took them out. If they had been my kids I would have been moving like someone was shooting at them.
Report Post »RabiaDiluvio
Posted on January 19, 2011 at 12:57pmLTB you are a fool if you think that, bro. If the street is that icy, the police and emergency personnel would be the FIRST to tell you not to try to get out there and climb that hill to warn the cars away. If you live at the corner and can simply stand out there with raised hand and ask people to stop, that’s one thing, but when you have a sheet of glare ice on the road like we did yesterday morning, you don‘t just crawl uphill while cars are skating toward you and pray you don’t get hit or break something along the way.
Report Post »BetsyRoss1513
Posted on January 19, 2011 at 2:24pmI’m not sure he was in a position to do so – how do you walk UP an icy hill? Not me. The guy who gets out of his car and gets into the middle of the road? STupid. That’s asking for hurt.

Obama’s grandmother said she was in the delivery room of the hospital in Kenya when Jr. was born. The Ambassador to Kenya said that it was common knowledge that obama was born in Kenya. Obama, Sr., was a British subject, thereby making obama a British subject.
Google “Constittion of Kenya + Citizenship” and read when Obama Jr. became a citizen of the Republic of Kenya. Geez–what does it take to convince people we have a usurper at the Resolute Desk?!

Does this now mean someone on the left will be calling for a ban on all right-wing cars (not drivers) to be banned as lethal weapons? Where will the outrage for banning the ‘dangerous cars’ come from among those dingbats of the progressives and the liberals?
Or they just might claim Joe Biden was let out of the White House to play in the snow for a time with his toys.
Note: any and all sarcasm in the post are directed solely at the progressives and the administration who remain as clueless as ever.
